Tomoyo has returned to school, and had the guts to tell all the popular girls off and take Maria's side. She and Maria seem to be slowly becoming friends, as only Maria and Yusuke know the secret "goth" side of Tomoyo that she doesn't let others see.

Speaking of Yusuke, he has confessed to Maria now, but she turned him down.....Not good when the confession happens in front of the entire class! But, the 2 remain friends, in spite of his feelings, and he still seems determined to draw out Maria's true nature. Is he just doing all of this to keep Shin from getting Maria?!?

Speaking of Shin, he's volunteered to be the accompanist for the class in the Choir competition. Maria has been picked to be in charge of the class choir for the competition, against her own will, because the teacher really has it in for her. Can Shin and Yusuke convince the class to sing for Maria....or will the Choir end up only being 4 people? Will Shin tell Maria his true feelings (for her)?!?

Also, a girl that has been gone from school for awhile is returning. How will everyone handle this?

Shin,Yusuke and Maria start to organise the choir for their class.

Unfortunately,Maria still has enemies in her classroom that are starting to target Yusuke for his assistance towards her.

Maria is also thawing bit by bit,by the people who prove that they actually want to be her friends.

Note: This is not the first time that I've read this. If I remember correctly, I read this last year or sometime towards the end of 2011.

"If you want things to change, don’t wait for someone to change it for you. Go change it yourself.”

The beginning of this volume of Akuma to Love Song wasn’t very interesting for me, perhaps its because I don’t like Nippachi all that much. As usual, the portrayal of school drama—particularly the vileness of the girls—is so well executed that the emotions will successfully reach the readers. Nakamura Ayu is particularly hateful (do such people really exist?). Speaking of despicable characters, I think it is unnecessary to say how much I hate the sensei. Mostly, the boys simply seem to be on the backdrop of all these, and yet they too have a very important role.

"I have to accept that who I want to become, and who I can actually become are different."

Even if this is a manga, the narrations are quite powerful, and there are potent pieces of symbolism every now and then. One will be under the impression that the thoughts Kawai Maria expresses are sometimes contrary to her actions, but it just proves that her character is complex, and is not merely what is seen on the surface.

"Because sticking through with a lie to protect someone, is probably harder than telling the truth.”

On that note, in this installment we can see the improvement of Kanda Yuusuke’s character; or better yet, his true self is beginning to be shown (and of course that is a good thing; I like the real him much more). Even his illustration will be changed slightly—he doesn’t appear as cheerful and childish anymore but somehow hot. Kawai said herself that Yuusuke didn’t like her very much at the beginning, and yet in this volume we can see how much he has come to like her—from taking the cross and defending her in front of the class, even if it means he has to tell a lie. When the whole thing is finally seen on his perception, the readers can have a glimpse of his conflicting emotions, and how he himself isn’t so sure either about what’s real and what’s not. And that part when Maria herself decides to lie to him just so she cannot corrupt those who are kind anymore? It hurts. The relationship between these two characters is quite intricate and not as simple as it seems: they both hide their intentions to discover the intentions of others. Moreover, I think Kanda Yuusuke is such a unique male protagonist, especially for a shoujo manga.

"I thought it’d be a good idea to do something easy and have you owe me.”

I already mentioned that I just love Meguro, but sadly in this installment he isn’t shown very much (I’m not complaining, I like Kanda Yuusuke, anyway). And when Kanda finally says that he might be serious about Kawai? That is quite a fierce scene between the two friends. Meguro Shin is a very interesting male lead for a shoujo manga; he’s such a nice change from the usual scene. He could be the guy I’d fall in love with—seemingly indifferent and aloof, but he’s just so nice and caring, but not in the sense that he can be suffocating or Gary Stu-ish. I consider him as the “tall, dark and handsome” kind (for some reason fair skin doesn’t seem to suit him in my opinion). Despite him being sulky and all that he’s actually quite cute especially when he gets embarrassed.

Akuma to Love Song is gradually progressing to an even greater plot with more complex and deep characters. But despite that I won't give this five-stars but only 4.5/5. Indeed, the protagonists have developed enormously but I find something lacking. In some sense this is much better than the first, but in its entirety, volume one was more whole. The beauty of this manga lies in the fact that it is not purely about romantic love—but also about friendship, identity, acceptance and things that matter.

Maria is a queen and her class does not deserve her

I am continuing to love Maria, who sees through people and is blunt so most other teens hate her. The bullying seems ridiculously extreme though, so I don't know if it's because this is fiction or if they go hard in Japan. I really want the bullies to get their due and for Maria to make more friends without having to totally change herself, as I think she's great the way she is.

This series definitely has promise. I am enjoying the characters and how they are developing. I like the plot, and while both description and title almost imply slightly fantasy elements to this book, so far there isn't any, and I actually really like that.
I like that there was definite growth for the characters in this volume, especially Maria, but at the same time she has a long way to go still.
The choral element only came in halfway through this volume, so expect it to continue in the next volume, and am anxious to see where that storyline leads.
I am definitely glad I picked up the series, but will reserve recommendation until the final volume of the series.

The drama kicked up quite a few notches in this volume! I was wondering if the Tomoyo arc would help clear the air, but it looks like Maria's redemption story isn't going to come that easy. Tomori naming one of her bullies reads as a bold power move. The girls felt as if they were one mind before under the whims of Ayu. In a way, it still feels like that's the case, but I'm starting to see how Ayu's projecting her own insecurities onto Maria whilst stubbornly refusing to see beyond the image she's created for the new girl. Tomori and the translation team also use biblical language effectively to illustrate Maria's influence in her class. For better or worse? It depends on the situation.

Some readers will be disappointed by the teacher's actions in this volume, yet I feel there's a harsh reality to it. He's used to running his class one way and desperate to keep his control that finding a way to target an unruly student makes him feel more powerful. Him getting called out on it was delicious. The dynamic between Maria and Yusuke felt strained this volume with feelings being revealed and some language regarding the latter's intentions for her (which made me a little uncomfortable). That said, Tomori's still able to balance the high school pettiness with a self awareness and perusal to find a place in the world (even if it's high school) that makes this shojo manga one I'm still curious to see develop.

I still really hate the teacher- what a jerk! I live Maria's bluntness to him and Ayu. I really hate her too- cant stand bratty little snots like her.
I wish Maria would realize these people are not worth it and shes fine as she is. I wish Yusuke was nicer to her, but he's just being blunt so not as bad as the others. Also glad Tomoyo has turned out to be a nice person when she thinks for herself.

Ah high school, where we judge everyone on their looks… We have the boy who fakes it, the weak girl that hides who she really is, the boy who doesn’t care about anything (but really does), the shallow girl who leads a pack of idiots and finally, Maria, who is just being herself which everyone thinks is the devil… Fun times ahead, I see! Really different and not your typical shojo. Deals with bullying and finding one's place. I will definitely stick with this series.

Still nothing supernatural. The relationships between the girls is still super weird. I don't like how the boys always have to be rivals, either.

This is one really confusing story.

I know, I know. It's been AGES since I've reviewed a book, and I still have like 20 other books that I've already read, but I have to review.

Anyway, I remember reading this book before! I started this series with volume 2. (It's SOOOO awesome to skip volume 1, right? -_-)
I saw this sitting on the library one day, a LOOONG LOOOONG time ago, and I thought it was pretty interesting because it was new AND the art was pretty! And I was at the library, and it really didn't hurt to check out a book when it was FOR FREE, right? (The only time you need to pay the library is when you have overdue fees or you lose the book and have to pay for it. I've never lost a book but my overdue fees . . .)

ANYWAY. I remember checking this book out, reading, like, half of it. And then just dropping it in my library return pile saying, "Okay...this story....is........

Boring."

THAT'S WHAT I REMEMBER!! It was so boring that . . . I didn't even finish it! T_T

After I slid this book onto the return conveyor belt, I never saw it again...until...

On December 17th, I went to the library because I go every Monday, right? And I saw this book, sitting back on the shelf, still looking pretty shiny. (Maybe it's another copy of the book...)
And along with it was volume 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.
I took the books out of the shelf and started drooling. They were SOOOOOOOOOOOO PREEEEEEEETTY.
And then I asked myself...didn't I read this series before? Or at least one of the books?
So I took volume 2 because this was the lowest volume that they had. Volume 1 of every series ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE MISSING at the library!

Then I went home, and I opened this book, and I read the WHOLE THING. At the end, I asked myself..."So what's so boring about this book?"
It's not the most suspenseful thing I've ever read, but it's not bad.

My tastes for manga have strangely changed over time. Like Kamichama Karin, for example. I used to seriously FAINT over that series, or panic whenever I see a new volume on the shelf and dive for it before anyone else can even look at it.
But after rereading the whole series, I just opened my mouth like some weirdo codfish and said..."This isn't how I remember it!"

I have a few things to say about this book!

1. THE FIRST QUOTE was actually a pretty good quote.
There's something I've never understood. If a witch can take some drab girl and transform her into a beautiful princess...why doesn't she cast a spell on herself?

THAT'S A FREAKISHLY AWESOME QUOTE! And isn't that true?
I kind of thought that it was because witches usually have a price for their spells, and they only need to use it on other people to get money from them! All they need to do is find some sapped up heart and say, "Heeeeeeeeeeey, if you want something, I can make it happen. But first, you have to get me this, and this, and this!" Like how it happens in the fairytales.
In the end, the witch gets what they want, and the spell on the person will wear off anyway, so it's like they got ripped off.

But in this book, the reason why the witch doesn't use the spell on herself is because they KNOW the spell's going to wear off. There's no point in casting a spell on yourself, just for it to wear off in the end.

Besides, things like spells aren't the answer to everything. It just seems like an easy way out, and only the LAZY use spells.
But a song from The Fray says

"Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the saaaaaaaame..."

I love the Fray. (FANGIRL SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH)

2. Like I said at the beginning of this reviewy review...
THIS IS ONE CONFUSING STORY.

I see the love-triangle--sort of. There's a girl, and two guys---actually, NO. Not really, I don't see it.

Maria's one of those tough, strong heroines, but even she confuses me. Since she's still figuring herself out, we are too.
It's like she's a cold person who WISHES that she was nice, and that she could show her emotions! I know somebody like that!

He's this emotionless, bear-like person who's not good at showing how he feels. He just wears this bored looking face ALL THE TIME, and the most emotion he shows is glaring.
(It's because he has ADHD, so he has to take these pills to help him focus. Without them, he's this crazy loveable bear, but you can't really tell when you see him outside of school, so people who don't know him tend to think differently of him. I used to not know him, sooooo...)

ANYWAY, even if he's off his pills, he still has problems telling people he cares about them when he does.

If this story tends to follow that sort of relationship, that would really be cute!

I always tell that guy that I love him. ^_^

The second volume of A Devil and Her Love Song heightens the conflict that was introduced in the first volume. The teacher of Maria’s class tries to turn the class against her, and she gets more bullied which was so hard to watch. The conflict with the teacher was actually interesting, and I’m wondering where it will lead. Besides this, a choir competition is happening, and Maria should prepare the class for it, even though one half of it hates her. Of course, there’s so much high school drama but I can’t complain since it’s one of my favorite aspects of Shojo manga.

Even though the art style is a bit dated, it looks good, especially the chapter covers. What I didn’t like as much were some of the faces that look a bit grotesque, especially Maria’s. Talking about Maria, she’s such a great heroine. She doesn’t put up with anything, is direct and speaks her mind. We sadly still know nothing about her private life, and I still don’t like this concept of her “switching”. Of course, we also have some cliché mean girls here which was annoying. In comparison, I quite liked the love interests and it’s interesting to see how different they are. I probably prefer Yusuke since he’s so nice and funny.

~3-3.5/5
[Taken from my blog: http://geekyreading.blogspot.com/2012... ]

I am enjoying this series, for the most part. I think it’s still growing on me, though, as I haven’t fully warmed up to it yet.
In this volume, Maria makes a kind of friend in Tomoyo, who she was having problems with in the last volume. She’s still having problems with her classmates, in a major way. And both of the boys are making a move on her, trying to worm their way closer to her, on pretty even grounds with each other, as well. More attention was put on Yusuke in this volume than Shin, though.
I hate (or, really dislike, I’m not really sure which) her classmates, and how they’re treating her, giving her almost no chance to really explain herself or understand where she’s coming from. They do have reason to dislike her, seeing as how blunt and rude she is about everything, but they still give her no wiggle room, and are so shallow. It’s a bit annoying. And the volume ended with showing a girl coming out of the hospital and going back to school, which I’m sure means nothing good.
Maria was put on the spot several times in this volume, but took it pretty well. She’s put in charge of some choir-thing, and even though all of her classmates call it stupid and don’t want to participate, she still tries, and is still going through with it.
I actually kind of like Maria. Again, I’m not having very strong feelings for anything in this series yet, but I do like her. She’s not whiny, she’s blunt and honest, and I like how different she is from most heroines. And even though she puts out a tougher exterior, she loves frills. Also, she’s growing (or, is supposed to be), which is nice. Shin pushes her a bit, and she is kind of seeing her flaws, which is good.
Normally I would like Yusuke more, but I’m actually favoring Shin. I’m not sure why, if it’s something to do with Yusuke’s personality or not, but I like Shin more. I’m looking forward to seeing more of them both, though, and seeing where things go from here.
The art is not my favorite (still?). I’m not sure what my favorite thing about this is, or what I like much at all. It’s just… different from what I’m used to, maybe? I like how it’s written, that’s one thing. Her inner thoughts are deeper, and more thoughtful, maybe, than most are. The humor isn’t amazing, the art isn’t, the characters don’t really have strong impressions in my mind.
I don’t know. It’s all still growing on me, I guess. But I think I’m starting to enjoy it more, and I kind of want to know what happens next, but more with the characters than with the dramatic school-room plot, and I have the next one, so I should be reading it soon. We’ll see.

This manga is actually pretty good. The protagonist has a personality and the other characters are given their own personality as well. This is a very interesting romance because the two main characters are interesting, have their own personality, and actually DO have chemistry. I don't think I'm giving anything away concerning who the main couple is. It's pretty obvious who the main character's love interest is.

What I find interesting about this romance is that these characters are not your typical characters for a YA romance. Maria is a lot of fun and is just so interesting to read. She's brutally honest, sarcastic, has an attitude, witty and even though people scorn and hate her for it she really doesn't care what anybody thinks. But she also is adaptable in trying to be nice and make friends even though she looks silly doing it. I also like the tragic backstory that Maria was given. It's really sad and what's interesting is that she doesn't remember it. I know there's the drama with her friend Anna but I'm talking about her childhood. Because I read this digitally I don't know how many chapters came out in the books so I won't go into too much detail about that.

Ok, let's move on to the other characters.

Meguro is pretty interesting and is off doing his own thing. He and Kanda are friends and it's obvious that he and Maria don't get along immediately. He seems like a loner type guy and yet he can also get very shy. I don't know I'm just assuming. His backstory is also interesting because he comes from a past revolved around music like Maria.

Kanda is the other guy in the love triangle and also a lot of fun. (Yeah, I'm not giving anything away when I say this. You can't have romance without a stupid love triangle.) He is energetic, cheerful, caring, and eager to get Maria to make new friends.

The other characters are pretty cool and interesting as well except that they are the stereotypical high school girls. But anyway, Maria comes to their school and they have some hatred towards them. But as they get to know her they warm up to her and she becomes accepted into the school. You get your drama, romance, character growth (sort of), and all sorts of other stuff from a romance manga. And while it’s good there is only one problem. The villain(s). Its not that they're evil but they just seem to have this grudge against Maria. One or two people are ok and I guess that's what makes it dramatic but I don't know . . . I'd think I'd like them a lot better if they were more interesting. Give them a backstory or something. That's just a nitpick for me. Other than that, I'm with this series enough.

Look forward to the ending.

Maria is what I would call a witch, well, something that rhymes with witch. She has a real attitude problem and doesn't seem to play well with others. Her prickly demeanor, though, is just armor she girds herself with to protect herself. She really does want to make friends, but people disappoint her. She meets Yusuke Kanda and Shin Meguro, who are fellow classmates and good looking to boot. They hear her singing a song, Amazing Grace of all songs. From that moment on they find themselves helping her out of all the tight spots she gets into. Although she sings like an angel, she still seems to have the heart of a devil and the bite of a viper.

Now, the girls in class don't really like the fact that Maria has been getting friendly with Yusuke and Shin. They spread all kinds of rumors about how loose she is and why she was thrown out of her other school. They shred her old school uniform, soak her shoes, invite her to a welcome party that they purchase tons of food and drinks for try to trick her into footing the bill, one of the girls accuses Maria of bullying her and pushing her down the stairs when she actually pushed Maria and lots more fun and games. Maria just takes whatever they throw at her. She basically believes people believe what they want to believe and even if you try to tell the truth, if it isn't what they want to hear, they won't listen anyway. So, why bother.

In volume 2, Maria is volunteered by the teacher to lead a choral contest. She has to pick the music and get everyone to rehearse, but they won't cooperate, ditch practices and basically refuse to take part. Yusuke also confesses his feelings to her in front of the entire class. Will she accept his feelings and return them? Will she be able to rally the class in time for the choral competition? And what about Shin? We'll just have to wait for Vol 3 to find out.
