AE-RAN KIM was born in Incheon, South Korea, the youngest of three daughters. She has won the Hankook Ilbo Literary Award, Kim Yu-jeong Literary Award, Lee Hyo-seok Literary Award, and the Prix de l'Inaperçu, among others, for her short fiction and collections. My Brilliant Life is her first novel.
Second book by this author after 바깥은 여름. A beautiful short story collection picturing the lives of ordinary people experiencing their own losses and hopes.
With this book I learned to adore the language of this author. Small waves of motions and thoughts touch the heart of the reader. In the end, one has no choice but to feel for the protagonist.
While I liked most stories, some were better, some not so much as is mostly the case with short story collections. I really liked half the stories though: 숲속 작은 집, 좋은 이웃, 이물감 and 안녕이라 그랬어.
Of the (lengthy) list of authors on June's recommendation's list, Kim has won my favorite. A combination of evocative beautiful prose, complex and interesting characters, imaginative situations rife with tension and arc that even manage to be thought provoking about our current society. This collection seems particularly concerned with real estate woes in modern Korea and class division sometimes closely related to these investment gains and losses. Very real; I see it and hear about it all the time. My favorite (it's hard to pick) was the first story with the older actress attending a home party of a well-to-do friend of a friend. The cast of characters was amazing, each so interesting and layered, and the plot was paced so well. Not that much happened actually if you think about it but a full dramatic arc was played out deftly. I could tell that this was a sophisticated, mature author who exercised her craft with a delicate touch. Many of her protagonists provoked sympathy (especially in the last story, getting the wallpapering done or the titular story's protagonist), but I preferred the ones that were tinged a bit pathetic. The ones that made me roll my eyes a bit or snicker or sigh a bit (the latter in recognition.) The overthinking of the renter in the foreign land (with the cleaning lady), the clinginess of the social-media stalking ex-husband, the daughter that resents/pities/loves her less-educated mother. I look forward to reading a full-length novel of hers.
🍂Brilliantly uncomfortable, but a little too fleeting by the end🍂
Kim Ae-ran always makes me squirm in the best way, and the first half of this collection was sharp in exposing hypocrisy in everyday kindness. Stories like 홈 파티 and 숲속 작은집 made me reflect on whether my own “kind” acts are really selfless. That was powerful. But many stories felt too short to build real connection. 안녕이라 그랬어 and 빗방울처럼 ended before I could invest, leaving me a little disappointed. Perhaps that’s the author’s intent, but I wanted more depth.
burjuva dertler derlemesi. şaka şaka kitap incelemelerine göz atıp doğru bakış açısından okunur ve metaforlar incelenirse insana kendini düşündüren bir kitap oluyor çoğu yerinde kendine rastlamak mümkündür.
