Walking with God Through Grief: Devotions and Affirmations for Grieving Hearts

Rate this book
Loss is hard. The death of someone we love can be painful, traumatic, and even devastating.

Loss hits us on every level. It impacts our emotions, our minds, our bodies, our souls, our relationships, and our future.

Grief wells up within us. It can be intense, relentless, and overwhelming. Like ocean waves, grief just keeps coming.

Thankfully, we are not alone. God is with us in our grief, in our pain.

In the Bible, the word walk pops up again and again:

For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7, ESV)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called. (Ephesians 4:1, ESV)

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2, ESV)

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise…(Ephesians 5:15, ESV).

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him…(Colossians 2:6, ESV).

In these passages, the word walk refers to the ongoing, daily, moment-by-moment process of living life. Daily life is a walk—a walk with God.

How do we walk with God while grieving?

That’s what this book is all about.

Walking with God Through Grief contains 90 devotionals. Each chapter is grounded in the Bible and designed to connect with your heart. These devotionals are brief - about 2-3 pages long.

Walking with God Through Grief was written for anyone grieving from all the loss and change in their lives following the death of someone special. The goal of the book is to help grieving hearts cry out to God and walk with Him amid the pain and upheaval occurring in their lives.

Multiple award-winning author Gary Roe is a trusted voice in pastoral counseling and grief recovery that has been bringing help, hope, and healing to wounded hearts for four decades. A former missionary, pastor, and hospice chaplain, Gary has walked with tens of thousands of souls through painful valleys of suffering and loss. The author of more than 20 books, Gary is a sought-after speaker known for his Biblical insights, engaging style, and sense of humor.

Here's what Gary has to say:

"I am follower of Jesus Christ. I come from a background of heavy loss and sexual abuse. I came to Jesus when I was 11 years old. Though I didn’t know it, everything changed in that moment.

As losses and wounds continued to pile up, God faithfully brought me through them one by one. He comforted, encouraged, and healed me, even though many times I was in so much pain I could not even sense His presence. At least four times in my life I thought, 'That’s it. I’m not going to make it through this.' Obviously, I was wrong. God is faithful indeed."

Are you grieving? Are you wounded from the losses of life?

Walking with God Through Grief was written for you.

Hi. My name is Gary.

My story began with a childhood of sexual abuse and numerous other losses. When my life began to unravel as a teen, another family took me in and changed the trajectory of my life. My healing journey began.

Eager to help others heal and grow, my heart turned outward. Over the next three decades, I served as a campus minister, a church-planting missionary in Japan, an entrepreneur in Hawaii, and a pastor. I'm currently work as a writer, speaker, and hospice chaplain.

After walking through deep valleys with thousands of people, I can say the following with confidence:

• We've all been wounded
• Healing isn't for sissies
• We’re all designed for impact
• The world needs us
• We must heal

I'm here to help. I'm no guru or master of anything. I'm a fellow struggler. I still bear the scars of my wounds. I grieve, get anxious, worry, and battle fear regularly. But I'm healing, and I'm growing.

Stop by my website. Drop me an email. I’d love to hear from you.

Since my wife passed away a little over two years ago, I have read books by a variety of grief authors but they can leave a grieving person feeling misunderstood and alone. That is why Gary Roe's Walking with God Through Grief impacted me so deeply.
The greatest strength of this book is that it gives grieving people permission to grieve while reminding them that God is present in that grief. That may sound like a small distinction, but for many of us it is enormous.
Too often, Christian approaches to grief can unintentionally suggest that faith should lessen our sorrow, accelerate our healing or end it immediately. If we are struggling months or years later, we may begin to wonder if something is wrong with us or with our faith. Gary Roe takes a different approach. He acknowledges that grief is painful, complicated, and often unpredictable. More importantly, he never treats grief as a problem to be solved or a weakness to be overcome.
Throughout the book, Roe recognizes the wide range of emotions that accompany loss: pain, longing, loneliness, anger, guilt, confusion, fear, physical, and many others. He validates these experiences without judgment. Readers are reminded that these feelings are not evidence of spiritual failure; they are evidence of love and loss.
He also addresses a truth that many grieving people eventually discover for themselves: grief cannot be avoided. We may try to outrun it, suppress it, distract ourselves from it, or ignore it, but grief eventually demands our attention. There is no shortcut around it.
What I appreciated most is that Roe does not present God as a means of escaping grief. Instead, he presents God as a companion within grief. Through Scripture, he reminds readers that God understands sorrow, welcomes honesty, and is not threatened by our questions, doubts, anger, or tears.
The message is not, “Give your grief to God so you no longer have to feel it.” The message is, “Bring your grief to God because He is willing to walk through it with you.”
For me, that distinction is the heart of this book.
Roe offers hope, but not the kind of hope that denies pain. Rather, he offers the hope that we do not walk this difficult road alone. God does not necessarily remove our grief, but He remains present within it. He listens, comforts, strengthens, and faithfully accompanies us as we learn to carry our loss.
For those seeking a Christian resource that neither minimizes grief nor abandons hope, Walking with God Through Grief is a compassionate and thoughtful guide. It gives grieving people permission to be honest about their pain while gently reminding them that God is already present in the midst of it.

WALKING WITH GOD THROUGH GRIEF: DEVOTIONS AND AFFIRMATIONS FOR GRIEVING HEARTS by Gary Roe, is unlike other grief books.
My son passed away suddenly 16 months ago. I was experiencing different emotions all at once, shock, disbelief, anger at God and more.
Gary’s book title and cover photo caught my attention.
Inside the book, there are 90 daily devotions about 2-3 pages long. Each begins with an emotion you might be feeling e.g. My Heart is Broken, followed by a few short sentences describing why you feel that way; that it’s normal, that you’re not going crazy. Gary adds a words from Scripture.
As I’m reading the words, I could sense Gary’s presence, sitting beside me on a bench by the sea, talking to me like a supportive friend who says “Everything’s going to be okay, I got your back”.
This would be followed by a short prayer to and ending with a Grief affirmation to say aloud and repeat to myself so I wouldn’t forget.
I highly recommend you read this book if you have lost (as I have), someone who meant the world to you, whom you loved with all your heart and who was very special in your life. Gary made my faith in God come back. I no longer feel alone in my grief journey. Instead, I am reassured that God’s presence will never waiver. He will always walk beside you no matter what. You just need to put your trust in His love. He knows everything about you and will never, ever abandon you.

I lost my beloved husband, Tom, on February 27, 2023, and my world fell apart. The pain and emptiness were overwhelming, and I struggled to understand why God would take such a wonderful man from me. Through Gary Roe’s book, Walking With God Through Grief, I have slowly begun to shift from anger and suffering to a deeper faith in God, greater acceptance, and a better understanding that God’s plans are often beyond what we can comprehend. While I still miss Tom every day, this book has helped me see that I can grieve while also trusting God’s love and purpose. The grief affirmations at the end of each chapter have been especially meaningful. They have strengthened my faith, helped me accept the loss of my husband, and reminded me that God is walking beside me through every step of my grief journey. Although my heart will always carry the loss of Tom, I now have hope that God will continue to give me the strength, peace, and grace to move forward one day at a time. Devoted wife, Nance Samulenas

Gary Roe’s Walking with God through Grief is a tender, Christ‑centered companion for anyone carrying the weight of loss. This book feels like a gentle exhale — the kind you didn’t realize you needed — as Roe speaks directly to the hurting heart with honesty, compassion, and deep faith.

He doesn’t offer quick fixes or platitudes. Instead, he points readers to Jesus as the One who walks every step of the grief journey with us. Roe acknowledges the ache, the confusion, and the moments when hope feels far away, yet he continually reminds us that Christ meets us in the valley, holds us in our sorrow, and leads us toward healing.

Short, comforting, and full of truth, Walking with God through Grief is a beautiful reminder that grief is not a place we walk alone — Jesus is already there, guiding, comforting, and restoring.

I have recently completed reading "Walking With God Through Grief", and I am impressed with the thoughtfulness and care author, Gary Roe, used as he created this 90 day devotional about walking through the many kinds of grief people experience today.

From several reminders of my own walking through life's griefs, as I read this book, it's become evident that Gary has also walked through grief, which brings authenticity and encouragement to the book's message.

I've shared a few insights from this books with others, which has brought these people comfort and hope, so I encourage you to get this book. I am confident that you will be helped and strengthened as you read "Walking With God Through Grief".

My husband of almost 47 years died unexpectedly due to a fast-moving cancer during the lock down time of Covid. Because there were no grief support groups available in my rural area, I diligently searched internet sources for help in addressing the grief nightmare I was in. I discovered the works of Gary Roe and found the tools necessary to survive those dark days. Although the intense pain is gone, I continue the grief journey with all of the twists and turns. Walking with God Through Grief, Devotions and Affirmations for Grieving Hearts is yet another tool to help me along the way and I recommend it to anyone walking this same path.

As a grief counselor, I have the privilege of walking alongside people in some of their darkest times. When someone has lost a loved one or close friend, they need to know that they are not alone in their grief. But I can’t be with them every day, in the lonely nights, or when they feel like their lives will never be the same. Today I purchased a new 90- day devotional book that I really love because the daily messages offer comfort, peace and reassurance to a grieving person.
If you have lost someone or know anyone dealing with grief, I highly recommend Walking with God Through Grief by Gary Roe, Author, Pastor, Grief Specialist.

Finally a comprehensive and relatable book on grief, I feel seen, heard, and have found a lot of comfort in this book. Most books focus on one type of loss but this book identifies and talks through how grief affects EVERY aspect of our lives. It’s easy to read, and is encouraging; providing insight, ways to cope, and inspirational scriptures. I’ve read many books over the last few years as I’ve battled with my own grief journey and this has been the most relatable and encouraging of them all.

What a comfort to to hear from someone who has walked through grief and able to bring comfort to aching hearts! I have lost my 9 yr old son to cancer in 1980, 2 sisters to drug related deaths, both parents several years ago and most recently my husband, the love of my life.
Gary's words bring comfort and encouragement that God has brought to him- to share with others in tbier grief. His books are a valuable resource in my ministry of GEIEFSHARE.

In my journey, I have learned that grief brain is a real thing. Often, I don't have the same capacity to deal with things like I did before my husband's death. This book, "Walking with God thru Grief" by Gary Roe, is bite-sized, manageable chunks of information that speaks directly to the grieving heart. Meant to be read one chapter or meditation/affirmation at a time, it is just the right amount of text. I know this will be a valuable tool for all of our grief brains.

Ours is a fast paced world. We are expected to keep moving forward, even through the hardest of times. Gary Roe reminds us that it really is ok to slow down and work through our grief. His use of scripture, prayer and affirmations for the many different avenues of grief our hearts and lives may travel down, make this book an absolute must to either read or share with someone who is going through the grieving process. Scripture paired with affirmations by the author make these daily readings deeply significant, calming, and validating for me. We can't control all that happens to us on our journey in this life, but we can control how we live, learn, and grow through it.
