S.J. Higgins lives in South Africa with her husband and two children. Close to five years ago, the tiniest seed of a story took root in her mind. In rare quiet moments, driving to work, on her way to meetings, in meetings, that seed grew until one day she found herself wondering if she should write the story down. From the first words on paper everything changed, every spare moment become an opportunity to write and that is when The Dark Side of Chemistry was born.

This book has it all: love, passion, thrill, angst, humor and drama.

It was suppose to be a professional encounter, but it became one night of passion, that changed both of their life forever.

S.J wrote a story that is so unique and well done with a strong voice. I loved the gentle yet strong writing style, I loved the Characters and the smooth flow of the plot. I very much liked the originality of the plot and I can easily see this book becoming a movie. I could actually see it in my mind.
There's adventure, sex, love, emotion, and funny moments -- and lots of suspense.
I recommend this. It's a great read when you need an adventurous, keep in mind that it ends with a cliff hanger, and you will be begging for the next installment

Wow, this story really takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions! This suspenseful romance has a fantastic and captivating plot that kept me completely engrossed the entire time. It's a love triangle at its finest! I usually prefer a romance where there are two people hopelessly in love and maybe there are other obstacles in the way, but in this book, it's hard to tell who Skyla should really be with. I personally prefer Trent; while both Trent and his brother, Jenson, are in the military, Trent seems more level headed. He's the one who developed a dangerous serum that has now affected their lives in an irrevocable way, but it was done with the best of intentions (plus he's doing his job). Whereas, Jenson is more of a hot head, and even though you can often understand why, he tends to come off as an arrogant jerk more often than not.

And Skyla - if this were a more normal situation, I would be really angry with her. But considering the circumstances, I ended up just feeling sorry for her. So even though part of me felt a bit judgmental of how she handled things, the other part of me thought all of this still makes for a damn good story!

I really felt badly for Trent though - out of anyone so far, he's had it the worst. And Jenson, I felt the least for; I guess I just really don't care for him.

I don't want to give anything away so I won't say much more other than I found this to be a very enjoyable and easy read. I can't wait to see how this story unfolds in the next book, especially with the way it ended! I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys romances with a darker twist.

Money, Sex and Power.

No, this isn't my Christmas list. It's a review of The Dark Side of Chemistry by SJ Higgins.

It's a genre-bender, a clever story that blends the emotional appeal of a romance, an abduction that executes with the precision of a good heist, and the steadily increasing stakes of a thriller.

The story also touches on some interesting philosophical questions. If you have non-consensual sex with someone you want to have sex with under the influence of a serum that only heightens the emotions you already have.. Is it still non-consensual? We're almost in classic SciFi/Philip K. Dick territory with this one.

My favorite character was Tank. A surprising choice (he's one of the supporting characters, but I could see him as The Rock, a big guy with a big heart who just can't quite get it together as things slip through his fingers). I think it'd be great if in the end he winds up with the mousey assistant of the evil Colonel Reed. Because I don't trust that little schemer. She's up to something. Something more than just doing Colonel Reed's legwork. Hopefully they have a bright future in the sequel.

The writing itself is very clean and keeps out of the way of the developing story. A few things that stuck out for me:

Death by Orgasm! (c'mon, it's a book about Marines, you knew this one was coming)

Also, some fine use of personal prepositions (underneath him, inside her). Hubba hubba!

The entire purpose of the first 3/4ths of a well crafted romance novel is to completely and utterly convince the reader that there is no possible way the hero and heroine can ever get together for their happily ever after. And in this respect the Dark Side of Chemistry succeeds with flying colors.

I haven't read a romance/suspense novel with such an excellent setup in ages, I'm eager to see how SJ resolves this one. The follow-up will surely be worth the wait.

Triangle.

This is a Romantic Suspense novel that kept me turning pages long after I should have gone to bed.

The romance plot: Trent and Skyla are in love. What completes the triangle I allude to in the title of my review is Trent’s brother Jensen. He met Skyla first but was called away before he could do anything about it.

The suspense plot: The serum Trent is working on (this is a quote from the book) “…was intended to change the way soldiers reacted in combat situations.”

These intertwining plots are exciting. I’ve never read a Romantic Suspense novel before and liked the combination of genres. The erotic scenes were intense and well written.

I cannot wait for book two to be released to answer the questions posed by the cliffhanger.

Managed to get this one read during a hospital stay and it was a great read. The story starts with Skyla and Trent, who works with a secret serum that can help stop fear. It sets up the beginning of what proves to be a good series. When Trent is deployed to test the serum, we follow him and Skyla as they learn to live apart. More drama unfolds with Trent's brother and then when the serum is stolen the race is on to find out who has it and what they plan to do with it. Danger, intrigue and espionage, a thrilling combination and an excellent début novel. Loveable characters and while it ends on a cliffhanger, I do recommend this book to those who love a fast paced, action packed drama intertwined with a love story! Great book!

The novel starts off as romance between Skyla and Trent, a young couple very much in love. He works with her father in a lab and has developed a serum that is of interest to the military. She is shocked when he suddenly gets deployed to Afghanistan for six months.
At that point the novel still reads like regular romantic chick-lit with erotic scenes but you'll be surprised how much more the novel has in store. The erotic scenes walk the line between sensitivity and explicit rather nicely. The sex is part of an expression what connects the lovers rather than being there for the sake of it. I appreciated that very much about them and it helped to make those scenes so enjoyable. The chemistry between the lovers is excellent.
Things take a different turn when flashbacks reveal a history between Skyla and Jensen, Trent’s brother. With alternating narratives we get to see inside the heads of all characters, which is always enriching for a story in my opinion and in this case, very rewarding and useful.
Without giving much more away I can say that the novel really gets into higher gear as the love triangle and a plot involving Trent in Afghanistan and his serum bring action, drama and suspense. The shifting narratives bring now further depth to the characters and their inner conflicts. Beside the explosive plot and the drama there are many great one liners and interesting thoughts in this as well, for example: “When you’re in the field, life stands still… all you have is your memories. It’s different for those left behind, life goes on”
It shows a writer with much sensitivity and depth and one who can handle moral dilemmas and difficulties with the appropriate thoughtfulness. Yet, the story keeps you entertained throughout and you’ll yearn for the next book when you come to the exciting end.

The Dark Side of Chemistry by S.J. Higgins kicks off with Skyla and Trent saying goodbye as Trent prepares to leave almost immediately for Afghanistan on a mission involving a military serum trial. The trials are human, tested on active soldiers in actual combat situations, the results of which have an unexpected outcome for Trent in Afghanistan, and Skyla at home. During this, we meet Jenson, who is close to both Trent and Skyla, before the carpet is pulled out from under all three and the real adventure begins. The Dark Side of Chemistry is probably the only cliff-hanger in history that didn't make me angry. Instead, I was fraught for more.

Cleverly written, witty, and impossible to set down, SJ Higgins takes us from punch to punch in her masterful story. The book wraps love, lust, humor, and spine-tingling intrigue into one of the best young thrillers I have read in a while. With believable and authentic characters, realistic and lively dialogue, and an exceptionally unique story arc, I am excited to read book two when it comes out. I particularly enjoyed the character of Skyla's father, also in the military, even though he currently plays only a minor role in the scope of a large-scale story. As for the book as a whole, with a heat factor of about nine out of ten, I wholeheartedly recommend SJ Higgins' The Dark Side of Chemistry to anyone looking for a fast-paced new adult novel with an intelligent rising action, a little bit of love, and a whole lot of steam.

Trent and Skyla have been together for three years they met because he was working for her father on a secret military project. When that project requires him to go into a combat zone things for the two of them begin to change. We begin to see secrets that have been kept and the consequences of them. As Trent and Skyla are supposed to have their happy reunion everything get even more out of control as someone comes in intent to destroy their lives.

Trent is a sweetie put in a difficult position because of his work, but keeps on going because he belives it's the right thing to do.

Skyla is in a difficult position because of past choices and while I liked her character at the begining I just wanted to smack her upside the head as the story continued because she kept making the same mistake over and over.

Jensen has been put in a terrible spot and while his choices may have put him there initally, there should have been a way for him to figure things out better than how he did.

The story has a bit of several different genres making it interesting as you try to keep up with what's what and what is going on. It keeps you interested and I read this in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down.

Were there times when I wanted to smack the characters? YES! But now I just wanna see how things turn out as this ended in one of those truely evil cliffhangers!

‘The Dark Side of Chemistry’ has it all. It’s a modern fast-moving tale of intrigue and action with a healthy dose of romance.

Skyla is an occupational therapist who works with autistic children and volunteers with post combat soldiers suffering with PTSD. She comes from a military background with a partner and father in the service and a brother who was killed in Afghanistan two years earlier. In a scientific trial, her partner Trent has orders to administer a serum which manipulates emotions and motivations relating to survival by enhancing aggression and reducing fear in combat. Some receive placebos while others, the serum.

The romantic side of the story becomes deliciously complicated when Trent’s brother Jensen enters the action. He and Skyla have had a previous relationship but the attraction is still smouldering. To make matters worse an unhinged character, Colonel Reed ramps up the intrigue surrounding the scientific trial and inflicts unimaginable stress and misery on Skyla, Trent and Jensen.

The story is well researched and authentic. The dialogue is witty and slick. It’s a thriller that keeps building and growing more complex page by page making it difficult to put down. The second book of the ‘The Chemistry Series’ is due in 2016 and I’m sure readers will be anticipating it highly!

Well where do I start, from the minute I started reading I could not put it down. I never read a book that has so many genres in one. The book starts off with a steamy hammock scene and although you might think this is your every day soppy romance, you will be surprised. The twist starts where Trent is deployed to Afghanistan and meets up with his brother Jensen. Trent gets injured during a raid and soon finds himself back home. The serum that he developed in his lab land up in the hands of a revengeful enemy and he starts playing games with Skyla, Trent and Jensen, revealing some well kept secrets of their pasts.
I would recommend this book to any one enjoying sitting on the edge of their couch just to find out what happens next. Although a cliffhanger, I can personally not wait for the next book in the series.

This is the first book written by S.J. Higgins and although she is still a spring chicken in the world of literacy, she will certainly bring us some great novels in the future.

The Dark Side of Chemistry wound up being an entirely different book from what I expected, and that's a good thing. I'm a fan of subverting expectations, and this novel did exactly that on more than one occasion. This was a fast-paced read, and the storyline unfolds swiftly -- but it never felt like I was being left behind. The characters are, for the most part, well-crafted -- even though there were occasions where Jensen felt like he was all over the place and unpredictable. Tyler, even as a supporting character, stood out to me.

It became clear to me with roughly 20 pages to go that this book wasn't going to have a clean resolution and there was a likely cliffhanger on the horizon, but the way it unfolded was satisfying. It showed a change and development in Skyla from where she had been at the beginning of the story, and it did a good job of addressing some questions I had from earlier in the story.

All in all, this was an entertaining, fast-paced read, and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

In The Dark Side of Chemistry we follow Skyla Middleton as she attempts to navigate her life that’s become a complex web of passion and tension. She’s romantically trapped between two brothers, Jensen and Trent, that provides a backdrop of excitement within the tale, but the story doesn’t really get going until a long forgotten sin involving chemical experiments and the military arises to upset her world further.

Even though I’m not much of a fan of romance one of the things I like immensely about the book is that Ms. Higgins does a great job writing love scenes. She doesn’t ever go purple and keeps the pacing extremely even, teasing out the moments expertly. Also her military palaver seems dead on accurate and adds a lot of depth to the scenes in Afghanistan.

*** SPOILER ALERT*** But I had a real problem that the story ended with a cliffhanger, which I’m not a huge fan of. I really would’ve liked some closure on the story instead of having to wait for the next installment. Still though, it was a solid performance for an indie author.

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dark Side Of Chemistry (The Chemistry Series Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
This book will appeal to lovers of the romance and romantic suspense genre. From the opening passages it is obvious the that author SJ Higgins excels in those genres. The title, The Dark Side of Chemistry suits the story, which is of the chemistry of human emotions, especially those of sensual love, as well as the chemistry of a serum which forms the basis of the suspense plot.

The story is topical—this is contemporary romance and romantic suspense of today with the alpha male hero, Trent, being deploy to Afghanistan and the heroine, Skyla, left afraid of the changes that change and separation will create. Those fears are realized. Trent’s unpredictable brother Jensen and a secret as well as the known enemy enrich the story.

I give this book five stars for the romance reader as there is plenty of love and passion and an interesting plot to glue it all together.

Oh boy, where to begin with The Dark Side of Chemistry? ---READ IT!! I am not going to give the plot or any spoilers here because SJ did such a wonderful job of pacing the novel. You will get to know the characters early on and learn to love/hate them as the book moves forward. As you may have seen in other reviews, this book is a genre mixture which makes it a unique and wonderful read. The mystery and suspense build upon the love and personal relationships that are built throughout the story. The love triangle is a beast and I cannot wait to see how that eventually unfolds. I know who I am rooting for, but I guess we will have to wait until next year for book two. The enormous cliffhanger ending is wretched, but I saw it coming and in SJ’s defense she does apologize at the end of the book for it. (That was new and different :)) Overall this is a wonderfully paced, genre-bending, fun read that I would happily recommend to any reader.

S.J. Higgins lives in South Africa with her family. 'The Dark Side of Chemistry' is her first book publication and I wasn't disappointed. A story of love, deceit, betrayal, and deadly secrets.

A fast-paced read that grips emotional reason from the get-go and not everything is as it seems. No spoilers coming your way but I will say that the characters are strong and bring life throughout the pages with mystery, intrigue, and juicy under-bellied secrets.

Mrs. Higgins certainly does a good job of building a nice creative back-drop for a deadly game of lies as the characters tip toe a powerful ploy to be reckoned with that reveals a relentless and tense conclusion.

A complex world of realism and desperation takes us readers smoothly through a journey of suspenseful happenings. A novel not to be missed and definitely a great addition to any kindle library.

I was pleasantly surprised by this story. I absolutely loved the author's writing style. There were so many unexpected events that I was literally holding my breath in certain points of the story.

My favorite character was Trent. I couldn't help but feel bad as the events unfolded. Oh how my heart went out for him.

The plot was very well written and it definitely held my attention. The characters are well developed (some of them I wanted to slap but I won't mention who due to spoilers). Hey, if any book can rise that type of emotion out of me, then it's a great story as far as I'm concerned.

Now, I'll have to wait for the sequel. Almost scared to find out what will happen but I have to know. I do wish the author would write a separate book about Trent. I think he's about to become a deep, intense and completely messed up character in the sequel.

The Dark Side of Chemistry brings out a strong mix of raw emotions from the reader. Anyone can relate with the feeling of passion, helplessness, anger, betrayal, and lust. Realistic themes carefully embedded within the story made it even more human and more amazing.
SJ developed the characters so well that any reader can easily warm up to them through the descriptions and the conversations. It is easy to fall in love with each of the characters who can charm you in their unique ways.
The play between the secrets of the past and the present situation kept me turning the pages to absorb more of the story.

Wow! I really loved this book, and I'm now absolutely hanging out for its sequel. The characters are incredibly well crafted and thought out, and what starts as a romance, builds into an intriguing and engaging plot, with the development of characters and sinistry forming to build up to an ending which is an absolute cliff hanger! It ends wanting you to quickly grab its sequel and with so may questions. The entire book was very clevely done - and its one I would highly recommend to anyone who likes suspense, romance thrillers.

I cannot wait to see the next installment from this author! Completely had me hooked cover to cover.

Boy, what a ride. The book begins as a cute romance between a girl and her boyfriend who's being shipped unexpectedly off to war. It leaves that safety net and becomes so much deeper, with twists and turns and unexpected deception and betrayal. By the end, the reader's left wondering how in the world this whole mess is going to get cleared up. Layers upon layers upon layers of conflict.

At first, the masked antagonist comes off a bit cliche and ill-motivated. As things progress, however, we learn more about said villain and that's part of the interest.

I'm excited for the next installment and hope things get sorted out.

I was surprised by this novel. I was thinking mystery thriller but she hit me over the head right up front with some very graphic sexual activity. I was intrigued and had to read on. I have said before erotica is not my thing but this is the second novel to kick my butt into gear. I may be a convert. I got a great thriller with a little dirty to spice it up. The only I would have liked is for the female lead to be a bit more assertive. She was constantly being bossed around by men and was ok with it. I really hope I see her come into her own more in the next installment....which I plan to read as soon as it hits :)

Usually when I review books, they are of a genre I don’t normally read. Happily this wasn’t the case here. This was a romantic suspense story of the highest order. It is a story of a dangerous serum developed by Trent, and the affect it has on his family and friends.
It moves along at a rattling pace, and it’s conclusion leaves you breathless wanting more. Great characters, it has everything you could possibly want from a story. It was the perfect read for me
