A Fractured Balance #3

A Light Between

Rate this book
The gods failed once. The Veydran remember.

The Stillight is gone. The prison is broken. Forty thousand corrupted march on a valley where twenty-five thousand defenders stand as the last line between survival and annihilation.

Theron carries a divine power he was never meant to wield. If he can master it, he might end the Veydran forever. But mastery will take months. The enemy will arrive in days.

Nyra leads her warriors against impossible odds while the front lines crumble. Caulin hunts something that has been hunting him since the beginning. Allies fall. Corruption spreads. And every hour Theron needs is paid for in blood.

But the true cost of victory is something none of them saw coming.

Because this was never a story about whether the world could be saved. It is a story about what saving it demands, and how much one person can give before there is nothing left.

Not everyone will survive what comes next. Some will give more than their lives.

Dark, relentless, and emotionally devastating, A Light Between is the explosive conclusion to the Fractured Balance trilogy. An epic fantasy of cosmic horror, impossible sacrifice, and the terrible weight of becoming what the world needs rather than what you love.

Perfect for fans of Brandon Sanderson and Joe Abercrombie, and for readers who want dark epic fantasy with high-stakes battles and permanent consequences for every choice.

Where do I begin. This was this epic ending to the trilogy.

We find our past gods have returned and are now mortals and Theron has received all the godly powers. What will comes next is written in this book.

I highly recommend you read all three books and finish with this on to find out what happens. You'll be quite surprised by how it all comes together. I know I was.

Thank you A.M. Woodbury for an amazing trilogy and the first ever dark epic fantasy genre read for me.

A Light Between is the final book in A Fractured Balance series. Everything is on the line in this book, and no one is safe. The tension and drama never let up!

The Veydran use the Corrupted as their army, spreading their influence as they seek to take over the world and claim the Stilllight. The Corrupted are numerous, and it felt like it was so easy to become corrupted. I’m not going to lie, I totally feel like I would have become corrupted!

My favorite part of this book was the Hunter. He was so creepy and malicious. I loved his eerie laughing and the way he stalked from the shadows. He definitely wasn’t someone to play with, but it did feel like he enjoyed himself. His stalking and freaking out Caulin was everything!

I was so torn over Theron. He has so much power that I just wanted him to annihilate the Corrupted. However, I understand his choices. This series is unique because the deities aren’t like how you typically perceive a god. They don’t have the omni attributes (omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence) that you might think of when you think of God. This makes the story more interesting because the solution isn’t a given.

I enjoyed how this series concluded! The last 25% was straight fire! It was one trial or dilemma after another, and it definitely kept my attention!

It’s this one! Don’t sleep on this series 👏🏼👏🏼.

This was a perfect ending to this amazing trilogy! Grab tissues, because you will need them. We pick up where book 2 left off and all of the gods who were gods find themselves just like everyone else. The stakes are higher. In order to defeat the corrupted and calm the ley lines, sacrifices must be made. They have to make the tough decisions. While in the mist of fighting, one of my favorite characters Rook, is always there with the comedic relief. There were more quotes I wanted to add of him but did not want to give anything away so you will have to read it for yourself. This one will have your heart breaking at moments but it is needed. And our dreaded hunter makes another appearance...and he is just as terrifying in this book as he was in book 2! This epic fantasy deals with war, grief, peace, betrayal, love, and so much more! You will not be disappointed.

Thank you A. M. Woodbury for reaching out all those months ago and asking if I could read your book A Shroud Undone. Fast forward to now, and I am so glad you did! This series is one I will be recommending and gifting to friends and family.

This series is incredible. The twists and turns, the betrayals and sacrifices, the joy and the terror! I think I’ve been through every emotion known to man while reading this trilogy.

This final book was INTENSE and full of battles, exhaustion, and sacrifice. The journeys and preparations for the final stand, along with the way everyone came together was masterfully done. The sacrifices made by some of the most beloved characters was absolutely devastating but also satisfying and gave closure to even the least known characters.

The book starts off with an intense prologue, giving us more insight into Theron and the other gods origins. It was brutal and showed that they aren’t these infallible beings, but normal people given power who would learn and make mistakes.

The scenes with The Hunter quickly became a favorite for me, even if they were traumatic and terrifying. What a ride! What an end to this trilogy!

When I read A Shroud Undone (book one) I knew this was something special, and it only got better and better. Truly excellent series! I feel so lucky to have been given an opportunity to read these before they were published and will be a Woodbury fan for life!

There is a cost. Always. And the debt has come due.

A Light Between is an absolutely brutal finale to A.M. Woodbury's A Fractured Balance series.

This book is packed with massive battles, political maneuvering, betrayals, lost family, and an overwhelming sense that nobody is safe. The gods are scrambling to build armies through the leaders of the land, the Corrupted are growing stronger, and old enemies are forced to stand together if they want any chance of surviving.

Haethan is such a terrifying villain because he's completely unpredictable. His corruption spreads through fear, grief, loneliness, and lost faith. In a world where the gods no longer have the power to save everyone, that's a dangerous combination. It can be an empty feeling when everything you've believed in starts to crumble around you.

I'll be honest, around the halfway point I was a little worried. The constant battles and military strategy started to feel repetitive. Stay patient. By the end, I realized that was kind of the point. You're supposed to feel the same frustration, exhaustion, and hopelessness that Theron and the others are feeling. He’s already lost, but failing a second time isn’t an option. It made the payoff hit that much harder.

Where Woodbury really excelled was the constant tension felt while reading. I had a pit in my stomach for most of this book. While the battle scenes were written well, it’s his proficiency to write the quite scenes that display his talent as an author. His ability to convey grief and emotion through his characters are some of the best in the game.

Underneath all the epic fantasy action, this felt like a story about human connection. About how easy it is to become overwhelmed and isolated, and how pain and grief can leave us vulnerable to the darkness. The corruption is getting smarter, but the answer isn't some powerful weapon or magical solution.

It's people.

It's holding the line together.

It's being someone's light in the darkness when they need it most.

As the world falls apart around them, Theron and the rest of the cast must decide whether they'll give in to the darkness or keep fighting. Can Theron become the anchor everyone needs and find the balance between order and chaos? Will any of the sacrifices be worth the cost?

A fitting, emotional, and incredibly tense ending to a series I've really enjoyed.

Hold the line, friends.

A Light Between by A.M. Woodbury was definitely an amazing conclusion to the A Fractured Balance trilogy! I have really enjoyed this series, but this final book had me completely hooked. I actually stayed up all night reading because I just had to know how everything was going to end!

Theron has so much resting on his shoulders as he tries to understand the divine power within him. With the threat of the Veydran growing stronger, he has some difficult decisions to make, and I really enjoyed seeing how much his character has changed throughout the series.

Nyra was another character I absolutely loved following. She's determined to protect her people, even when the odds seem impossible. Then there's Caulin, who has his own challenges to overcome. I really liked how each character had their own important role and how their different journeys added so much to the story.

One of my favorite things about this trilogy has been the world-building. The author created such an interesting world filled with powerful gods, dangerous enemies, corruption, and magic. In this final book, everything feels even more intense because there is so much at stake.

What really got me was the emotional side of the story! Between the friendships, loyalty, sacrifices, and difficult choices, there were moments that had me feeling absolutely everything. I loved that the characters weren't perfect and that their decisions came with real consequences.

There were so many moments when I thought I knew what was going to happen, only for the story to take another turn. The battles were intense, the tension kept building, and I really enjoyed seeing how the different storylines came together.

I always have mixed feelings when finishing a series I've really enjoyed because I'm excited to see how everything ends, but I'm also sad to say goodbye to the characters. This was definitely one of those times!

If you enjoy dark epic fantasy with amazing world-building, powerful magic, complicated characters, intense battles, and plenty of emotional moments, I would absolutely recommend the A Fractured Balance trilogy!

Definitely start with A Shroud Undone because this is a journey you need to experience from the beginning!

ARC REVIEW

A Light Between is a great ending to the A Fractured Balance trilogy.
The perfect bleed out spot.

It is a love letter to the readers. Full of emotional evisceration, dark brutality, and bone deep sorrow that will devastate and utterly gut you.
The grief and anguish are completely consuming. The bleak circumstances, the overwhelming odds, the dread and fear breathing down every character’s neck sets the pages aflame and you won’t be able to put it down until you finish.
But when you survive, that small kernel of hope you held onto is undeniable, and it will blind you with its radiance.

You know these characters, you’ve cried with them and laughed with them. Watched them grow and suffer. Now you see how they’ll fight, not just for themselves and their loved ones, but for their entire world. You’ll see how they’ll hold on when there’s nothing left.
The comradery and friendship hold them together, strengthening their resolve until there is only one choice left.
Choose the light, hold the line.

Woodbury’s signature writing style is one of my favorite parts of this book. The care he takes in showing you everything that lives in the dark is deeply atmospheric and tugs at your heart. The descriptions burrow into your mind with such warmth that you can’t help but get lost in the story.

To say I loved this book, this series, would be an understatement. For a debut series, A Fractured Balance is phenomenal.

This is the third book in the series and I am finally attached to some of the characters. That unfortunately means all three books are just a part 1 to part 3 and in no way can stand on there own. Some may like this fact but to me that means the pacing is too extended and draws out too much. With that and the length of each book already being very long, it was less enjoyable than many others. It is well written, and it has beautiful and creative world building. It is also too long. The full climax of the series is dead center of book 3 and when I got there, I was confused on how I was only half way through the book. It made me feel like this was going to drag on and on, instead of being an enjoyable story. I will say on that feeling I was thankfully mistaken. While it did drag on, because I was finally attached to some of the characters, it was more impactful and more meaningful than I had expected. It it's not common for a book to make me cry but this one did successfully draw a tear or two. That fact is the only reason that this received a four star instead of a three star review. Again, it is a very well written series, but unless you can dedicate yourself to three long books, you probably won't enjoy this series.

Trilogies are a tricky thing. We all know trilogies in a variety of mediums that feel like they just recycled the same idea over and over without any real development and lacking and satisfying conclusion. A.M. Woodbury's A Fractured Balance trilogy does not suffer from that issue. A Shroud Undone introduced us to a dark and damaged world where one 'man' carried the weight of regret on his shoulders from a decision made centuries ago. A Shadow Watching continued that story by bringing our favorites together in the hope that the world could still be saved. In A Light Between, we were shown that the decision to fight for good comes with serious consequences, that being 'good' isn't always enough and that anyone can be a hero. A Light Between is a truly epic ending to a truly epic adventure. Mr. Woodbury has remained true to the principles of realistic fantasy through the first two novels and continues that in A Light Between. It's a dark, gritty, edge of your seat conclusion with twists, turns, and mystery. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be in awe of what Mr Woodbury created in his epic novel, A Light Between.

Theron’s people and the humans had to work together to take down the corrupted, even though the humans hated Theron’s kind for so long. Theron was a God and had the light and dark within him, which held the power of becoming thr Stillight. There was a cost at sacrificing himself. I really enjoyed this series. It all came together really well. I felt for Theron having to live alone in the beginning of the series because he lost his love ones, and then saving them in the end. Here’s one of my favorite quotes from the book - “He did more than succeed,” Rook said, voice breaking. “He became the greatest protector reality has ever known. He saved everything. Everyone. Every world that exists or will exist is safe because of what he chose to become.”Thank you to The Space Network for a gifted e-ARC!!

Sitting here staring at the wall processing.... A.M Woodbury owes me for my next therapy bill. The loses throughout the betrayals, the sacrifice. If you loved LotR this series is for you but don't look for a HEA.. its not that kind of book its the kind when you think on it later left you satisfied with its overall telling proud of the journey and a small ache in your heart. WELL WRITTEN Great job A.M. I'll let you know where to send that check....

Thank you to the author and SPACE for this advanced review copy.

Oh my gosh, this was such a fantastic ending to the trilogy. When I say fantastic, I absolutely do not mean happy sunshine and rainbows. There’s a lot of emotion in this one, you’ll want your tissues, a blanket, maybe a stuffy for comfort. It’s good though, and felt like a satisfying end to the trilogy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well. Apparently this book woke up and chose emotional violence.

A Light Between was one hell of a way to finish the trilogy. The stakes were higher, the pace picked up, and at some point I realized I should probably stop getting attached to people—but clearly I learned absolutely nothing from the first two books.

There’s action, heartbreak, sacrifice, hope, and enough emotional damage to have me staring at my Kindle like, “Surely we’re done hurting me now?” Spoiler alert: we were not.

Was the final battle a little long in places? Yes. Did I still need to know how the hell everything was going to end? Also yes. And while I’m still side-eyeing one particular storyline that left me needing ANSWERS, the ending brought the themes of balance, identity, and free will together in a way that felt earned.

Overall, this trilogy was such a pleasant surprise. The best way I can describe it is more exciting than SJM, but not quite as relentlessly fast-paced as Rebecca Yarros. Plenty of action, characters worth caring about, and just enough emotional destruction to keep me invested.

Four stars—and emotional compensation may still be required.

A brilliant end to a fitting trilogy. As always with this series, A Light Between doesn’t shy away from the grim realities of a world at war and the sacrifices involved, and the author does a brilliant job of bringing emotion to the forefront of the story. While the world building is excellent and the action scenes written in a fast paced and gripping way, it’s Woodbury’s character work that really stands out. There’s a wide cast of characters, but each are allowed to develop their own distinct arcs and perspectives that are highlighted brilliantly, and I’m not ashamed to say o shed a few tears with the ending of some of those character arcs!

I burned through this whole series, and it was worth every second. It builds to an intense climax, resolves key character arcs, and finishes on a perfectly bittersweet note. Refreshing, original, and tightly plotted with zero shortcuts in concept or execution—a fantastic conclusion to a great series.

3rd and final segment to the trilogy.

What a conclusion to this epic fantasy. All the gods of book 1 and 2 find themselves like everyone else and no longer god's.

I completely recommend this series!!
