Worried, Candy, the maid of honor, goes looking for him, finally tracking him down to the upstairs archive rooms at the English Point Lighthouse and Museum. There’s only one problem: he’s dead, struck over the head with a bottle of champagne, the same exclusive brand that was ordered for the dinner. Before the wedding plans fall flat, Candy rushes to find the murderer, unearthing a conspiracy that could spill over into the whole town...

Another berry clever story in the Candy Holliday Murder Mysteries!

First, to B. B. Haywood for dedicating TOWN IN A CINNAMON TOAST to the fans and bloggers of cozy mysteries. . .thank you for thinking of us!

I love that each book in this series starts off with the death scene from the victim’s perspective. Next the reader gets to read some of the local newspaper from Cape Wellington, Main, The Cape Crusader. And all this before chapter one!

TOWN IN A CINNAMON TOAST centered around my favorite character, Herr Georg Wolfsburger. Needless to say, this became one of my favorite books in this fantastic series. Every character in this series is wonderfully written and developed. They all make for fun, entertaining reading.

A great plot that carried through more than one mystery, B. B. Haywood captured everything in one book that has made this entire series such a treat to read. This is for sure another fabulous installment of the Candy Holliday Murder Mysteries that will have a special place on my bookshelves.

My one concern. . .this story felt final. With so many great cozy series ending in 2015 and already in 2016, I’m really hoping this series won’t be one of them.  I’m holding on to the hope that there will be a book eight.

Take a look at the back of the book for recipes, a spring planting guide, full character list, and an excerpt from the very first Candy Holliday book, TOWN IN A BLUEBERRY JAM!

Cape Willington, Maine is gearing up for a wedding! Herr Georg Wolfsburger and Maggie Tremont will finally tie the knot in the latest Candy Holliday mystery by B.B. Haywood. Town in a Cinnamon Toast, follows in the tradition of the series. It's charming, it's a little quirky, and it's full of surprises. Readers who haven't tried this series, will be wishing they hadn't waited so long when they get a hold of this one. A great addition to this clever mystery series.

What I liked:

A lot of things come to mind when I think about what I love about this series. The setting, in a small Maine coastal town is perfect for the series. It may put you mind of Cabot Cove, but Candy Holliday is nothing like Jessica Fletcher. The town itself has taken on all the characteristics of a character of it's own. I love coming back to Cape Willington with each new installment because I want to know more about these people and what they have been up to while I've been away. Haywood always seems to know how to draw the reader back in and make them a part of the landscape of the town. A hallmark of a good author.

Candy once again finds herself in the middle of a murder. She may be a blueberry farmer, which I find both comical and believable, but she's a darn good amateur sleuth. She takes a few things a little too far and she is more curious than any cat I've ever known but she often surprises me and that's hard to do when you read tons of cozies every month. As a heroine she rocks. As a person in the real world, I'm not so sure she would get away with her sleuthing ways...lol!

I'm glad we are finally getting to see Herr Georg find love. He is one of my favorites in this series and his wedding to Maggie is a celebration that Cape Willington and readers will never forget. I'm glad Haywood decided to center the mystery around the wedding. When the best man doesn't make it to the ceremony that can cause problems. Candy is on the case and readers will enjoy the clues, red herrings and delectable suspect list. Not to mention Haywood's knack for writing about food. My taste buds were watering with this one and those recipes in the back are going to hit the spot.

What I didn't like:

Not too much to dislike about this one. One thing about most cozies that bugs me is that the main suspect is never really the killer. Readers who read a lot of cozies know that, but wouldn't it be cool if you spent the whole book trying to pin it on somebody else and it really was the main suspect? Maybe it's just me but too much predictability is never a good thing. Haywood's books are not your average cozies and tend to have interesting plots and great mysteries. So honestly, there isn't much I don't like about this one.

Last fall I read my first Candy Holliday Murder Mystery book, TOWN IN A PUMPKIN BASH, and got hooked. When I found out that the husband and wife team writing as B.B. Haywood, were coming out with a new release in the series last month, I was extremely happy…and their newest book, TOWN IN A CINNAMON TOAST, did not disappoint!

Candy Holliday has quit her managing editor position with the local newspaper so that she can work side-by-side with her father, Doc, on their blueberry farm. Her best friend, Maggie Tremont, is getting married to the town’s baker, Herr Georg Wolfsburger. They are holding their wedding at Candy and Doc’s farm and the bridal couple host a pre-wedding planning dinner at a local restaurant. When the best man, Julius Seaburg, doesn’t show Candy goes looking for him. Julius is the town’s unofficial historian and spends a great deal of time at the English Point Lighthouse Museum researching. Candy finds him at the museum face down, dead. A bottle of the champagne Georg had purchased for the wedding is near his body and seems to be the murder weapon.

While waiting for the police to arrive, the museum’s director shows up. Owen Peabody disregards the crime scene and picks up books that have fallen to the floor. A note flutters from one of the books with several names of the town’s founding families written on it. Owen stuffs it into his pocket believing it to be inconsequential, but Candy thinks it could be a clue Julius wrote before he died. When the police begin investigating the Chief of Police makes it clear that he considers Candy a suspect since she had means to snatch the champagne while she was at the restaurant and then she was found alone with the murder victim. Plus he doesn’t like how she’s found victims and solved several murders over the past few years.

Maggie is distressed and considers postponing the wedding after finding the unconscious body of the waiter who was handling their champagne. Candy determines she needs to find the killer so her friend can have the wedding of her dreams. Herr Georg, although somewhat elderly, jumps into the investigation with Candy to keep his bride-to-be from being stressed out. And as he points out, the murderer made it personal when he killed his best man using a bottle of his champagne.

One of the things I love about this series is the historical mystery thread that is woven throughout. Even though this is the seventh book in the series, it is still easily read as a stand-alone. If you have followed Candy’s story, TOWN IN A CINNAMON TOAST has more clarity to the feud between some of the founding families from eons back that continues into modern times and impacts the entire town. The author also does a wonderful job creating close family and friend relationships with the central characters. Of course I have to mention the delicious recipes that B.B. Haywood provide with their book! They have included the Orange Wedding Cake recipe Herr Georg made from an old family recipe for his and Maggie’s reception….although this recipe is scaled down to make a regular sized cake. I made it and it's incredibly yummy!

Besides this installment, I have only read the first book in the series. Perhaps this unfamiliarity with the characters inhibited my enjoyment. I found the characters flat and the plot slow moving and a bit boring. This is just not the series for me.

Look, mostly I've realized that this is just not a genre for me. I can NOT do cozy mystery.
I've tried a couple, nothing blows my hair back and I find myself just trying to get through it. I don't mind the "amateur sleuth" thing, at times its very entertaining, but here, I was frustrated. It is NOT okay to hold information and evidence back from the police. I was never invested in any of these characters nor did I care much about who did it or why. Julius was the best character and he got about 4 pages. I'm not knocking stars for the fact that this isn't my jam. I AM taking a star for some of the writing or times when the characters were just not being smart. I am going to go with 3 and just stay away from this kind of thing in the future.

A few days before Maggie & Herr Georg's wedding, the best man is found dead. Can Candy find the killer before the wedding is spoiled?
Some historical documents, believed to be original deeds to parts of the town, are missing. Could that be why Julius got killed?
This series has an undercurrent through all the books that there is something going on with the founding families of the town. Every book reveals a little bit more information. I hope it gets fully resolved in the end.

Review:

Spring has finally spring in Cape Willington, Maine, and love is in the air. Local baker Georg and our protagonist Candy’s best friend Maggie are finally tying the knot, and the wedding party comes together for a nice dinner before everything gets crazy busy in the days leading up to the wedding. However, Julius, the best man, has failed to show and Candy, the maid of honor, goes in search of him. She finds him at the village’s lighthouse and museum, apparently conked on the head with one of the wedding party’s bottles of champagne. It looks like Julius, the unofficial town historian, must have uncovered something unsavory in his research about the town’s oldest families to lead to such an end. Candy and Georg find themselves on the police’s radar since she found the body and he supplied the bubbly for the dinner. Candy feels she owes it to Julius’s memory and to her friends to get to the bottom of the murder, and she hopes she is interpreting Julius’s clues that he left behind correctly, before the couple says “Ido”.

Town in a Cinnamon Toast is the seventh book in the Candy Holliday Murder Mystery series, and it is sure to please fans of the series.

I have only read one other installment in the series, and I think this hindered my enjoyment. It continues a storyline that is woven through several of the other books. Though Haywood does a decent job of explaining things, I quickly established that I was not interested in the plot focused on land deeds and conspiracy. The story moved along at a crawl, and I found myself easily distracted while reading (this is unusual for me). Instead of enriching the Maine atmosphere, I thought the copious details dry and bland. I anticipated reading all sorts of tidbits about blueberry farming and a picturesque setting, but there is little to do with Candy’s day to day life within the pages. I understand that the focus is the wedding, but still. Approximately two hundred pages in, the action picked up, but barely.

I do not feel like I got to know any of the characters very well. They were flat and the dialogue stilted at times. I like Georg and Doc Holliday the best. Candy is well-meaning and intelligent, but, in my opinion, her abilities are farfetched.

Unfortunately, the Candy Holliday series is just not for me, but I do not hesitate to recommend it to others, especially fans of the series. Isn’t the beauty of a genre full of different authors and settings is one’s ability to find something for everyone?

It's the social event of the season in the Village of Cape Willington. Wedding bells are ringing for a local, Maggie Tremont and baker, Herr Georg Wolfsburger. It's the pre-wedding party and Maggie and Georg's loved ones all gather together to celebrate. But there's someone missing from the party--the best man. Growing concerned, Maggie's maid of Honor, Candy and local farmer at her father, Doc's blueberry farm volunteer to try to find the best man, Julius.

She finds him in the archive rooms at the local Lighthouse and Museum. But what was he researching? Julian is a historian researching the history of the founding families of Cape Willington but all is not good when Candy walks into the room to find him hit over the head with a bottle of champangue, specially orders by the groom for his wedding and he's dead.

Candy is famous for solving murders in Cape Willington and this murder is no different. Candy soon diserns a game of greed and trickery and land deeds become the object of someones desire. Finding a murderer is the most important thing to Candy so her friends could have the wedding they dreamed of and their town can be safe once again.

This story was kind of lacking and very slow paced, The plot for me was not very interesting, what I didn't really find interesting was the town's history even though it was essential to the story, I just found it so-so. I did love discovering the hidden secrets and it was fun to read of Candy's adventures within the town to find the killer.

I think I was hoping for more about life on the farm because I love cozies that gear more toward the theme and the murder. Although there were captivating characters and a picturesque setting that is true to the cozy mystery that I enjoyed. I couldn't really relate to Candy that much and found her to be a little bland and that is a very important thing to me if I were to continue reading a series.

Author B.B. Haywood once again takes us back to Cape Wellington. Wedding Bells are in the air and Candy cannot wait to celebrate with her friends Maggie and Herr Georg. Her Maid of Honor duties are her priority, but we can't have an adventure without some trouble brewing - once again the form of murder. If the wedding is going to go off without a hitch, Candy, with the help of secret messages and the to-be-groom, will rush to solve the mystery before the wedding chimes ring. The setting and characters are great. You can almost smell the baking coming from Black Forest Bakery and the blueberries growing at Blueberry Acres. Cape Wellington may not exist, but Boothbay Harbor sure does, and the mere mention of it brings back wonderful memories of summers past.

Lost land deeds, greed, old rivalries and revenge lead to murder. The town of Cape Willington is preparing for the wedding of two popular residents when the best man is found murdered in the archives of the local museum. Maid of honor, Candy Holliday, works to solve the murder before the wedding, to give everyone some closure. The investigation uncovers a plot to take over ownership of most of the land in the town and surrounding area. This has been a fascinating subplot since the second book in the series and this seventh book pulls all the stories together for a surprise ending. I would recommend that you read the series in order and it is well worth your time. This is an adventure that you shouldn't miss!

Maggie and Herr Georg are getting married. The wedding is to take place at the Holliday blueberry farm. If that's not enough to keep Candy Holliday busy, she must discover who killed the best man before anyone else gets hurt.

A fast paced page turner from the very start. The entire story takes place over just a few days time.

A great series with a long running subplot that not only keeps me reading each book, it's making me go back and re-read the series from book one so I can stay on top of the long running story line.

Nice story-line...wish the story into "Foul Mouth" was expanded on. The difficulty with this book was all the characters' names brandished about, yes they were necessary to the plot, but were people not well known leaving me at times scratching my head saying "who is this ...again?"
NOW-the wedding was Grand! The bakers making there own cakes to each other and their wedding gifts to each other....hmmm.

This is a pretty good series about a town in Maine. The main character has a blueberry farm with her father. In this book, her best friend is getting married, and the best man is murdered a few days before the wedding. Candy searches for the murderer and tries to solve so mysteries that have been plaguing the town over the past few years.

You have to read this series in order.

Also this was a good story, nice environment and lovely characters and the mystery was interesting as always...also if I never guess the culprit. Odd but new that isn't the wedding of the main character whom we read , I would like a bit more of romanticism, though.

Interesting mystery of a best man who is murdered just before he is able to stand with the groom. Can say Holliday is able to discover who killed him and save the wedding? A pretty good story but I suspect I would have more enjoyment with the previous books.

I am sad. Why? Because I know after this book I only have one left in the series. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series. Candy and her dad, Doc, feel like old friends when I open up the book and start reading. I feel comfortable and content while reading.

In book 7, Candy's BFF, Maggie, and old boss, Herr Georg are getting married. For long-time readers of the series, this is a happy occasion. Maggie finally deserves some happiness after her rotten ex-husband. Unfortunately, the best man is murdered before the wedding. As we come to learn he had information on a mystery that has run throughout the entire series. We finally learn all the secrets involved in that mystery by the end of the book.

As always, the story is a clean read with no foul language, no sex and no grisly murder scenes that make your tummy roll. Please read the series from the beginning or you will not understand exactly what is going on with the secondary mystery.

Now, if you will excuse me I am going to go ponder if I should read the last book immediately or wait until I need a farm book for my next cozy mystery book bingo on Goodreads and savor the thought that there is one book left for my enjoyment.

First off, this was part of a series and the first of the series I have read. That shouldn't have had any impact on my enjoyment, or lack thereof, for the book; since each time I have read a random cozy mystery from a series I have had no problem getting into the story.
That was not the case with this, I just couldn't get into it. This from a person who has read a book cover to cover in one sitting, more times than I can count. For me to not have been able to get through a page or in most cases a paragraph without wanting to do something else was not at all normal. I mean really, scrubbing the bathroom grout with a toothbrush held more appeal than this book.
I found myself skimming pages in an effort to get done quickly. But even then I just couldn't care, about the story, about the characters.
When I read a good book I experience a bit of grief over the story ending, this time I experienced relief.

Candy finds an apparent dead body under mysterious circumstances but does not immediately call 911; instead, she surveys the scene and moves the supposed murder weapon, but she does not do CPR or otherwise attempt to revive the victim. After 10 minutes she finally calls 911. But this is totally irresponsible behavior, and there were other situations in the book where she does her investigation first, then calls the authorities later. In previous books she has shown an independent streak and is not afraid to plunge ahead when faced with adversity. She acts differently in this book. I have read the entire series; this one was just not up to par with others like "Pumpkin Bash" and "Wild Moose Chase" and "Sweet Pickle," which were entertaining and well done.

The ending does not resolve the underlying theme of the series (stolen land deeds), and the supposed killer does not make sense. Hopefully these will be addressed in the next book in the series.

Herr Georg and Maggies wedding is coming up but Candie needs to solve the murder of Herr Georgs best man so that the wedding can go through and everyones mind is at peace again.
While unreveling the murder Candiesolves the mysterie behind the old land deeds.
But the question remains - will this be the end for the Sykses attempt to regain control of Cape Wellington?

I really enjoyed reading this mystery. The author repeats the story of the land deeds wothout beeing to repetitive.

B.B. Haywood tells a story well. I imagine this book would lend itself beautifully to an audio book. The story was interesting and not too simplistic like many books of the genre. I'm on the fence about buying more of the series. One thing I enjoyed is that is stuck to being a mystery. I've given up on a few series because they couldn't decide if they were really romance stories or mysteries. (Obviously characters may be in relationships but some cozy mysteries lean to heavily this way.)

Not sure what was so different, but I really didn't like this book compared to the first 6 in the series. I didn't like Candy or her attitude or the way she acted with "suspects". I didn't like the mystery. I didn't like the townspeople or the background wedding. It was slow and I had to force myself to read. Really disappointing. I believe there is only one book left in the series and now I have no idea when I will ever read it, but I suspect it will be awhile.

Very glad that I stumbled upon this book at a local thrift store. Since I like to read books in order, that caused me to get the previous ones from our library system. I've enjoyed every one of them. Candy and her friends are great at solving mysteries. And Cape Willington seems to have plenty of murders. Wish there was more than one book in the series left for me to read! I'm going to miss them!

From the first Candy Holliday read in this series I loved her and the mysteries. Unfortunately this very last read in this series was not good at all. Too hard to follow, the author was wrapping up loose ends from the many characters in this series and it turned out it was just too hard to follow.

Deeds to die for

Will the deeds from the founding families bring more death and heartache to the Cape and ruin Herr George and Maggie's big day? Not with Candy and her new crime solving side kick on the case... Or will they? Another great read and can't wait to start the next one.
