THE STONES OF LANDANE is out now from Flame Tree Press - When Jonathan agrees to accompany his girlfriend, Nadia, on a trip to Landane, he imagines a short relaxing break in the countryside, but he quickly discovers that Nadia isn’t just drawn to the ancient Neolithic stone circle, she is obsessed by the megaliths. One in particular holds a fascination for her. Within hours, her personality begins to change, and it isn’t long before Jonathan starts to fear for her sanity. All too soon he realizes, it isn't only Nadia who is in danger

My other novels from Flame Tree Press are:

THOSE WHO DWELL IN MORDENHYRST HALL - Evil runs deep at Mordenhyrst Hall… When Grace first sets eyes on the imposing Gothic house, she is struck with an overwhelming sense that something doesn’t want her there. Her fiancé’s sister heads a coterie of Bright Young Things whose frivolous lives hide a sinister intent. Simon, Grace’s fiancé, is not the man she fell in love with, and the local villagers eye her with suspicion that borders on malevolence.

Her friend, Coralie, possesses the ability to communicate with powerful spirits. She convinces Grace of her own paranormal gifts – gifts Grace will need to draw deeply on as the secrets of Mordenhyrst Hall begin to unravel.

THE AFTER-DEATH OF CAROLINE RAND - Alli is caught between fantasy and reality, past and present, in the life of a famous singer from the 1960s and soon learns that evil infests the once-holy building she called
home. Before long, Alli's fate will be sealed, and she will learn about her role in the after-death of Caroline Rand. It begins with a chilling greeting: "Welcome to The Columbine, Miss Sinclair. You are expected."

DARK OBSERVATION - is published by Flame Tree Press. In the dark days of war-torn London, Violet has more to fear than bombs. From deep within the Earth, demonic forces are rising.

IN DARKNESS, SHADOWS BREATHE. Carol and Nessa are strangers with one thing in common, they are in the hands of an entity that knows no boundaries and crosses dimensions - bending and twisting time itself - where danger waits in every shadow

THE GARDEN OF BEWITCHMENT. Historical haunted Gothic horror set in the wilds of the Yorkshire moors - pure Bronte country - with a Bronte theme.

And - THE HAUNTING OF HENDERSON CLOSE. Ghostly horror set in Edinburgh's Old Town.

THE CROW WITCH AND OTHER CONJURINGS is my first short fiction collection and is out now from Weird House Press.

My novellas THE DARKEST VEIL, COLD REVENGE, MISS ABIGAIL'S ROOM, THE DEMONS OF CAMBIAN STREET, DARK AVENGING ANGEL, LINDEN MANOR, THE DEVIL INSIDE HER and THE SECOND WIFE are published by Crossroad Press.

My novels THE DEVIL'S SERENADE and SAVING GRACE DEVINE have also been released in new editions by Crossroad Press, as has my novel of the Lancashire Witches - THE PENDLE CURSE.

I live with a long-suffering husband and a delightful black cat who has never forgotten that her species used to be worshipped in ancient Egypt. She sees no reason why that practice should not continue. Who am I to argue?

When not slaving over a hot computer, I enjoy wandering around Neolithic stone circles and visiting old haunted houses.

DARK AVENGING ANGEL, by Catherine Cavendish, begins in the 1960's, and follows the life of a character named Jane Powell. Jane and her mother live in constant terror of her father, a man quick to use his fists under the slightest of excuses.

". . . This was the 1960's, but his attitude would have been more in tune with the 19th century."

If that were the worst she had to contend with, the story could've ended there. However, Jane has problems with bullies at school as well.

When a mysterious woman offers to look out for her--all Jane needs to do is give her three names, those of the people who have wronged her the most, to write in her cryptic ledger--Jane immediately agrees. While she believes this woman to be her personal "dark avenging angel", she quickly finds that the few others unfortunate enough to glimpse her, do not find anything remotely angelic about her.

"Some things are better off left in the dark."

I loved the idea of this shadowy figure in Jane's life. Unfortunately the majority of the book--especially the first half--deals primarily with all the little day to day details of Jane's life for years to come. Yes, her avenger makes spotty appearances, but only a few really memorable ones. As soon as we see what this entity is capable of, we are right back to Jane's routine life, in all its minute details.

". . . No one can have everything, so don't be fooled. Everything comes at a price you cannot afford . . . "

Overall, I enjoyed the concept of the "angel", and ruminating on just who/what she was, but was disappointed that there was so little shown of her throughout the whole book. This story felt more like a chronicle of Jane's entire life, with her "protector" only popping in for short cameo appearances. The characterization, however, was complete, and the ending was one that left me thinking about the entire tale as a "whole", afterwards. Some memorable moments, but too few for my personal taste, in general.

Dark Avenging Angel is a gut-wrenching tale that pulls at the readers heart strings and will get you pissed off. The trouble surrounding Jane, all the abuse she takes is enough to drive a person crazy or to a much worse place. This is a tale that piles on the anger and the abuse, giving glimpses of "YOU KNOW WHAT'S COMING AND CAN'T WAIT FOR IT" but Cavendish does anything but the routine. This tale flows fluidly and is as engaging as it gets. When the "horror" comes, it's nasty and Cavendish paces this part of the book perfectly. When it comes, it's like a super punch to the gut. And if you like twists . . . I shall say no more. Highly Recommended!!!!

Dark Avenging Angel
Samhain Publishing
Author: Catherine Cavendish

Bullied and abused by her father and her classmates, Jane is a tortured child. As she struggles to survive at the destructive hands of her father, Jane is visited by a mysterious woman who offers her protection. However, the protection comes at a price. Jane must give her the name of three people for the mysterious “angel” to collect the souls of. The souls themselves will suffer a horrendous fate, more so than Jane can even imagine.

In the first third of this book we see the dealings of Jane’s deplorable father. The actions committed by this man against Jane and her mother are appalling. The entire time I was reading this all I wanted was for Jane’s angel to come and smite this disgusting human. To my surprise, and Jane’s as well, the avenging is not instant. Cavendish forces you to suffer along with Jane. Careful to keep your revulsion in check, you will pant with excitement when things go right for this character, as rare as they may be, and you’ll curse Cavendish’s name when things go wrong…as they most certainly do.

As Jane grows up, goes to college, and seeks a post collegiate career, she is visited by her angel as well as a mysterious reoccurring dream. The settings and particulars of the dream changes, but the message does not. As the story grows, so do the clues behind the dreams. The mystery is well thought out and is perfect complement to the horror in this novel.

Once the angel begins to avenge Jane, we find out that this may be more than Jane believed would happen. The character of the angel has all of the intentions to be a nice savior, but she most certainly is not. The first victim of vengeance is a powerful and gruesome scene that is expertly described in Cavendish’s narrative. The horror in this book is sparse. By using the horror elements sparingly, Cavendish packs one hell of a punch when it is used. It is always well timed and comes in and out with precision.

Tonally, there are certainly elements of Stephen King, particularly The Shinning throughout this novel. The only other thing I can compare it to is the segment Lover’s Vow from Tales from the Darkside: The Movie. The plot between Dark Avenging Angel and Lover’s Vow have next to nothing to do with each other. It is just the tone. Each of these stories go from violence to elegance in a quick breath and tackle mystery in an entertaining way. I urge you to watch that segment after reading this book. You’ll appreciate it a little more, assuming you are one of the few people out there that loves that film.

Dark Avenging Angel is a fantastic read. This novel will consume you and your free time. It is a standout story that reminds me why I love horror literature. Samhain is releasing some of the best horror fiction in recent memory and this novel is one of the best from their great run of books and authors. Dark Avenging Angel will release on eBook platforms on August 4, 2015. Preorder it now. You won’t want to miss out on this one.

This is not a book for those who like flowery language or looking for a book to make them feel better after a long day. This is a book about Jane and the tough life she leads. There are mentions of domestic violence, verbal abuse, loneliness, eating disorders, assault, and other dark topics so be warned.

Even though serious topics are mentioned there are still moments in this book that balance out the dark moments Jane goes through. For example, Suki the cat makes everything feel better as I understand the comfort a little black car can bring to one's life. Also the love that exists between Jane and her mom is wonderful. Ms. Cavendish did a good job balancing the book in my opinion as I wasn't overwhelmed with intensely dark emotions or felt the light moments glossed over the bad.

I didn't want to put this book down as I wanted to see how Jane would turn out from all her hardships and when and how her "angel" would strike those that Jane added to the ledger. It was quite a ride and I definitely want to read more by Catherine Cavendish.

Book Review originally published here: http://www.iheartreading.net/reviews/...

I’ve read several books by Catherine Cavendish so far and Dark Avenging Angel, while not being my favorite of the bunch, was a good addition my growing collection of reads by this author.

Jane has a horrible life. Her Dad is a filthy, mean, evil man who likes to hurt her mother and occasionally her too. He wants her to be the very best at everything but instead of providing support, he provides criticism. Then an angel shows up, at least Jane thinks she’s an angel, and she promises to take revenge on her father, on Jane’s behalf. All she needs is Jane’s permission to writes her father’s name in her ledger. Jane refuses at first, but the more her father torments her, the more she wants to give in. And when she does, she has no idea of the terrible things she’s unleashed. She must choose three names total. Three names of people who will suffer at the hands of her dark avenging angel.

The premise was original and entertaining, so I was looking forward to diving in and enjoying the story. It is quite enjoyable too, although the book seemed to rush a little fast through Jane’s life. On top of that, despite everything that happened, I couldn’t feel that sympathetic toward Jane. I’ve no idea why. I mean, she goes through hell during her childhood and when she grows up, life doesn’t threat her much better, but yet I had trouble emphatizing with her.

The writing is good, the plot is fast-paced, and ultimately it’s a solid dark revenge story. Whatever you do, you better not mess with Jane.

I had a very tough time liking Jane. I can't even say I really ever *did* like her. She's passive and doesn't stand up for herself. Given her abusive childhood, I can see where that came from. But it made it hard to like her when she let people get away with things that she should have been screaming about.

On the other hand, having a dark angel on hand to mete out justice (like a superhero, but, you know, waaaaaay scarier) meant that Jane didn't have to act to get revenge. She just had to pass along a name and (eventually) the wrong-doer would get their just reward.

Still, I had a tough time with her. I do think the hardest thing was how she had no idea what she was getting herself into when she gave her angel the first name. Unfortunately, once she'd started, there was no way to stop. She was in for the long haul, regardless of how she felt about it.

Frankly, Catherine Cavendish did an excellent job balancing Jane's past against the choices she had to make later on. Jane was an abused, lonely girl who grew into a woman who had a hard time liking herself and let people walk all over her. There was something oddly satisfying in following her to the bitter end.

Another slam dunk for Catherine Cavendish! Who doesn't love a little revenge? Who hasn't fantasized about people who have wronged you getting what they deserve? Dark Avenging Angel tickles the Id while tackling sometimes brutal subject matter. Jane's life is literally a living hell, suffering the wrath of an abusive father, creepy, horrible bosses and so much more. There are some tough scenes in here, all handled deftly by a writer who knows how to pull on your emotions. Jane's avenging angel is there to make wrongs right, or is she? Masterfully crafted, Dark Avenging Angel is a great book to kick off the coming Halloween season.

Jane grew up as a child abused by her father and constantly put down, giving her low self-esteem in school and life. In Jane’s misery a mysterious, dark woman appears and promises to avenge those who hurt her, three souls in return for anything she ever wanted. At the time, Jane calls her an angel. The first name for the list is her father, but vengeance isn’t immediate. Jane grows up and manages to carve out a normal life for herself. When the angel comes again to remind Jane of their deal, she refuses to give the angel a third name and Jane comes to see exactly what her angel is.
This was a surprising novella. At first, as Jane describes her life growing up, the constant abuse and bullying took its toll and I kept waiting for Jane to fight back. When Jane finally meets her angel and realizes what power she holds, things become much more interesting. I loved when Jane began to stand up to her misogynistic boss and became her own person. The twist with the deceased singer and Jane’s dream world gave made Jane and her angel even more engrossing. Trying to figure exactly what Jane’s angel was and the motives behind what she wanted became darker and darker as Jane grew up and the fight between Jane’s well-being and seeking justice comes to a head. A surprising ending wrapped up this thrilling and quick read.

Another wonderful horror tale from the keyboard of Catherine Cavendish. In this one, a woman, Jane, is visited by an entity with the offer to take three souls she selects.
The real world horrors in this story easily tie the supernatural ones for inducing terror. Jane’s duplicitous boss, and especially her brutal, abusive father, create harrowing, powerless scenarios for Jane. When Jane lets loose her Dark Avenging Angel, Cavendish gives us a gut-wrenching description of vengeance delivered, and a foreshadowing that such satisfaction for Jane must come with a price.
Gripping from the first pages, you’ll love this story and its satisfying twist of an ending.

Jane Powell has been bullied and abused by her father as far back as she can remember, but Jane sees what she terms, "her angel", a ghostly apparition she believes protects her. When downtrodden Jane finds herself in a job where her boss is abominable she finally makes use of this avenging angel, but everything has a price, can Jane withstand the cost of her wishes?

I loved this dark horror novella, which is well paced and well written. I was immediately absorbed into this read and became sympathetic to Jane's woes. The horror element in the book is creepy, but for me the ending was just a little too tame, otherwise I would have awarded it the full five stars. I look forward to reading more from this hugely talented author.

Review: DARK AVENGING ANGEL by Catherine Cavendish

Nobody wants to live a life like Jane; sadly, too many do. But most grossly abused and denigrated children and adolescents don't ever find their rescue fantasies taking living form. For Jane, the arrival of her dark angel brings momentary hope, but relief doesn't occur for years. Meanwhile, the destructive seeds planted in Jane's mind and spirit during childhood continue to blossom, with the fruits of victimization, lack of confidence, eating disorders--and Jane's  complete inability to perceive herself or her world through the eyes of others. A riveting story, DARK AVENGING ANGEL plants unforgettable roots in the reader's mind.

Catherine Cavendish's novella Dark Avenging Angel is a consistently creepy and fascinating tale about a woman and her "Guardian Angel" that comes with a price. In exchange for her protection, the main character, Jane, must offer up the souls of those that have wronged her.

I loved the premise and the follow through. The individuals Jane chooses are so reprehensible I found myself cheering her on at times. As the story develops, however, it becomes increasingly difficult for Jane to live up to her end of the bargain.

Part revenge story, part ghost story reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining, Dark Avenging Angel is a wonderful novella that provides plenty of scares.

Jane is a good girl, who tries her very best, but nothing is ever good enough for her father. Her father is verbally and physically abusive, and Jane finds solace in a mysterious dark angel who offers Jane protection in return for three names of souls who deserve to suffer. DARK AVENGING ANGEL is a macabre story of revenge. I was quickly drawn into Jane’s story and felt for her suffering. I loved the “angel” and DARK AVENGING ANGEL shows you may not always be ready for the payment laid out in the fine print on the deals you make. DARK AVENGING ANGEL is a beautiful and haunting horror story.

Dark Avenging Angel wasn't quite the novel I expected - it's something deeper, more well-rounded, and more emotionally relevant because of it. What Catherine Cavendish has crafted here is a tale of human cruelties first, and supernatural vengeance second.

Our story begins with an exploration of Jane's childhood, and a profile of her abusive father. He is a cruel and violent man who emotionally degrades her, intellectually humiliates her, and (eventually) physically abuses her. To call him a monster would be an insult to things that go bump in the night, so let's just call him what Jane calls him - a bastard. There are so many scenes here that have an impact, but the destruction of her dolls is pivotal, and her confession of "The first time my father tried to kill me" really sets the stage for what's to come.

While supernatural retribution for such human crimes is a large part of the story, along with the mortal price to be paid for such help, it's not (as I expected) the focus. Instead, this is very much Jane's story, and she's a difficult woman to read about. She's a sad, cold, somewhat pathetic young woman, and even if we completely understand how she came to be that way, you can't help but hope there's a transformation coming. The specter of her angel is what makes her intriguing, and the mystery of her dreams what makes her compelling, but Cavendish asks for some patience before it all comes together.

Make no mistake, Dark Avenging Angel is a horror novel, but it's more about suspenseful chills than outright horror. Ironically, as much as I generally dislike tidy little epilogues that tie up loose ends, I thought the 'Sad and Lonely Death' article from the Midwest Times was a fitting touch.

I'm not going to lie, that was the weirdest thing I have ever read. Like good weird until the very end.

Jane lived a pretty crappy life. I don't begrudge her for her choices because in similar circumstances I would have done the same thing. But at about 54% of the way through, every single character in the book seemed to collectively lose their humanity. I understand that it was a bad world and that it was difficult for women to make their way in the working world while Jane was growing up and becoming a notable woman in the workforce. But it seemed like the characters did a 180 after Stuart and Jane have their scene in the photocopy room.

And I get it, not everyone is what they seem but for Jane to be able to have three people in her life who deserved to die this horrendous death seemed a little far fetched to me. It was too convenient that all these things happened in her life and she got off scot-free. I think the dreams is where it got a bit murky for me. They didn't seem to add up to what I was anticipating and didn't really add a lot to the story imo. Except when we got the semi-info dump at the end to explain everything under the sun. It was almost as if the author wanted to make sure the reader understood all the foreshadowing and little hints that had been dropped along the way and came to the "right" conclusion. Which is fine, it's always good to confirm. I just wasn't a fan of the way it was actually done.

Otherwise, this was one hell of a ride and I was completely enthralled. It was a definite page turner and if you want something that will keep you interested and turning the pages until the very end, I would pick this one up.

Overall: 3.5/5 stars. I'm not sure what to think tbh but I did enjoy it.

If there's one thing I enjoy about this author's books it's that her writing is just so easy to read (even the parts that make me shake in my socks). I seem to get carried along very happily in the flow of her prose. Dark Avenging Angel is a new "take" on the average angel books in that this one comes straight out of Hell.
Jane Powell starts the story as a young girl, living with her loving mother and terribly cruel, abusive, father who regularly beats her mother - often enough to put her in hospital. As a result and thanks to him Jane has a traumatic childhood. Yet a dark figure appears to her, usually at times when she's most terrified, who tells her all will well. The reason for this apparition is explained when Jane is older. Jane can "nominate" three names that the angel writes in a ledger and, in due time, the angel will reap horrifying revenge on them. Of course, her father's name is first on that list. As Jane starts working she experiences dreams that hold a message for her and, at the same time, another joins her father on the revenge list - her boss who tries to rape her. This is the time that Jane realises the angel is not out of heaven and she glimpses the horror of the eternal torture that are meted out on her tormenters.

All is explained at the end and the threads are joined up like a well woven jumper, leaving me, the reader, perfectly satisfied (if not a little shaken) with this novella that I read in one day. Definitely a page-turner from this talented writer of horror stories.

Jane has had a difficult childhood at the hands of her abusive father. The man is an abhorrent character that is easy to hate given the circumstances. Her classmates also abuse her until her Angel comes along and asks for the names of those who have done her wrong. After two names being given, Janes goes on to lead a somewhat normal life until her angel returns and reminds her that she needs more names or else.

Dark Avenging Angel deals out vengeance and justice all in the name of helping Jane. But, while it is horrifying the story is about Jane and her path in life. She may not have had the best life, but she is a good person and feels morally torn when she finds out what her angel does with the names she gives her. I found Jane difficult to like – how could she allow herself to be a doormat and be treated so horribly by so many people. But, with the way her father treated her, she probably did not know any difference. Her story was heartbreaking for me to read and I had to put the book down and take a deep breath before going on. Jane eventually gives in to the angel, but it costs her a lot to do it.

This was a well written, horrifying, mysterious, and fantastically told story. It will hook you from the beginning and keep you attention at the end.

From the start of this book you will feel all the pain that Jane goes through in her life..

From being abused by her father, to being hurt by men and friends that she thought she could trust. Life was definitely not easy for her, so you could not help but cheer a little when the "angel" shows up and offers to help get rid of the people in her life that have abused and hurt her.

But then not all is what it seems because there is a price to pay for accepting her angels help and that price is very high.

I thought this author wrote this story in such a way that you could not help but feel everything Jane goes through and how much pain she has gone through in her life. I was pulled in from the start of this book and could not put it down once I had started. This book really pulled so many emotions from me, from cheering when she gets her revenge, to cringing when she finds out the price she must pay.

I will be honest and say I am on the fence with the ending because it left me feeling a little unsatisfied. I think I just wanted to know more about what happens and who was the last one. But other then that I really loved this book and would definitely recommend it!

I've never read anything from this author before but if this book is anything to go by, I'd definitely read more. This was quite dark and horrific.

Cavendish has made a really freaky world here with bad bad guys and a likeable (if also slightly pathetic) leading woman. I mean, I understand that she's been ridiculed by her father her whole life and pretty much walked over by most people because of that but, even knowing this back story, I found it hard to feel anything strong toward her.

It didn't put me off the story as a whole though, if I really didn't like her I would have DNF'd it fairly quickly. But I didn't and I'm glad I didn't because the story was unique and interesting.

Having already read the author's previous title, The Pendle Curse, I thought I knew what to expect from Dark Avenging Angel, but this book took me completely by surprise. The main character, Jane, is complex, inconsistent, and I spent much of the novel second-guessing the reliability of her narrative. How many of Jane's perceived enemies were actually deserving of retribution? It's up to the reader to decide.

And any book that leaves me wondering, leaves me thinking after I've turned the final page, is deserving of five stars. Can't wait to see what Catherin Cavendish has in store next.
