Meanwhile, Sayer is over here fresh out of a relationship, trying to heal in peace. The universe looked at that and said, "Cool. Here's a chaotic woman with caffeine and zero regard for personal space."

When coffee, a rug, and poor life choices send them crashing into each other, I was done for. It was cute, hilarious, and had me giggling the whole time.

If you like your romances with ridiculous banter, lovable chaos,  this one absolutely delivers. I ate it up like it was the last snack in the house.

She’s not the high flying, sorted adult she expected to be by now, and Gait writes that frustration with such sharp, relatable warmth you’ll be nodding along on every page. Then there’s Sayer, freshly single, questioning every choice he ever made, and equally far from having it all figured out. When a clumsy collision in their building brings them together, what unfolds isn’t a fairy tale, it’s something far better.

This isn’t a story about two broken people fixing each other. I finished Almost Functional by Elen Gait with the quiet satisfaction of someone who has just read a good book.

Nova’s opening complaint about life’s missing customer service department landed so cleanly that I laughed out loud .

At thirty she is still waiting for the polished adult package that everyone else appears to have unboxed without effort, a steady career, tidy relationships, an apartment that does not feel permanently in need of a makeover (or demolition!).

Instead she has the familiar New York cocktail of stalled ambition, dating disasters, and rent anxiety.

Sayer arrives in the same building carrying his own version of the same discontent… he’s thirty two, freshly single, and suddenly aware that the life he carefully planned no longer fits.

Their first meeting is pure physical farce, a clumsy collision that somehow becomes the most honest introduction either of them has managed in years.

What I loved most is how little the novel pretends these two are going to fix each other. They remain unfinished, still fumbling through ordinary weeks, still capable of saying the wrong thing or choosing the easier avoidance.

The romance grows not from grand gestures but from the slow accumulation of small, inconvenient kindnesses, shared laundry room complaints, late night admissions that neither of them has it figured out, the quiet relief of being allowed to show up messy.

The writing stays light enough to keep the pages turning yet never flinches from the exhaustion of trying to become a functional adult when the instructions seem to have been lost in the mail.

By the end I did not feel as though I had watched two broken people become whole. But I felt as though I had watched two people decide that “almost” might be enough for now, and that choosing each other in the middle of the mess is its own kind of success.

It is a gentle, funny, unexpectedly comforting book for anyone who has ever looked around at thirty and wondered when the real adults were supposed to arrive.

Well… after putting myself through a couple of seriously dark and heavy reads, I think Almost Functional was EXACTLY the book I needed! 🥹❤️
Nova is thirty and basically waiting for someone to explain when the whole “having your life together” thing is supposed to kick in because, honestly… SAME! 😂
Her career isn’t exactly where she thought it would be, her dating life is a mess and she’s just trying to make it through the week without everything falling apart.
Enter Sayer.
He’s thirty-two, newly single and having his own little existential crisis after realising that the life he thought he wanted… maybe isn’t actually the life he wants at all.
And when these two end up thrown into each other’s lives, what follows is messy, awkward, funny and genuinely lovely. ❤️
What I really enjoyed about this was that neither Nova nor Sayer is presented as perfect. They’re both figuring things out. They both have their own baggage and neither of them needs the other to magically “fix” them.
They just… fit.
Sometimes you don't need someone to come along and make your life perfect. You just need someone who makes the chaos feel a little more manageable. 🥹
I found myself smiling, laughing and rooting for these two, and after all the darkness I’ve been reading lately, it was so nice to have a romance that felt lighter but still had some depth behind it.
And can we talk about the title? Almost Functional is basically the perfect description because honestly… who among us is actually fully functional?! 😂
A sweet, relatable, feel-good romance about finding someone when neither of you has life completely figured out. 💕
Definitely one for anyone who enjoys contemporary romance, imperfect characters, messy lives and finding love when you least expect it.

Two imperfect lovers and a gray rug

This was such a gentle, melodic and entertaining book to read with two complex, damaged protagonists and a plot filled with sweet contemporary romance. There are themes of forced proximity, past relationship grief, family drama, emotional damage and angst but it culminates in a sweet HEA for the two main characters.

Nova came to New York to make something of herself but the dud relationships, shoebox apartment, slew of lack-lustre jobs and the loss of her latest career has her second guessing her parody of life at thirty years old. Then she nearly takes out her cute new neighbour with her gray rug and that one meet-cute brings about a change in her circumstances and opens up her heart.

Sayer is fresh out of an engagement and trying to get his head straight and heal his heart when he is almost floored by a beautiful stranger in his new apartment complex. She definitely left a lasting impression on him because sparks flew and their chemistry ignited and now he has to find a way to make her understand that he is all in with her.

This was a gentle and emotional story about focusing on what our main couple were doing with their lives now that they were in their thirties, respecting each others thoughts and coming up with a plan for their future to live a satisfying and contented life. With the humour, banter and support of their two best friends tying into the story this was a lovely and lighthearted read that left me feeling good.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the hours of respite this reading has gifted me and thank the author for giving me the opportunity to enjoy the arc and provide my voluntary review.

Almost Functional is a lighthearted contemporary romance that combines humor, relatable everyday chaos, and a sweet romantic connection between its central characters.

Nova and Sayer were both enjoyable characters, and I particularly appreciated the natural development of their relationship. Their chemistry comes through well, while the story gives enough attention to their individual personalities and lives outside of the romance to make their connection feel grounded. The dialogue and humor also added plenty of personality to the story and kept the overall tone fun and easygoing.

The pacing worked well for me, I was very interested in seeing how the characters and their relationship would develop. The contemporary setting and everyday situations gave the story an approachable, feel-good quality.

This book falls outside my usual reading preferences, as I tend to gravitate toward darker and considerably spicier romances, so my rating is very much influenced by my personal taste rather than the quality of the writing or storytelling. Readers who enjoy sweet contemporary romance, strong character dynamics, humor, and a romance that focuses more on emotional connection than spice will likely find Almost Functional an enjoyable read.

Elen Gait has a distinctive and engaging writing style, and although this particular romance wasn’t quite my usual cup of tea, I would definitely be interested in seeing what she writes next.

Nova had been out of work for months and was trying her best to not have to admit defeat and move back to New Jersey with her parents. She loved Midtown, New York, but when corporate arrived at their dealership and the manager, Jake, called them all into his office for the meeting, they looked at the man in shock.

The dealership was being closed. Just like that, unemployed, and even though she had spent every day going through applications, so far no luck. And looking at her stained carpet, obviously barely functioning. Looking around her small apartment and seeing her disaster, she rolls up the carpet and heads down the stairwell, since the elevator is not working again, to have it professionally cleaned, as her efforts were just making the stain worse.

She has made it three levels before she totally loses balance and all she hears is an 'umph' as coffee goes flying and the man steadies the carpet that just slammed into his chest. She looks at the man in horror as the coffee stain ruins his dress shirt and then finds out that he just signed the lease to the only other apartment on her floor.

I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This book is a bundle of mishaps and misunderstandings. And the twists. This rom-com goes from highly embarrassing to totally cold shouldered with a twist you didn't see coming.

This is the first book I have read by this author, but I am hooked. The characters are engaging and loved the storyline! Highly recommend!

This book was SO good! I absolutely loved Nova and Sayer and their journey.
Nova is 30 and trying to put her life back together after losing her job, while 32-year-old Sayer is dealing with his own feelings of failure after his engagement ends. They meet in what is almost a disastrous situation, but despite the circumstances, there’s an instant connection between them—and from that moment on, their attraction only continues to grow with every meeting.
I loved the way their relationship develops. Nova wants to take things slowly, and Sayer completely respects that. She’s drawn to his steadiness and calm, while Sayer finds Nova’s authenticity refreshing. She’s unapologetically herself, and he loves that about her. He knows what he wants, but never tries to rush her. Instead, he supports her, gives her the space she needs, and is there for her every step of the way. ❤️
And honestly, this book has EVERYTHING! It made me laugh, kept me worrying about what would happen next, and had me wondering how everything was going to work out. I was completely invested in these two!
Ellen’s writing is so engaging and effortless that the pages just flew by. She kept me entertained from beginning to end, and I didn’t want to put this book down.
Such a wonderful, heartwarming read with characters you can’t help but root for.

Nova loses her job out of nowhere, while Sayer loses the life he thought he had all figured out. When Sayer moves into Nova’s building and they become neighbors, both of their lives slowly start finding their way back on track.

Even though the two of them have quite a lot in common, I found Sayer’s character more interesting than Nova’s. Maybe that’s why I found Sayer’s chapters a little easier to get through.

I really liked how much the book focuses on that whole “what am I doing with my life?” crisis that seems to hit around your 30s, and I thought Nova and Sayer’s experiences portrayed that really well. Their romance was super cute, although it did feel a little rushed at times. I also really enjoyed their friendship with Jake and Elise. They’re both such good friends and always seem to have the best advice.

The story felt a little slow for me at first, but once Nova and Sayer started interacting more, things definitely got more interesting. That said, there were still a few chapters where I found myself losing interest again, and the last four chapters felt particularly long. That’s where I struggled to stay fully engaged.

Overall, this wasn’t a story that completely blew me away, but it has some really nice moments and it’s still an enjoyable read.

Elen Gait writes with a voice that is sharp and tender in equal measure — hilarious one moment, quietly devastating the next. Nova is wonderfully, believably clumsy and human — overthinking, stumbling, surviving — and Sayer accepts every messy, imperfect part of her with a warmth that makes their closed-door romance deeply touching.
These two were 100% made for each other and I will take no corrections on that. The banter is off the charts, the chaos is delightful, and that ending perfectly matches their dynamic — a little neighbourly trauma, a lot of heart.
Real, warm, cosy, and quietly powerful. Being almost functional is still a step forward — and this book reminds you of that beautifully. Highly recommended!.

If you love a good meet-cute, close-proximity and mild obstacles romance, this book is for you. The story follows next-door neighbours Nova and Sayer as they navigate through life in New York. After a couple accidental hallway meetings, they start dating each other, but with both of them having some secrets and they find themselves entangled in a sudden love triangle, things become more complicated.

I liked the romantic bits, such as the meet-cute and the pasta date, the 'love'-triangle element, the forced-proximity trope and the (descriptive) writing style. What I liked less was the second half of the book. About halfway, it felt like a natural ending to me, but it continued with a whirlwind of huge proclamations. It just was way too much in my opinion, which made the story extremely unrealistic and less enjoyable. There was also a case of romance convience, as the whole book only includes about four people, who become couples.

Four stars for the beginning, two stars for the end equals three stars overall.

This was a cute story I love how they first met started to getting more concerned about Sayer safety after every encounter they had lol.

I loved mrs. Chen everyone should have a mrs. Chen in there corner rooting for them.

I enjoy the story dont get me wrong but after awhile it felt like it was going at a glacier place for me and Nova started to annoy me how she was acting towards Sayer like he did some terrible crime and when she tells him to figure out what he wants like WHAT! HE WANTS YOU!!! Hes been saying it the WHOLE time like oh my god i dont wanna say too much more cause i dont wanna give anything away but wtf i dont know she was kinda childish there maybe i missed something i don't know but that part just stuck with me through the whole book. Like the phrase it left a sour taste in my mouth so to speak and after the she just annoyed me in general.

Theres funny banter, the lovey dovey cutesy stuff was there, relatable hardships everyone in life eventually encounters in life. Its cute light hearted story but this story wasn't really for me i know alot of other people who would love it

So between 2 jobs ( which for some reason got super hectic over summer) wedding planning and just life! I managed to still read this a finish it a day before release day! I thought it was out on the first so I was panicking a bit!! But phew!


Now on to the goods!

I read this book in 3 solids reading sessions and I LOVED it! I love the main characters and how their story is told in a real life perspective and reality! From worries, to wants to feeling to growth! I felt like I was reading about someone’s actual story! I really enjoyed seeing these 2 grow and deal with their insecurities front and center! And I could not believe Jake! What were the chances!!! Like I mean it was obvious BUT I still really enjoyed seeing that friendship do what it needed to. Just adds more realistic situation to the story and I was here for it!

You’d think Nova’s day couldn’t get any worse: fired weeks ago, not getting anywhere in her job hunt, spilled coffee all over herself and her living room, and now she almost killed her cute new neighbour with her carpet slipping from her hands… And yet that’s the beginning of a new chapter, because her and Sayer instantly click, and though it takes a while for things to work through, well, work through they do, and in the best possible way.
“Almost Functional” is a sweet, cute romance, pretty clean (just a hint of spice) and enjoyable to read. While it was fun, though, I felt it lacked real emotional depth and it was quite rushed: neither the love story nor the friendships had much space to breathe and therefore the changes in circumstances were so quick at times that I felt some whiplash at how fast things changed. Still, it’s a fun, easy read if you’re looking for something relaxing, as a book to take on a weekend break or a short holiday.

I was barely functional while reading this book. I was so wrapped up in the story for the first chapter. And I stayed invested until the very end. I went into this book expecting funny and cute moments. But I got so much more than that. Nova and Sayer were 100% made for each other and I will take no corrections on this. They fit together perfectly. The banter and shenanigans and chaos were all off the charts. I couldn’t get enough of them together. I appreciated how they genuinely accepted each other, mess and imperfections and all. These two were such real and honest characters. They weren’t perfect and it made this story more touching and meaningful. And that ending was those two to a T. It matched their dynamic and personalities in the best ways - a bit of chaos, some neighborly trauma, and so much banter.

Almost Functional was my first read by author and overall I enjoyed the story and would recommend when you’re looking for something with more romance than angst. It was an easy relationship, though the beginning started off choppy once these two were able to communicate they had a sweet, if not fast, connection. I will say the pacing kind of stalled in the last quarter of the book, our couple seemed to have resolved so much I couldn’t think what the last part would be… and it really, unfortunately didn't wow me as much as I’d hoped. Kind of a ho hum compared to the first 3 quarters. But I will definitely keep watch on this author going forward.

Nova moves to New York looking for a fresh start. Sayer is fresh out of a relationship that flipped his world upside down. The two of them meet in such a chaotic manor that bonds them deeper than either expected.

This was such a cute and easy to read story. It was fastpaced, flowed well, and was very easy to follow. I really enjoyed Nova and Sayer’s relationship and watching it develop throughout.

This a great romance for both teens and adults who are looking for something sweet and light. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a quick, feel good romance!

This was so cute! A little slow to get started but once I got rolling I didn’t want to stop

They met in the most unique way and clicked immediately. They had their first kiss before their first date but that first date lasted all night almost!

These two were seriously adorable together! She’s a little chaotic and he’s super steady.

I loved the introduction of the love triangle and watched that get sorted.

This book is heavy on the steam and light on the spice but the story stood out without the descriptions of all the bedroom activities but I adored how the conversation between these two happened about why she was hesitant 🥰

Both of them are at a crossroad into their lives and a series of events push them together and give them opportunities to get to know each other and become closer. They grow together and make life altering decisions together.

I would've wished to see more of Sayer standing up to his sister. The first few chapters of the book, she is the one controlling his life decisions and then just disappears from his life and we never hear about her

Nova was finally feeling secure when her job meets a sudden end and she finds herself back on the job market. Sayer is moving on from a broken relationship and rents an apartment in her block. They meet on the stairs when she drops a rug on him, and the rest is down to fate…….

This was a well written, happy and lighthearted romance with some great characters and plenty of excellent banter. It turned out to be a fun and relaxing read, which was an enjoyable change to my usual genre. With a great plot which moves at a decent pace, I recommend it for a good easy read🐈‍⬛.

This was an ARC read. I’m going to be honest, it was alright. The beginning had a lot of potential, however I found this book lack lustre in conflict and spice amongst other things.

Although a large majority of my reads are spicy, I don’t need any to actually enjoy a story, BUT keep reader interested. When your conflict happens literally before 50% and is completely dealt with at 52% the story gets boring.

I also found a lot of missing timeline that probably could have fixed this issue. This book had SO MUCH potential on being 5 stars if only if had more put into it and didn’t feel so rushed.

Light summer romance is a fun relief from my usual fare of dark fantasy, and I enjoyed Almost Functional. There are several laugh-out-loud moments (especially enjoyed the meet cute involving a coffee stained rug) The writing is very good! Had I been a beta reader, I would have questioned a couple plot points that I found to be too big a stretch to find plausible, (and the only reason I am not giving this a 5 star review) but despite those, I feel good recommending this book to anyone who enjoys romance books.

This was a amazingly fun real life romance.  Where people are clumsy, awkward and make mistakes. Where things aren't perfect, but they do they best they can and love life.  I could really relate the FMC's clumsiness and I overall love the relatability of the story and that it made me feel warm and cozy.  This is a closed door romance about two people finding each other and the life they want, later than they hoped, but definitely worth the wait.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!  I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Things aren't going well for Nova. Her career, dating life, and apartment issues are making her feel like a failure at 30. Sayer arrives and seems equally unhappy with the way his life is going at 32. Some readers may expect them to fix each other, but fortunately they don't try. As the two of them co-exist, it seems that sometimes it's enough to get through day-by-day and don't expect perfection. Because being almost functional can be a victory too if you find it with the right person! Will they get to that ultimate realization? Or is it only a myth?

This book was everything you want in a cute contemporary romcom, but the thing that stood out to me the most was how real the characters felt. Both Sayer and Nova were writing in a way where I could see myself in both the best and worst of them. A tale of not knowing where to go in life and just being along for the ride, even if it is at the back of a rickety old wooden rollercoaster with only a semi-functioning seatbelt. This was a quick, adorable read that was full of heart.

Nova sold cars until the dealership was shut down. When her boss gets a job, he hires Nova as his assistant. Sayer moved across the hall from Nova and is best friends with Nova's boss. With both Sayer and his best friend interested in Nova there was a lot to work through. I liked how the three of them resolved their conflict. Sayer and Nova were immediately attracted to each other but I loved how they interacted. Great story with examples about what is important in life.

This was my first book by Elen. It’s a love story about a shy girl Nova and a financial wizard Sayer. The story definetly has potential but for me it lacked some depth.
The pacing was ok in the first half, the second half was a bit too long, a bit too cliché, a bit too coincidental, I lost interest in several chapters.
I received a copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily. Overall the story didn’t blow me away but it has some beautiful moments.
