I love crime thrillers, psychological thrillers, also travel memoirs, so I was excited to read this which combines crime fiction with the characters going on a trip to Spain-the best of both worlds for me! I loved how the author has combined crime thriller with a travel memoir.
Fliss and son Jamie would be going away for two weeks. Fliss needed to get away and try to recover after recent events.
Like the first book in the series, this is so easy to read, right from the word go. And so good!
I loved the setting and the descriptions of the area-Lanjarón. Great description, the sights, the smells, the atmosphere. It was wonderful. All the better because Alison Moore knows the place, (I've read and enjoyed her memoir 'Calamity Spain: Fulfilling the Dream'), it adds to the realism, which I like in a crime fiction book.
There are grittier, harder circumstances than the first book, and she kept me guessing right until the end-I absolutely didn't see that coming! Alison's writing just gets better and better, more polished with every book.
Will someone be able to come straight in here if they wanted? Does it standalone? Or do they need to read Book 1 first? It does mention things from Book 1, so yes, it could be read first or standalone-but ideally read Book 1 to get to know everyone better, and it's a great read not to be missed.
I read and greatly enjoyed Alison Moore's first Fliss Dawes mystery, so when she invited me to beta read this one, I agreed with alacrity. If anything, it is even more gripping than book 1 and I felt much more emotionally engaged with Fliss and her son, Jamie, who accompanies her to Spain on what was intended as a recovery trip disguised as work. I loved the setting, the characters and the development of the plot, which begins with the death of a girl Fliss and Jamie know well. Jamie is a computer wizard of some genius and comes into his own as he becomes involved in Fliss's search for answers. What follows is a story with many layers and red herrings, and also with plenty of suspense, especially around the character of Dan, a journalist who figures in Book 1. Dan is on his own mission in Spain, one which becomes linked to Fliss's investigation. I especially liked the fact that the so-called 'bad guys' were not typical or clichés of the standard villain so I was never completely sure who had actually done what until close to the end. The twist in the final pages of the book is definitely one I didn't see coming and was quite a shock. Well done, Alison Moore. This is a finely-constructed crime novel with characters I could relate to, and I'm really hoping there will be a third book in the series. Highly recommended!
A talented magazine journalist and her son, Jamie, who has a special level of creative brilliance. An innocent working holiday trip to Spain. From fun to festivities, tragedy strikes: murder in unusual circumstances.
Having been introduced to Fliss and Jamie in 'Dead Jealous', book one in this crime series, I was keen to see how they had progressed. I was hugely impressed.
The author takes the reader on an atmospheric journey to a little town in Spain. Her colourful descriptions create a deeply immersive experience, which becomes ever more vivid as crimes are committed.
The plot is complex, gripping and fascinating. I loved the way Fliss and Jamie’s characters develop as they interact with the people around them, following clues and working through red herrings towards a high-tension resolution I never anticipated.
This riveting novel is sophisticated yet very readable. The characters are superbly drawn, as is the intricate plotting. It can be read as a standalone, although I would recommend reading Dead Jealous first to gain a fuller understanding of the core personalities. An excellent read. I can’t wait for book three!
Greed is the second book in the series featuring Fliss, and I enjoyed getting back into her world. Once again, the mysteries kept me guessing, with plenty of high-tech tools and clever technology being used to uncover clues and piece everything together. It added a fun, modern twist to the investigation.
I especially loved the location. It really added to the atmosphere of the story and made me feel as though I was right there alongside Fliss as the mystery unfolded.
As the second book in the series, I also enjoyed seeing the characters develop and getting to know Fliss a little better. And then there’s Dan… 👀 I have to wonder if Alison J. Moore might have something more in store for these two in the future. There certainly seems to be a little something worth watching!
Another enjoyable mystery with an interesting setting, plenty of technology, and characters I’m happy to follow into the next book.
I was a beta reader for this book, the 2nd in this crime series. (I beta read the first book also)
‘Greed’ takes us to Spain with the main characters, Fliss Dawes and her son, Jamie. Whilst Fliss, a forensic psychologist, is expecting to enjoy some ‘her’ time in the southern Spanish sunshine, a body is discovered on a local beach! - Fliss, and her talented teenage son, Jamie, become embroiled in the case… its full of intrigue, suspense and rabbit holes…. A good read and I look forward to book 3.
I was very happy to be an ARC reader for this second book in the Fliss Dawes Murder Mystery series. Book 2 finds Fliss and her son Jamie travelling to Spain to have a break from recent tragic events. I enjoyed the setting in Spain and the fact that it was in a little village where Fliss and Jamie were well known and accepted by the locals. Fliss has a work assignment lined up as well to keep her busy. Firstly, she and Jamie want to catch up with their friends there. Unfortunately, a shocking death occurs, and she and Jamie are drawn into the investigation. It was good to see Fliss and Jamie working together, following various lines of enquiry. I was impressed with Jamie and the way he was able to show his intelligence and technological skills was amazing! The way his Apps could be used was fascinating. I do hope to learn more about this extremely clever young man. I thought the plot cleverly crafted. It was topical,, tackling harrowing subjects with sensitivity - fast paced and gripping! I could hardly put it down. I was almost at the end before I wondered about the perpetrator but wasn't sure at all. It’s definitely a wow ending! Thank you Alison, great stuff. Bring on book 3.
