A Reckless Obsession

Not yet published
Expected 13 Oct 26
I thought walking in on my boyfriend cheating on me was going to be the wildest thing that happened to me today.

Until I see a man riding a motorcycle—without a helmet—about to meet an untimely fate with oncoming traffic, and I decide to intervene.

My car may be wrecked and my head might hurt, but it’s the imposing tattooed man with the gray-blue eyes that steals my breath. Instead of reeling from my early morning betrayal, I’m captivated by Arson Evermore.

I don’t think I’m ever going to see him again, but when my ex won’t leave me alone, somehow it’s Arson who comes to my rescue. He convinces me that the only way to get my ex to move on is to find someone new.

And he makes me an offer.

Fake date him through the holidays, and my ex will surely back off. But when our kisses for show start happening behind closed doors, the lines between us blur.

My heart gets involved.

Somehow, he always finds me when I need him most—his protective instincts shielding me from my past. But when his secrets are exposed, what if I realize it’s him I needed protection from all along?

Boy oh boy, where do I even begin with this review?!

I’ve followed Kristie Zarra on TikTok for a while now and have always loved her book recommendations and storytelling. So when I found out she was writing a book, I was SO excited because I knew I had to read it. Then I saw there was an opportunity to sign up for an ARC, immediately signed up, and somehow ended up being one of the lucky few who got to read it early!

Now, onto what I actually thought about the book...

I FREAKING LOVED IT!

I started it last night and finished it today because I genuinely could not stop reading. Every time I had to put it down because stupid chores got in the way 😂, I couldn't stop thinking about it and wondering what was going to happen next.

I absolutely loved Arson and Macauley and watching their relationship come together—even if it was a little reckless. 😂 I especially loved how Arson basically decided Macauley was going to be part of his life and was determined to keep her in his orbit. Maybe some people will find it a little messed up, but me? I found it endearing. 😂

And Carter? HATED HIM FROM THE GET-GO. I knew something was going to go down with him eventually. I mean, Arson and Macauley fell in love pretty damn quickly and there was still a whole lot of book left, so I knew we weren't getting off that easily. 😂

I also LOVED the side characters—Nix, Ash, Raine, Brim, and yes, even Kyden. I loved how they became this big found family and how they're always there for each other. I'm really hoping we eventually get a Brim and Kyden book, and I would absolutely eat up an enemies-to-lovers story between Nix and Raine. 👀 We shall see...

But I have to say, I think Ash was my favorite side character. I loved his golden retriever energy, especially knowing what he'd been through. I am REALLY hoping he gets his own story because I need more of him!

The storyline flowed really well, and I thought there was the perfect balance of plot and spice throughout the book. I also loved that there was some suspense mixed in because it kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I really only had one tiny thing that bugged me, and this is so minor that it might sound fucking stupid. 😂 Every time Macauley was near Arson or wearing something of his, she mentioned how he smelled like amber and smoke. Normally, I don't mind those little details at all, but it felt like it happened every. single. time. After a while, it started feeling a little repetitive to me. Again, SUPER minor and completely a personal preference, but it was the one thing I noticed while reading.

Overall, I REALLY enjoyed this book. It hooked me from the beginning, made me fall in love with the main characters AND the side characters, gave me the perfect mix of plot, spice, romance, and suspense, and left me already wanting stories about half the damn friend group. 😂

I feel incredibly lucky that I got the opportunity to read this as an ARC, and I can't wait to see what Kristie Zarra writes next. If this is what we get from her first book, I'm definitely excited to see what else she has in store! ❤️

ARC REVIEW
I can't even begin to describe how much I love this book.
I loved the representation of different body types, especially as someone who is a little on the bigger side. This book made me feel seen and gave me a new way to see and love my body, and I appreciated that so much.
I also loved the realistic representation of chronic illness and chronic pain. While I don't suffer from migraines specifically, I could relate to her experience of having to take so much time off work and worrying that it might be the last straw for your boss. Seeing how well Nyesha handled it and cared about her was beautiful, and the way Arson just immediately helped her without question was just too sweet.
The found family gave me the coziest, happiest feelings ever. Arson and his brothers have such a strong relationship, and the way they immediately accepted Macauley into their lives and cared about her was so beautiful to see. And then there's Raine, the best friend a girl could ever want. Their bond was incredible. You could feel how much they loved each other like it was a living, breathing thing.
And don't even get me started on how hard Arson worked to make sure Macauley became a part of his life. Sure, his methods were maybe a little illegal and would totally not be cool or sweet IRL, but it was romantic as hell to read about it. I mean, having someone who would go that far to make sure you were in their life is kind of swoon-worthy, honestly.
The emotional rollercoaster this book took me on was WILD, and I loved every minute of it. I genuinely struggled to put it down.
It was a little rough reading the fatphobia, but I think it was so important for the plot. Unfortunately, it was also a very realistic part of Macauley's experience and, sadly, one that too many women can relate to. It was beautiful watching her break through that and realise that she deserved to find her people, the kind of people who lift her up, love her exactly as she is, and never make her feel like she has to hide who she is.
This book made me laugh, hurt, rage, swoon, and want to wrap the characters in a giant hug. It also felt like it healed parts of me I didn’t even realise needed healing. I absolutely adored it.

OMG! Thank you for allowing me to read this as an ARC!

When I first saw this book looking for ARC readers, I was like "what the heck, this looks good!" So I apply for it. And forget about it. Saturday comes around and I'm hooked from the first paragraph. Don't get me wrong, the cover was great, but the book, WAS SOOOO GOOD!

This has easily become my 2nd favorite book I have read this year (next to Grim by DJ Krimmer and Joe Arden). I need a physical copy immediately!!

This book was written so well! The story didn't miss any points and everything matched up.

Ugh I want to move to Michigan to find me a guy like this! I loved the angst and yearning from Arson. I freaking HATED Carter AND his father! I loved the other characters, like Raine, Donna, Nyesha, Ash and Nix, the dogs!

I loved Macauley! I loved how her character was different from the other books I have ready. I loved that it showed flaws and thing and Arson coming in to teach her how to love herself. There is love out there for everyone! You just don't have to look for it!

Overview/Spoiler: Macauley goes home from work one day and finds her bf in bed with someone else. So Macauley flips out, takes a drive to clear her mind and gets into an accident. AAAAND the rest is history. Read the book to find out more!

Ever since discovering Kristie on TikTok, I could never skip a post from her recommendations to her “why did my mind immediately go to…”. I always hoped she would eventually write a book and she👏did👏not👏disappoint👏

I ended up with an ARC of this book and when I applied for it I never expected to receive it but thankfully I was one of the lucky ones that did.

I went in with an open mind, but honestly I didn’t need it. By chapter 3? I was hooked. Without giving too much away it was just a great job of the tropes. Cause any one who knows me, knows I love a good stalker romance and faking dating trope.
Spice?✅ Plot?✅ Characters I loved? ✅ Characters I wanted to punch in the face?✅

Honestly I can’t wait for any futures works from Kristie cause if this is the first? Sign me up for all of them.

Thanks Kristie for getting me out of my reading slump

I got this book as an ARC, and I genuinely think this was the best book I’ve read this year. It has literally everything I wanted in a book. You want the perfect blend of spice and plot then i highly suggest you pick this book up. It was phenomenal and I cannot wait to see more from this author. These characters truly stick with you! I keep finding myself wondering how they are and what they are up to.
