I absolutely loved this book, read it cover to cover and was entranced by every twist and turn that it took. I currently have REVIEW copies of this great book for those interested in reading and reviewing it. Send me a PM.
If you love a book that really messes with your head, you can't go past this one. This is very sophisticated writing, not just because it's got thrills, reveals, twists and a totally brilliant ending, but because everything else is done to build plot, explore and reveal characters, set the mood and send you into a whirl.
Just when you thought you had it all worked out..wham!
I first came across Frank's first brilliant psychological thriller Find Virgil when I read and reviewed it last year and rated that one five stars also. Again, a book, like this one that had me divided as a reader as to where I stood in relation to the characters (was I going to take sides?), what I thought the book as about and of course the silly idea of trying to guess what came next.
Frank takes you on a journey, a true story teller. If you just expect empty pretty glitter, look elsewhere, Frank gives you depth in his books. Grit and tackling some complex issues people face in everyday life and putting a spin on it all. How far will a person go?
It truly kept me on my toes as the plot unraveled. Both characters Lock and Natalie are brilliantly flawed and messed up, therefore making the book very interesting as I indulged in "people watching" as I read, trying to get inside both heads or even to get a turn on the chess game they enjoy playing so much. Nothing will ever be the same again for either of them. Ever.

This book left me and had me conflicted so much. I powered through this book, inhaled and gasped at every brilliant reveal and twist. Don't be alarmed or worried if after truly exciting moments the book seems to cruise for a while, no it's not a dud. What the author is doing is cleverly giving us background, building the characters and plot with great detail. This makes the twists as good as they are.
I am a real fan of Frank's writing. I like his plots, characters never feel let down as a reader. In a nutshell? It's really bloody good and Frank is an author to watch. I read many books in the last year by bestselling authors and his book was better than a lot of them. This is how excited I get.

'Words are just warm sounds that come out of your mouth'
This quote really stuck with me when I read it and I even bookmarked it for later contemplation. It was about 3/4 of the way through when it hit me why it spoke to me...Those words apply to every one of the 3 main characters in this book- This book is going to mess with your head...big time!
It's the oldest story in the book. We've heard about it on TV, read it in the newspaper, some have even experienced personally. Lonely single man (Lock) who longs for what is just out of reach- a family. He doesn't care how he gets it. He can love any child, regardless of who's it is. He has enough love to go around and any woman would be proud to have him as her husband. But for some reason this life he craves continues to elude him. Enter the lovely yet distressed Natalie, who is stuck in a loveless marriage to a very wealthy, but neglectful husband. Or is he?
Even though I thought I knew how this was going to play, it didn't stop me from silently yelling 'NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!' to the naive and needy Lock.
My hats off to the author for writing a great twisted tale that will stay with you long after it's over. I highly recommend this enjoyable read to all fiction lovers!
My thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Yes, I have periods of regret, but most of the time, I'm excited. Not sure what my next move is, but I know I'm optimistic as hell. I've left a lot of negative things behind. I'm looking forward." Who has not said similar words in their life at one time or another - or knew somebody who has? How did things work out? Social service agency meets laws enforcement agency in this page turning psychological crime novel, with a group of complex characters. You'll take a roller coaster ride to the land of "THIS IS IT".
All the main characters are 'optimistic' about looking forward. Lock Gilkenney, is executive director of Brandywine County Child Protective Services agency. He occasionally has cravings for alcohol and cocaine, but has been to AA meeting, has acquired skills and uses them. His job is fulfilling, and he feels rewarded helping others every day. He wants nothing more than to have a happy family.
Natalie Mannheim, green tea and fresh blueberries girl, with "mellow yoga chant" as her ringtone, wants what she wants.....mostly to have lots of money. Borderline personality disorder, narcissistic, or just a manipulative bad seed, ... She's a character readers love to have strong opinions about. She could win the blue ribbon for being 'Push-your-buttons' character. Nasty yoga girl!
Lock could take that 2nd place ribbon for 'push-your-buttons' character. The reader feels a range of emotions for him. At times we are rooting for him - as we see his heart and passion - other times we are yelling at the guy to wake up and not be such an asshole whimp.
BOTH Lock and Natalie can drive a reader bonkers in very different ways. ---making great - fun - reading enjoyment.
Love, lies, and murder...are running themes...mixed with a deep sense of shame, and regret. Regret and shame are sensitive words - issues most of us rather not look at in our own lives...so we can thank the author, Frank Freudberg for taking on difficult topics... involving children to boot...putting together a story that hooks us - twists us - and stimulates us.
Thank you Inside Job Media Pubishing, Netgalley, and Frank Fredberg
3.5 Stars. Ahhh psychological thrillers... My favourite of all genres!! I liked this new one from Frank Freudberg. It was well written and engaging.
Lock Gilkenney is a passionate child advocate. He works for the department of child services and responds to an anonymous complaint. When he gets there to investigate he is immediately attracted to the mother of the children Natalie. Natalie's husband Witt is trouble, causing lots of problems for Natalie and vindictively attempting to take the children from her. Natalie needs help, and Lock might just be able to give it to her. But unfortunately helping her will lead to Lock being dragged into a dark story of deceit, lies, betrayal and murder. All is not what it seems.
Baby Please Don't Go was written really well, easy to read and very easy to get addicted to. I really enjoyed the first half, it was fascinating and exciting. I was desperate to know what was going to happen! Unfortunately the second half fell a bit flat for me. I didn't enjoy it as much as the first half. However It was still a good read! It just lacked the excitement, thrill and mystery of the first half.
The characters. Man, what can I say?? Talk about STUFFED UP!! Lock, lovely lock with his MANY demons. So vulnerable. I felt for him so much, especially in the first half of the book. By the second half however I was a bit sick of his naivety. I was getting frustrated by his weakness and felt like his character didn't really do much developing through the book. However he was so damaged, that perhaps there was no way for him to grow.
Natalie... WOW! Makes Amy from Gone Girl look like a saint! Hats off to the author for writing one of the most selfish, screwed up human being I have ever read about! I absolutely loved how AWFUL she was! Loved to hate her! I liked all the other characters, and there weren't too many of them which was really refreshing.
I just found it such a shame about the second half. It just lost momentum. All the characters started to become totally unbelievable and I totally lost compassion and empathy for Lock. I wasn't a big fan of the ending either. it didn't really have any resolution of sorts, it just sort of ended.
Would I recommend it?
If you like psychological thrillers with extremely messed up characters, absolutely. It was worth reading!
Big thanks to Maxine from Booklover Catlady Publicity and the author for a copy of Baby Please Don't Go for me to review.
I would like to thank author Frank Freudberg, Maxine of Booklover Catlady Publicity, Net Galley, and Inside Job Media for gifting me a copy of this novel in exchange for an unbiased review.
I didn’t know what to expect from this book as I went into it essentially blind, having read the blurb several months previously. All I recalled was that it was a suspense novel. And what a suspense novel it is!
There is a lot to like here. I was most impressed with Mr. Freudberg’s complex characterization. It is fascinating to see the difference in people’s deepest needs and desires and how far they are willing to go to achieve them. Furthermore, the story brings out the fact that essentially everyone has their breaking point where they cannot help but cross the line if they want something bad enough. We also observe repentance and how difficult that can be to maintain. This is not a thriller, but a story that engages us with a steady flow of foreboding punctuated with unexpected twists. The reader is not certain whom to trust at any given time. I felt I was watching this tale play out while sitting on eggshells, waiting for something horrible to happen. I was riveted by the story, though at times I wished I could cover my eyes and read at the same time.
The only thing that disappointed me was the ending. I was at 99% and thinking, is there going to be a cliffhanger here? No, the book ended with a short epilogue, which left me desperately wanting to be shown, not told in just a few sentences, what happened between point A (beginning of 99%) and point B (at 100%). Shoot, Mr. Freudberg, couldn’t you have filled in the story there?
I do have to say, I loved this book up until the epilogue. I know from reading some of the reviews that I am in the minority with my view of the ending. Therefore, I find it easy to recommend this book to all lovers of suspense. As for me, I look forward to reading more from Mr. Freudberg.
“Oh what tangled webs we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”
“Baby Please Don’t Go” by Frank Freudberg is a psychological thriller that definitely is a page turner and takes the reader through a whole range of emotions. I loved this book! It is a definite winner, and has all the elements to satisfy a reader.
This story is about a recovering alcoholic whose only desire in his life- is a family, which he finds through his job…but at a hefty price! This book shows how good intentions can go horribly wrong and set off an unfortunate set of events.
Lock is a senior investigator at Child Protective Services Agency (CPS), a social services agency. Lock knew what it felt like to be neglected and longed for children to make his life complete, caring for them, to provide for everything they needed. Abner, (Abby) was his boss at work, but so much more…his friend, mentor and AA sponsor, for his battle with cocaine and alcohol. Abby brought him to work to get clean and sober, and give him a purpose in life. There had been relapses, but he stuck to the program. Now after a year of sobriety and a job and profession he loved, life was better.
An anonymous report of neglect/child abuse comes in. Lock is assigned to the case and finds the kids in good health, no signs of abuse, bruising etc. Lock concludes the report was fake, possibly part of a scheme to make Natalie Mannheim, the kids’ mother to look bad in an upcoming divorce trial.
But we soon learn that Natalie, “the manipulator” needs Lock’s expertise to help her win custody of a million dollar divorce settlement. But Lock soon realizes she needs his assistance, to give ideas how to build a good custody case.
For Lock, Natalie was like an addition from his past, like gambling, cocaine or booze. She was determined to get him. But he can’t get her out of his head. “Lock was being squeezed by a sociopath he was in love with.”
This is a character-driven novel, and the flawed characters come completely alive, thanks to the talented author. It’s funny how an author can push the reader to love or hate a character. I definitely felt these emotions, and it speaks for the talent of the author.
This is a story of love, lies, and murder, and the path that Lock takes will definitely grab your attention. I loved this story and am definitely looking forward to reading the author's previous book, “Find Virgil”, inside the mind of a serial killer.
“Baby Please Don't Go” is engaging, believable and impossible to put down. Many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. A definite winner and an author with a very promising future.
“Then I discovered that being related is no guarantee of love!”
----Stieg Larsson
Frank Freudberg, an American novelist, journalist and ghostwriter, pens his latest psychological thriller, Baby Please Don't Go , that accounts a heart-stopping and thoroughly intensifying tale about a recovering alcoholic who only desired for one thing in his life- a family, which he gets through his job, only to find out that he has to pay a hefty price to be happy again with a family.
Synopsis:
Lock is a dedicated investigator at Child Protective Services. An anonymous report of neglect comes in. He responds and finds the kids in good health. Lock concludes the report was a ruse, possibly part of a scheme to make Natalie Mannheim—the kids’ mother—look bad in an upcoming divorce trial.
Natalie needs Lock’s expertise to help her win custody—and a multi-million-dollar divorce settlement. He realizes she doesn't have a prayer in court against her shrewd husband, and only Lock can help her now.
Lock knows all about addiction, and he’s aware of the powerful hold Natalie has on him. But he can’t get her out of his head. Lock is caught between his commitment to take the high road and his burning desire to have a family. In this story of love, lust, deceit and murder, what Lock chooses to do will grab your imagination and never let go.
Lock's job as an investigator at Child Protective Services doesn't guarantee to provide him much happiness in his life, but it certainly ensures that he can be closer to one of the few things he loves the most- small children. And why? Because it's his only dream/desire/wish in his life to have a family of his own- a small sweet loving family.
Lock's wish almost comes true when he gets a tip that some children at a particular household are being mistreated, thereby finding two little kids at the household of whom he gets very protective of. Eventually when he meets the beautiful, posh and manipulative mother of the kids, Natalie, who is in the middle of a bitter-divorce battle against her multi-millionaire husband, Lock can't think of having a such a great opportunity to own a family, only if he knew there are games and twists and Natalie herself was a user who can go at any lengths to become rich, even if that requires for Lock to commit any crime.
Honestly, I once again came across to such a book that hooked me right into the very heart of the story from the first page itself. And all thanks to Maxine for this great book recommendation. This book has so many, I would rather say millions of, moments which made me felt like "Christ! I did not see that coming at all" or at times, those twisting moments kicked hard on my guts. I rarely came across a book where both the positive as well as the negative characters left me enthralled.
The writing style of the author kept me mystified and engaged till the last page of the book. The fantastic as well as evocative prose of the storyline ensures that the readers are sure to feel sympathy as well as nostalgic and horrified all at the same time. The narrative style is layered with manipulations, mystery, twists that makes the book an arresting read for the readers. This book, in short, screams "DRAMA" in capital letters and with a genius story-teller like Frank, you won't be disappointed since the book will keep you on your edges till the very last page.
The characters are all strongly developed, and the author has sketched them as completely flawed as well as crippled with their prejudices, insecurities and desires. Two brilliant characters with an intense and inevitable attraction yet are vividly in contrast to each other's demeanor. Lock is sweet and innocent who dreams to have a loving family. Lock has a gruesome past where he had to fight lots of battle against himself (his addiction to drugs/alcohol), but now he is thoroughly reformed and wants to start living again.
Natalie is a shrewd character and the less I talk about her, the more she remains in the author's tightly wrapped twists. Natalie is clever and knows how to use people for her own benefit and to attain her whims and fancies, she can go at any length to achieve that. These two characters are so strikingly portrayed with such depth that it felt like I know Lock and Natalie for ages. And they leave an unforgettable essence even after the end of the story with their level of cruelty as well as dedication. The supporting characters are perfectly depicted in to the story and they are completely in tune with the main characters. Moreover every other character in the book builds up along with the progress of the story.
The mystery envelopes the storyline like a thick mist filled with suspense, actions, lies and trickery that never once leaves the room. The vivid visual imagery of every scenes helped me to see the story like it's happening right before my eyes. The twists are thrown at the right moment that are strong enough to throw me off my edges. I never ever imagined that the path to sanity can be so wrecking and dangerous. In a nutshell, I loved this story real crazily and am definitely looking forward in reading the author's previous book which is too a psychological thriller.
Verdict: I recommend every other crime fiction fans to read this exciting thriller.
Courtesy: Thanks Maxine for recommending as well as giving me an opportunity to read and review yet another gem in the world of thrillers.
I have had this one waiting to be read on my TBR list 'direct' from author.
I am so glad that I agreed to read it because it was so worth my while. You never know when you read a book from an unknown author quite what you are letting yourself in for, I say this because, as an Independent reviewer I do not like to give low stars so think long and hard before accepting a book to read and review.
This one didn't disappoint me, it had:
1: One of the subject matters that although is not nice to read about, its a fact and things happen.
2: A character that keeps you on your toes
3: GREAT story telling techniques that keep you from putting the book down bored.
4: Keeping me guessing and then seconding guessing.
Locke was seeming to me to be a strong character at first, but the more you get to know him, you see his chinks in his armor that meeting Natalie certainly made her sneaky beguiling way into.
Locke is an investigator at Child Protective Services, and that is how he comes upon the family and Natalie.
There is this 'pull' towards each other. There is no mistaking the sizzle.
But do not get me wrong, this is just a section of the book, its not all romance, definitely not.
Locke is first and foremost a dedicated Child Protection Officer. Children come first.
There is a past to Locke, he knows about drugs, he knows about over indulgence in alcohol, he's been there and has that particular T Shirt. He's worn it out.
He also has a past.
Locke would like nothing else but a loving family, kids of his own. Will he ever get that?
Let me quote:
ALL LOCK GILKENNEY WANTS IS A FAMILY.
BUT HE’LL HAVE TO CROSS THE LINE TO GET ONE.
This is a particularly enthralling story. How fine lines are crossed. How you can find yourself knee deep in something that goes against everything you stand for.
The twist within these pages were outstanding.
I've not read this authors other books, this is the first one I have read by him.
Frank Freudberg is a crafter of words. You can use words that make you stop and stand to attention. Many times this happened in this book. I loved it.
I have to thank the author for my copy and I need to say, just because my copy was given to me by the author never promises a high scoring review, I am honest in my feelings of how a book makes me 'feel' and this book made me want more of the same from this wonderful author.
Lock Gilkenney works for child protection services and desperately wants a family. While at work, he is called out to a home visit to investigate reports of maltreatment. At this visit Lock meets Natalie Mannheim and his life is changed forever. Natalie worms her way into Lock's heart and convinces him to do things he never would have imagined before.
This story has an interesting premise. Being a lover of thrillers and having an interest in child protection, this sounded like an interesting mix that appealed to me. I enjoyed the author's writing style and found it easy to read. At first I was really engaged with the story and found it difficult to put down. I was continually on edge with the way the plot developed, as it is quite a journey the author takes the reader on. Initially, I liked Lock and felt for him and his desire to do the right thing. However, after about 50% I found the story began to drag a little and I began to lose a bit of sympathy for Lock and the situations he found himself in. Even though the second half was less engaging to me, I did read until the end because I really wanted to know where Lock and Natalie finally ended up.
Overall I liked it and my rating is closer to 3.5 stars.
Thank you to the publisher via net galley for my copy to read and review.
WOW what an amazing read this is! Everytime I thought I knew where the story was going it totally turned out different. It made me scream out loud: NOOOOO Don’t listen!, OMG Don’t do it! Why are you so easy manipulated? Or are you not? I just could’t put it down.
All Lock Gilkenney wants is a family, but he’ll have to cross the line to get one.
Lock Gilkenney is one of the best investigator his boss/friend/tutor Abner (Abby) has working at Child Protective Services Agency. Abby is like a father to Lock. Lock’s biological father was an abusive alcoholist. Lock is also familiar with alchohol but he is sober for quite some time and still goes to AA meetings. When a report against the Mannheim family comes in, Lock responds and finds out that the kids are just fine. Natalie Mannheim tell’s Lock that the report came from her husband and his lawyer because he doesn’t want her to get any money after the divorce. Lock , who can’t get the goodlooking and very nice Natalie out of his head, wants to help her and comes up with a plan. Will it work out ok? And will Lock finally have the family he always wanted? I liked Lock, but I also found him naïve some times (made me wanna slap him). Abby is the kind of man that always gives you good advice. And first I liked Natalie, then hated her, then had sympathy for her and ended up hating her again.
Drinking, drunk driving, accident with a child involved are some of the keywords here.
Frank Freudberg did an amazing job in getting my head messed up, it makes me want to read more from his hand. I highly reccomend it to psychological thriller readers.
"Around one thirty. We had an anonymous report of neglected children. No further information. I took a shot that the mom would be there. She was."
Lock is an investigator for the Child Protective Services. Its a job he's committed to fully. So when an anonymous report comes in that children are being neglected he decides to pay the family a visit. Natalie is the children's mother and she is convinced it's her husband making these allegations to discredit her in divorce proceedings and a custody battle. Lock thinks that this might just be true.
He is mesmerised by Natalie, a young mum of two beautiful daughters, she asks Lock to help her to prepare to fight against her husband and win her case.
But Lock already has his own addictions and Natalie is becoming his new one.
Lonely and having this obsession of having a family to call his own.... he decides to help her. As he passes that line he takes himself into another world of lust, murder and lies until he no longer knows what is the truth....
"I can’t help thinking that part of you wants me because I can help"
My thoughts.... I'm used to only reading stories about strong male characters so this story did take me out of my comfort zone. It was well written with twist after twist, nothing is what it seems. Lock frustrated me, he was so naive but he was also in love lust with Natalie. It was an interesting take on a story full of deceit and lies. At times I was internally screaming..
But as Lock got more and more sucked in I found it at times a touch depressing that he could be so taken in by what he had agreed too.
But then I realised that he was so desperate for this family that he would do anything to get it...
I enjoyed the finally twist and although I liked the story, if I'm honest it left me with an uneasy feeling as I read it. Maybe if it hadn't I would've enjoyed it so much more.
"I received a copy of this book from the author and Booklover Catlady Publicity in return for a fair and honest review, many thanks"
Oh the power of love, one mans life turned upside down with a women who manipulates and deceives but he can't get enough, he is totally obsessed by her. How will it all end? You will have to read this to find out. Well worth the time, brilliantly done I loved this book.
Lock Gilkenney works for the Childrens' Protective Services, a job he loves with all his heart. He's a 40-ish bachelor and what he wants most in the world is a family of his own to love and care for.
When he takes a call from Natalie Mannheim, his life takes on a new dimension and takes him places he really doesn't want to go. He falls in love with her 2 young daughters and he falls under Natalie's spell as she looks for ways to divorce her husband and retain custody of their children ... and his money.
At times I found some sadness in this book. Lock is such an easy-going guy with little wants and needs. He tries to see the best in everyone.. and you just know he's had his heart broken dozens of times. Natalie is a user, a manipulator, and there were a few times I wanted to just slap the snot out of her.
The book lagged in just a couple of places for me, but not to the point that I felt frustrated or wanted to stop reading. The characters and their stories were well-woven into this book. I really like when I can feel intense emotions aimed at them or their situation.
There were a couple of real twists and turns that I found fascinating ... I hadn't seen them coming. All in all, a very satisfying book.
My thanks to the author and his publicist for furnishing the book in exchange for an honest opinion.
Now I'm determined not to spoil this one for anyone who may take my advice and read this superb novel, so I'll keep this short! Take a trio of complex characters, add in their interactions and schemes to manipulate situations and each other to achieve their own goals, put them all into the head of a talented author and you’re sure to have a great psychological thriller to keep you turning pages.
There are themes running throughout the story of love, deceit, addiction, regret and shame together with superbly developed characters and, of course, murder. It is a riveting read and one I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading well crafted psychological thrillers - get yourself a copy of this one, you’ll be in for a real treat, especially that ending!
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this in exchange for my honest review.
Two lines of the synopsis for this story instantly captured my attention: "ALL LOCK GILKENNEY WANTS IS A FAMILY. BUT HE'LL HAVE TO CROSS THE LINE TO GET ONE."
Let me start off by saying that Frank Freudberg's writing style was very solid, and I really got a feel--initially--for his characters. Top Investigator for Child Protective Services is Lock Gilkenney, a man who has overcome more than his share of heartaches in the past. he has finally gotten his life on track after joining AA, and truly makes a difference in the lives of the children he represents. The one thing he can't get over is the loss of a family that he once "almost" had...
Enter Natalie Mannheim, an extraordinarily beautiful, wealthy woman in the midst of a divorce. When someone falsely calls CPS on account of the soon-to-be-ex couple's children, Lock's involvement begins. Natalie, now accustomed to her lavish lifestyle, is not willing to go without getting every last cent she can.
Now for a few issues I had.
The first half of the story would have been even more powerful--emotionally speaking--if the first chapter hadn't given away what was going to happen later in the book. I couldn't help but feel this made it somewhat anti-climatic--when you already know what the result is going to be in a case like this, you completely lose the enjoyment of a suspenseful build-up.
After that, the second half just didn't hold the same level of excitement as the first. Where I still felt that Natalie's character was true to form, suddenly Lock seemed to be another person altogether. His ignoring obvious facts just didn't fit in with the intelligent, cynical character that we were first introduced to. The actions and "inactions" he did made no sense to me at this point. In fact, the entire last 60% or so just didn't have the same emotional captivation as the first 40%.
The conclusion, when it finally came, was no surprise, and the story ended without any real sense of "connection" with any of the characters, for me.
Still, I felt that the writing showed promise, and I would be interested in checking out a "tighter-woven" novel from Frank Freudberg in the future.
*I received an e-copy of this book from the publicist in exchange for an honest review.*
This is the first book I've read by Frank Freudberg. It was definitely a page turner and takes the reader through a myriad of emotions. This book shows how good intentions can go horribly wrong and set off a chain reaction of unfortunate drama filled events. The main character, Lock, is a child protective services investigator who has a strong passion for helping the clients he serves. Lock has family of origin issues, a history of addiction, and grief issues that have an impact on his day to day life as an investigator. His job also serves as a coping mechanism to deal with his own emotional/psychodynamic needs.
He comes across a particular investigation that challenges every area of his being. This book exhibited how amazingly one can be so blinded by manipulation because it's all wrapped up in a pretty present of their vulnerabilities. The author takes you on a ride of deceit, the struggle for sobriety, as well as one man's quest for love and desire to have a family so strong that nothing or no one will get in the way.
I'm pleased with how the book ended despite not wanting it to end and how the author did a fantastic job in developing the characters. This book was full of twist and turns. As I read this book, I was full of shocked facial expressions and cursing out loud as well LOL. The author writes so well you become one with the book and characters. Everything Lock went through was palpable. I completely understand why he reacted in the ways he did through out the book. I didn't always agree but I definitely formed empathy for him. I actually hated to get to the end. There were some gaps I felt in some of the events where some things had to be implied or you kind of had to wonder, "Now how did that come about?" However that didn't happen often. That also did not stop me from rating it 5 stars #teamlock

At the beginning I really thought this book was going to go places.
But as I got further into it, it became just more of the same.
Baby Please Don't Go failed to grip my imagination or to stir any passion in me.
I did finish the book, but honestly wish I had given up at the 60% point when the thought first crossed my mind.
Not only did the book fail to stir any passion in me, but I feel that the author did not have a lot of passion for his subject. It felt like he had an idea and just knocked the book out.
The ending was abrupt and, I felt, an extremely unlikely outcome.
Definitely not recommended by me.
Thank you to NetGalley, Inside Job Media and author Fran Freudberg for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lock is a genuinely nice guy. He is someone who is battling demons but all he wants out of life is the love of a good woman and children to call his own. By working in CPS, he can at least help children by trying to protect them from the ones they need protecting from. It certainly can't be an easy job.
Abby is Lock's boss and mentor. I thought he was a great character and definitely not one to be hood winked regardless of his age! He is very much Lock's sense of reason and you can't help but take to Abby's character.
Natalie is a character who I grew to dislike immensely. All I can say is that being in love can definitely blind people. She certainly has the reader going through an array of emotions and none of them good.
Baby Please Don't Go is a story all about choices. It is quite a dark and gloomy read as we see one man's life spiral out of control. It made me angry as well as pitiful at what I was reading. Whilst a decent read, it did make me want to go and read something light hearted after finishing. An interesting introduction to the authors work of which I will check out more.
Baby please don't go is a psychological thriller. I have read a book by this author before called Find Virgil which i enjoyed so was happy to read this book glad i did it didn't disappoint.
Lock is a Child Protective Service investigator when an anonymous report comes in about neglected kids but everything seems fine when he checks up on it. The mother of the children in question is Natalie she is going through a divorce and Lock thinks the caller was trying to make Natalie look bad. Natalie gets Lock to help her win against her husband in an divorce without him she doesn't stand a chance. In the past Lock was addicted to drink and cocaine but with help he has got clean, but with Natalie she is like his new addiction. Another great story by this Author lots of twists which i love looking forward to more from this Author.
Thank you Netgalley and this Author for a chance to read this book.
These are the type of stories I love, where one wrong decision leads you down an ever-quickening descent into moral complexity and the consequences that follow. Lock Gilkenney is a CPS agent who lost his family in a tragic accident. He's dedicated his life to helping children and refuses to cross any line, always doing what he feels is right. But when an opportunity for a future he thought was only his past comes in the form of an abused spouse he is investigating, he begins justifying decisions that will end up costing him everything.
Freudberg pulls no punches in this novel and his characters breathe with a tragic intensity of purpose. A riveting, character-driven story, this is a novel that demands to be read. Highly recommended.
One hell of a psychological thriller! There is a recovering alcoholic who is a guardian angel for children and all he wants or better yet deserves is a family. Often, many people cross extreme boundaries for the love of their own children and Lochlan Gilkenney is one of such who'd do anything for any child.
There is extreme thrill upto 60% of the book, the rest 40% became predictable enough, even if it wasn't predictable it was not surprising.
Overall, it kept me engaged until the end and a pretty refreshing thriller!
Thanks to Netgalley (Author/Publisher) for providing a free copy for the review.
I received a free copy from the author and his publicist in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Frank Freudberg! I cannot recall the last book I read in which I liked a character so much and loathed another one just as much. Lock, a recovering alcoholic, is such a good person. He may be misguided and easily manipulated, but the poor guy is just trying to do the right thing. Natalie, a femme fatale in the most classic tradition, gets him entangled in a plot that can't possibly end well, and may destroy his life. All the twists and turns are like watching a drunk crash into a tree with a baby in the car... I cringed but couldn't look away. I was so anxious, and disappointed in Lock’s choices, and excited in turns, I just had to see where it all took me. There are many books about alcoholics, but seldom does an author show how devastating a disease it is. I don’t give it five stars because some parts are a little too long, specially the arguments between Lock and Natalie. These parts explain why he is so enthralled by her and why she can so easily manipulate him, but I just wanted them to get over with so that I could find out what happened next. Baby Please Don't Go is disturbing, interesting and impossible to put down.
Emotionally earth shattering. Through the whole story I felt only compassion for Lock. Natalie, however, not so much.
The story is about a recovering alcoholics whose only dream is to have a family of his own and finds that when he meets a woman named Natalie who gives birth to his son Auggie. But Natalie isn't the warm loving woman that Lock thinks and he is thrown into a world of lies and deceit.
This is a unique story and a review would never do it justice. The author tugs at your heartstrings thought the story and completely engulfs you into the world of Lock.
I absolutely LOVED this book. Couldn't put it down. It thrills, terrifies and delivers on every page. What a rollercoaster ride of a story. Original, compelling, brilliant. Highly recommended.
Lock is a committed investigator at Child Protective Services who desperately wants a family of his own. He's also a recovering alcoholic coping with grief and abandonment issues. One of his cases involves Natalie who is going through a nasty divorce and custody battle. Lock becomes infatuated with Natalie, and it all goes downhill from there. This was my first book written by Frank Freudberg, who definitely has a way with words. He really makes you feel things. The author truly succeeds in making you feel emotions towards the characters, but not necessarily in a positive way. For me this ranged from sad and disappointed to being so angry, I wanted to slap Natalie as well as Lock several times. Natalie for being such a horrible manipulating piece of work and Lock for being so weak and for making so many bad decisions. The character development was outstanding. Furthermore, there were really good twists and turns that I had not seen coming at all. Half way through I gave up on trying to predict what would happen next. I finally realized this plot was unique and totally unpredictable. I loved the ending.
I managed to read this in one sitting while on the plane heading on holiday and I just did not want it to end.
We start off with Lock breaking into a building and making a shocking confession to an old friend. This pulled you in straight away as it you need to know what he meant by his shocking words. We go back in time with Lock as he tells the story of his life.
It was just like any other day, Lock heads off to do a standard home visit after an accusation of child neglect where he meets Natalie. Nothing could have prepared him for what was to come and what he would be prepared to do for this woman; driven by his desire to start a family he sacrifices his morals for the woman of his dreams.
It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced such a range of emotions while reading a book. I hated Natalie with every fibre of my being while also changing between feeling sorry for Lock to wishing he would stand up for himself.
The plot itself is good and well paced. I must admit that I felt a bit cheated by the ending and, without giving away any spoilers, I think a lot of people will want a lot more punishment than what happened. All round excellent book and I will look out for this authors books in future.
I was given this book by the publicist in exchange for an honest review.
Baby Please Don't Go left me with mixed feelings. Don't get me wrong. Overall it was a good book. However, the story was a bit long winded with unnecessary elements that could have been removed to make the book less "fluffed" up.
Lock is a CPS agent that gets assigned to a case and the beginning of the story starts off with him in a perilous situation and confessing to his conspiracy in a crime that hurt the children he was supposed to protect. The story flashes back to the events that lead up to that point and we meet the duplicitous and conniving Natalie, who turned this good man into a criminal. The story reaches present day and we are then taken on another journey into another saga between Lock and Natalie that leaves you with an ending you may not have seen coming
So I have mixed feelings about this book. While the book was well written, I found myself struggling trying to root for Lock when he showed (in my opinion) some weakness and gullibility when it came to Natalie. He knew deep down that Natalie was up to no good, but he let his obsession with having the perfect family outweigh his common sense. In all fairness he did want the best for the children, but he let his compassion for them shadow being played for a fool. Do I think Natalie learned her lesson? No, I think Natalie is always going to look out for Natalie. However, I do feel that Lock will think twice in all that he does for the rest of his life.
‘Switching vices is like being on the Titanic and demanding a different deckchair'
‘Lonely guy, loves trees and children, wants to love and be loved. (Oh, and by the way, I’m a recovering alcoholic.)’ Thus might read Lock Gilkenny’s lonely hearts ad. Unfortunately those traits that endear him to the reader, will ultimately prove to be his Achilles heel when he meets Natalie Witt, sociopath par excellence. Ignoring all the warning signs, he sees in Natalie the means to get what he has long been denied to him – a family, and this is where the rollercoaster ride begins. Natalie is an arch manipulator who will stop at nothing to achieve her ends and doesn’t care who she destroys in the process, as she and Lock embark on a very dangerous liaison.
We’ve all read that much loved crime and thriller mantra ‘trust no-one’ – reader take note and apply rigorously while reading this book! There are many twists and turns along the way and at times it is like watching a crash in slow motion – you know exactly what is going to happen, but are powerless to stop it. At an early point in the novel, Lock comments that switching vices is like demanding a different deckchair on the Titanic, and that’s exactly what he keeps doing.............
This was a great read, the first book I have read by Frank Freudberg, but it won’t be the last. I have already added ‘Find Virgil’ to my reading list!
Thank you to NetGalley, Frank Freudberg and his publicist for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was given this book by the publicist in exchange for an honest review. Well what can I say!? I absolutely loved this book!!!
The story is well written and hooks you from the start. What I particularly liked about this book is just when I thought it would end as most books would have ended, this one carried on and I learned the "what happened next" without having to wait for another book or imagine what may have happened. A conclusion...an actual, real and believable ending! Just brilliant in my view.
The characters were also created perfectly--strongly developed, you know the ones you like and those you despise..they felt real. I really connected with Lock, his mentor and some of the other characters within the pages - even those I did not particularly like. Maybe that is because it is something I could see happening in America or maybe it was something similar to something that I read about in the papers...I don't know...but it was brilliant. Have I said that too much?
There were a few typos in this book which I though could have/should have been picked up but it did not distract me enough to affect my rating. There are also quite a few twists and I often felt like shouting at Lock as he should have seen them coming!
The pace of this book was also just right. It flowed evenly and picked up at all the right parts. I did not feel disappointed at any point. This was the first book I have read by this author and it certainly will not be the last.
