Counterintuitive - What 4 million teenagers wish we knew.:

Rate this book
Tyler Durman has spoken live to over 4 million teenagers. Following each presentation, where he offers guidance through comedic storytelling, students approach him to confide and confess things they’ve never told their parents, teachers, or even best friends. Thousands of these one on one conversations have given Tyler a rare window into their lives, allowing him to gain wisdom about the surprising and counterintuitive things they need and long for from the adults in their lives. If you want to experience joy and intimacy in your relationship with your child or students, the observations and tools in these pages will give you a way forward. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or at a loss, they’ll provide hope. As a former teacher and father of five, Tyler writes with a voice that’s fresh, raw, and just pure fun. He’s found a way to relay profound wisdom while being intensely funny at the same time. “Powerful. Refreshing. Hilarious. I literally couldn’t put it down! The scope and candor of this book cut to the realities of parenting and teaching while offering hope through practical solutions… a pure joy to read.” Dr. Paul Lewanski, Ed.D., California Teacher of the Year

My aunt, a middle school teacher, gave me this book when my stepson and I were butting heads. I came to her for some guidance because she was dealing with pre-teen/ teens on a regular basis and I wasn’t sure what side was up with him. It helped me reset my mind when it comes to the teenage brain. 4 years later as I’m facing similar challenges with his younger sister, I am reading it again. I am reading it from a different perspective and getting so much more out of it than I would have imagined. If your at wits end with your teenager… this is the book to read, as long as you have an open heart, you will find refuge in this book. I also appreciate the authors vulnerability and telling of his story and struggles. It allows the reader to really feel the feels too!

This book is NOT just for teachers! It is perfect for anyone who interacts with teens. Tyler compiles all his experiences speaking to teens (and often their parents) to help us understand how to reach and impact kids. It's the type of book that I couldn't read in one sitting. Each chapter has a different lesson and often I would finish and have to walk away and reflect. Once I read a chapter to a class I had (there was just something about that story that connected at that moment so I had to share with them) and they loved it. They have asked me to read several more. Totally worth reading!

I purchased a signed copy of this book from the author, Tyler Durman, after hearing him discuss his successful interactions with teams, teachers and parents. Anyone that is a teen, teacher or parent will find this book very helpful. Mr. Durman provides several insights into the mind and psyche of the teen brain. I call Mr. Durman the teen whisperer based on the success of his stories and positive outcomes for teens in need of direction. His book Counterintuitive contains vignettes of interactions with teens that need help navigating an unknown world. I immediately utilized the suggestions offered in this book. Counterintuitive is a quick and enlightening read. As an added bonus, Mr. Durman provides many comedic opportunities throughout the book to help soften the mood of sometimes difficult stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares for the positive outcome of teens that need direction, parents that are at their wits ends and teachers who are the gatekeepers for so many teens.
