Ohhhh man.

Harry Plotter?

Chamber of Serpents?

This could either be the best thing ever or the worst abomination ever to grace the publishing world.

Update:

It was very meh. So disappointing. Not worth writing a review, to be honest.

Utterly charmless. A fanfic that purports to be more, to be a parody.

I have an affection for fanfics, there are some imaginative writers that take the familiar to original depths, they can fully engage your emotions and develop things past the limits of their cannon to create a taunt read, some are endearing or simply amuse.

The concept of offering a fresh pov at Hogwarts is an interesting one and could make for a fascinating fanfic. It had potential. But there's nothing original or clever about repeating another's descriptions with slightly altered names, it's not offering anything new. A self-claimed parody it doesn't imitate Rowling's style or invite humour over absurdities.

A modern American perspective transplanted into the timeless magic of Hogwarts feels abrasive. It feels scornful of well-loved things, sneering where gentle humour would have drawn out the same conclusions but let the reader share the joke. Perhaps it's more for American audiences, I could nary appreciate the humour.

More than anything this reads to me like the work of a cynical adult forced to repeatedly watch the film by a child until they've rebelled with this.

While it claims all proceeds go to charity, it's free on amazon which gives it the appearance of a publicity stunt.

An American finds himself going to Hogwarts despite the fact that he knows nothing of the Wizarding World. To make matters worse, he should be a second year student so he is already a year behind. Finally, he gets sorted into the house that all the rest hate. Set during Harry's second year at Hogwarts there is a monster on the loose that our poor hero (Austin not Harry) just might have set loose. Hermione is thankfully tutoring Austin and he even manages to make friends with a few of his housemates.

This is labeled a parody, but is more of an alternate story truthfully. For me, this is a good thing because I find most parodies not that funny really. This story is told from Austin's point of view so some things seemed skewed from the tale with which we are familiar. Some names have been changed (to prevent lawsuits) but for the most part it dovetails nicely with the second Harry Potter book. ( It reminds me of the Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode that was made to go along with the original Star Trek episode, Trouble With Tribbles.) It reads like a behind the scenes story at times and actually clears up a few things, especially in regards with Dumbledore.

I think Harry Potter fans will enjoy this tale. It is nice to side with the "bad" house for a change, especially with Drano (Draco) still a prat.

This morning, I spied a copy of this book for free on Smashwords and figured that I would give it a go since I used to enjoy the Harry Potter books very much. "Harry Plotter and The Chamber of Serpents", also known as "An American Muggle in Slytherin House" is by by MJ Ware. It follows the same period in time that "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" by JK Rowling does and parodies the Harry Potter series in general. The main character, Austin Winters, has recently moved to Britain and he has received a letter requesting his attendance to Hogwarts. He knows nothing about this school, but has an amusing eagerness to the potential education that this school of magic can provide. Soon enough, he takes the train to the school and find out that it's not what he expected. He hears stories of the other people in the school, many about the legendary Harry Plotter who has defeated He Who Must Not Be Named. Sorted into Slipperen, Austin finds that people loathe him becausde he was muddle born and knows nothing of the world of magic. The Chamber of Serpents has been opened and something is happening other students. Austin, though knowing nothing about this magical world, does his best to fit in and make friends.

I enjoyed the new perspective that this book has provide to the Harry Potter series. Seeing it from Austin's view made it somewhat amusing and he had some very fair points about basic things and the events within the magical world. I also enjoyed that it follows the Chamber of Secrets book. Not just because it was an amusing continuation to the book, but also because it gave us a perspective into the lives of other students. Just looking at it from Austin's comments, it was interesting to see what jerks Harry, Hermione and Ron (plus other main characters) appear like to the other students. I can see that a lot of these times definitely seem unfair to the rest of the school, not to mention that MJ Ware has made some interesting comments about lackluster safety standards within the school. Overall, the characters were pretty interesting. Though the majority are just people from the original books, they have some unique differences, backstories and seeing them close up gives us a special kind of attention to the background people. I liked Miles most of all; I liked that he seemed kind of awkward and out of place, but also his personality. I liked how much of Austin's experiences about the school were basic lack of knowledge (about the magic and world) and he is definitely a unique character.

Overall, I really did appreciate the new perspective that this book provided and felt that all the characters were somewhat special. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If the author continued the series, I would really appreciate a read of it!

This book was HILARIOUS. I laughed from beginning to end. As a huge Harry Potter fan, I am always scared of reading something that may not be as great as JK Rowlings books. This one is just perfect. I think that Harry would approve.

[I received a copy of this book through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.]

A somewhat funny idea, although in the end it didn't go far enough to be more than quaint fanfiction. The story is basically that of the second Harry Potter book, from the point of view of an American pupil thrown into Hogwarts. It was mildly interesting, in that it inserted a different take on why some events got to unfold the way they did in the original novel (the cat hair ending up in the potion, for instance), as well as peeked into what may have been the daily life of other students than the ones we saw throughout Rowling's series.

However, this should have been taken further, and to greater lengths, I think, in order to become a story of its own. As it was, it didn't bring much to the Potterverse, because the "blanks" it filled weren't many, and so it was mostly a retelling from a different perspective, rather than something really interesting. Austin being American didn't play much of a part either; he could have been German or French, and it would've been roughly the same. The reason why he ended up in second year when he hadn't attended the first wasn't really explained either: "so that he'd be on the level with the Harry, Hermione and Draco of the official timeline" and "because he wasn't in England before" are a bit of an easy cop-out.

Some aspects were tentatively explored (a Slytherin/Slipperen being friends with a Gryffindor/Gryffinbore, opening up to other people, all Slytherins aren't uptight worshippers of pure blooded ancestry...), only not enough. It felt like an attempt to redeem this House by downplaying the others (Harry seen negatively...), in a "Slytherins are misunderstood" way, instead of delving further into what could've been complex House relationships. This is reflected in general in how the novel remained too close to the original one, and never soared away from it to become its own.

Also, seeing the names changed (Harry Plotter, Hogworts...) was strange: everything's so close to the original that it doesn't fool anybody. No doubt a matter of copyright, yet it made me wonder where Rowling stood regarding all of this. Did she allow it, and if yes, then why not a joint effort of sorts, using the real names and places? And if not allowed... then what? (Yes, you can tell I'm always torn when it comes to fanfiction. That said, the book’s free on some platforms, which I can appreciate—not sure about places where it's sold, as even profits going to a charity feels... somewhat shameful. Unless Rowling agreed to that?)

Fun enough if you want something light to read and on which you don't want to focus a lot. Otherwise nothing exceptional.

This eBook was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

It is obvious from the title that M. J. Ware’s Harry Plotter and the Chamber of Serpents is a parody of the famous Harry Potter series. Even the many changes of name (such as the houses: Slipperen, Gryffinbore, Ravenbeak and Huffalump) do not hide the fact that Hogworts School of Magic and Mystery is a replica of the Hogwarts everyone knows and loves. The key difference between this book and the original series is that the main character is not Harry Potter…err, Plotter, but an American boy named Austin Winters who, until turning up on the first day of school, did not know that magic existed.

It is amusing to read about Austin’s reactions to the magic he encounters on his first day, and the logic he tries to place behind each phenomenon. He soon cottons on that these tricks are real and finds himself struggling to catch up with his classmates. Despite being sorted into Slipperen house, he is fortunate enough to be given fellow student, Hermione Danger, as a tutor outside of lessons.

As the title suggests, this book is a spoof of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which most of the same events occur, but seen through a different person’s eyes. Through his writing Ware comes up with solutions to the unanswered questions from the original novel – things readers may not even have wondered about until reading this story.

Naturally, to understand this novel and appreciate the humour, you need to have read J. K. Rowling’s books. Some extreme Harry Potter fans may feel insulted at the appropriation of the well-loved story, however in no way is Ware attempting to make fun of the legendary characters. In order to avoid copyright issues, any proceeds made will be given to the children’s charity, Lumos.

Harry Plotter and the Chamber of Serpents is a very short tale and can be read within an hour or two. It is funny and exciting however is nowhere near as brilliant The Chamber of Secrets – it would be rather insulting if it were! Those who love everything Harry Potter should definitely give this a try.

I guess since I am just a huge fan of HP I have trouble reading parodies (no, I am not. Since I loved, LOVE, the musical A Very Potter Musical, the best parody of HP so far). The only good stuff about this book were, ironically, all that was original -meaning, all that really happened in HP #2. I disliked poor Austin so much. First, because he really doesn't have any personality. Was he happy? Bored? Scared? I couldn't tell. Second, he is an American boy, and he is the one chosen? Like, he may have Merlin's blood running in his veins? He could speak Parseltongue? He was Dumblesnore's confident? Whaaaat?

Third, he sees Plotter and Ron and the rest of Gryffinbore as bullies. Yeah, ok, I can see why he would think that about the twins. But he is constantly saying Harry and Ron are stupid, that Harry acts like a diva, etc. Ehh?

Hogworts is supposed to be British, but really, nothing here resembled British. Except when they were using the word "mate". All the rest sounded pretty American to me.

Austin is 13-years-old. But sometimes it was like he was 16 or older. A 13-year-old winking at a girl? Ehh?

Was his friend Miles a good guy or what? I couldn't tell. I wasn't even sure what was the whole point of his cigarette habit.

Yeah, Austin the intelligent, smart American boy. Who comes to England and BAM, next day he is in Hogworts. Finding out the truth about secrets before even Hermione. Speaking in Parseltongue. Opening the Chamber of Serpents. Winking at girls. Looking down at Harry. Being Dumblesnore most important ally. Right **eye-roll**

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

At first, I was sceptical. I love Harry Potter and didn't think I would want to read a parody about it, I didn't want my memory of it to be tarnished; but I found that it's not, my memory of it is just enhanced.

For my book club with my boyfriend Matthew we decided on Harry Plotter and The Chamber of Serpents, A Potter Secret Parody. It was my pick and I regret it, I picked it because I knew it would be a very quick read and it was free. In all honesty it came off as a pretentious fan fic that decided it was better than every other fan fic and decided to call itself a parody. It was a standard self insert and not even a good one at that. It seems like the author didn't even put all that much work into it or only vaguely knew about Harry Potter. Matthew and I had more fun when I was reading off my highlighted passages and eviscerating the book.

"One of the teachers announced, "first years, wait here. In a moment, we'll enter the Great Hall where you'll be sorted into houses." As we waited to enter all the talk seemed to be about how much they didn't want to be in a house called Slipperen."

4.2

To start this review, I must tell you that I requested this book from NetGalley. I was lead to believe this was a humorous book (by the cover).

The concept of the story was fantastic. I laughed at some of the parts that I don't know if were to be funny.

The book gives us an interesting twist to the story we know and love

Recommended for the Harry Potter lover.

So this is a parody of Harry Potter book 2:Chamber of Secrets. It was okay. But wait a moment-there's a few problems. Other than that, this book was great. Review dedicated to Fatima! ;)

1. Wow. Only 12 years old and already smoking cigarettes?
2. This was mentioned at the start of the book- An American ended up in a UK story.
3. Actually half of this book was copied and pasted from the old version. With just a few name changes.
4. The main character was put in Slipperin(Slytherin), but he was friends with Hermione Granger, who is in Gryffindor. (Isn't those two Houses enemies?)
5. The main character isn't Harry Potter.

Okay I have to admit the title of this book caught my attention. It made me want to read it. I am a die hard fan of Harry Potter. This also takes place around the same time when Harry starts his second year. We meet Austin and american first year at Hogswarts. The sorting hat placed Austin in the House of Serpents. Everyone despises that house. I really enjoyed this book a lot. If you love harry potter this is defiantly the book for you. I hope that they're more books and make it a series. That would be awesome.

Unfortunately, this parody lacks humor and magic; although, it is quite the task trying to make a twist with J K Rowling's favorite series.
As for the main character, what a joke! Harry Potter is the hero; yet, Austin is made out to be some kind of awesome wizard, as if he was the reason Harry succeeded in the first place. Pffffft, what a laugh.

There are a lot of good reviews on this fanfiction novel, but I just couldn't get excited about it. It seemed like a bad retelling of Harry Potter #2 with all of the names changed a little. It seemed disjointed with no character development.

I found this randomly while looking through audiobooks on google play. It sounded fun to me and i got sucked right into it!

The audiobook is about an american boy who had no idea of the wizarding world. He got a letter halfway the year and got into Hogwarts. He got sorted into Slytherin in the same year as the golden trio. He has to navigate through the first year while there is a serpent on the loose that patrifieds halfbloods and muggleborns. Atop of that he opened the chamber and can speak parsletongue!

I thought this was a very fun take on the first book of the Harry Potter books! It still follows kind of the same story line of the original book but from the perspective of a slytherin who may or may not be the heir of slytherin.

The names for obvious reasons were changed to names that made me snort every time i heard it. The story is humoristic and the person who reads it has a very nice voice to listen to!

I haven't read many parody books before, if any. This one caught my eye on a website as free audiobook and I thought, why not. It has some clever play on words and I did largely enjoy it. It was of course stupid most of the time, but I also liked how the author created this friendly Slytherin guy who fills in some of the blanks in a way that the book left. Quite cleverly written, and very easy read to anyone who wants to laugh a bit about P(l)otter. It did not make fun of the numerous plot holes as I would have expected it to to be fair!
