Richard and Reign. I should have stopped at halfway because it starts to move past the point of cheesy to ridiculous. I would have been funny if it weren't annoying at the same time. Richard and the other 'Wolves' need a human woman to help continue their species. They seem to have no qualms with the distinct possibility that the woman and baby won't survive. Richard is a centuries old alpha who talks and thinks like a girl. As soon as he sees Reign it is insta-love, of the puppy variety. Reign is 19 going on 40. The author has never had a baby, obviously. The story reads like a series of short stories strung together to create an overly-long mess. I lost count of the number of times it jumped the shark. But really, it's the lack of romance and the unnecessary amount of extreme violence that kills this story. IMHO extreme violence doesn't make the reader take the characters and story more seriously...
I couldn't make it past 31%. I tried! I don't have any issues with paranormal settings/themes, but this was just... No. I want to rake my eyes right now. Worst idea ever. I thought at first it would start out good, and it did, for maybe 5%? Then it just sort of imploded and I'm left with a bad bad idea.
Ok so when I read the title and the synopsis I totally thought this was going to be a light and fluffy read about an Alpha who needs a surrogate and ends up falling in love with said surrogate. Maybe a jealous pack female causes the danger forcing Reign to live with Richard. THIS IS NOT WHAT THE BOOK WAS ABOUT!
First, Reign as a character starts out weak! She's fragile, needs rescuing constantly, which is annoying and cries, a lot. Then she has an attempted rape, and automatically thinks something along the lines of "I don't dress like a slut, this can't be happening" and while I think people might have this sort of thought when in the moment, I felt the author's portrayal sucked, because rape can happen TO ANYONE, size, shape, size, size, whatever. It's NOT because you're a slut, or dressed like a slut, or you asked for it. So that put me off immediately and that was only like chapter 2.
Reign has dreams of becoming a musician and wants to go to college to accomplish this, so she sets out for the surrogacy so she can get the funds she needs for school.
Enter Richard, and his packmate Care, who I'm unsure if we are supposed to love or hate given how we are introduced to her, and then she ends up being pretty weak later. Anyways there is an instant attraction from Reign. blah blah blah blah. Suddenly like chapter 3 or 4 they are claiming love!????? WHAT IN THE WORLD!? WHEN? When did they have time to love each other?????? They just met?!? *confused*
Richard as an Alpha SUCKED! I expect shifter men to be.....dominating, able to make impossible choices, be a little rough around the edges. Richard cried, also a lot. Richard's age constantly changed, the story fluctuated so much it was no longer about the surrogacy. It was just a jumbled mess of 3 or 4 differing stories put together as 1.
I wanted to DNF this 2-5x I kept going because I was curious to see how it would end up. What happened and all that. Some parts WERE interesting, but it just didn't go with the premise of the story, and Reign was so happy and "in love" she figures she's probably not going to move away from Richard and have her own life, or anything nope. She was going to stay with Richard and his lurv.........I'm sorry but this story was ridiculous. SMH.
If you're looking for Light and Fluffy? Don't bother.
If you're curious about the plot go ahead, it'll confuse you and there are many inconsistencies as well.
Okay, I'm going to try to do this without spoilers.
1st point of contention was the formatting of the ebook. Between each paragraph they double spaced, even if it wasn't a break in the scene. It drove me wild.
2) I made 50% through the book. At no point did the author describe what the protagonist looked like. All we got was height.
3) the greatest issue I had with this was the fact that there was zero emotional development and the timeline was supremely unrealistic. ****SPOILER ALERT**** Reign gets inseminated and pregnant, then 2 months passes by (with seemingly no interaction between the main characters) and after a day of being in the protagonist's company she thinks she's in love. Umm..probably not
the sad thing about it is that the author does actually write well, but her execution is very poor.
3.5 Stars. While I really really enjoyed the story in itself I did not enjoy the way it was written. It almost felt like the Author has written a variety of short stories and then added them into one book. It just didn't flow.
I loved the new take on Shifters and Vamps. And the use of Magic and the Fade. We even have a Norse god make an appearance!
There were so many characters and situations to meet and go through, a few to many for my likening.
Overall I enjoyed the Story.....the writing style...not so much
I read it to the end but it was not easy. To many twist and turns and I don't think it was done well. The only thing I was looking forward to was the end and that was strange as if the author was tired and didn't wrap up all the lose ends.
The starts starts off pretty good. But somewhere along the line the author introduces just about every type of paranormal there is. Norse gods, mages and a bit of vampires. I gave up when this paranormal became tool unbelievable
While i didn't hate this one it did feel a little disjointed and could have been revised a little more so that it flowed better, and also explained some of the stuff more.
2.5 stars for this overly complicated book with everything thrown in, including the kitchen sink! The H is old shifter, packs are in messed up and shifter women are barren, ergo he needs a surrogate. It started as PNR, became urban fantasy with vampires, mages, fae magic but it was all too much. There was little to no emotional engagement or any time for it, as the pacing was all wrong. One look, she'll do, - yes, now's she pregnant, queue for many, many steamy scenes and don't worry about the bad guys who are around the corner. A good book needs a plot and characters that make sense, a reliable copy-editor and an honest, skilled beta team. Almost a DNF.
Tough crowd. I didn't hate this story nearly as much as other reviewers did. I DID dislike how the story just drops off in the last line. As a standalone book, it feels like she pulled us in and threw us off a cliff. The story had its ups and downs and use of magic etc. If you want a "better" story, read ANY book, especially the Pride, Magnus Pack and Call of the Crows series from Shelly Laurenston. The Crows series is all ABOUT Norse gods, they even go to Valhalla. I love Shelly Laurenston. Angela is no Shelly Laurenston but B+ for effort!

I appreciate the authors effort, but the format of this book was awful. It really felt like I was reading a book that a middle school student had wrote. Charters would change from one sentence to the next. There were weird breaks through out the book. I feel like this book has potential if it was re written.
At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about this book. Even now, that I finished it, I'm still debating if it's a great book or good ending. The story starts out okay, then it feels drawn out but at the end, you get the good parts. It is pretty cool
Ok brought this book since it was free. But I previously read it with my kindle unlimited subscription and it was still just was exiting as reading it for the first time. Can’t beat a book like that
This was a great story, the characters were amazing. What's a girl got to do to get enough money to go to music school?Carrying a wolf's baby is hard work, everyone seems to want the baby and won't leave us alone.Grab a copy and go on an adventure.
This book had so many twists and turns before they met their HEA. The blurb is a little misleading as it makes it sound like a quick read, but it’s actually a long read with many almost HEAs along the way. I look forward to reading the next one.
Richard is the Alpha of his pack and he is 100s of years old. The werewolf race is dying out though because of the Blight, a condition which has left all female wolves barren. In an attempt to prevent the inevitable, Richard decides to take a surrogate. It is hoped that a surrogate will produce a healthy pup so he arranges to interview prospective surrogates in Seattle.
Reign is 18 and desperately needs the money to attend music school. After finishing work late one night, she is walking to the bus stop when she chances upon a local gang whose intentions toward her are less than savoury. As they bundle her into a van, a man and woman come to her aid and take her back to their hotel with them and put her to bed. When she awakes the next morning, she rushes from the hotel after leaving a quick thank you note and rushes to her appointment which she hopes will solve all of her problems.
Fast forward 3 months and Reign has not only agreed to become a surrogate for a wealthy couple but she has been put up in a plush Seattle loft with Cara, the wealthy female for company. Whilst out shopping one day, an attempt is made to abduct Reign and she learns more about Cara. After fighting off the abduction attempt, Reign is whisked off to their mountain retreat where she slowly learns that the wealthy couple and their friends are actually a werewolf pack. She doesn't believe it at first, believing instead that they are a mad cult but when Richard changes in front of her eyes, she has no choice but to believe.
From then on in, Reign's life becomes a cat and mouse game with her very much being the mouse. As the romance between Richard and Reign develops, so does the suspense and the threats toward her and their unborn child. Reign learns about the different types of magic and that werewolves are not the only 'myths' that go bump in the night. She also learns much about herself and much happens in the year after she first met Richard and Cara.
This is the author's 2nd book and I found it very captivating and enjoyable. It wasn't always clear where the story was going and it all came right in the end. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
Look up action packed in the dictionary. It will say The Alpha's Surrogate. There is not a minute of peace in this one, well there is time for some pretty steamy moments, hours. After all we are talking about sexy wolf shifters.
However, that is just the first layer—there are so many different supernatural beings, enemies and friends, and some questionable under either title. There is pack loyalty, and pack suppression.
As the blub explains, the female shifters have become sterile. To further the pack Alpha Richard decides to hire a human surrogate. If the test works, maybe there is hope they won't die out. Enter Reign. She turns out to be so much more, and I'm not even talking about in the romance department—although Richard figures that part out right away.
Just when you think, nothing else can happen to this group of really good people (okay shifters) don't hold your breath for a downtime. And don't even think you'll be able to put this one down until you finish.
If I could give 6 starts I would. A very strong recommend from me.
I received in eARC in exchange for an honest review. This book was absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. I really liked Richard the Alpha and Reign the surrogate.
Richard is a strong dominant alpha who is looking to find a way to save his people. There have been no new birth in a very long time due to the blight. He helps my brain in a surrogate that she can give birth to a werewolf cub.
Reign is a young woman looking to earn money to go to college so she agrees to become the Alphas surrogate.
There are several groups totally against this happening and are willing to do anything to prevent the birth of a new cub. Even if it means killing every werewolf and Richards pack.
The action in this book never stops from the beginning all the way through to the end. This book has absolutely everything for a fantastic novel romance, evil villians (more than one) ,humor, sadness and last but not least and HEA, but a very hard earned one.
I highly recommend this book in this author to everyone I know you'll enjoy it as much as I did. Be sure to pick up a copy you'll be very very glad that you did.
While I somewhat enjoyed the story for the most part, it was very disjointed and it seemed the author felt like if one antagonist was good, 4 or 5 was even better. It was hard to keep all the paranormal enemies straight. I had to force myself to keep reading. It just all got way too unbelievable. Editing was ok though on my kindle app for iPad there were no differentiation when a scene changed completely and that lead to confusion. One minute the author is writing about one character and in the next paragraph a completely new character and setting. Starting new paragraphs or somehow distinguishing a change occurred would be helpful. At the back of the book, the author wrote that this was her second book. I hope she continues to write and hone her craft but I'll probably pass on her other books, at least right now.
I absolutely loved this book. It is very well written and the author has added so much to the story that the title doesn’t do it justice. Richard has lost many of his pack members because of fighting and, more importantly, the blight which has rendered the females infertile. Fate brings into his life Reign, but she is a human, and there are those who do not want her to live. A strong pack bond helps in times of trouble and Reign’s exceptional strong will, determination and spirit for the man she loves knows no bounds. The author has put together an extremely fascinating and thrilling story, not only of love, but of magic and the ways of the Fade. If you are interested in reading shifter books, this is one that should not be missed. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was given a complimentary copy by author Angela Foxxe for an honest review.
Richard Dallas is an alpha of his pack and does what he can to over see the pack. With the females in the pack not being able to have babies it is up to Richard to find a way to accomplish it. Reign is hired to become a surrogate for Richard but when outside interest find out about Reign Richard will do anything to protect her.
The author gave the characters very good interaction with each others. I did find a couple rocky areas in the story line flow but it did not take away from the story.
This book is for mature paranormal book reader dues to sexual content and adult language.
This is a great read. It looks like a stand alone. But it could become a series. Reign is one of the best female saviours I have ever read and really liked everything about her. Usually they are boring, mean, they don't understand what's going on. Well she's like me a quick study. You learn as you go and once you figure it out you use it asap! Awesome read
Angela Foxxe is a new author for me, and the book looked unique and interesting! It most certainly was & I did enjoy it. The book took off in many directions - Wolves, Vamp's, Norse Gods, "the Fade" - and she managed to pull it all together! It was an interesting take on the wolves - their wolf political conflicts- how they over come crazy odds... a fun ride.. I will be looking for other work by this author!!
Hopefully more additional books are coming to this series!! WONDERFUL DRAMA!
This is the second book of her wonderful series and doesn't disappoint!! Exceptional reading experience with characters that Are completely engaging and wonderfully portrayed with something for every taste. Steamy scenes yet definitely LOVE conquerors tragedies of their fight to survive and thrive.I'm absolutely recommending you have this in your own personal library!!
This was a good idea, but I felt too rushed. It didn't flow. I wanted to love this, because it's paranormal, but I couldn't. Sadly, I didn't finish this book. I got to 68% and stopped. There were to many ideas floating around to make sense of.
I like the idea of the female wolves being barren and the males needed to go out and seek out a human. What I didn't like, was jumping the shark and making the surrogate a witch. That's where I put the book down and walked away.
I agree with most of the other reviews. It starts off ok, but then the story is constantly going off course, adding in every supernatural being and ends so far from the original story. Yes something happy happens in the end, but your still left with a main character stuck as a wolf with nothing resolved in their relationship. It was ok. Just not where I saw the story going. Would I recommend it? Nah...
