Was stunned at my good fortune when I won this in a goodreads giveaway. This is an absolutely gorgeous book. Not a whole lot going on text-wise: forewords by Tony Bennett and Steve Wynn, afterwords by his kids, and a brief introductory essay to each career period. But the photos. Hundreds of photos, all looking amazing and sporting informative captions, that walk you through Sinatra's entire career. It's a stunningly beautiful book. If you like Sinatra, this would be a fine addition to your coffee table.
There is very little text, and numerous pictures, which is great. I finished it rather quickly but it was great. I loved the amount of history and show of character in it.
Not much to say about this book - it's pretty straightforward. A beautiful photo album about an extraordinary man. A lot of iconic and rare photos that give a glimpse of his long and storied life with just a few short biographical stories sprinkled in. The book was published to celebrate Sinatra's centennial... Its been over a hundred years since Frank's birth and his memory still holds strong today.
What better way to mark the centennial of an icon’s birth than this lush richly detailed volume created with the wholehearted participation of Frank Sinatra’s three children, his friends and colleagues? For many of us it seems only yesterday that a singer shortly to be known as The Voice captured the hearts of millions of teenagers who never dreamed that he was an entertainer of such amazing talent that he would become an Academy Award winning actor and one of the best selling recording artists of all time. But he did this and more, and he did it in spades.
Sinatra 100 details all of this beginning with the bobby-soxer riots in the 1940s to his estimable recording and film career to the Rat Pack and days (nights) in Las Vegas. Holding never before seen photos plus ones we well remember and memorabilia much of which as never been published. There are over 400 illustrations both in color and black and white. The intriguing text is based on personal interviews and conversations with Sinatra himself as well as with family and friends. In addition you’ll find not to be missed forewords by Tony Bennett and Steve Wynn.
The book itself is large, coffee table size (approx. 11" by 14"), but how else to try to capture such an iconic figure? Numerous exhibitions, symposiums, film screening, recordings and concerts are planned in cities throughout the world to mark the centennial of Sinatra’s birth - Sinatra 100 is a book you can keep to remember and enjoy for years to come.
This book is weight heavy. It is difficult to hold while reading in bed. The book's forwards are by Tony Bennett and Steve Wynn. Both of these forwards are informal and personal. The book's afterwards are by Frank's three children; Nancy, Frank Jr., and Tina. Nancy's is the most personal, Frank Jr's seems to me to be ghost written (probably not) and Tina's seems less intimate than Nancy's.
The book is organized into three sections; 1915-1952 (the Voice), 1953-1972 (Chairman of the Board) and 1973-1998 (Old Blue Eyes). Each section has a three to four page summary of the years regarding Frank's professional and personal life. Frank's many benefit concerts for charities and hospitals are often mentions accompanied with photos of the events. His concerts to U.S. Service members both home and abroad are highlighted. His gracious anonymous giving is discussed.
The book's photos are impressive because of the large format but the written content was disappointing. There was nothing new written about his life and I was surprised that the Cal-Neva (night club on the California/Nevada boarder) wasn't discussed or that there weren't more photos from his TV show.
If a person wants to know more about Frank Sinatra, I would recommend Nancy Sinatra's book, Frank Sinatra: An American Legend. I have that book and it comes with a CD. Its more of a day-today diary presentation of Frank's career with photos.
This is an amazing collection of photographs, some rarely seen and some probably never seen outside of the Sinatra family. With all of the different settings you really get a glimpse of Ol’ Blue Eye’s life, from his early days in New York to his beginnings in the music business, (and everybody in the recording studio in suits,) to his movie career and his work with the Summit, as he preferred to call it, and to his later days as an American icon. This hefty tome is a definite must have for any fan of Frank.
I honor of what would have been Frank Sinatra,s 100 birthday the three children Have written this book. They give an intimate portrait of their father. They have included 100 (awesome) never seen before photographs and memorabilia. This is the book for any fan of his.
Terrific book looking back at Frank Sinatra's life. NOT a Biography perse. Great pictures, beautiful forwards by Tony Bennett and Steve Wynn, along with writings from Nancy, Frank Jr, and Tina. A must for any Sinatra fan. A beautiful table-top book.
