About the author

Novelist, short-story writer, essayist, critic, journalist, and film dramatist Christa Wolf was a citizen of East Germany and a committed socialist, and managed to keep a critical distance from the communist regime. Her best-known novels included “Der geteilte Himmel” (“Divided Heaven,” 1963), addressing the divisions of Germany, and “Kassandra” (“Cassandra,” 1983), which depicted the Trojan War.

She won awards in East Germany and West Germany for her work, including the Thomas Mann Prize in 2010. The jury praised her life’s work for “critically questioning the hopes and errors of her time, and portraying them with deep moral seriousness and narrative power.”

Christa Ihlenfeld was born March 18, 1929, in Landsberg an der Warthe, a part of Germany that is now in Poland. She moved to East Germany in 1945 and joined the Socialist Unity Party in 1949. She studied German literature in Jena and Leipzig and became a publisher and editor.

In 1951, she married Gerhard Wolf, an essayist. They had two children. Christa Wolf died in December 2011.

Dopo la riunificazione della Germania, Christa Wolf trascorre molto tempo a Los Angeles.
Da un mondo così lontano, guarda indietro, guarda la vita che ha vissuto nella Germania dell'Est fino alla caduta del Muro con occhi nuovi e diversi, assimilando con tutti i suoi sensi il nuovo ambiente: le persone i paesaggi la vita in California - la città in cui Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Mann e altri hanno conosciuto l’esilio.
Partendo dalle sue esperienze personali, dalla malattia, dal dolore, dalla convivenza, dal matrimonio, arriva all'universalità dell'esperienza umana.
Tre stelle: la prosa di Christa Wolf è un percorso articolato tutt’altro che semplice

Der letzte Text ist etwas schwächer (vielleicht auch im Nachhinein, nachdem so viel passiert ist - aber auch nicht genug für mehr Abstand), der Rest aber ... Der Rest ist genial. Vor allem die beiden Texte, in denen es um Gerhard Wolf geht sind unglaublich: solch wunderbare, tiefe, persönliche Einblicke.

Und dann noch das: „Nun ist ja Schreiben ein Sich-Herantasten an jene Grenzlinie, die das innerste Geheimnis um sich zieht und die zu verletzen Selbstzerstörung bedeuten würde, und es ist der Versuch, die Grenzlinie nur dem wirklichen innersten Geheimnis zuzuerkennen, und die diesen Kern umgebenden, teils mit ihm zusammenhängenden anderen ,Geheimnisse‘, die oft nur Peinlichkeiten, schwer einzugestehende Verfehlungen sind, nach und nach von dem Verdikt des Unaussprechlichen zu befreien, also nicht Selbstzerstörung, sondern Selbsterlösung zu betreiben.“

The first batch were very associative and stream-of-consciousness, the stories in america were really... i don't know, it was nice to see the way she reacted to such things, the stories about her husband were very telling and the last one was just very much how early 2000's were, I guess. A little testament.
