This review contains spoilers!

The Fallen Faithful is a story about Annie, a devotee of Ekris, the god of love. She serves in his House as a sort of a courtesan. She decides to leave, because she fell in love, and her fiance fogets all about her, because of Ekris' curse. Annie encounters Davian, a devotee of the god of death and pain, and helps him solve the murder of his wife. Except, more devotees are going missing...

This book is marketed as "romantasy x murder mystery", "ancient Greece inspired pantheon", "FMC with religious trauma", and "it's a bit culty" - so I divided my review into a few parts!

1. FANTASY

First of all, I have to say I am completely sold on the pantheon. I am someone who hates when authors take real deities and put them in the story, completely disregarding their myths, personalities, etc. TFF does a fantastic job of introducing an entirely new religion and gods with backgrounds, distinct personalities, and relationships between them.

I definitely love the fact that it's not just Greek Mythology With Different Names (TM), but it's loosely inspired by it with its own spirit. I think the wordbuilding is a strong aspect of the story. I wish we got even more of it!

2. MURDER MYSTERY

Three women gone missing. One body found. Before that, one boy died. Ritualistic murders. All sounds amazing.

I wish we got more of the murder mystery aspect. Once the story starts, two devotees are dead already, so is the child. Throughout the book, only one person gets killed before the grand finale when almost all victims have been murdered. Because of that, the majority of the story feels kind of slow with low stakes. I believe a faster tempo with the characters trying to uncover the murderer ASAP before another person is gone, and the murderer being right on their feet with another body and another one, would be more beneficial.

The perpetrator could be considered predictible, although the narration portrays him as mysterious enough to be a surprise for some/most readers. If there were more characters fitting the murderer profile, it would definitely be more shocking.

3. ROMANCE AND CULTY VIBES

The weakest aspect of the story. Maybe this book is set to have a sequel and that's why some plots were unsatisfactory?

The characters all have a pretty weird relationship with the idea of prostitution. As in, Annie technically likes it, but she's been groomed into it and she has people-pleasing tendencies. And she comes to some conclusions about it, but not full. And House of Love is kinda culty, but not really.

- Annie is taken by the House of Love as a child and trained to be a prostitute (!) She serves patrons in the House of Love, but she can't have penatrative sex, because in the afterlife she is going to join her god's, Ekris', harem. So be a prostitute, but for the gods. Okay, culty.
- Davian's wife is missing for like 3 months, and he believes she's probably dead.
- In chapter 5 he says he would have tasted Annie the day before (their second meeting) had she not stopped him. Guy must've loved his wife dearly, but we'll come back to that.
- Davian asks Annie if he could be her client, because she works in a brothel (not the House, but a normal one). Meaning, if he could pay her for sex. "He had enquired politely about purchasing the body I willingly sold" - mm, so romantic and not predatory, romanticism at its finest.
- Annie is trying to win her fiance back and she has a thought that perhaps she should not be a prostitute in that case, but she couldn't find any other job, because "I had no money, and no other skill". When Davian asks her if she enjoyed being a prostitute for a god, she says "sometimes" - so that is her relationship with the idea. But wait, there's more...
- "And if I offered you a gold, what then?"
"To not work?"
"To work."
Hello?? She ended up not taking the money (we'll come back to that too), but in what world would I root for romance with a man who is willing to pay a woman to rent her body?
- ""Fuck. You don't have to-"
No part of me slowed. This was the Ekrissian way, the Ekrissian gift. I choked and swirled my tongue and moved even faster"
Again. Very culty and scary to think of your upbringing and "tutelage" you received after being trained by a brothel (I mean, House of Love) at the age of 14??/??? The whole scene is creepy.
- "It was a relief, to be needed like this, to give someone what I had been trained to do" (...) "This was the moment I lived for as an Ekrissian. Staring up and knowing I had done my God's bidding, and done it well" - again, disturbing, would be very good grounds for Annie admitting how culty House of Love is, how much grooming they put her through. But that's not going to happen.
- Then she wants to leave to not give in further to the attraction between her and Davian. And Davian asks her if for a whole gold coin he only gets 15 minutes with an Ekrissian. She thinks, "He was right, I was being a coward by leaving now. One gold bought an entire evening in the house of Ekris. I could not claim this was some act in service to my God." - and did not accept the coin. But he still wanted to pay for sex?
- "When my friend brings a courtesan to a House like ours, I don't tend to assume it is for investigation" - oh, so does he have a habit of paying for sex?
- "It wasn't a conventional marriage, but they had known each other since they were children" and were very good friends. Well, he moved on from the loss of a friend pretty fast then! You might hope we get some more info on the nature of their relationship, but that's all. It's only said that there was no fire between them.
- Finally, Davian calls Annie out, saying a place for fucking strangers is not family, especially if your body is not yours even when you die. Davian calls Ekris Annie's owner. And...
- Annie acknowledges her religious trauma after about 87% of the book. She think about "the unsettling seclusion of the Ekrissian House; I had lost the unerring belief in human goodness and the power of love to conquer all"...
- ... and then Annie thanks her pimp (sorry, Ekris) for choosing her and for the love he gave her (?)
- She dislikes Ekris for sheltering her from the world and not the utter exploitation and grooming. And then she hates him when she learns he saved her, but let her bestie die. But a few seconds ago she was grateful for his love, like...
- Annie finally has some self-aware thoughts, but only towards Ekris. "I had chosen to live a life without Ekris' control; without the rules and restrictions I had been subjected to for ten years. If I had stayed with him, I knew I would have ended my own life before my fortieth year to join his harem. I would have lived forever in that cycle of patrons, red dresses and veils, harsh tutelage and a single day of strawberry tarts" and "In his House, people would treat me as something other than Annie (...) As this untouchable desirable thing. A concept. An Ekrissian, not a human" - but she never blames her madams who run brothels. I'll come back to it in a second.
- Then it turns out Davian's wife is probably not even fully gone. And we don't really know a lot about the nature of their relationship, so it's kinda awkward.

So, taking all of the above into consideration, I don't really understand the entire subplot of her being a prostitute. It also seems like a wasted opportunity of sorts.
1) Annie never sleeps with anyone for money throughout this entire book. So she doesn't get info from anyone this way, she doesn't need her past to solve the murder, other than her lie detection gift (which could have been a gift from other god in that case, why push Ekris?) and flirting.
2) She doesn't have any sexual trauma. She doesn't blame either madam - Talia (the Leader of the House of Love) or Yona (the madam of the brothel she worked for like one chapter). Annie sees Yona as a good person (because she apparently believes ethical prostitution exists and lets her girls refuse a man), even though Yona was the one who took a 14-year-old child to be raised by a brothel (the House of Love) so she could become a courtesan. Talia is shown positively too, despite grooming children. Annie doesn't acknowledge that, and neither do other characters.
3) I wish Ekrissians really had any culty vibes. Because, sure, the concept of this religion is culty, but truly no one tries to punish Annie for leaving. She left, period. No one is trying to hunt her, get her back. Kill her for it. The cultiest of all is just Ekris, who marks Annie again as his devotee without her consent. I wish the author went harder with the culty vibes, as it could blend really intestingly with the prostitution aspect.

All in all, the book builds a solid world inspired by ancient Greece with a creative new religious system. It is definitely a better read as a fantastical murder mystery with sex scenes rather than romantasy.

To end this, shoutout to my two favorite characters, Wrath and Carnage <3 <3 Sending them lots of pets and pots to knock over <3 <3

WOW, this is great. When the ARC hit my email I had so many other books I planned to read first, but decided to just take a peek at chapter 1....and then I just couldn't stop. I already knew from To Touch a Silent Fury that this author is a great writer and has such a creative brain, and this book just proved it more!

What I liked:
- This story is so creative and fresh. It has aspects of other romantasys, but it never felt like a book I had read 5 times before. Its a murder mystery with gods. Nothing particularly surprising happened, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it unravel.
- The world was interesting, fresh and creative. I have about 500 questions, but at the same time feel like I have a thorough understanding of the world.
- I really like how the role the magic played. It magic is subtle, but melds in perfectly with the murder mystery plot and characters lives to make things interesting.
- This may be one of my favorite character growths for a FMC. I assumed what her path would look like in the book in the beginning, but seeing it unfold was just so lovely to read. It was impossible for me to relate to the FMC in the beginning, her people pleasing mindset frustrating to someone who is not, but the payoff is so worth it. She just slowly gains her confidence one chapter at a time. The book is dedicated to people pleasers, and I certainly see why. I felt the FMC is the strongest part of the book.

Not negatives, just observations:
- I would have liked a little more of the MMC. Maybe even a chapter or two from his POV. He makes some decisions and declarations in the end that partially make sense, but also partially didn't. I think a few POV chapters from him would have really strengthened our understanding of his resolve at the end. Maybe its just me, but some of his explanations and declarations felt a bit weak based on our time with him in the book---this is vague to not spoil. Basically I think boosting his character a bit would only help the end.

- This book could have been 100 pages longer and I would have still devoured it. I constantly wanted more. More of the world, more of the side characters, more of the gods and their devotees, more of everything.

And finally, is this a standalone?!?! I need to know what happens next!!
Dear lovely author, please let us know ASAP, thank you.

Giant thanks to the author for this ARC. It was truly a pleasure to read. Now please give me more Annie.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ 4 Stars (ARC Review)

I’ve had the pleasure of reading R.A. Sandpiper’s work before, so I went into The Faithful Fallen completely blind. At this point, I think that’s the best way to experience their books, and once again, I wasn’t disappointed.

This is the kind of story that stays with you after you finish it.

At its heart, The Faithful Fallen is more than a romantasy or a murder mystery. It’s a story about losing your purpose, questioning everything you once believed, and finding yourself in the aftermath. Annie’s journey from certainty to uncertainty, from devotion to self discovery, was what resonated with me most.

The world building was one of my favorite parts. The Greek inspired pantheon felt fresh and thoughtfully crafted, and each House had its own identity that made the world feel immersive without becoming overwhelming. It’s always refreshing to find fantasy that explores religion and faith in a way that feels integral to both the world and the characters.

The mystery kept me turning pages. There were enough red herrings, twists, and unexpected reveals that I never felt completely confident in my theories. Every time I thought I had figured it out, the story managed to surprise me.

I also appreciated that the romance never overshadowed the larger story. Instead, it complemented Annie’s personal journey and the mystery unfolding around her. Everything felt interconnected rather than existing for the sake of romance alone.

If I had one small criticism, it would be that I occasionally wanted to spend a little more time with the characters during some of the emotional moments. There were scenes that hit hard, and I found myself wishing they lingered just a little longer before moving the story forward.

Overall, this was a captivating blend of romantasy, murder mystery, mythology, and self discovery. It’s emotional without being overly heavy, mysterious without becoming convoluted, and filled with enough twists to keep you guessing until the end.

If you enjoy layered fantasy worlds, compelling mysteries, and stories about rebuilding yourself after everything falls apart, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Thank you to R.A. Sandpiper for the ARC. I’m already looking forward to seeing where this series goes next.

I absolutely adored To Touch a Silent Fury when I finished it 2 days ago, and I instantly wanted more R.A. Sandpiper in my life, so I dove straight into the ARC of The Fallen Faithful yesterday! These two books aren't part of the same series but that same magic is there which had me devouring them. It's that magic touch which has firmly cemented Sandpiper as an autobuy author for me!

I'm always shouting over on Instagram about how much I love genre hybrids, like mysteries set in fantasy worlds so I jumped at requesting this ARC as soon as I saw the blurb. And I'm so glad I did, because The Fallen Faithful is a fantastic mystery set in an interesting fantasy world focused on worshippers' service to a pantheon of Gods. There's also a beautiful romance here too. The author explained on a recent Instagram post that this book is 50% romance, 25% fantasy and 25% mystery. The combination of those three elements was perfect, and everything is integrated flawlessly.

I did go into The Fallen Faithful thinking it was a standalone, but given the ending, I think there has to be a sequel! HAS TO, surely?? I need there to be a sequel so badly, because this book definitely leaves Annie and Davian in a HFN-but-not-for-much-longer situation.

The Fallen Faithful will be going onto Kindle Unlimited when it releases and I highly recommend picking it up on there if you have KU, or otherwise borrowing or buying it, because it is SO good!

ARC, my thoughts are my own. I actually already pre ordered the physical copy for my own coooooins.

Before I started reading I was a bit scared that my long, awful reading slump would spill over onto my reading experience of this book. But fear not! Instead, Sandpiper dragged me out of the deepest parts of reading slumps and threw me into the world of "shit, I don't want to do anything else than read this book". I should never have questioned your power, and I never will again.

I really enjoyed the way we got a murder mystery romance set in a fantasy world, with a lot of culty vibes. The book balances the genres very well, and while the romance plot does take up more space than the other two, I was kept very interested in the mystery until the very last page. I read this at the same time as my friend and there were a lot of theories and eye emojis sent between us. And I still ended up surprised several times. And heartbroken (also several times).

No one writes yearning like Sandpiper and I quickly ended up loving Davian. I am usually a sucker for dual POV but I loved seeing him from Annie's perspective. I wouldn't mind a second book with more of their adventures but I also loved it as it was. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I finished it.

In short: another banger from Sandpiper. Davian is on my wish list for Christmas. Amazing culty and sexy vibes (sometimes at the same time). Read if you are cool.

Annie was an acolyte for the god of love, Ekris, but when she asked to leave the service to marry her fiance, Ekris’ permission had a twist. Now her fiance doesn’t know who Annie is, and she is no longer welcome back at the temple. Trying to find her way, she is approached by Davian, a sinister, masked follower of the god of death and pain. He wants Annie’s help in solving the murder of his wife. As the two start to investigate, a larger plot with multiple murders comes to light. Can Annie stop who’s at the center of it all before it’s too late?

Annie is a surprisingly soft and caring protagonist. She truly wants to please all those around her, which has made her an excellent follower of Ekris. She finds Davian to be incredibly attractive, to the point that she worries that he may be a threat to her ability to regain her place in the temple. However as she learns more about life outside the temple, she finds that she actually is more capable and wants more out of life than she realized. Her growth is quiet and a little understated but incredibly powerful.

The Faithful Fallen is a fast paced romantasy murder mystery taking place in a fully realized world with a ten god pantheon that is very active with the general population. Characters are multidimensional and nuanced, often with complicated relationships. A book that will suck you in and leave you restless for more.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved this book! I read the whole thing in two sittings whilst on holiday (the pacing was great). It took me out of a reading slump with romantasy as it felt so unique to a lot of books currently being sold. I absolutely love this authors style of writing and this book was no different - the main character, Annie, was so thoughtfully fleshed out and you go on a real journey with her throughout the book.

Grief is a big topic in this book and the author navigated it so well, in some books I feel like you get taken out of the story when you think that the character behaves oddly and I particularly think this when they deal with grief - it’s often moved on from too quickly in my opinion. But R A Sandpiper gets it perfect here, with both main characters.

I loved the set up of the different houses for the gods and how the lore unfurls gradually throughout. I’m excited to know more about the world in book 2 (if we get one!!!) as I think there is so far you can go and in so many directions with this set-up!! You are still learning about the world up to the very last page which is so refreshing and keeps things entertaining. Unsure if there will be a second book - there is certainly a story left to tell with the ending…

Overall I found it a really fun read that also had lots of depth, I can’t wait for the sequel!!!

I received an ARC of this book.

This book is a murder mystery set in a world inspired by Ancient Greece.
I really enjoyed reading this story! The world and the religious system feel familiar because of what they are inspired by, but different enough to be interesting. The gods and houses are inspired by Greek mythology, but not the same, which leaves something to be discovered.

The characters were also enjoyable! I liked that the FMC wasn’t the badass warrior type who is smarter, stronger and more beautiful than anyone else. Annie has flaws and is aware of them and evolves to accept them throughout the story without losing who she is.

Davian seemed like the stereotypical dark and mysterious MMC at first, but had a surprising amount of depth to him and a backstory that made him feel authentic.

The romance aspect of the story had a gradual, slow build without feeling like it was being dragged out.

My favourite part of the story was the murder mystery. I liked how the clues were given through the story and that there were some twists and turns, but they weren’t too out there. They felt natural and not forced. I enjoyed the culty aspect of the mystery and the open ending! I liked that the FMC was allowed to be a little bit selfish and not willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good!

Thank you to R.A. Sandpiper for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I went into this one not quite knowing what to expect, and I have to admit, the first chapter took me a little bit to settle into. The sentence structure and rhythm felt a little different from what I’m used to, and I found myself re-reading a few lines. But once I got past that initial chapter, the writing flowed so much more naturally for me and then I was hooked.

The story pulled me in with its mystery, unique world building, mythology, and characters who turned out to be much more layered than I initially expected. I especially loved the way the story explored the different gods and what their followers actually stood for. Some things weren’t quite what they appeared to be at first, which kept me curious and guessing.

What really surprised me was how difficult this book became to put down. What started as a story I was cautiously settling into turned into one where I kept telling myself, “Just one more chapter.” 😂

I loved watching the relationships and mysteries unfold, and while the main storyline reaches a satisfying point, the ending definitely left me feeling like there is so much more to this world and these characters. I’d also like to add that the 🌶️ was just right!

And yes… I am officially invested in the next book.

ARC 4.75⭐️

I feel so lucky to receive this ARC from Sandpiper. I’ve been in a bit of a weird reading slump where I just don’t know what I’m in the mood for and end up not reading at all. Well, apparently I was in the mood for a murder mystery fantasy romance.

This book was everything. It had me from the first page with its culty vibes and witty quips. I loved the mystery of it all and kept throwing theories at my friend who also received an ARC. Annie and Davian are both fantastic MCs, and I absolutely adored Fella and her story. I was so invested with the world building and the gods.

The ending wasn’t quite for me. Without going into any detail, it was a great ending to a fantastic book, but it just didn’t leave me feeling satisfied (which I guess is also sort of the point if I’m being honest).

All in all, this was an amazing read. The romance, the mystery, the lore on the Gods, the friendships. The thing I love about Sandpiper, besides her way with words, is that she has a way to make her books unique. Whether it’s the plot, the magic or the world building, I never have the feeling I’ve read it before when it comes to any of her books.

I absolutely loved it and have already preordered a hard copy.

I knew this would be a 5 star read for me from the first few chapters. And honestly who's surprised?! Every single thing R.A. Sandpiper writes, I devour.

A murder mystery romantasy with gods, secrets, tension, and a swoon worthy MMC.

This story was SO creative and lush. It's so original and felt like a breath of fresh air. The world is gritty, well fleshed out, and intricate.

I loved the characters in this (especially the 2 cats). No but seriously, Annie is one of my favorite FMC's of all time and I loved seeing her growth & character evolution. And I am obsessed with Davian, he's a tortured soul who's a little broody and a huge masochist.

I am never getting over that ending, I am in serious PAIN and although this book isn't even out yet, I'm desperate for the next installment.

The mystery aspect of this was pretty easy to solve IMO, I caught on to it quickly. But I still liked seeing everything unravel. I do wish this was a dual POV, or that we at least got just a couple chapters from the MMC, but I'm hoping there might be some bonus chapters released in the future...

Huge thank you to the author for selecting me to be an ARC reader, I had the best time <3

This one took me a little bit to get into—I thought the start was a little slow going—but once it picked up, I was hooked. The murder mystery was so well done and genuinely kept me guessing. Every time I thought I had figured out what was going on, something else had me questioning everything again.

I absolutely loved Annie and Davian. Their story, the mystery surrounding them, and the whole Greek-inspired world of gods and Houses worked together so well. There’s romance, spice, murder, secrets, heartbreak, and plenty of what the hell is actually happening?! moments.

And the yearning?! Absolute chef’s kiss. 🤌 The tension and longing had me kicking my feet like a lovesick girl. I’m a sucker for good yearning, and this book DELIVERED.

The slower beginning is really the only thing keeping this from being a full 5 stars for me, because by the time I got into it, I did not want to put it down.

4.5 stars — loved, loved, LOVED this one. If you like romantasy with spice and an actual murder mystery that keeps you guessing, definitely add this to your TBR.

I struggled just a little with this at first simply because I did not like the MMC I’m searching for my wife’s murderer vibe while also hitting on the woman I’m asking to help me solve the mystery. But I love this author and I kept reading because otherwise the premise was interesting to me. As usual, she delivered a well written and unique story. The tale follows Annie, a FMC who is a devotee of the God of Love, who chooses to leave her temple for her mortal lover Robar. However, when she chooses to leave her God Ekris makes Robar forget Annie and makes it so she must win his love all over again if she wants them to be together. Annie quickly finds that Robar was not who he seemed and her dreams of love and a life with him may be doomed. As she struggles to cope with her new life she meets MMC Davian who is searching for his wife’s killer. Davian convinces Annie to help him solve the murder but as they delve further and further into it they soon realize that there is far more going on and something sinister is happening to the devotees of the gods. They must come together to stop the threat or else.

Thank you to the author for a ARC!

I absolutely devoured this book. It’s been a long time since a book has kept me up late and I had to force myself to put it down and sleep. However, I don’t expect much else from R A Sandpiper.
Being with Annie through her growth and journey was heart warming and gut wrenching all at once. I laughed, I cried, I grieved, I bit my lip... 👀. The reader is immediately brought into a world of gods and games with its very own unique feel and surprising turns. As usual, the magic systems R A Sandpiper has in her head are refreshing and new, with attention to detail and truths to be uncovered. Which naturally leads to our MMC, Davian. My perfectly dark, brooding, incredibly tall and muscular, moody baby Davian. The banter between the characters had me giggling and kicking my feet in time with Annie. The ending had me in shambles, and I’m unsure if this is meant to be a standalone or if we are getting a second book, but it’s the perfect balance of settled and cliffhanger that I would be happy either way. My jaw was on the floor and has yet to be picked up. Read this book! Now!

I blew through this book in less than a day, stunning.
Sandpiper has been an auto buy author for me ever since I stumbled across TTASF (if you haven't read it what are you doing?!) and I was thrilled to be sent an arc for this book.

The writing is top tier, and she creates vivid worlds with unique magic systems that are simple to follow and so different from the usual. Absolutely loved the characters and their journeys, and was genuinely guessing at the twists the whole way(mostly incorrectly but hey!)
I love a book that can keep me guessing and the writing is just perfection. This was a perfect standalone that encaptured a fabulous MMC and ridiculously perfect yearning. The dialogue had me kicking my feet at times (metaphorically obviously there's a cat on my lap), and I breezed through this at a ridiculous speed. This has just cemented that I will read anything Sandpiper writes. Cannot recommend this or her other books enough, a perfect break from the usual fantasy romance plots I rinse and repeat.

A murder mystery set in a world loosely inspired by Ancient Greece and its pantheon. A woman whose worldview was shaped by the god she was devoted to. A man shaped not only by gods, but by his grief and trauma. A perfect setting for an intriguing fantasy filled with love, lust, and loss. And an ending that will, one hopes, open the doors for the continuation of this story.

The Fallen Faithful is not for the faint of heart. It is dark, and it explores dark themes, among them religious trauma and the deconstruction of religious beliefs. It explores the pain, the hurt, and the grief. It digs deep into the darker parts of the human soul and mind, often misguided by gods. And yet, love shines, even in the darkest of times. Though their beginning was far from conventional, the leads eventually find their way forward. And I truly believe love will conquer when the time comes for the final reckoning.

Thank you, R.A. Sandpiper, for allowing me to read an early copy of this story. It's an honor I won't take lightly.

ADVANCED READER COPY

I finished this book in less than a day and it got me out of a reading slump.
Annie's growth and journey was amazing, the way she evolves, her opinions and thoughts changing with everything she lives through, it's writing so well that it doesn't seem rushed or without explanation. The story made me laugh, cry, I grieved with the characters. The plot is interesting, fun and definitely makes you think, which I love.
I have to say that the grief in this book was definitely well portrayed, you definitely felt it and understood why the characters were acting that way. I've read so many books where they're just sad for one day and then over it the next, which puts me off because it's not like that. Grief is something you carry with you every single day.

Really enjoyed this book, I'm sad it's a standalone since the ending was bittersweet, but I'm looking forward to reading more of the author's books!

I absolutely loved To Touch a Silent Fury and looked forward to reading more from this author. I was grateful to have been selected to receive an eARC of her newest book. I absolutely loved it! Two of my favorite genres - romantasy and a murder mystery were brought together seamlessly, which resulted in a unique, captivating book! I love the writing style. My biggest pet peeve is when authors place characters in a different world/time, but the language reads like teenagers were plucked from 2026 and plopped into a fantasy setting. This is not the case with this author - the use of modern slang is kept to an absolute minimum, while still being easy to read. The character growth and development of the romance felt natural and not too rushed. The only lingering question I have is whether or not this is a standalone or part of a duology. The ending is left a bit open as to what happens next, but it could definitely end there and leave the rest up to the readers' imagination.

Romance, murder, mystery… This book had a little bit of everything, with inspiration from ancient Greece, a unique storyline, and plenty of encounters that kept me engaged and lead me to read the entirety in one day.

The mystery was definitely one of my favorite parts. There were so many layers to the plot, and I loved slowly piecing things together while trying to figure out what was really going on. It was a storyline I hadn’t come across before, which made it even more intriguing. Some parts did feel like they moved a little too quickly for me, but overall, this was such an addictive and captivating read!

After reading To Touch a Silent Fury by the same author (which was exquisite), I had high hopes for this one, and it absolutely delivered.

Thank you so much to the author for giving me an ARC of this fantastic book, which will be out on September 23! 🏛️

She did it again folks! Huge thank you to the author for this ARC! When she gave us the blurb and the option to vote on another story while TTASF was going thru things, I was immediately drawn to this one. I love how familiar yet separate this world is, with a Greek pantheon-inspired worship. I also absolutely adore Annie as a character. She is entirely too relatable as a people pleaser, and the fact that she cannot resist doing all the things she knows she shouldn’t (but we’re so happy she did them haha). The murder mystery aspect of this book was so fun too. I totally missed out on some of the hints that were dropped along the way, but had my own theories about who was who (iykyk). So thoroughly pleased with this read and so so happy I have already pre-ordered a signed copy of the hardback!

Thank you R.A. Sandpiper for this eARC!

4.5✨ A murder mystery/fantasy with religion and reluctantish allies.
Annie is devoted to her god and the life she lives to please him. Until she’s cast out for making a deal with him. Her betrothed doesn’t remember her and she’s lost af. Then she meets a man who wears a half mask phantom of the opera style and he loves pain. Also his wife is dead.
Annie and Davian work together to solve the murders and it’s not quite what it seems.
I loved the premise of this book, the plot, the religion and gods, Annie trying to figure herself out and what she wants in life. I think book 2 is going to be a good time, even though I’m horrified for it.
I do think the love part of this moved a little quickly but that’s about it.

3.8 stars

This was a good read overall and better written than most self-published novels. The main characters have a fair amount of emotional complexity and strong chemistry. The murder mystery at the centre of the novel was also plausibly compelling as well as the emotional fallout.
Where the novel fell short for me was in terms of the world-building. At the start of the novel, it seemed like Craetos was going to be a version of Ancient Greece/Rome, but as the story progressed, there were things like character names, balls and corsets, which seemed out of place considering how strong the Graeco-Roman influence was. As a reader, I couldn’t tell how relatively modern European/English influences added to the narrative or to the world. If anything, it was distracting.

**ARC review**

And no notes. Wow.

This book had me hooked right from the start. We have a people pleasing FMC, devoted to making people feel loved and an MMC devoted to pain who wears a mask. Oh and there’s an INCREDIBLE slow burn with lots of yearning. Need I say more?

But on a more serious note, the writing in this book was phenomenal. The imagery it created in my mind really helped me picture not only the characters and the world, but the events that were unfolding. Not only that but it’s such a unique setting, and I absolutely loved the cult-like feel of the different houses. The murder mystery aspect is also carried out perfectly.

I’m not sure if this is a standalone or if there’s going to be another book, but I will take all of Annie and Davian I can get.

Arc reader. My first arc e book, thank you.
I really loved this & fell into it so easily. I enjoyed the writing style & the intrigue. It's different to other fantasy books & similar in style to authors previous book. I enjoyed the Greek ideas & imagery. It is not for the squeamish & has lots of spice & yearning/anguish. I did not enjoy the ending as much, it was unexpected & I wished for more in their relationship especially after her moral battles with her god & her internal struggle. I did yearn for the ending to contain more spice as we had waited so long & there was no action. It does lend itself to a part 2 story if wanted. I read this quickly & easily & really enjoy this author as a new find.

This story has an interesting premise- devotees to different gods thats a bit cult like, murder-mystery and romance.
However it did seem a bit low stakes, and the MMC immediately wanting to hook up with Annie, when his wife was murdered just 3 months ago, and they were childhood friends on top, even if his God is helping to manage the pain of his grief, he moved on remarkably fast.

I enjoyed reveal of the perpetrator and the reasons for doing what he did, it made me feel a bit sympathetic. The descriptions of the ritual, with the symbols i could picture clearly. I liked the ending and how they have a somewhat of a happy ending for a while.

Rachel didn’t let down once again! I knew this one would be a favorite one from the initial dedication.
If there ever was a surreal well done fantasy depiction of people pleasers, this was it! And let me tell you that hit deep!
I will always love being in the mind of her characters, with such raw emotions and such a clear path of thought!
I also applaude the author for making every love story unique, the feelings and circumstances made every time feel special and one of a kind.
In the end especially, I cannot wait to see how those feelings develop.

I loved this book and I loved the characters and the world was fascinating and I loved that the storyline was so different to anything that I have read before.
I especially liked all the different gods and the devotees with different secrets they have.
My only complaint was I did not like the ending of this book maybe if there was a second book it would make it better as there was no kind of happy ending as such it left you wondering what happens to them, what’s next for them but with all that said I did enjoy this book very much and gave it 5⭐️s.

A refreshingly unique read, blending a dark murder mystery with mythic fantasy. Instead of just rehashing standard Greek myths, the worldbuilding creates an originality with its own distinct gods, lore, and heavy atmosphere. Annie teaming up with a masked detective to untangle ritualistic murders made for a really cool, gritty setup. The pacing of the investigation slowed down a bit in the middle, but the inventive concept and great side characters (Wrath and Carnage stole the show) made this a solid 4 star read.

A beautiful love story with a little bit of sprinkled yearning, spice and trauma coupled with meddling Gods and murder mystery!

- 1st person POV
- Gods who actually talk with their devotees
- love story that has bickering, yearing and respect

As a reader, who has love for both fantasy romance and crime fic, this book was so captivating and interesting.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every book from R. A. Sandpiper to date and this one was no exception. I have been hooked and caught on another ongoing series.

Another amazing story from R.A.Sandpiper. I am in love with the world, the devotees, the characters and the plot. A really refreshing change from the usual romantasy; intrigue, twists and turns, actions and feelings that feel rooted in how 'normal' people would act which is something I really love about her writing. Thoughtful, fallible characters who are relatable.
Let the reading slump begin because I just want to be back in Dytho!
