A character driven fantasy romance that has touched me immensely!
Political intrigues, a slow burning romance and a storyline where everything falls into place in a perfect way!

This was a nice light fantasy with an interesting magic system in which the more you use it, the more it costs you. There is plenty of political intrigue and is just an all round interesting story to read. This book is easy to pick up even if fantasy isn’t your usual genre so I definitely recommend you give this one a go.

The detailed descriptions made it easy to picture the world, and the battle scenes and magic sequences were especially well written and immersive. The romance and spice were enjoyable, though lighter than I typically prefer as a dark romance reader. I think this book will especially appeal to readers who enjoy coming-of-age fantasy, as the story explores themes of betrayal, love, loyalty, and difficult choices that many young adults can relate to as they navigate their own lives.
My biggest struggle was the pacing and world-building. Much of the magic system, Astrid’s past, and the history of the mages were delivered in one large information dump instead of being woven naturally throughout the story. Spreading those details out would have made the world feel more immersive while allowing for stronger foreshadowing and better-developed twists. There was also a noticeable lack of focus on romance and relationships, with more descriptive emphasis placed on world-building and politics instead.
The middle of the book lost momentum, with several scenes feeling repetitive rather than advancing the plot. The frequent shifts between timelines and emotional moments also made the story feel disjointed, and Astrid’s characterization sometimes felt inconsistent. Her transition from a meek and unbalanced maid to a powerful guardian also felt somewhat uncharacteristic and leaned into a more “pick me” portrayal rather than a fully developed hero arc.
A few plot points also broke the story’s logic for me. Astrid revealing the truth about the lichen to Taliana felt out of character, and the consequences surrounding her imprisonment and sudden freedom in the castle weren’t fully explained. By the second half, these inconsistencies made it difficult for me to stay invested, despite the story’s strong premise and vivid setting.

Are you looking for a fantasy romance read where the stakes are high, the magic is 'rampant,' and the forbidden romance actually respects marriage vows? Then look no further than Stormbound released 10th July, 2026.
Stormbound by Kiera C. Vale is told through the immersive POV of the female main character, Astrid Everath, a servant. The story follows her journey as a maid struggling to control a hidden magic she was born with, while enduring a court filled with politics and intrigue, and a betrayal she discovered by accident. The forced proximity sparks a dangerous attraction between Astrid and the king, Sigfried, who happens to be the husband of the Queen she grew up serving. This is a slow burn, I tell you, but when the spice comes up, it is just the right amount to not overpower the plot of the story.
I enjoyed the writing of the author. It was clear and compelling, pulling you right into the high-stakes world. The main characters were able to hold out until the very end of the story to the vows of marriage, which was commendable. I also particularly enjoyed the side characters' development, but I missed them by the end of the book, as the focus was mainly on the main characters, which was expected. Stormbound has a satisfying finale that beautifully ties up loose ends. But it's not as close-ended if the author wants to continue the story in the future.
This book is a good fit for romantasy readers who enjoy slow-burn stories with magic thrown in.

From the very first chapter, this story throws you straight into betrayal, secrets, and an arranged marriage with some political intrigue. A close friend turns traitor, our FMC is clearly hiding something, and you immediately know there are layers waiting to be uncovered.
At the center of it all is a maid whose lifelong bond with her princess begins to crack.
As the magic slowly unfolds throughout the story, hidden abilities tend to grow like a storm and become more important with every chapter. There's also the MMC, a king from a once enemy kingdom whom everyone believes is a monster. The more time you spend with him, the more you begin to question everything you’ve been told.
There is definitely a slow build for the romance.
Nothing is ever quite what it seems. Misconceptions, shifting alliances, tested loyalties, and a battle for power keep the story moving, leading to a plot twist near the end that I didn’t see coming.
Why I gave it a 3⭐️- Iwould have liked to see this book unfold slower and see her learn and grow into her magic a little more. I saw a lot of promising things but do not feel the follow through was committed.
The second half of the book moves too fast and you get confused a lot.
There is also a part at the beginning that leaves the reader completely confused as to how the FMC can just go back to being who she was before and living her life after something is done to her and it just doesn't really make sense how things are just swept to the side.

I was given a chance to read an advanced copy of Stormbound by Kiera C. Vale, for free as an ARC reader, in exchange for my review on the book.

The premise of the book has some great qualities! I can see where Kiera C. Vale wanted to go with plot….there were just some interesting holes that lead me to rate the book as such. The storyline started off strong with our lead, Astrid, a maid, for Princess Taliana, for the past 10 years. Who would need to move with the princess to another kingdom, since the princess is betrothed to King Sigfried for an alliance of kingdoms.
Now this is when it becomes kind of weird. The timeline is completely thrown off, and I had to go back and reread just to understand. They move to this new kingdom, and Astrid’s birthday was just a couple days after the wedding, but then it seemed like it jumped like months ahead, only to go back to Astrid’s birthday. I honestly couldn’t tell if it was a day, a week, or a month, since the wedding.
The other area in the book that caused me to give it the 3 1/2 stars was there was a scene where King Seigfried and Astrid we’re going to be intimate however Astrid took it upon herself to foreplay, and she acted as the maid and King Sigfried was the master. I’m an advocate for sex scenes, and I’m an advocate for foreplay, but it did not feel normal reading it in this book setting. It felt very forced and very rushed. The two of them had not been completely intimate prior to this scene, so it just didn’t seem appropriate to have that happen in the book.
I really wanted to love this book. I just can’t love it the way it should be loved. 💔

The FMC, Astrid is a servant to the soon to be Queen. She has always wanted to belong to something bigger, finding purpose in serving. Yet shrinking into the shadows to remain unseen. Through a power she desperately tries to hide, she finds herself entangled in conspiracies involving the one person she thought she could trust, the only friend she has known. The wrongness of the terrible secret she never should have heard sets her heart at war.
The MMC Sigfried, is the King - known for being dark, vicious, and ruthless. But not all tales are true. He is loved by his people and treats them as his equals.
The magic system is dangerous and vast. Those who have magic are controlled and trained. The consequences dire if that control is lost.
A must read for anyone who loves - rags to riches, timid FMC who finds her strength and voice, forbidden love, and a plot twist that is phenomenal!

I received this book as my first ever ARC and I couldn’t have been more excited! It was definitely a fast-paced story; I do feel like certain scenes could have been given a little more time/depth before the book moved on. But it was a nice read that was easy to follow.
Overall, certain concepts and motives should have been woven into the story a little more thoroughly. I think that the twist would have had more impact if it was something that you’d seen throughout and just didn’t pick up on; rather than learning about the motive for the first time in the moment.
The characters themselves are simple; again, easy to follow, but could have used more personality. I wish we’d gotten to know them on a deeper level; I don’t want to root for someone just because I’m supposed to, I want to SEE that I SHOULD. Showing not telling.
All in all I’m glad I was given an opportunity to read this, and I do recommend StormBound as a light easy read. It reads like a YA (but is still definitely 18+), and only took me about 6 hours!

The story follows a maid and a king, and while I enjoyed the overall concept, I found myself wanting more from the relationship itself. A lot of attention was given to the world-building and surrounding details, but I never felt fully invested in the romance. I was missing the emotional tension, banter, yearning, and connection that usually make me fall in love with a couple.
The writing was solid, and there were definitely moments that kept me engaged, but I found myself wanting to move through certain sections more quickly to get to the next major development.
Overall, this wasn’t a bad read it just wasn’t the right fit for my personal reading tastes. Readers who enjoy fantasy with a stronger focus on world-building and a lighter romantic arc may enjoy this one more than I did.

This was such a good read. If you enjoy forbidden romance, rags to riches, he falls first, a strong FMC, slow burn, tested loyalties, and betrayal…. Then this is for you! I really enjoyed following Astrid through her journey of self discovery and growth. The secrets she keeps are far deeper than she understands and when they are revealed your jaw will drop! The MMC is said to be dark, vicious, and ruthless. However, he may be a strong king but he is loved by his people and treats them as his equals. This leaves the door open for our FMC to be saved when she gets into trouble that she is wrongly accused of. The magic system is dangerous and vast. Those who have it are to be controlled and trained. If they aren’t or they lose control then they will be killed. The opposing kingdom will stop at nothing to take control and the people involved will shock you! I highly recommend this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kiera is clearly a gifted writer, the world building was really great and the prose and descriptions were absolutely lovely. If you like a descriptive writing style this will please you.
There were times when the story skipped ahead and it was a little awkward because it had been quite a detailed process to get there. Like what happened with the mom? Where is the dad? How did the first marriage get resolved?
Generally though this was a unique telling of a strong MMC coming into her own and becoming a force to be reckoned with

Kingdoms left bleeding by war, fragile alliances and palace intrigue unfolded for me, like a deadly game of chess where every move raised the stakes. The richly layered plot with quiet betrayals, simmering tension and creeping mystery kept me questioning everyone’s motives.
Astrid was a easy FMC to root for clever, resilient, and quietly compelling. Serving as Queen Taliana’s handmaiden while guarding secrets of her own, where one wrong step could cost everything.
Then there’s King Sigfried Ragnell… a man who kept me constantly second guessing. He was intense yet soft, leaving every encounter feeling like another clue in an unsolved mystery. The wordly astmosphere was unique, building suspense with every chapter where the pacing never faltered, until I found myself saying, “Just one more,” long after I should’ve gone to sleep.

This was a fun romantasy read by a new-to-me author. The world building was great, the characters interesting and the plot quite cool. This is like a rags to riches read where a young gal wants to live in a castle, ends up becoming a maid in one, and actually ends up with an amazing friendship with the princess. All sounds great until she hears something not meant to be overheard and everything changes... Told in a single POV, I loved following Astrid through her journey, growth, having to use her forbidden magic and coming into her true strength. Expect to get caught up in the secrets, intrigue, danger, twists and romance when you dive into this entertaining read. It's an easy read and, while I will say that I would have loved a little more character depth and smoother pacing, that won't stop me from checking out the next book in the series. Good fun!

Guys I have never read a story like this.... a young girl dreamt of living in the castle, becomes a maid, and creates an amazing relationship with the Princess. I love the bond they have, the type of sisterhood all girls dream of. Then she overhears something and all goes wrong. I enjoyed how this was an easy read, not tons of world building but enough to explain the characters and the depth of their relationship.
Also, this is wrote from a single POV which was wonderful to hear from the maids perspective the whole time. The story was constant and you get wrapped up into this rags to riches sort of story.

An intriguing fantasy that blends court intrigue, adventure, magic, betrayal, and romance.
I really enjoyed this story. While the romance wasn't as fully developed as I would have liked, it was still well written, and I enjoyed watching the relationship between the main characters evolve.
The world-building was engaging, and the plot caught and held my attention as I followed Astrid's quest to protect herself and save the king. What begins as a story centered on a betrayal between friends turns into a much larger conspiracy with kingdom-wide and then world-threatening consequences.
I would have loved to learn more about the magic system and Astrid's background, as both felt like they had even more potential to explore. That said, the plot was well paced, the storyline was easy to follow, and the twists kept me invested throughout.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read with compelling characters, an engaging mystery, and enough political intrigue to keep me reading.

I received an arc copy of Stormbound. I am very grateful for the opportunity to read it. However, it has joined my DNF pile at the 56% mark. I felt like the book began with a interesting perspective (that of a maid). She had an intriguing power that pulled me in because I wanted to know more. However, the pace and focus of the story seemed to slip in the middle. The princess is set to kill her new husband with little context. The maid becomes infatuated with the King and seemingly mutually with little context. I’m not a fan of infidelity and that seems to be the direction the book is going in. I feel like this book could have used more revisions focused on world building and character development.

This a royal political fantasy romance. For the last ten years, since I came to this kingdom, I've been a handmaid and companion to Princess Taliana, my closest friend. Tomorrow we leave to travel to Peridia, where she can marry their king, Sigfried Ragnell, as part of their peace treaty. With my unsanctioned magic, I overhear a plan to kill the king once Taliana is pregnant, and worse I'll be implicated in his murder. I don't know what to think, what to believe, but that doesn't matter; I've got to get the princess ready to follow her future husband to Peridia.

Overall this book is a quick and fast-paced read. I found the story to be overall pretty straightforward.
If you enjoy one horse and one bed situations, you're in luck because this book as both.
What fell flat for me was a bit of the narrative itself. I found myself needing to go back to make sure I remembered something correctly, and the overall character development was minimal. I feel if this were expanded to include more world building, more character development, and a greater elaboration on the magic systems, this would be a great standalone book.

This is a well thought out story line. I enjoyed reading this book. Right from the start you are put into a situation enveloping you into the book. There is magic, king and queens, a murder plot, assassins, and lots of action (and some spice). There were a few confusing parts for me but explanations just took longer than my patience wanted. There is a part of the story that seemed to have been dropped. A part of the story that was a pivoting moment with the timing of events, the trigger for action to take place and it just kind of drifted off into the air. Spoiler: What happened with the pregnancy?!

Stormbound had a lot of potential but I feel like some parts were too rushed. The main characters didn't really demonstrate a lot of chemistry until he takes her on his horse but there were moments when it seemed like maybe it was supposed to be some connection. The fact that majority of the story takes place after he marries the princess she is the maid for that is plotting to kill him just doesn't seem logical. And for me I just do not like when either main character sleeps with someone else after they have met each other. It feels less meant to be for me.

I am lost for words on how kieracvale was able to put so much action in less than 300 pages. I read this one over two nights. I really got into it last night. Tropes would be like forbidden romance, he falls first and slow burn romance. Also, loyalty is tested and betrayal occurs and you learn who you can trust. I give this book a 4/5 based on the book really engaged me with the story line and I really loved it. I really enjoyed getting to know Astrid as a character and felt like I truly experienced what she did and enjoyed how she grew in confidence as the novel progressed.

I received this as an ARC and the story was so good I finished it in a day! The story hooked me from the very beginning and I loved the expressive and detailed writing style this author has. The world building worked seamlessly hand in hand with the plot without any drag.
For the story itself...self discovery, betrayal, friendship, love... fate? There was quite a bit to unpack and each unfolded with a new twist and turn that kept me turning the page! It almost had some fated mates vibes.

The characters were very complex and compelling and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building was excellent and expertly drawn. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Only took a couple of pages before I was hooked. Loved the plot twists and the characters, I want more! In this short book you get yearning, frustration, growth, spice and multiple plot twists that I didn't see coming. Hope the author continues the characters stories!.

I like the story overall, the concept I found unique and intriguing. My only gripe is the overuse of the "It's not... it's ...." [Just say what it is or arrange the sentence a different way or omit the "It's not...." portion!] I like the world building, the series of events, and it was an easy and addictive style read. It was cute.

There was definitely some great aspects of this book. I enjoyed the slow burn of the main characters and the maid/king trope. The were spicy scenes but would only say it was mildly spicy. I was hoping for more intense action scenes that dealt with the magic side of the storyline. It was a good and easy read.

This book picks up pace super fast, which was a nice change. I also really liked that the premise of the book was different to the usual book with an arranged marriage trope.
While I liked the plot and plot development, for me personally there could have been more world and character development, and I would have loved a further exploration of the magic system.

I had the absolute pleasure of reading this ARC. I loved every bit of this book and read it in under 24 hours. I could not step away from the world that was built in this story nor the characters. I must admit to being a sucker for all things magical but this book did not disappoint! If Fantasy is your thing, do yourself a favor and read this!!

This book is phenomenal!!! A slow burn that turns out to be a happy ending. I liked the bits of action thrown in and the turmoil faced as well. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone!! Kiera has a way of pulling you in with some suspense and the “that shouldn’t happen that way” and brings it full circle to make the perfect story.
