I'm interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition - particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.

I'm also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, food, drink, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.

"I like the way you feel. I like discovering new things about your body--how you react to my touch, to my kiss, to my body when it's inside yours. You are a book that deserves to be read over and over again."

In this next installment William and Raven’s love grows even stronger. William will do anything to keep Raven safe and is determined to help her get retribution from those who have wronged her in the past. But his thoughtfulness ends up backfiring on him and puts Raven in a precarious situation.

There seems to be no end of villains who are out to dethrone William. I lost track of how many vampires in the Consilium had their own hidden agendas, and I found it hard to remember everyone’s name and what their purpose was in the story. I think that this caused it to drag a bit for me. There were just too many different characters being thrown in and all seemed to either want to assassinate William or to put an end to Raven and William’s love affair. It was making my head spin!!

We learn that Raven is linked to the Curia and that person threatens William to either release her to his custody or he will bring the wrath of the Curia down upon him. William must decide which means more to him—Raven or the citizens of Florence that he rules over. Throughout the story we still get some very steamy moments between the two and it’s clear that they are so much in love with each other that they can’t bear to be apart.

 photo IMG_2143_zps3yhwkywd.jpg

William’s maker and circumstances that brought him to become a vampire are revealed. It was at this point that the story started to really pick up momentum. A ton of action starts to happen after about the 50% mark and we learn by the end that William’s plan to keep Raven safe, may have actually landed her in serious danger. I can’t wait to get the last book to see how it all turns out for these two!!

So even though the beginning dragged, I still would recommend this one because the story completely turns around during the latter half.

The second book in 'The Florentine' series, 'The Shadow' continues the story of William and Raven. After a brief separation, the two find their way back to each other, despite their obvious differences. Finally being honest about his feelings, William and Raven seem to have found happiness in their relationship, only to have William's responsibilities as the prince wreak havoc on their lives.

Perhaps it is just me, but this time around the storyline seemed a little flat to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed every minute, but the twists and turns didn't elicit the anxiety or anticipation that I'd expect in a suspenseful story. Instead, it seemed to flow pleasantly with minimal conflict until close to the end. Then when things happened that should have been upsetting, I felt somehow removed from the events. There was a disconnect for me that is hard to explain.

Aside from feeling a bit removed from the battle for Florence at the end, I was captivated by this story. Brief appearances by Professor Gabriel Emerson piqued my interest. I'm dying to know how things work out for him and Julia.

Raven's loved ones also play a more prominent role in this book. Her strained relationship with her younger sister and mother is prominently displayed, while she comes face to face with the cause of that strife. The priest who offered her solace is also intertwined in her current life in ways that she had never imagined.

Overall, this was a fantastic continuation of this story. It ends with a bit of a twist and I'm looking forward to seeing how everything plays out in the next book.

The Shadow opens with an uninterrupted timeline from The Raven as William and Raven are committed to each other wholeheartedly. There isn’t anything William won’t do for his Cassita and when he promised to give the gift of vengeance for her past, he takes his oath seriously. It is at this point when Raven’s character shines as the true protector and defender for those who were harmed. As William admires Raven’s strength and resilience, there are other forces that will continue to test their union and William’s rightful position on the throne.

“I came to Florence in search of beauty and hope.” “Beauty?” She frowned. “Perhaps you didn’t look hard enough.” “On the contrary, I was rewarded with both. Now I must save her.”

William has been the reigning prince of Florence for hundreds of years, and while he is an old and powerful vampyre, there are various factions with his Consilium conspiring to unseat his sovereignty. Those vying for his position are numerous and their surreptitious plans add to the tension of William and Raven’s relationship. The vampyres view humans as food or pets; therefore, William must be protective of Raven at all times and also defend his city.

“I won’t break you. Whatever harm I bring to you, I vow to heal.”

Added to the threat of a possible mutiny, William must protect his principality from the dreaded Curia, a powerful group of humans who regulate vampyres to ensure peace from dark forces. An unexpected ally of the Curia is revealed and it complicates Raven’s allegiance to her family and true love. If power hungry vampyres and the Curia aren’t enough, the investigation of the stolen Botticelli illustrations is still pending and the police inspector is hell-bent on exposing the mysterious William York.

description

For me, this multilayered plot with abundant characters was well choreographed. From the beginning, the stage is being set and then at midpoint, the plot explodes with action and there were times when I wasn’t sure who to trust. We also learned much more about William’s human life and how he was made, which was a crucial point in his character development and enriches the plot. I must say that I loved that part! Additionally, Raven’s character continues to grow and I simply adore her loyalty and unwavering trait as a protector. Lastly, I love the humor and properness infused in William’s character. While he is an old vampyre from a vastly different time period, his chivalry is honorable and his naiveté of popular culture makes him endearing.

When reading this book, I continued to be enthralled with the rich beauty of art and history and view the city of Florence as a character. At times, the tone of this series reminds me of Dan Brown’s, Angels and Demons, and not because this book is derivative, but rather because of the mystery, underground mythology and beauty. As such, I thoroughly enjoyed this installment and look forward to the next book in the Florentine series. I highly recommend for those interested in romance, intrigue, vampyres, art and history.

In The Shadow the love story between vampire William York aka The Prince & the human Raven Wood continues. After being apart for about a month, this unlikely couple is reunited. This extremely powerful vampire who is both respected & feared has a soft side when it comes to Raven. She begins to resurrect the humanity in him he thought was gone. They continue to fall deeply in love with one another & we see a tender side to William we thought didn't exist. William is absolutely delicious showing Raven how he feels about her! Swoon! ;))

-"You came back to me." "I never left."

-"You're a dream." She sighed. "A dream of love I never thought I'd have."

-"I like the way you feel. I like discovering new things about your body- how you react to my touch, to my kiss, to my body when it's inside yours. You are a book that deserves to be read over and over again."

-"I'd forgotten." "You'd forgotten what?"

I really enjoyed this story & seeing William fall in love with Raven. There is nothing he wouldn't do to be with her & protect her. We see him try to get justice for wrongs done to Raven in the past. As leader of the principality of Florence & the underworld, William is considered very dangerous. He would do anything to also protect his people & ensure his rule over the city. There is a traitor among them targeting the Prince & threatening his position of power. We get a lot of action & there is also still the mystery over the Prince's stolen art. Gabriel & Julianne Emerson also show up from time to time in this book. I look forward to the next installment in this series!

SUMMARY (100 words or less)
This book needs more work of a formal review. So I will come back. But quickly my thoughts are thus. What I appreciate most about this author and this story is the intellect. No need to dumb down a story for it to be great. I can appreciate the great mind behind the works. What should have been a predictable story was anything but. The story moved slow at times but it built to a crescendo. I applaud and wait with baited breath for the next installment.

The Shadow is a lush, passionate and complex story, filled with romance, art, history and suspense. I am not a huge fan of paranormal stories but I make an exception for Sylvain Reynard’s books. I LOVE the Gabriel’s Redemption series and Professor Gabriel Emerson makes an appearance here. What more could you ask for?

William and Raven are reunited in this story but William is battling forces who are trying to sabotage him. He has finally found the love of his life and he wants nothing more than to worship Raven forever.

“I will never have your nobility of spirit, or your protective nature, but as long as I have your love, I can be content.”

William will stop at nothing to protect Raven from both other vampires and from those who scheme to drive them apart. There is lots of action and mystery, written in the style that is completely unique to Sylvain Reynard. This is a very sensual and passionate book, and even if you do not usually read paranormal romance, you will love this story. The streets of Florence seem to come alive!

We also learn about William’s early life and the tragic story of how he lost his first love. Raven is completely trusting of him and along with the intrigue, there is also a little humor here, too.

“You’re giving me a toothache.”
He pulled back. “How is that possible?”
She laughed. “It’s a figure of speech. It means you’re being too sweet. Say something awful.”
William’s expression changed and he brought his lips to her ear. “I want to take you back to the house, so I can spread you on my bed and do all kinds of wicked things to you.”

I can’t wait to see what happens next! The Shadow is a beautifully written book and my favorite in the Florentine Series so far. Lush, lyrical, passionate and very intense. The outtakes are absolutely fantastic. Don’t miss it!!

The Shadow is the second installment in Sylvain Reynard's The Florentine series. There is so much world building going on in this continuation. I found it very informative about the history and structure of the vampire world. In my perspective, some parts were dry but there was plenty to keep me engaged and eager for the next installment, such as romance, action/suspense, vengeance, betrayal, and some family drama of the human variety. The Shadow was a likable continuation in my opinion and I plan to finish out the series.

My favorite quote:
“Love creates; it doesn't destroy.”

The Florentine series includes the following installments as of November 2017:
#0.5-The Prince (2015)
#1-The Raven (2015)
#2-The Shadow (2016)
#3-The Roman (2016)

The Prince, The Raven & The Shadow connect our beloved Gabriel Series to Sylvain's new paranormal Florentine Series.

YOU NEED TO READ THE RAVEN BEFORE READING THE SHADOW!
And if you haven't already, read THE PRINCE first and before that The Gabriel Trilogy!!! ☺

This 3rd book starts with a little time travel - we see how William lost his first love many 100 years ago :(
Then we go visit the Emersons - to kill them?
No, he promised Raven not to hurt them....but he'll have a little talk with Gabriel.

And then we go back to present-time Florence.
William has just gotten over his stupidity and told Raven that he loves her and that he has a surprise for her...
That surprise is her former step-father in a cell in William's basement. The step-father who molested her little sister and the person responsible for her bad leg.
But Raven is extremely upset about all that. She's not sure what to do now....

Then there's still the problem of a traitor in the Prince's 'government'.

And the police have still not given up on finding the person responsible for the theft of the Boticelli Illustrations.

William has his hands full in this book ... with politics and his new love life et cetera ...

What will happen to The Prince & Raven?
What will happen to Gabriel & Julianne?
Will everybody die at the end? o.O
Or will there be a horrible Cliffhanger?

description

I'm not telling you that of course ☺

description

I don't want to spoil too much ☺

well, there's not really a Cliffhanger - well maybe there kinda is...but not a really bad one ☺

First I have to say that I'm not really a fan of supernatural books. But since I love Sylvain's Gabriel series and Gabriel has a little part in here too, I really wanted to read this.

And I really enjoyed it. It's not like all those vampire books or tv-shows you always see. We don't have guys running around with blood dripping all over their faces, no bloody fights all the time. It's a real classy story. It's about love, and pain and loss and politics and the past and the future. About Art and the city of Florence. There's suspense and intrigue and mystery and romance. And it's so wonderfully written by Sylvain - he has this amazing writing-style that's just so different from other books ☺

This second book in the series was a tiny little bit too political for me though :/
I want my romances to be romances and William has soooo much to do and to worry about with being the Prince, so that the romance part gets pushed too far back. But other readers might love that. ☺

But - it's still very sexy and romantic and exciting and suspensy ...
I really love William and Raven together.
They're soo completely different, yet they just belong together.
But it'll be hard, with him being what he is.... I really hope there will be a very happy end for them one day!

Now I can't wait for the next book in the series!!!!!! I need to know what will happen to William & Raven next - and of course we want to see the Emersons again ☺

description

If you loved THE GABRIEL SERIES and even if you're not a HUGE fan of vampires - you need to read THE Florentine Series - IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!!! ☺

Raven and William continue their passionate relationship in The Shadow, but there are things brewing in the background that become front and center by the end of the book.

One of the things I like best about this series is Raven and William’s romance. There’s never a question about their love, they’re completely devoted to one another to the point of obsession. No worries of a third party causing doubts here. Instead of looking for their own gain, both Raven and William are selfless in their affections. William, in a virtuous attempt to find justice for Raven makes some missteps that really cost her emotionally, but he meant well. Raven is a completely selfless character always looking out and protecting the downtrodden. She’s slowly resurrecting William’s conscience by challenging his thinking and just by being around her, making him a better man.

As far as the plot, William’s brethren are scheming to overthrow him as Prince and take over the principality of Florence. William knows there’s traitor in his midst, but doesn’t know who or how far this traitor’s influence and plans go. The traitor’s identity isn’t revealed until the end. It’s apparent that Aoibhe (pronounced: Ava) isn’t all that she seems to be. I have to say I’ve disliked and distrusted Aoibhe from the beginning.

I didn’t understand Raven’s stance on . Did it make me like her less? No. But still I don’t get it and can hardly believe that someone wouldn’t jump at the chance to Also why wouldn’t she at least These issues continue to frustrate me somewhat and another strike against this story is the cliffhanger with no date listed for the third book.

I’ve always wanted to go to Italy and now if I go Florence will be at the top of my list for stops. The city sounds like a Mecca of art and culture.

Sylvain Reynard’s writing is interesting, beautiful and descriptive without being overly done. I look forward to how everything will turn out.

“Here is a feast for my senses as well as my heart.”

Well, what can I say that I haven’t said before? Honestly. Hands down my favourite book in this series which once more truly showcased the brilliance of Sylvain Reynard’s writing. This Author has always had a moving and striking way with words and once more I was amazed at the perfection and beauty. It’s not just words; it’s poetry – it’s listening to a song whilst the heart beats in tandem to the tune – furiously thumping its way into a rising crescendo.

“I’d forgotten.”

“You’d forgotten what?”

“What it’s like to be loved.”

The Shadow had everything any reader of romance and paranormal seek to find in a story. It had excellent pace with moments of sheer passion, intrigue, mystery, action and utterly stunning romance.

‘A bird in a cage is never as beautiful as a bird that is free.’

Reading this in one sitting I didn’t come up for air as I followed the continuing journey of the beautiful sweet soul; Raven and the distinguished passionate and somewhat arrogant Prince of Florence; William.

“You’re mine now. No one touches you. No one hurts you. And everyone who has will pay.”

The Shadow will captivate every sense of your being with vivid imagery, an enthralling story and characters who steal your heart. Of harrowing pasts and memories – loyalties, treason and war. This sensual, mesmerising, thrilling and refined series reminds me of why I fell in love with the paranormal romance genre many years ago. It felt like coming home.

“You’re a dream. A dream of love I never thought I’d have.”

As always, Sylvain Reynard never fails to mesmerized me with his words. I love the way he tells a story with a delicate of history and romance in it. It's amazing and consistent. The Shadow is one of the books I'm excited to dive in this year. I'm eager to know what happens on William York and Raven Wood's story

"I'm not a good man. I'm not a good man at all. But I love you and my love is certainly steadfast."

The story starts on what's left on The Raven wherein William York is about to give Raven a precious gift after winning her back. He's giving her justice by imprisoning her stepfather and she'll be the jury of his fate. Raven's decision truly speaks her personality. What she'd shown here makes me admire her so much. An avenging angel but not monstrous. That serves right for a person who abused children. That's just one part to conclude the issue.

The main conflict is about The Shadow who is likely betraying William a.k.a The Prince to claim the City of Florence and his reign. Obviously he is part of the Consilium and he is about to find out who is this tyrant. I made my guesses and I somewhat got it right (there are few others betrayed him and my suspicions are true). The Curia ( this is a group who are against the supernatural creatures and they ensure that humans are safe from them.) adds more conflict as they threat on unleashing wrath in the city.

So much has happened in this book. Lots of twists going on that William and Raven's relationship has been put on a test. These two characters remained passionate and protective with each other throughout this book. Gah! I swoon over them. They gave me heart eyes! I love these two very much and I wish all is well to them on the next book.

It's a promising sequel. However, there are some parts that are left out. Like, Ispettor Batelli's investigation to Raven. I thought he's a HUGE threat to them (apparently, it's not). Also, I'm curious what role will Gabriel and Julianne play in this story. Aside from the connection of the stolen painting originally owned by William and Gabriel's exchange with him... I still wonder. I hope it will be explained on the next book.

The Prince found all that is beautiful in Raven.

"A bird in a cage is never beautiful as a bird that is free."

"You are a book that deserves to be read over and over again."

"I came to Florence in search of beauty and hope.
......, I was rewarded with both..."

Once again, Sylvain Reynard's beautiful words have captivated me.
I wanted to read The Shadow slowly and savor each word, but I found it too difficult to put down.
I'm mesmerized by his writing!
And that's all I have to say about that.

Despite my best intentions, my review for The Shadow is a year overdue. This is a book I’ve thought about a lot over the months, knowing my review would be wholly focused on William York. After reading The Prince and The Raven, I had hopes that The Shadow would be pivotal in helping me to figure out the mysterious Prince of Florence once and for all.

When I read The Prince, William’s visits to Santa Maria Novella and the Spanish Chapel stood out in my memory as a great opportunity to study his true character, and I found myself replaying that scene over and over as I went on to read The Raven. Looking back at my e-book, many of the quotes I highlighted in The Raven were William’s. He said many things that struck a particular personal nerve with me, and many of them made me feel sad. Despite his claims to the contrary, there is much more to William than vengeance and darkness, and this left me speculating about him even more.

Throughout the Florentine Series, I’ve treated William’s vampirism in the same way that I look at Raven’s injured leg. It’s an important part of his character and one that shouldn’t be ignored, but it’s also only one aspect of a complex personality. In The Shadow, we do finally learn some details about William’s life as a human and how he was turned into a vampire. And while these revelations did provide additional answers about the core of his character, I still wondered (and worried) about the eventual outcome for him and his Cassita.

As a character, William has evolved dramatically in the course of three novels. During The Shadow, it is clear that William’s love for Raven is restoring his long-lost humanity, but it is also clear that things that are usually well within The Prince’s control have gotten away from him. He wants to protect both Raven and his beloved city of Florence and in the process exposes both to grave danger. The arrival of Father Kavanaugh in Italy was a particular standout to me. The interactions and reactions of Raven, William and the priest were exceptional, and the dynamics between the three characters in this part of the series were truly captivating. SR has hit his supernatural stride with The Shadow, and I was not one bit disappointed.

As the upcoming release for the final book in The Florentine Series draws near, I’ve considered several possibilities for the ending of William and Raven’s story. How will the Roman, the Curia, and the Consilium in Florence ultimately deal with these unconventional lovers? A number of scenarios have presented themselves within my imagination, and this is the true magic of SR’s storytelling. Many theories are swirling, but until The Roman is released I won’t know which one, if any, will come to fruition.

One of my favorite books of 2015 was The Raven, the first book in this series. I have loved every book by Sylvain Reynard that I’ve read, and he continues to amaze me with his beautiful writing. I was beyond grateful and excited to receive an advanced copy of the second book in the series, but honestly I was hesitant to dive into it immediately. I always worry that the next book in a series, by one of my favorite authors, may not live up to my high expectations. I was nervous and put off starting it for several weeks. Well, my worries were ridiculous, because this book exceeded all of my expectations.

There’s something about SR’s writing that feels a bit old fashioned – his prose is lyrical and beautiful. I become so engrossed in his stories and the writing that they’re impossible to put down. Then I’m sad when I’ve finished the book in only a few days and have to wait another year for the next one.

The book starts very intensely, picking up where the first book left off. And although I enjoy the suspense, the historical pieces, and the life of the underworld, it’s Raven and William’s love story that keeps me coming back for more. Their romance is beautiful, their passion so intense. Their relationship is tested by many outside factors that keep you on the edge of your seat in suspense. And a fair warning, this book ends on a pretty wicked cliffhanger, which I would normally not be a fan of. I’m only more forgiving of them when it’s a book by a favorite author.

Not wanting to give too much away, this book, this series, is one you have to read and will then understand why I have such a deep love for SR’s writing and storytelling.

BOTTOM LINE:

A story full of suspense, lyrical prose, and the most gorgeous setting – I can’t recommend getting lost in SR’s beautiful writing enough. A must read series.

4-4.5 "Due Justice" Stars for the story and 5 Stars for the narration!

In a provocative tale of revenge and justice, as well as, a story that will keeping you guessing as to who are true allies or traitors, The Shadow continues the intriguing paranormal tale of the Vampire Prince of Florence and his human love, Raven Wood. Please note though that this is the second full-length novel in a trilogy that must be read sequentially. So if you have not yet started this series, please read my review of The Raven (Book 1) (or the novella prequel to this series, The Prince) to determine if this a series you may enjoy, as the below review may contain spoilers for the earlier books in the series.

The Shadow starts right where The Raven leaves off. Now that he is back, William is even more determined to make Raven his in every way. Thinking like the Vampire Prince he is, he determines to deliver justice to her for the past sins that were transgressed against her. Raven is also still desperately determined to resolve her relationship with her sister, who continues oblivious to the sins that were not only committed against Raven but also her sister. We also get a more detailed understanding of the past influences that have shaped William's morality or lack thereof.

Amidst these personal struggle, Raven and William must also deal with external political influences. Raven continues to be a subject of interest to Inspector Batelli, who still suspects her of involvement in the art theft of Professor Gabriel's artwork from the Uffizi Gallery (where Raven had been restoring old art masterpieces). Moreover the attacks on William and his Florentine subjects continue--almost certainly meaning there is a traitor among his ranks. As if this is not enough looming peril, the Curia also begins to take an active interest in Florence, including Raven.

In the Shadow we get more detail into the political instability and underlying causes for traitorous influences that are lying in wait to threaten William's rule. Even as the underworld becomes more complex and intertwined, we also get to delve deeper into the individual motivations that drive William and Raven on a personal level. Although Raven undoubtedly has begun to influence William's previously non-existent morality in a decided human, feeling oriented, direction, certain personal struggles bring to light how differently they still view matters. It is these differences, in turn, which notwithstanding their undeniable attraction and desire for one another begin to call into question whether their union could ever truly lead to a HEA irrespective of the plentiful other forces that conspire against them.

As I noted in my review of The Raven, John Michael Morgan's narration is darkly and sexily divine! Mr. Morgan does a remarkable job of maintaining consistency in his voices between characters in the prior book and this book to ensure that listeners instantly can recognize the characters from their portrayal alone. His voicing of William is fantastic both in a sexy and chilling way. A better match for portraying the centuries old vampire prince of Florence you could not find! Moreover, his depiction of Raven is equally spot on with personality traits and compelling in its delivery.

Mr. Morgan also manages to produce slightly varied intonations for all of the other multitude of characters that make an appearance in The Shadow. Perhaps my favorite part of Mr. Morgan's narration is his attention to the mood of the scene. I love how I am able to tell the direction the story is taking just from his tone alone.

All in all, The Florentine Series is a must listen for paranormal romance fans. The art history and gothic influences make this unique paranormal world highly original and quite intriguing. Whereas the passionate and intimate connection between two such different beings as The Prince and Raven amidst the desperate and star-crossed tragic circumstances they find themselves in, is sure to tug at the heartstrings of any romance enthusiast. I can't wait to experience more of Sylvain Reynard's writing and John Michael Morgan's narrations, especially the next installment of The Florentine!

What an absolute pleasure it was for me to read The Shadow by Sylvain Reynard. As much as I enjoyed the first book, The Raven, this second installment was just that much richer and bolder. I think it was also better because I felt a stronger bond and affinity with the characters.

Full Review to come closer to release. This is a book for lovers of complex characters and paranormal suspense. It explores the moralistic ideals of good versus evil, and the transformative effects of love and hope. Now I just need to trim my review that has turned into a thesis on vampirism.

PHENOMENAL!!!! I literally could not put this book down and AHHH!!!
More review to come!!!

I am not even sure where to begin this review...
I truly love anything Sylvain Reynard creates. His Gabriel Inferno's series was amazing and when I heard he was going to step in to the paranormal genre, I was beyond ecstatic.
So, as I dove in to The Raven--getting the opportunity to meet these intriguing characters--I was immediately hooked.
I read The Raven right before reading The Shadow and for two straight books being immersed in their world I was in total heaven.
Sylvain Reynard carries over his eloquence for beautiful wordship in to this series and I have fallen completely in love with this series.
I am enamored with the complexities that Raven and our illustrious Prince provide us with in this epic story.
Not only is the story so captivating, you are also so caught up with imagery of the beauty of Florence and the history of magical works by famous talented artists.
I don't feel like I am reading a story here. I feel like I am there experiencing each and every moment with these two.
My heart is so invested in Raven and William. It is not an easy flowing relationship. These two struggle with everyday problems ON TOP of the mystical ones as well...
And not to let it slide, but oh goodness...the romance with these two...*sighs*
I am so in love... Gives me chills just thinking about...Makes my heart flutter...

Now, with the romance aside, the underworld of the Prince has become tumultuous and things are escalating quickly. Everyone is suspect to being underhanded and I am dying of curiosity to see who will ultimately betray William. Each and every page leads us closer and closer until the nearly end...And it becomes explosive...
So much revealed and as the last page comes in to view...OH MY WORD!!!
I did not see that coming...
Now I am truly dying...I NEED the next book...NOW!!! *cries*
Just phenomenal...One of my favorite books!!

Such a great story! So passionate and sensual as well as action packed!

William and Raven are such interesting characters. There is a great amount of passion between these two and they have a remarkable connection. It's breathtaking, romantic, and exciting. There were some ups and downs and bits of drama and emotion. I found it all very captivating. It's a wonderfully written story, almost lyrical in a way as the words flow, drawing you in.

I loved learning Williams background and about his change, that was a bit of detail I was dying to know. Loved the tie in right at the end when even more was revealed about his past. I found that super exciting! Raven is strong throughout and I admire her selflessness. I think she's a really great character.

I greatly enjoyed more of an intense peek into the vampyre world as secrets are revealed and bad guys are exposed. Lots of answers came to light from lingering questions from the first book, The Raven. There was lots of action and fighting, it was awesome. I loved that element, it was very descriptive and intense. I don't want to say more without spoiling it but that last 25% had me turning the page like a mad woman. I couldn't read fast enough. Loved the answers I got and cannot wait for the final installment.

I thought there was a good flow throughout, the first half dragged a bit in spots for me with the back and forth of William and Ravens relationship. I enjoyed it, I just found myself ready for more, I needed some action and drama. When it happened, I was not disappointed. Totally worth the wait!

A beautiful story filled with passion and love!

A sensual and gripping continuation of William and Raven's love story. The passion and intrigue flowed so easily with every turn of the page. This engrossing romance plays out like a movie in my head and fascinates me to no end. SR's lyrical prose keeps me enthralled and consumes all my thoughts while taking me on a spellbinding journey filled with romance, passion, emotion, and suspense. I needed William and Raven's happily ever after like I needed my next breath. I'm counting down the days until I can be immersed back into this fantastical paranormal world that Reynard so effortlessly created.

We dive into William's past and the tragedy that was his first love. It's heartbreaking and makes you so glad that he has found Raven. These complex characters were an absolute delight to read about. Their past, their story, their love, their journey of hope, it all came together to make one hell of a romance! Full of twists and turns, this hard-won love story turned out to be just what I needed. Raven is as strong-willed as ever and we see a more 'human' side to William. Together, their love is something amazing. The depth of what they feel for one another is something that is incredibly hard to explain but so intriguing to read about. It's sexy. it's beautiful. It's exhilarating. I can't wait to what's next!

4.5 stars

I really liked The Raven, but for me, The Shadow is even better. The plot picks up exactly where it left off. If you enjoyed the art and history intermingled with vampire fantasy and carnal desire featured in The Raven, you're in for more of the same depth. Features that I didn't notice as much from the first book but loved in this one mostly include the action and twists.

There is a war brewing. The reader has to try to deduce who is bad or good. Also, several little important clues have been dropped in both books about the background and connections of Williams. Raven's past and relationships play big parts too.

A female lead that keeps her wits while being in love and doesn't give in to the physical perfection the vamp blood could give her is enduring. Including actual historical figures as characters is brilliant for this storyline. Watching the mystery of William slowly unravel is alluring.

The Shadow speaks to the reader's interests in intelligence and romance. It's a great mix. I’m very much looking forward to the next novel in the series.

THE SHADOW is the second book in the Florentine series but really, it should actually be considered a continuation series of Gabriel Emerson. While I have no problem knowing that this is a spin off series, my real issue with this series so far is the fact that the author is still grounding this entire series on past characters. I enjoyed Gabriel and his wife but their story has come to a beautiful end. This Florentine series marks a change in several areas of Reynard’s writing. This is supposed to be a paranormal romance series. So I don’t understand why the professor needs to be so heavily involved in everything when his series was a Contemporary Romance. Perhaps if you haven’t read the previous series it would be easier to dismiss the fact that now you have some paranormal creatures interacting with a human throughout the book but I think it defeats the purpose because now fans who enjoyed the Gabriel books may find it more difficult to get on board with what’s happening in here.

Reynard’s writing remains largely the same and while I enjoy it in some areas, his attention to detail is also a double-edged sword. I think I mentioned this in one of Reynard’s earlier books I reviewed. Details are nice but too much can really bog down the pacing of the story. I felt that was the case here. It took me a very long time to get through this book. Something about the writing this time seemed to drone on, causing me to put it down more often than I was flipping the pages. I don’t know whether it’s because it’s only because of the writing style or perhaps these characters don’t hold my interest as much as Reynard’s past characters has. It’s unfortunate because there’s no doubt that the author is eloquent. It just doesn’t hold my attention for long.

SR has done it again with his new release of The Shadow! I've followed him along with the other muses of Argyle Empire through Sylvain Reynard's Gabriel Series, to The Prince Novella that bridges his series, and now through The Raven and The Shadow of The Florentine Series and can't wait for the final installment planned thus far. I truly loved getting to know the dark Prince of Florence, William York in this book and seeing him evolve and reawaken parts of himself that were dormant before he met Raven Wood.

A favorite quote: "I never left you. I was the shadow on the wall. And even if you'd sent me away, I would have remained your shadow."

We get to know more about William's past and see him get in touch with his human side as Raven awakens his heart. He loves her and would truly do anything for her even when his desire to kill for her is stopped by her desire for him not to do so. They face struggles as the Underworld fights for dominance and he fights to keep his one true weakness, Raven, safe from harm that his world brings.

Yet again SR uses art, culture, and historic elements to his writing as well as love, redemption, and the duality of darkness and light.

I like that the series is now considered a "Gothic Romance". Release day finds SR's The Shadow #2 for kindle sales in Gothic Romance, #25 paperback in Gothic Romance and #43 for #Kindle Vampire Romance! Congratulations SR! I couldn't help myself as I covet my kindle, paperback and audible versions of the book flipping though each version together through the night. I can't wait for a second read to truly grasp all that is special about this book. I could say so much more but I don't want to spoil it! I can't wait to discuss it with book friends around the world! You can see more on the Argyle blog, twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Youtube channels (IrisElli). Find me on Twitter @Iris_Elli or on Argyle Empire too. :-) ~ Iris~Elli The Shadow
