I don't say this often but this book actually got under my skin. There's a coldness to the writing that made me uneasy in the best possible way, like I could feel something was wrong long before I could explain why. I found myself rereading a couple of pages just to sit with the discomfort a little longer instead of rushing past it.
What got me most is how much restraint there is. Nothing is spelled out, nothing is over-explained, you're just given these small quiet details and left to feel the weight of them yourself. I put the book down a few times just to process what I'd read, which almost never happens to me.
On top of that, this is genuinely one of the most polished self-published thrillers I've read in a while. Formatting was flawless on my Kindle, not a single hiccup, and the cover is stunning, moody and minimal in a way that matches the tone perfectly. You can tell real time and money went into making this feel like a proper, professional release.
I already preordered the next book the second I finished this one. Cannot wait to see where the series goes.
