Food and storytelling have always been at the heart of Adam K. Watson’s life. Growing up in southeastern Virginia, he spent as much time obsessed with kitchens as he did with writing. After working in enough restaurants to realize cooking was better suited as a personal passion than a profession, he earned a degree in creative writing. His career ultimately led him into two decades of broadcast television production, where he worked with globally recognized brands including ESPN, the NFL, IBM’s The Weather Company, and Gulfstream Aerospace. Watson is the author of “86 The Chef,” “86 The Secret,” and “The Different-Every-Day Cafe.” He writes culinary mysteries filled with eccentric characters, dark secrets, and chaos simmering just beyond the kitchen doors.

I really enjoyed the mix of food and mystery in The Different-Every-Day Cafe. Lottie Livermore was a character I liked right away because she is a chef who can handle the stress of a busy kitchen but suddenly finds herself dealing with a completely different kind of problem. After her boyfriend disappears and her catering business starts struggling, getting her own restaurant in Dacorum, Tennessee seems like the perfect chance for a fresh start. Of course, things are never that simple. While Lottie is busy serving food like candied bacon BLTs and prime rib burgers, she discovers that her new opportunity is connected to a stolen historical letter and a shocking claim that a beloved culinary icon was a murderer. I liked watching Lottie try to make sense of everything while also trying to keep her new restaurant going. Chloe was a fun addition to the story as a teenage gamer who helps Lottie even though they have never met in person. Then there is The Admiral, a supposedly lost cat who somehow ends up becoming Lottie's roommate, which added a fun and unexpected element to the story. The mystery kept me curious because Lottie has to sort through blackmail, deception, and secrets while figuring out who she can trust. Overall, I thought this was a fun mystery with an unusual cast of characters and a restaurant setting that gave the story a cozy feel while still keeping plenty of trouble on Lottie's plate

This was a relatively short story where the idea of food bringing people together and creating connections is buried within a soft mystery.
