Ashes of Betrayal: A Canada at War Prequel Novella

Rate this book
Major Alexander Ashcombe thought the danger ended in a clearing outside Bratislava.

He was wrong.

Sent to recover an off-books weapons ledger from a former arms broker, Ashcombe and his small SAS team expect a deniable raid with a clean exit. Instead, the target is killed, the extraction vanishes, and the men sent to erase the evidence already know where to find them.

Someone has compromised the mission from inside the system.

Hunted across borders by a professional clean-up crew, Ashcombe must keep his team alive while uncovering what the ledger really contains: names, contracts, and secrets powerful enough to destroy careers on both sides of the Atlantic. But the closer he gets to the truth, the clearer the message becomes.

This was never just about the ledger.

It was about burying everyone who touched it.

Ashes of Betrayal is a tense military-espionage thriller about loyalty, institutional betrayal, and the cost of surviving a mission your own side needed you to lose.

This was a 98 page prequel to a series entitled Canada At War (INVASION / published July 2026 and INSURRECTION / releasing September 27th). The latter I would likely have named INSURGENCY. I’ve thought about this scenario many times before and I’m not the only person to have done so.

The war is with the United States.

Both this prequel and INVASION are currently bestsellers. Unsurprisingly, I suppose, considering the ongoing trade war and unprecedented tensions between Canada and America. Readers will be apt to dip into the series for those reasons alone.

I dropped 99¢ for the kindle edition to check into the quality of the writing and the plausibility of the storyline. Being a prequel, it’s introducing me to the MMC but not to the war between the US and CAN. Ash is SAS and based in the UK and after a tale of Carré-like crisscross double cross, betrayal and death - it would make a good Netflix short series - his death is faked and he and his wife and child are renamed and relocated to Canada.

I will put writing and plausibility at 7.5 or 8.0 for the most part. It’s in the suspense genre and has a vibe similar to Jason Bourne or John Wick or Jack Reacher. (Or Haywire or Salt or Black Canary.)

But it does not help with me getting a look into the main series. However at least the prequel gives me a sense that plausibility and plot and crisp writing are part of the author’s modus operandi and ethos.

The war series begins in 2036. It would have felt more like fiction had it been written in an earlier time.
