Echo Heron presents riveting and unforgettable narratives from emergency room nurses across the nation. EMERGENCY 24/7: Nurses of the Emergency Room, portrays thirty-one nurses, each with a distinctive voice and unique view of what really goes on behind the closed doors of the secret and chaotic world of the emergency room. Also included are the moment-by-moment chronicles of eleven nurses who worked in New York City and Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001. These compelling accounts give new perspectives on the horrors and heroics of that tragic day. Ranging from inspiring to heart-rending to outrageously funny, these gripping narratives make EMERGENCY 24/7 a fascinating and provocative book—a fitting tribute to the frontline nurses.
Good book. I enjoyed the Ebola story the most, since that is something I do not know much about. Surprisingly I started reading this book on September 10, so I was reading the stories of September 11 on the 16 th anniversary. That was weird. I think it is worth reading and it does make one more appreciative of what vocation nurses have.
This collection started out strong but became redundant especially with stories about 9/11. I was put off by some of the interviewees, they came across as melodramatic and condescending. But it is a book about ER Nurses, and it delivers.
The biggest strength of this collection of interviews is probably it's biggest weakness, too many interviews about 9/11. It is probably one of the only times I've read nurses perspectives about 9/11, so if your are looking for that this is the book for you.
I love Echo Heron, especially her 2 memoirs. I think my favorite is her other collection of stories, "Tending Lives: Nurses on the Medical Front". Read "Tending Lives" instead of "Emergency 24/7" if you are looking for some ER stories mixed in with other specialties.
This book is fantastic. I am an Emergency room nurse myself, so I found this book to be very relatable. So many enjoyable moments met with stories of heart break. This was a tear jerker for sure. That first chapter sets the tone for the rest of the book.
I read this book in a day, unable to put it down. I have been out of the ER for nearly nine years now, but the non-9-11 stories brought it all back. Working in smaller ERs, I never had to take part in an actual disaster, but reading the other stories made me feel that I was there again. For the 9-11 nurses: you ARE heroes. Most of us do what we do because.....this is what we do, but the ones who cared for the victims of 9-11 are a step above that.
Echo Heron writes a good book. I have read some of her others. I wish I had read her books when I was young because I believe she would have encouraged me to become a nurse. I highly admire everyone who chooses this field and feel they do not get the credit they deserve. This books shows you what idiots people can be!! And also what dedicated angels they can be. It was also a good read.
So much yes to this!!!! I LOVED it, I didn't want it to end and purposely dragged it out as long as I could. It was so good to read stories to relate to and hear other nurses experiences. I loved loved loved all of it. As hard as the 9/11 stories were, they needed to be heard. So thankful for this read. ❤️ I want more!
