Teslanar has the gift of magic, but doesn't know how to use it, yet. He's been accepted into the Grayhearth College of Magic, but it will take more than enrollment for him to fulfill his dreams. Wizards don't just start throwing magic around, they need to be taught magical theory and what not. Until a magic user casts his first spell, a wizard won't even acknowledge their existence let alone teach them.
Will Teslanar succeed and become a wizard's apprentice? Or will life force him down another path?
Reading Order: Becoming an Apprentice Apprentice Mistake
Owen Tyler was born in 1976 and grew up in Billings, Montana. Owen considers self publishing to be a great opportunity. He has always enjoyed fantasy novels, which is why he chose to write in that genre. Owen grew up visiting the mountains where he enjoyed picturesque landscapes of epic proportion. He hopes to mimic some of that in his writing. He is currently working on a series of books that will continue the tale of Teslanar and his adventures in the world of Tahlia.
This little story tellers the tale is a young student wizard who in spite of serious problems in his personal life learns to cast his first spell. I would recommend this story for children ages 10 to 15 who like Harry Potter. Adults may find the story suffers from an excess of simple descriptions of thoughts and feelings rather than actions showing them. There are also a few minor inconsistencies and stylistic issues that younger readers are unlikely to spot. Personally, I would have also liked a bit more description of the main character who gave me the impression of someone around 15-16 years old even though the school was described as a college rather than a high school.
I loved this short story!!!! Fair cop: I love the genre of fantasy and magick and medieval, and this short story was a pleasant surprise like choosing a chocolate from a dessert box. I had just finished a cycle of stories about the Norse Ragnarok, the end of the world, and go from the Norse stories about the end of our world to a story about an apprentice struggling to become a wizard apprentice in a fantasy world.
The hero struggles a lot- a lot in life- through various tragedies and setbacks that are rolled out to him as if life LIFE does not want him to succeed and master magick. He struggles on and on learning to rule his mind and NOT let his mind rule him. When the mind wanders into grief and anger he must DISCIPLINE himself. He does not give up on his goal and dream of becoming a master wizard.
Overall, the Indian Buddha had a similar message: Master your mind or it will rule you. An inspiring read.
I loved this short story by Owen Tyler. Following the path of Teslaner who is trying to learn how to perform magic is very emotional. I found myself feeling his sadness. He had so much to overcome, yet he did not give up. This is well written with heart and will make a great continuation. L
This was a heartbreaking read of loss and feeling alone and overwhelmed. I feel like it does really set the stage for the series though. People with dangerous careers have to learn to focus. It makes sense that wizards and sorceresses would need absolute control over their emotions.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked how Teslanar overcame his obstacles even though there was so much going on in his life. You just know that he's on his way to becoming a great Wizard.
This story has a gorgeous cover. The writing is clear and the main character's emotions are authentic. This would be a good story for young adults. It was very entertaining and enjoyable as well as being moving. The author does not need to put "THE END" at the end.
Owen Tyler's Becoming an Apprentice: A Short Story is well written. I enjoyed it, but I wish it was a little longer. I will be looking forward to learning more of Teslanar's story, in his quest to becoming a mage.
