Unexpected Dates #3

Her Off-Limits Charity Date

Rate this book
I wasn't looking to fall in love—especially not with the man my boss has a crush on.

As a professional event planner, I’m used to managing chaos. My own love life, however, is another story. Especially after I meet my brother’s new brother-in-law and discover he looks like he walked straight out of a romance novel.

Tall? Check.
Piercing blue eyes? Check.
Broody enough to make my heart do inconvenient things? Double check.

Unfortunately, Zane Beckett also happens to be a famous actor. And our first meeting gets off to a rocky start when he finds out I’ve never seen any of his movies.

Sorry! (Not sorry!)

In my defense, he stars in zombie films, and I’m a world-class scaredy-cat. But the more I get to know the man behind the pasty make-up, the more I realize he’s a soft-hearted single dad who’d do anything for his teenage daughter. Including being auctioned off at a charity fundraiser when dating is the last thing on his mind. But while other women will be bidding for a chance to spend time with him, I get the VIP experience for free. Soon we're sharing laughs, lingering glances, and enough chemistry to make me forget that falling for him was not on my to-do list.

Until my boss offers me the promotion I’ve always wanted. There’s just one she's decided Zane is exactly the kind of man she wants, and she expects me to play matchmaker.

How am I supposed to choose between the career of my dreams and the man who’s captured my heart?

One of our main characters, Hadley, is a member of an online book club. She is thankful to have female friends after being raised by her “single dad and an older brother.” Hadley is also a member of a group of women who meet for an online book club. I have never thought about an online book club. In my opinion, that would be great. You can be in comfortable clothes, with no fighting traffic, no severe weather to deal with, and no bad drivers to watch out for.
Hadley is going to visit her brother and sister-in-law to have dinner with them. One of the ladies asks if there is a chance that Mia’s brother will be there. That would be “Zane Beckett, a.k.a. Hollywood’s Mr. Menace.” Zane is a popular actor as a villain and not only is he good looking, but he is very convincing in his role as a villain.
Hadley is very unhappy with the lady she works for, and I do not blame her at all. She is demanding and does not appreciate all that Hadley does. She is only out for herself!
Imagine her surprise when she arrives for dinner at her brother and sister-in-law’s and the door is answered by none other than Zane Beckett. Zane is taken aback by her reaction. He has a teenage daughter who he has been raising by himself since his wife passed away ten years ago. They seem to hit it off especially when they team up against her brother and sister-in-law in a game of pickleball. Now, I have heard a great deal about pickleball, but I have never played it.
Now, a little bit more about Hadley’s boss. She is always out for herself and does not give Hadley the respect she has earned. I could not work with someone like that, especially since Hadley sees her a great bit. She is after Hadley to get someone famous and popular for an upcoming event. Someone who will draw people in and make the event successful. Zane is one of the few people she’s met that are famous, but will he be willing to agree to appear at the event?
Now, I do not want to give too much away and spoil this wonderful story for you. Will Zane be willing to help Hadley out and agree to being part of the event? What will Zane ask of Hadley in return if he agrees to be part of her work event? Wil there be further friction between Hadley and her dreadful boss? To find out the answers to these questions and more, get your copy of Her Off-Limits Charity Date by Liwen Y. Ho today! You can thank me later!

That was unexpected, but so good!

Liwen Y. Ho has written about her main character Hadley who is an event planner with a very demanding boss. The unexpected came when Hadley gets to finally meet the brother of her brother’s wife. Mia’s brother is a successful actor, but for another unexpected, Zane is the hero in zombie movies. Zane with his daughter Evie are there for Mia’s birthday dinner. Doesn’t take much conversation between Zane and Hadley for Zane to receive unexpected views from Hadley. Hadley has not seen one of his movies!
There are some very lovely, funny parts throughout the rest of this book. Like Hadley showing Evie unexpected things you can do with fake eyelashes. Lots of good banter and puns between Hadley and Zane. Evie’s comments are delightful, but very much a teenager.
What I always appreciate about Liwen Y. Ho’s books is that Christian faith is such a part of the story. Being honest, being gracious and generous is something that is a way of life for both Zane and Hadley as Christians who know that their life also has limits. Like Zane won’t kiss in his movies.
One more unexpected. Could not believe that Liwen wrote about zombie movies. Yet, that made this book so good and very funny with Hadley’s refusal to watch them. Hadley and Zane had different views on many subjects, but at the core was a deep sense and understanding of the love of God.
Recommend this book to anyone who likes a clean romance written by an author that puts lots of happy moments in amongst the story line. Easy to read, with being left with thoughts that continue to uplift long after finished reading the story.

Her Off-Limits Charity Date is the third book in the Unexpected Dates series. I highly recommend this well-written, delightful read, which is like the two previous books in the series.
Hadley Wells is an event planner who is extremely likable and funny. She is busy with her career, so she doesn’t have time for a relationship. She has a big charity event coming up and needs a celebrity to be auctioned off.
Zane Beckett is a movie star known as Mr. Menace since the bulk of his movies
are zombie movies. He is a single dad to his teen-age daughter Evie, and he also happens to be the brother-in-law of Hadley’s brother. Zane would like someone in his life who can be a positive female influence for Evie.

Hadley attends a birthday dinner for her brother where she meets Zane and Evie. At first, she is intimidated by Zane. However, they hit it off and she agrees to spend time with Evie, and he agrees to do the charity auction. As they spend time together and she gets to know him, she realizes he is not who she thought he was. He is sweet, down-to-earth and has quirky characteristics that make him relatable. Zane learns that she is compassionate and has a servant’s heart. Zane is a changed man because of Hadley, and Hadley learns to trust in herself and do what’s hard.

There are humorous puns along the way that help bring out the fun side of this romantic comedy. For a light-hearted, fun, happily-ever-after, this is one you need to read!

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions expressed are my own.

Her Off-Limits Charity Date is book 3 in the Unexpected Dates series and just as cute and funny as the prequels.

Hadley is busy with her career, but I wouldn’t say a stereotypical “career woman”. She loves her family and is just a really sweet and nice person.

Zane is the main male character in this single das romance. He’s not only the brother of Hadley’s sister in law, he’s also a well known actor and a widower who tries his best to focus on his teenage daughter Evie.

Despite the topic of grief and loss, this is - like all the books I have read by Liwen Y. Ho - such a feel good book. Her stories and characters always make me smile and their faith and the lessons they learn through it feel natural.

How the two of them got together seemed a bit unrealistic to me and I also expected there to be a bigger issue with them getting together (they fall in love pretty fast especially considering that he wasn’t interested in any woman in 10 years), but I really liked them as a couple. They had great chemistry and I loved that Hadley connected so well with Evie.

This is a short but absolutely charming Christian romance that I highly recommend if you’re looking for a comfort read.

* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.

Hadley's job as an event planner keeps her fully occupied, to the exclusion of dating. But when a meeting with her brother's new brother-in-law, who happens to star in zombie movies the like of which she'd never even consider watching, piques her interest, she could be tempted to rethink - because the 'zombie' shows he's also a very caring dad. Better yet, his daughter takes to her and Zane encourages them to spend time together. But when faced with a choice between a relationship and her job, which will win?

Good clean fun. I'm not a fan of zombies either, so I sympathise with Hadley, but it was delightful to see Zane's human side and the reasons he chose to do what he does. And it was better still to see him finally able to move past (work through?) the grief that was stopping him really living life. Evie doesn't come into things a lot, but I enjoyed seeing her get along so well with Hadley and supportive of Zane marrying again. Hadley's willingness to put up with her boss went rather further than I can imagine going, but the end worked well, so that made up for it! All in all, a good read.

Oh my, this was a fun collection of books written by Liwen Y. Ho!
I love reading about book club friends and finding out each of their own stories.

In this story, we find Hadley, who has been so busy with her job as an event planner that she doesn’t have time for a relationship. She’s heard about the brother of her sister-in-law, but he’s just not someone she’d go for. After all, he is a tall, handsome movie star who plays a zombie. Uck!
But after she meets him and they get to know each other, sparks fly, and they can’t stop it.

This was a delightful book to read! As are all of Liwen Y. Ho’s books!
She has such a fun, enjoyable way of writing her characters with very relatable personalities.
Liwen Y. Ho is one of my go-to authors when I want to read a light, fun, clean, romantic book. However, her books are also full of sweet life lessons that readers can apply to their lives. Her writing is smooth and easy to read.

I highly recommend you pick it up.

This sounded so cute and it ended up being a lot of fun to read! Her Off-Limits Charity Date is the third book in Liwen Y Ho’s Unexpected Dates series.
Hadley and Zane were fun together. They had an easy chemistry and connection. I enjoyed reading about them interacting and spending time together. I love how they just seemed to fit each other but how they still took the time to get to know each other. It was sweet to read about them being vulnerable with each other.
This was a short but still engaging book. The characters were relatable. I am not a scary movie person either so I totally understood Hadley. It was so funny to read about Hadley just rambling when she was nervous. I also love how you got to see Zane’s vulnerable side when he spent time with Hadley. He was trying to be the best dad that he could be but some days were harder than others. Evie was such a teenager but you could tell that she loved both Zane and Hadley.
I really enjoyed this book and I would totally recommend it! Her Off-Limits Charity Date is a clean Christian romance.

This is a faith-based, clean, contemporary rom-com with dual POV. We meet Zane Beckett, a well-known actor. Problem is he's stuck in a rut playing Mr. Menace, a zombie. Hadley works from home as an event planner. She's very good at her job but she's blessed with a very demanding boss.

Hadley plans a fundraiser and asks Zane if he would be willing to have a date with him auctioned as the main item. Zane agrees, but you'll have to read Her Off-Limits Charity Date to find out how much he was auctioned for. If I showed it here you would think it was a typo.

I liked all of the characters. Zane's young teen daughter Evie, as well as his sister Mia are both eager for him to start dating (his wife died several years ago). So when he shows an interest in Hadley they are supportive. And to keep you on your toes, Mia is married to Hadley's brother Will.

Zane and Hadley's relationship comes together fast. Everyone except Hadley's boss (read the story) is happy for them and they find their own happy-ever-after.

I was given an ARC of this story but all thoughts and comments are mine, given voluntarily.

Whoever said zombies didn't have emotions? This is a sweet celebrity romance that combines hilarious puns and bookish references. Add to this mix a matchmaking sister who does know better along with teen angst and you can see exactly why Hadley is needed and why she becomes smitten. I appreciate that there is an abundance of cautious communication, especially as Zane and Hadley are older and more hearts are at risk. At the same time, once they commit, it is refreshing to see how they approach decision-making with a balance between faith and reason.

The Unexpected Dates series has been a lovely romcom series that is gentle, witty, and fun. Seeing friends support one another through stories and relationships provides Hadley the encouragement she needs to see that God has good things in store for her outside of her books. While Zane is a regular zombie version of Mr. Darcy, the real star is Hadley as she grows in her confidence and identity as a beloved child of God. If you are looking for a love story where the right match is just around the corner, Zane and Hadley will have you smiling and wanting to grab some popcorn as you enjoy their heartfelt romance.

Another great, feel good story by Liwen Ho. A quick and easy read to relax in the moment and just enjoy a romance story. I loved the love that crept into the MC's and how their relationship developed.
I love Liwen's faith elements, they are always up my alley. Although I felt this story didn't have as many bible references as her previous works - I love it when she uses a bible reference to help her characters make good decisions, I missed that in this story.
As always, there was great chemistry while keeping it clean.
And what ever happened to the old lady that won the auction? I feel she was forgotten.
I also didn't feel the off-limits too much. It didn't feel like there was opposition. Everyone was trying to matchmake them.

My stats:

Chemistry: 3
Spice: none
Humor: 2
Drama: 1
Suspense: 0
Foul language. none
Faith elements: 2

A sweet story with plenty of humor.

Hadley is happy with her life. Well, other than dealing with her boss, but that is a necessity towards starting her own event planning business. Zane is a successful movie star, but he has been struggling through life since his wife's death 10 years earlier. Still he tries to be the best dad possible to his daughter Evie. When Hadley attends her sister-in-law's birthday celebration, she never imagines feeling any connection to Zane who stars in scary movies, but there is more under that zombie exterior.

I loved watching Zane gradually come back to life and Hadley learn to stand up for herself. And then there was Evie who was the sweet and sassy teen who united everyone. Add all the wordplay and laughter, and Her Off-Limits Charity Date was the perfect light-hearted rom-com.

I enjoyed this Christian romcom. It's a second chance at love for the single dad zombie (hahaha). Zane is an actor who found emotional safety in being a zombie on screen until he met Hadley. Her Off-Limits Charity Date felt upbeat, cute, and sweet. It made me smile and giggle. I needed a shorter, lighthearted story, and this ARC came right on time. Thank you to Liwen Y. Ho. I stayed up late reading when I should have slept because it put me in a good mood.

I loved Hadley, Zane, Evie, Will, and Mia. I want more of them. Zane's attempts to smile were funny because that's relatable. My resting face also needs work. Liwen's books pull me in because her characters are realistic, the stories are entertaining, and there are light faith references. I keep adding more of her books to my TBR list.

I read an ARC of this book, but this review was voluntary. All opinions are my own.

Her Off-Limits Charity Date is a heartwarming, punny, romantic comedy. Hadley, an event planner, and Zane, an actor, meet at a family dinner because Zane is Hadley's sister-in-law's brother. Hadley asks Zane to be the celebrity for her upcoming charity event when the previously arranged celebrity is suddenly unavailable. Zane's teen daughter, Evie, is a delight and a determined matchmaker. Hadley has not seen any of Zane's movies because she is a scaredy cat who is not into zombies. (Smart girl!) But as she works with Zane she discovers the man behind the characters he portrays. This well written book captured my heart completely and I breezed through the book in one evening. I was sorry to get to the end because I was so enjoying these characters, their puns and all the interesting twists in the plot! This is a great way to spend an evening!

When I want to read a romcom that will make me laugh out loud, one of my first choices will be something by Liwen Y Ho, and this is a story that surely did not disappoint. The characters are the kind of people I would probably want as friends if they were alive. They don't take themselves too seriously so they are able to see the hilarity of some of their own attitudes. They do, however, take God and the Bible seriously so the story does incorporate Biblical principles. They work at supporting each other within their individual strengths and weaknesses. Though some of the situations are a little improbable, they are all definitely possible to the point that I did laugh out loud a lot as I read this book. Altogether something that I highly recommend. Though I was fortunate enough to be an ARC reader, the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Loved Zane and Hadley's story!! Zane's sister is married to Hadley's brother. Hadley goes to her brother's house for her sister-in-law's birthday. There, she meets Zane and his daughter, Evie. Evie has been praying for a mom, though Zane's not looking to date, much less looking to marry again. Zane is drawn to Hadley and wants to see her again. He decides that getting Hadley to befriend his daughter would be a way to do just that. What he doesn't plan on is falling for Hadley, and that Hadley also wants something from him. Love how these two get together, and how things work out.

This book was, for me, a mood-lifter. I especially enjoyed Hadley, the FMC, who had a great attitude toward people and was generally good-natured and honest in her dealing with others. Who would have guessed that she would be drawn to Zane, an actor who is famous for playing a zombie? Even more so, who would have guessed how perfectly the role suited Zane at the stage in life he was in as a widower and how knowing Hadley helped Zane “come into the light”? I loved their interactions with one another and with Zane’s teenage daughter. Such fun banter! This is the third book in this series but it can definitely be read as a standalone without losing anything. I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.

I loved this inspirational and funny romance between Hadley, an event planner, and Zane, a celebrity actor of Zombie movies. They met at a birthday family birthday party. Later when an event that Hadley was in charge of lost the main attraction for a celebrity auction for a children's hospital, she was able to persuade Zane to be the main attraction. By the time the event took place, they both had fallen for each other. The auction was successful and afterward Zane and Hadley began to date. The characters are so wonderful and there were a lot of funny things that made the story enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this as a clean romance with HEA ending. This is a clean romance.

Hadley is invited to her brother and sister-in-law’s house for a birthday dinner. Her brother’s brother-in-law, Zane Beckett, was invited as well with his daughter. Hadley is an event planner and Zane is an actor. At first she doesn’t like him, but they need favors from each other. She needs a celebrity to be auctioned for an even she is helping with. He needs someone to reach out and help his teenage daughter. The decide to help each other. Could it be more?

This was a good story and I enjoyed the characters. I though Hadley’s boss was not nice. It was interesting to see how Hadley’s view of Zane changed the more they got know each other. It was a feel-good story.

I received an ARC from the author and am leaving an honest review.

The third book in the Unexpected Dates series delivers the same light humor and lovable characters. All three take place in the same universe, so you'll recognize Hadley's brother and sister-in-law if you've read the other two. I love that the real challenges of being a Christian in the entertainment industry are acknowledged, and Zane's willingness to adjust his career to live his convictions is admirable. Often, a couple that moves this fast seems unrealistic, but the preexisting connection between Zane and Hadley via their siblings makes it feel believable. I love that both characters demonstrate their faith in a natural way that prevents the reader from feeling preached at. This is one of the things I enjoy about Liwen Y. Ho's books. I highly recommend this delightful rom-com.

Quick, Easy, Fun Read
What happens when an event planner who loves romance meets an actor who has made zombie movies his own? Lots of unexpected, honest conversations—and an unexpected alliance!
Hadley urgently needs an actor for a charity auction, while single-dad Zane needs a down-to-earth woman of faith to mentor his teenage daughter, Evie. Cue easy banter, a little matchmaking, and unexpected pressure from Hadley’s boss and her older brother.
This was a quick, easy, fun read from a new-to-me author, with a lovely thread of faith woven throughout the story. I really enjoyed the lighthearted feel, the conversations, and how the characters’ lives came together, even if some parts were a bit predictable. This story is a great beach read and would make any commute easier to bear.

Once I found out this book had zombies I was pretty excited to find out how zombies fit into a rom-com. I loved that Hadley was in a book club group, but didn't like her boss from the start only because of how demanding she seemed to be. It definitely works out in the end. Zane and Hadley really end up bonding over helping Zane's daughter.
Christian themes throughout, like church and God being a part of conversations and events. Clean in language and behavior, including teaching the teenager the same.
I love how the author takes a theme and keeps it new. Definitely recommend the book. Lots of laugh out loud and big smile moments.

Right off the bat, I knew I would love this book just by the dedication. I hadn’t started the story yet and I was already chuckling.
The zombie jokes and puns kept me grinning and chuckling as I read the story. It was more than just funny though. It was thoughtful and sweet as well. As a parent of a teen, I appreciated Hadley’s parenting advice. And the twist with Hadley’s boss, I never saw coming. I really enjoyed this book. It’s a great addition to the Unexpected dates series.

I was given an advanced copy of this book for my unbiased opinion. It was refreshing to read a love story without all the intimate details so many authors feel is necessary. Being a Christian myself, and losing my lifelong love to death, I have personal experience in seeing God work in my life by bringing me a second Godly husband. The characters in this book were focused on seeking God’s guidance and listening to His wisdom. I would encourage readers to add this book to their libraries and perhaps even recommend it to anyone looking for guidance but unsure where to begin.

It was so nice to see both an FMC and a MMC who appear like they have a hard shell overcome some personal obstacles and speak up for themselves and become their true selves. This was my first Liwen book and she jumped right into my “if she writes it I’m reading it” list. This was quirky and funny and had so much heart and they are so stinkin cute. It was over too soon and I highly recommend this. Oh and I want to take how to get organized lessons from them Hadley.

I loved this story! Hadley and Zane were so much fun to read about. I enjoyed the way that they were able to get past each others defenses and get to know each other on a level that allowed them to form a friendship that developed into something more. Their families and friends added to story and their help in “getting them together” was great. I liked how Zane encouraged Hadley and helped her over come her insecurities. They were able to bring out the best in each other and lead them to a happy ever after.

Her Off-Limits Charity Date

While being a faith-based book this was such a fun story to read. Hadley is an event planner who enjoys the excitement of the planning and execution of the event. Zane is not only a famous actor but also a single father and widower. Hadley’s brother is married to Zane’s sister to make things a bit more complicated. Zane needs a woman of faith to help guide his teenage daughter. Hadley needs someone to fill in at a charity auction. I highly recommend you read the book to learn more.

This is the third in Ho’s series on Unexpected Dates, and I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first two. Once again her humor hits just the right notes – it’s funny without being disrespectful, and I chuckled my way through the chapters. The “unknown” quotes that start each chapter are especially hilarious. The characters are so much fun, with lots of good banter between them, including the male lead’s 15 year old daughter. This is the kind of rom com I really like!

This was such a fun book, full of laugh-out-loud moments. I loved Hadley from the start with her attitude and outlook on life. Then I met Zane – I loved him as well, but he definitely needed to loosen up a bit. It was sweet that he would do pretty much anything for his sweet daughter. I loved all of the growth in the relationship between Zane and Hadley. Even when they hit a slight snag, they handled things very well, and together! This book was well written and definitely worth reading.

The Unexpected Dates series has been amazing so far and I love the book club gang. This time it’s Hadley’s turn and it was fun to follow her on her journey of thinking that Zane is scary, to having a crush on him and to finally falling in love with him.

Similarly, Zane may felt like he was out of her league, but with persistence and lots of love, he finally overcomes the challenges— be it in the form of a protective brother or his own doubts.

Fun addition to the Unexpected Dates series by Liwen Y. Ho.
Hadley works from home, hardly ever goes out and doesn’t like scary movies.
Zane is a single dad and an actor who only plays the bad guy in scary movies.
They are “family” her brother is married to his sister. That’s what brings them together but is it the only thing to keep them together?
