A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

The Harrowmaster of the Alpha Legion has united his disparate troops. His attempt to create something new and terrible has not gone unnoticed, pitting him against the hated Imperium of Mankind, even while he deals with infighting from the warriors under his command.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Solomon Akurra returns. First seen in Harrowmaster, he now controls the Alpha Legion and seeks to do something more with their pooled resources. But his rise has attracted unwanted attention. This is your chance to see if he has what it takes to lead the most slippery Legion of them all.

THE STORY

Solomon Akurra dreams of empire.

As Harrowmaster, he has united feuding forces within the Alpha Legion under his command and conquered entire star systems. Wielding what he claims to be the Pale Spear, his primarch's weapon, Solomon is carving a new future. Many renegade warlords seek to enslave humanity, but the Ghost wants more. He seeks to shatter the Imperium and rebuild humanity anew.

However, ambition attracts enemies, and the Imperium rises in force to destroy Solomon's Ghost Legion and his burgeoning new world. To defend what's his, the Harrowmaster must test his martial prowess and ingenuity to the limit. He is prepared to play the long game, but as Imperial assassins lurk in the shadows and fury and dissent fester within the ranks of his Legion, will the terrible price of Solomon's vision prove too high a cost?

Written by Mike Brooks. Narrated by Alex Lanipekun. Runtime 10 hours and 11 minutes approx.

Mike Brooks was born in Ipswich, Suffolk and moved to Nottingham when he was 18 to go to university. He’s stayed there ever since, and now lives with his wife, two cats, two snakes and a collection of tropical fish. When not working for a homelessness charity he plays guitar and sings in a punk band, watches football (soccer), MMA and nature/science documentaries, goes walking in the Peak District or other areas of splendid scenery, and DJs wherever anyone will tolerate him.

And, y’know, writes.

I enjoyed Harrowmaster so much and i was really looking forward to this, i hate to say that i was really let down. I was bored throught the majority of the book, i felt like nothing was happening and we weren't getting anywhere and the ending seemed very rushed and unresolved

Fun, fast-paced. Builds on Harrowmaster but could also be a decent stand-alone. Still has some elements of stock-characters/plot-lines, but Mike Brooks is always good for a few great twists (one of my favorite newer BL authors). Would recommend

spoiler free.

all and all, ghost legion (the 2nd book in Mike Brooks Akurra story) was a bit of disappointment.
I was beyond excited to pick this up! i mean it just released today & i didn’t put it down once! but maybe those high expectations got the best of me?

the characters for sure had there moments!
but only a few of them did, because there is A LOT going on in here. this book has like 5 different factions in it, so some subplots just feel a little short imo.

if you like high action books, i think you’ll highly highly enjoy this. unfortunately, those type of books aren’t my personal favourite so ‘ghost legion’ is an unfortunate victim to my personal taste. but hey, that’s how books are. someones 3 star is another persons 5 star.

maybe i’ll update this in the future with more, in regards to plot and ending etc. but i want to avoid spoilers for the people that may be reading it in the coming weeks and months :).

The Imperial POVs are well written, and the awfully named New Alliance is a great idea.

Solomon, however, remains uninteresting.

Another fantastic entry into the WH40k lore by Mike Brooks. Another Alpha Legion adventure with more twists and turns than a pit full of snakes. You can probably step into this without having read "Harrowmaster" although some passing familiarity with WH40k and it's factions (especially Alpha Legion) might help you get acquainted and understand some of the reveals.

The first major kudos I have to give this (and the other Alpha Legion books from Mike Brooks) is how well he does at making tactical galaxy-brained genius characters and plot points that feel well-thought out, that don't feel like they came from nowhere if you were paying attention. The second is how well he does with a limited runway, you're watching the remaining pages count down and wondering how it can all be wrapped up and he always bloody well manages it.

Had very high expectations because Harrowmaster, and started off great. But some characters are written with absolute cringe millennial humor which sucks you right out of the book. Plot begins to fall apart and feel incredibly unfocused as the narrative continues. And lastly the Alpha Legions gimic of plans within plans rips apart the books strongest plot (which was a side plot because the main characters are very weak in this one) in the most uninteresting way imaginable. Highly recommend skipping this one and unfortunately the second dud in a row for Mike Brooks.

He's done it again.

Mike Brooks has far outdone himself with this novel. There are loose ends tied up. Continuation of storylines you wanted to see. A look at what the renegade life could be. Well done, sir.

Not a bad book by any means but not really what I was hoping for as the follow up to Harrowmaster. The plot was just fine and it did have some really good character moments, but it was really just a big battle book without the scheming and the elaborate plots I want from an Alpha Legion book.

Overall, definitely a better read than its predecessor book. The battle for the planet was engaging and I really enjoyed Solomon’s interactions with his friend Kyrin. Definitely excited to see the continuation of the story and what the Pillar of Dreams vision for Solomon will entail

4D Chess moves amidst a planetary war

Like the varied Imperial and Renegade/Chaos forces involved in this 'small' war book. The shenanigans involved with the Alpha Legion and their equally shadowy Imperial enemies is a nice touch

Honestly was really excited about this one, but they (admittedly maybe GW’s fault) tried to set or reinforce the seed of female space marines with the dishonor guard. And most of the Twist were honestly predictable.

Very good writing, fun characters. They did lose me in the 3rd quarter because it was dragging, revealing a bunch of new characters that really only showed up to die. That last quarter though brought me back fantastic ending.

Quite disappointing follow up to Harrowmaster.

Nothing of note really happened in this book, save for a few character deaths that was only really to tie up loose ends.

It’s always great to see the Alpha Legion in action, and this book actually does a pretty good job at that. Each warband has their own distinct combat methods and it’s interesting to see how they all still seem cohesive underneath the banner of the legion.

But what drags this novel down so much is that it is only combat. A pure war of attrition while the other warbands start to doubt Solomon Akurra. Action is always my least favorite parts about 40k novels, which is why I wasn’t a big fan.

I’m sure this novel will age better in due time, especially if the sequel teased at the end comes to fruition.
