Hovey is surprising in many ways. He's more prolific than almost anyone, yet obviously does the necessary work to make a good mystery. This is his first; it's filled with complex, compelling characters, a grisly, realistic chain of murders, and believable police work. Too many characters can dilute the emotional impact and reader-bond, but Hovey handles his ensemble cast like an experience pro, letting us learn the nuanced identity of each player with efficiency. His portrayal of small-town Minnesota is spot-on, as it should be since he lives there. Smooth writing, clever twists, and a surprise shocker for the resolution make this a dynamite debut.

I actually loved this book. This story took place in Pine City, Minnesota and I live not far from there and I actually recognized some of the places he referenced in his book.
Kudos to Mr Hovey for a well thought out plot.
I never would have guessed the ending. The ending maybe? did seem to end to quickly.

This was the first novel written by Dean Hovey. His novels are based in the area of Pine City area in Minnesota. The landmarks are accurate lend a very local feeling to his story. The story was well written and once started was tough to put down.

A good story, with a good twists and turns. The writing was lacking at times, and the editor could have done better.
