Life is complicated, and sometimes we feel stuck or adrift. But God has been at work in your life, and he's still working in you. God is calling men to a deeper life of faith, surrender and commitment. You can learn to recognize where he's leading you and what he's calling you to become.
Leadership coach Daniel Allen knows what it's like to be summoned by God. He shares how he heard God's wake-up call on his life and what it takes to find a life of fulfillment, passion and purpose. This honest guide gives practical, real-life advice for shaping a godly view of manhood, building character and growing in spiritual practices and leadership. From his own experience, Allen addresses common pitfalls that trip men up and shows how you can thrive in your faith, vocation and relationships. Including a four-session study guide for men, this book shows how God is shaping you into a leader, and that he is sending you out to serve others around you.
There's more to this life. Step up and answer the call to deeper discipleship.
This book is very good for young to thirties men. It holds a very strong combination of life sharing and wisdom for work, meaning and family. I think its the combination of things that make it very unique for "men's book". Part Two, for example, is on Integrity and Influence and includes topics such as:
Meaning - start where you are Porn - no more hiding and pretending Relationships - do the hard work Baggage - Get help, but deal with your stuff etc
I think the only thing I felt a few times (but not very often) was that the book was written with college students in mind ... perhaps this displays my own jaded view of life and our place in the world, but I rarely think about "changing the world" or doing anything like overcoming human trafficking, etc. These are things that would speak to someone in college ... for me I am merely trying to survive my big family, while paying the bills. Don't get me wrong, I love reading about the world and its problems, I feel my heart pricked when I read about the plight of the poor and the inequality in America today, but I feel its all so far beyond me that the best I can do is try and love my kids and my wife and grow as a person. I am an accountant and my company helps people with their ERP software and whatever meaningful work I can do is left to the one or two hours I have to myself in the dark mornings before anyone wakes up ... and I usually spend that reading. (OK, but this review is not about me!) Read on ...
And then there is sections that are helpful for leadership, whether in a church role or in a business role. And there is learning on prayer reaching out to God. Perhaps my favorite chapter was the one called "Teaming Up" about working with and/or being married to women. In a handful of pages, he blew up so many myths related to women in the scriptures and established a much needed understanding of how to work and live together. He does it all in Daniel style ... in a section headed "Flipping Culture the Bird" he says:
What if we stood up and refused to accept culture's view of women? What if we worked with--and for--women instead of against them, over them or around them? What if we elevated the status of women out of a Genesis 1 view of their dignity and Acts 2 view of their place in the advancement of the purposes of God? What if we cared about them like Jesus did?
Reading this book has deepened more in my transformation with God and has made me a better follower of Jesus Christ in the way that I live and lead with him!
This book is written for young men in or having recently finished college, but this doesn't mean I didn't get something from it also as a middle aged man. It's filled with a number of helpful themes about taking seriously God's calling in your life as well as the things we let get in the way. Great stuff on leadership, working alongside women, mentoring, etc. Very easy to read and discuss. Strongly recommended for discipleship of college aged men written to them instead of a teacher for a change.
