It is the summer of 1963 in rural East Tennessee. Ethan Ward, 13 is enjoying his summer vacation. On a trip to a friend's house, on a hot and dusty road, he sees two black strangers shoot and kill a deputy. They escape leaving him the only witness. The men are never caught and for years Ethan lives in fear of their return. Then, in a chance meeting six years later, he learns that things are not always what they appear, and that GOOD AND EVIL AREN'T DIVIDED ALONG THE COLOR LINE.
Imagine being a 13-year-old boy and witnessing a murder. And imagine afraid for your life for years. That is the life that young Ethan Ward lives. He has seen two black men kill the local deputy and now he is worried that they will come back after him.
The murder happens in 1963 and the book follows Ethan through high school, through college and even serving in Vietnam. Ethan believes in the goodness of people no matter what their color and he lives what he believes.
I really enjoyed this book, I was 11 years old in 1963, and grew up in the south. I lived on a dirt road, loved a Grape NeHi, and walked to school every day. So I can identify with Ethan.
I read a little every day when I got home from work, and went to work the next day and read some more when I got home. Close to the end while I was at work I was really worried about the person on trial. I knew it was a work of fiction but I think the book was so well written that the characters seemed real, real enough to worry about them. And for just that reason, this book gets 5 stars.
This had potential. The bones of the plot were there, but the dialog was just clunky and very unnatural sounding. Plot points were over explained and overwritten. Sometimes you need to trust the reader to make logical conclusions.
Also, this is Christian fiction...just in case people want to know that in advance. I didnt know until I started reading.
I enjoyed this book and liked the characters. It had a small town feel with an interesting story line. Not a ton of excitement, but I wanted to find out what happened:)
For years Ethan deals with the fact he saw a man killed when he was thirteen and what happens haunt him years later the truth comes out and Ethan learns things aren't always as they seem...
