‘Road Kill’, Sabine Durrant’s latest psychological thriller, convinces me that she is the best writer of this genre. I’ve enjoyed all of her previous novels but the story of prep school teacher, Anna, and Finn (also known as Duff), a damaged ex-offender, and their journey from London to the south of France and the island of Porquerolles is her best yet.
Anna is lonely, bored and hurt. Her beloved stepsister, Eliza, is blanking her. Anna feels guilty about poor judgements she’s made and is desperate to apologise. When Finn, someone Anna meets on a solo evening out, suggests that she goes to Paris to do just that, Anna throws caution to the wind and agrees. He drives her to the ferry and somehow stays with her for longer than expected. As time passes, she finds herself warming to this elusive man.
Durrant makes the most of the heat wave across Europe to underpin the tension, the passion and the stress felt by this couple as they travel south. As the miles go by, they find themselves confiding in each other more and more. Back in London, a probation officer makes a couple of poor decisions. When he realises his service user is no longer in London, he knows he must be proactive if he is to prevent a possible disaster.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers, do yourself a favour and read ‘Road Kill’. It is superbly plotted, full of emotional insight and socially astute. Obviously, as the tension builds, we know it’s not going to end well. Not only are the final revelations astonishing, given what we know about all of the characters; they are also entirely credible. Highly recommended.

Sabine Durrant’s latest novel Road Kill, is an exiting thriller due out on 11th March 2027, and I was lucky enough to get a copy from NetGalley.
At the outset, we meet Anna, who was due to go on holiday to the French island of Porquerolles with her sister Eliza until Eliza cancelled at the last minute. However, when Anna has a one night stand with Finn, he offers to drive her and they both set off for France. Along the way, Anna becomes suspicious of Finn, as his stories don’t add up. Who is Finn, and why did he offer to go with her ?
Narrated by multiple characters, this book is thoroughly engaging and easy to read. The story follows two parallel threads, and I was intrigued to see how they would ultimately connect. The author expertly brings the setting to life with her amazing descriptions of the French countryside, and the relentless heat adds another layer of tension to the story.
Sabine Durrant writes so well and is such a good storyteller, that you’re guaranteed a good read when you open one of her books, and that ending left me completely stunned, what a finale ! This is a solid thriller, - as always, Sabine Durrant delivers. 4.5 stars rounded up.

I’ve read everything that Sabine Durrant has written and Road Kill is definitely one of her best.
When Anna’s trip to the South of France with her sister Eliza, is cancelled, she’s determined to get to France to see Eliza and takes up an offer from Finn, a one night stand to drive her there , which begins a tense and twisty road trip. There was an underlying feeling of tension and menace from the start of the novel as the reader is never quite sure of Finn’s intentions. The narrative told from the point of view of a probation officer points us towards Finn’s identity and this adds to the tension throughout. The French setting is atmospheric and the plotting and characterisation is superb. Despite the characters being unlikeable, Durrant brings them expertly to life and I felt completely immersed in this excellent thriller over the course of 24 hours. A compelling read that I raced through over the course of 24 hours and would highly recommend.

I really loved it! The tension was practically jumping off the page for the entire book, making for a very addictive read. I liked that there were clues throughout the book as to how things would end, but nothing so obvious that it spoiled the surprises.
I work in the Probation Service and don't think any of my colleagues would be quite as personally involved as the PO in this book, but it made for entertaining reading! I enjoyed getting his perspective to add another dimension to the story.
None of the characters were what you could call likeable, but they were vivid and interesting.
Overall, I thought this was brilliant and would definitely recommend it.

Anna is the type of woman who wears a sensible A line skirt and arranges her National Trust tea towels. Frustrated by her half sister cancelling her summer holiday in France, she has an out-of-character one night stand.
