Detective Dennis Haggarty arrives in Serenity, CO to attend a funeral, not investigate homicides. But finding a corpse on the mortuary lawn wasn’t in his plans either. The townsfolk may be willing to ignore the facts, but Dennis can’t avoid doing his job—especially after his instincts tell him it’s murder.

When Denver police detective Dennis Haggerty travels to the small Colorado town of Serenity, he only expects to spend a couple of days with his estranged sister, Kimmy, while she deals with burying her recently deceased husband. On his way to the visitation he meets another recent widow and a woman dies in a fall during the visitation. He soon learns there’s been a string of deaths in the small town, all ruled either natural or accidental. The statistical improbability of so many deaths in a short time in such a small town, along with his gut instincts, leads Dennis to believe there’s a serial killer loose in Serenity.

When he tries to convince the police chief that there’s more to the deaths than meets the eye, he’s met with resistance and encouraged to leave town. Dennis is nothing if not stubborn, and he keeps poking and prodding into the town’s secrets. But when he finds himself falling for his prime suspect, his investigation gets even more complicated than it already was.

Accidental Death: A Dennis Haggerty Mystery pulls the reader in on the very first page and doesn’t let go. While the story is engrossing and the solution a real killer, the characters are what really makes this novel a keeper. From persistent Denny to whiny Kimmy to independent Jillian to the incompetent police chief and all the other characters who populate small towns everywhere, each comes across as a real person. Based on the title, it sounds like there will be more Dennis Haggerty mysteries. I’ve read another book, Dying Embers, by this author and loved it, too, so I’ll be first in line for another Dennis Haggerty mystery!

Accidental Death by B.E. Sanderson This is B.E. Sanderson's second mystery/suspense and what a delightful wade into small town life, politics, and murder. Serenity, Colorado has been plagued by a series of accidental deaths. Denver police detective Denny Haggarty arrives in response to a plea from his sister, the widow of the most recent death. The longer he stays in Serenity, the more his crime radar pings. Add in Jillian Underwood, an "outsider" whose husband was one of the decedents and the reader gets a hard look a life behind the facade of small town living--and death.

Ms. Sanderson draws sharp characters--even the secondary--and while it would have been easy to create caricatures, she gives all of them multi-dimensions and depth. Altogether a wonderful read! If you like your suspense with twists and turns and just the right touch of romance, grab this one!

When Detective Dennis Haggarty travels from his home in Denver to the small Colorado town of Serenity to be with his sister when her husband is buried he expects it to be a quiet place where nothing much happens. It's freezing cold and he can't wait to leave the awkwardness between himself and his sister and return back to Denver and his job. However a local woman who he meets briefly at the funeral dies in what is considered by the local police as an accident but Dan isn't so sure and comes to the conclusion that there are secrets in this small town that he feels compelled to reveal.

I really enjoyed this book, from Dan digging into the townsfolk's lives to try and get to the bottom of what is really going on to his cautious relationship with a local widow who is the object of his sister and other townspeople's gossip. An intriguing story that builds and culminates in a twist that I didn't see coming.

I started reading Accidental Death this morning around 0730 and at 1728 I've just finished it. I was riding a high when I started it after correctly working out the bad guy in Nora Roberts' The Liar yesterday, so I wasn't prepared for failure with this one at all. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I had no idea whodunnit until the end. It had a good mix of characters, a good dash of darkness, snappy dialogue and enough twists & turns to satisfy the most exacting reader. There was romance but it didn't intrude on the story, just ran smoothly alongside it - oh and the body count! B E doesn't exaggerate when she uses the tag line "dropping like flies". I'll be recommending this one to all my friends and family who enjoy a good mystery.

I received this book from a GoodReads Giveaway.
At first, the book started off slow. It took me a while to just sit down and read it.
After a while, the story started picking up and the murders are what made me more interested.
Throughout the story, it keeps you guessing, until you start reaching the end and you realize that the killer is pretty obvious. The story line is also pretty frustrating because nobody listens to the main character. But overall, it's a good read, thank you for the book!

Small town secrets, familial dysfunction and a serial killer on the loose make ACCIDENTAL DEATH a suspenseful, twisty mystery that kept me guessing until the end!
