Lewis J. Sutcliffe is a fantasy author from Yorkshire, named after Lewis from the Inspector Morse novels by Colin Dexter. His work blends mythic world-building, morally complex characters, and the high stakes of epic fantasy with a grounded, human core.
Disclaimer: I beta read it, this is an unbiased review, etc etc, you know the drill.
Bound by Blood and Silver is in parts a classic epic adventure and in parts an exploration of the chosen one and coming-of-age tropes. It doesn’t look away from darkness and visceral moments, but it is not a dark adventure, nor is it grimdark.
I want to especially highlight Lewis’ skill in moving the story with a great sense of pace and flow, advancing the story without making it a rush. Letting it breathe and grow as we advance and discover both the world and the characters.
The characters, especially Darien and Callen show Lewis’ skill in transitioning seamlessly from one stage in their arcs to the following one.
Darien, as our Main Character is your classic young hero, full of doubts and in need of direction. Fate ripped him from the only thing he knew, the inn that received him as an orphan baby, and the man who welcomed with an open heart. Queue the mentor and his destiny. And his struggle to come to terms with things.
Callen, on the other hand, is a “blood debt”. And his is the story of a young boy who becomes a Debtbound, one of the coolest Assassin-type groups I’ve recently read. You can almost believe in their reasoning for what they do. 🤣
Regarding the worldbuilding, it’s a really interesting one that, albeit not being novel, feels fresh and lived in. I am particularly in love with the backstory of a ship, if that doesn’t tell you how good this is, nothing will.
The minions of the dark are striking, showcasing Lewis’ visual acumen, and how tied-in it is with his vision for the series.
Of course, it being a debut work, it will have some inevitable warts and imperfections, chiefly among them is a slow early development, that’s partially skill and partially being a first book in an epic series.
In short, Bound by Blood and Silver is a fresh take on the classic epic stories, it doesn’t shy away from blood and darkness and difficult decisions, without ever stopping being a tale of growth and defiance.
