wow, i cannot believe i am already reviewing the last book in the series. i have been doing a series of reviews for this entire book series and i am finally at its conclusion. i shall start by saying: what a book, what a book.
while I do have my problems with this installment (most of them being about the anti-climactic aspects and the way that many of the mysteries are left unsolved. curse you mr. snicket, you infuriating genius, you!) i thoroughly enjoyed it and the series as a whole 🤭
the book starts with the Baudelaires questioning wether or not to push count olaf out of the boat they share with him. this, i think, is a perfect way to sum up the moral dilemma of the series and start off the book. we meet Ishmael on the island, who “protects” his people by sheltering them. the island is supposed to be a paradise safe from the troubles of the world. how ironic it is.
i immensely enjoyed the layout of this book. the baudelaires’s revealing meeting with Ishmael, the reuniting with kit, count olaf’s role in this book…everything! this book just felt like a conclusion, even if everything wasn’t concluded. the tension and mounting drama made this book even more of a stunning last installment.
overall, i adore this series and it’s psychology and mystery as a whole. i highly recommend this series to children, teens, and adults alike! 🍓🩰

🚨 SPOILERS AHEAD 🚨
i’m putting an extra line of words here before the actual spoiler because if you’re like me you’re eyes will accidentally look down here and you’ll spoil yourself even though it says spoilers because for some reason my eyes do that so hopefully this helped someone and anyway, i’m so mad we never get to find out what is actually in the sugar bowl 😭—there are many things we never get to learn or can’t even begin to know about VFD and this world, especially if you read LSUA or TBL.
if you’re like me this drove you crazy which is why i turned to the snicketsleuth on tumblr (not sponsored, i promise!) and am now a bit of a snicket expert if i do say so myself…highly recommend his blog 👌
but anyways there were just so many shocking and crazy moments. count olaf’s death and his revealed last love for kit, the medusoid mycelium poisoning, kit’s death and childbirth, the baudelaires’s discovery about their parents’s connection to the island, and the failing of ishmael as a leader were all wonderful plot points and literary techniques.
the ending, at least was not completely tragic, and i think the “one year later” chapter served a much better purpose than the “19 years later” of harry potter! my characters are all grown up!
