A poisoner. A pirate. The marriage they never wanted. And the dangerous quest they must complete.
Elayna Velore hates the idea of a husband. But when her mother tries to force one on her, she marries a pirate instead. One who owes her his life and leaves her alone, just the way she likes it.
Three years later, Elayna is busily curing women of their nasty husbands when one of those jobs lands her on a pirate lord’s kill list. Which brings her own husband, Captain Crimson Dyre, back to her doorstep with his smoldering smile… and a deal.
She must board his ship and help him hunt for a treasure that will free them both from the pirate lord.
But neither of them want this marriage—or to share a bed and a strange magical bond that grows stronger with each danger they face.
As they realize there is more to this treasure hunt than they thought, they risk losing their ship, their crew, and each other.
For here on the treacherous waters of Eloren Isles, every debt must be paid.
A marriage of convenience pirate romantasy standalone (no pre-reading, no cliffhanger!) that gives readers a flirty pirate captain, a vigilante poisoner, all the banter, a magical bond with mind speak, a lovely found family crew, a pet sea dragon, and so much more!
Need some Pirates of the Caribbean swagger? A fake marriage fueled by feminine rage? A vigilante governor's daughter and a handsome pirate? Look no further.
Elayna is a self-taught apothecary with a penchant for poisons and a serious longing for freedom (the dose makes the poison, after all). Crimson is our cinnamon roll of a pirate, who smells, fittingly, of salt, sunshine, and citrus. Their relationship develops at just the right pace, with cute details that made it feel earned. The side characters are great, and the villain does exactly what a villain should: he's so thoroughly hateable that you root for his downfall.
I could picture the tropical seas and islands so vividly that I nearly felt the sun on my skin. Add a dash of magic and some sea dragons, and you have an adventure worth boarding.
It's an easy, enjoyable read with a few darker moments, but the positive vibes clearly win out. And thank heaven standalone!
The Bone Debt was the perfect slowburn romance with a gut-wrenching plot that kept me engaged until the very end. I liked that the characters developed slowly and in ways that felt believable and that the secondary characters had a lot of depth. I also appreciated that this book is a standalone and that everything resolved without needing a bow.

Thank you to the Nerd Fam and the author for an e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions remain my own.
This is a pirate romantasy that follows a girl who wants to get out of the life her mother wants for her, so when she sees a pirate in trouble, to save him, she strikes a deal (bone debt) with him.
The characters were really fun to read about. This one had a really good found family. It’s action-packed and full of romance. It’s a bit on the insta-love side, but there is a reason for it. I loved the little bits of magic our FMC had and how connected she was to the ocean. 🌊🏴☠️
If you like more romance than plot, this one is for you. It was a fun read and I really enjoy Leah’s writing. My only complaint is the story felt a tad on the YA side, but I overall had a good time with it.
I received my copy via the NerdFam program, accepted by the author! All opinions are my own!
Pirates may be my next obsession.
This book has all the things I absolutely love. A badass FMC who knows her way around poison, a flirty pirate captain who loves her deeply (YES, there is a "touch her and die" moment!!) and a little magic.
I read this one in just a few days! I was INVESTED in this story (and also pirates are new to me... now I need 100 more pirate romantasy books). I will say 'Romantasy' is more loose in this; there are some fantasy elements, but the world itself is not reallyyy a magical one.
My advice: If you think pirates are hot... read this. Simple. This was an absolute joy of a read.
I really enjoyed this book! I received an ARC from the author (thank you so much!) and definitely recommend to anyone who likes romance novels involving pirates and ocean magic. Elayna and Crimson were delightful main characters, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop throughout the novel. The author did a good job at avoiding common romance traps/blockers that keep the two main characters apart (despite there being no logical reason for that), and when conflicts arose between them, it felt realistic and easy to understand why there was tension between them. All in all, a wonderful read.
I ate up every minute of this book! There are so many piratey shenanigans and basically the entire time is spent on a ship.
I loved the growing romance between the FMC and MMC. It starts off with them marrying so he can clear a debt owed and she can have some freedom and then oh no they're forced to work together and sleep in a bed together hehe.
The whole crew was a fun group of found family and I loved the snarky Goddess and magic in here too. Plus a water dragon!!
I will absolutely be going on to read other books by this author!
Read if you love: -Pirates -Water dragons -Meddling Goddess -FMC who poisons abusive husbands -Marriage of convenience -Forced proximity
Thank you to the author for the eARC. My thoughts are entirely my own. Finish date: 10/12/26, Release date: 11/5/26
So I’m going to start this by saying, HOW INCREDIBLE is that cover?! Stunning cover art. This book was marketed as a pirate fantasy and it definitely delivers on the pirate life. Often I see a pirate marketing to have very little pirate-y occurrences. This one spends the majority of its time delivering exactly that. Given the magic we are teased throughout, I really would have loved more world building and magic system development. That was lacking for me. There are a great cast of side characters and some found family elements. If you like a simpler fantasy romance, with a full side of pirate hijinx, this will be one for you.
This was my first pirate romance (where have I been?! Stranded on an island?!) And I enjoyed it. There is action, plot, romance, a found family, and mutiny! Everything for a great time. There's even a pet sea dragon!! I repeat, a sea dragon. She's the best.
The Bone Debt follows Crimson and Elayna as they travel the seas in the pursuit of revenge. What started as a marriage of convenience quickly became a marriage of love and affection in which both parties kept saving the other. The bone debt between Crimson and Elayna goes beyond that of a typical debt though, as when Crimson saves Elayna's life in return, the debt isn't completely fulfilled, and they discover their bond goes deeper. Their bond is magical. And this throws another dimension to the story that for so well.
Elayna is also a woman after my own heart. A daughter of the governor, brought up in high society, married to a pirate and working in her grandmother's apothecary, with a side hustle that was born out of revenge and female solidarity.
This is a good standalone that is likely to scratch the pirate itch.
Thank you so much to Leah for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
arc provided by the author but all opinions are my own!
a great conclusion to my pirate summer!! this was such a fun romp but be not afraid by the standalone nature! nothing felt rushed. the world felt believable and built out, the plot sailed (sorry), and the romance was so so tender.
my favorite thing was the atmosphere and the romance. i really loved how the world didn’t feel like it was built to house elayna and crimson, but crimson and elayna were built from the world. that, to me, is what sets good romantasy apart from romantasy slop. everything could stand on its own. if they didn’t get together, the story would have been just as satisfying and the characters just as likable!! it was swashbuckling! it wasn’t overly cartoony but not too serious either! it was fun!! it was exciting!! they swung from ropes and had feathers in their hats!! what more could a girl ask for! (one thing that did make me laugh was how many shots they could get off with pistols though without ever mentioning reloading. i was kinda imagining period typical pirates running around with glock 19s)
as i said, the romance was TENDER and BELIEVABLE. it is NOT enemies to lovers and was not marketed as such and for that i am grateful because then id have to go on a long rant about how society has lost the meaning of all that is holy (what constitutes a proper enemies to lovers).
this is a strangers to lovers. it’s not quite instalove, it’s realistic. these two people don’t know each other and react to it NORMALLY. i hate when two characters should just be neutral strangers and then are just really shitty to each other for no reason. it’s not believable. this IS. they’re two strangers who got married for convenience and now have to figure out how to be around each other!! DELICIOUS. i loved watching how they got used to each other and figured each other out. i also liked that they’re ADULTS. like WHOLE PREFRONTAL CORTEX DEVELOPED ADULTS. crimson is like 30 and elayna is 28. and THEY ACT LIKE IT. they aren’t immature, they are hesitant to trust each other because of course they would be given the circumstances, and then they communicate. LIKE ADULTS. honestly so refreshing in a genre that likes to make everyone act like they’re playing episode with no diamonds (is that a dated reference now? i have no idea).
honestly i think the story could’ve been told the same way (or even more streamlined thematically) without the magic aspect…….. controversial take. the dragons were fine and i liked talia but the magical bond thing just felt like an unnecessary addition to an already solid romance. AGAIN I DIDNT DISLIKE IT i just felt like at times it made me ask more questions than could reasonably be expected to fit in a standalone. like it didn’t feel necessary to how the characters developed or the plot. i know it has large bearing on the plot during a certain battle but i think the battle could have still been won without certain things happening. or maybe i want it to be expanded on MORE. it’s kind of in a weird middle ground of not enough and could be taken out OR expanded on and made to be necessary to the plot. it felt like a set up for future books more than something specifically relevant to this boon.
kinda minor thing that didn’t detract from my enjoyment is that the pacing was really good up until the last 15%. ifound myself going “STILL?” because i think things could have been concluded in a tighter way but i think i see the groundwork for future interconnected books (i will DEF be reading if true). it didn’t ruin anything but it did just make me ask if it was really necessary. i DID like the ending though so take what i said with a grain of salt.
ultimately a fun read and i would recommend to anyone else on a hunt for good pirate romantasy. thank you for the author for trusting me with an ARC and i’m so excited for it to be published to more people can experience it
feminine rage, vigilante FMC • marriage of convenience • pirates • golden retrieve MMC • treasure hunt • standalone • sea dragons
Firstly, thank you to the author, Leah Mara, for letting me read the eARC of The Bone Debt. This review is my own opinion, and I have not been paid to post it.
On one unexpected night, Elayna Velore discovers that her mother is planning to marry her off to a man who threatens to “break her.” So, naturally, she does the most reasonable thing possible: marries a pirate she's just met and saved from the noose. A pirate who promises to leave her alone and never force her to be his wife in anything but name.
Three years later, Elayna has become a vigilante, killing abusive husbands on behalf of women who ask for her help. But one particular kill leaves her indebted to the most dangerous pirate lord in the Eloren Isles. To pay off her debt, she must reunite with her husband, secure a treasure, and, ideally, survive the whole ordeal.
I genuinely loved the vibes of this book. Like, I had such a good time reading it.
The pacing was so good, especially for a standalone. Every chapter either moved the plot forward, developed the characters, revealed another mystery, or left me absolutely giddy over the banter between the FMC and MMC. Something always kept me invested, and I never felt like the story dragged its feet.
And THANKFULLY, the ending didn't feel rushed. We didn't spend the entire book waiting for the plot to happen, only for everything to suddenly explode in the last 10%. The story developed consistently throughout, which I really appreciated.
The secrets and reveals were another highlight for me. Some identities and schemes weren't fully unravelled until around the 80% mark, but when they finally came to light, they made so much sense. I had to sit back after a few of them and just think, "Of fucking course that's what happened."
Also, I guessed the spy wrong. :( ...moving on...
My only real qualm was that I wish the author had spent a little more time setting the scene. The focus is very much on the characters, their inner monologues, and their conversations, which I loved, but sometimes I struggled to picture exactly what was happening around them. Considering adventure/quest are such big components of the story, I would have appreciated a little more environmental description to really immerse me in the world.
That said, the worldbuilding and magic system kept me pretty intrigued. Without spoiling anything, I loved the inclusion of the gods in the magic system and how the superstitions felt fitting for a pirate story. It added so much to the atmosphere, and I honestly wish we could explore more of this world.
I know this is a standalone, but I would happily read more books set in the Eloren Isles. Especially after what seemed like a potential opening for a certain character's story at the end. 👀
The romance was another highlight for me. At first, I was a little worried that the attraction felt almost insta-love, but looking back, I genuinely enjoyed how their relationship developed. They had their highs and lows, and their struggles felt believable for the characters and their circumstances. There was a little miscommunication, but thankfully it wasn't dragged out for unnecessary drama. It felt more natural, and they worked through it without everything feeling magically fixed overnight.
And the NOTES THEY LEFT EACH OTHER??? I loved that so much!
Overall, this was a great experience for me. It had the romance, adventure, mysteries, magic, and character dynamics I wanted, with pacing that kept me hooked from beginning to end, but still with some minor room for improvement.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.
The Bone Debt was everything I wanted it to be and more! It is a true pirate romantasy filled with adventure, slow-burn romance, witty banter, a touch of magic, dragons, and plenty of unexpected twists. From beginning to end, this story was an absolute adventure to read.
One of my favorite aspects was the slow-building romance between Elayna and Crimson. Their back-and-forth banter was incredibly entertaining, and I loved seeing their relationship develop throughout the story. It reminded me a little of Poison Daughter, but with a greater emphasis on the emotional development and connection between the romantic leads. Their chemistry was fantastic, and the gradual progression of their feelings made the romance all the more satisfying.
Elayna was such a compelling protagonist, and I especially appreciated her character development. At the beginning of the story, she’s a lady who wants absolutely nothing to do with marriage and longs for a life of independence. As her journey unfolds, however, she begins to discover what that independence truly means to her, all while unexpectedly falling in love with Crimson. I loved that her romantic journey didn’t overshadow her personal growth. Instead, the two complemented each other beautifully.
Another element I particularly enjoyed was Elayna’s knowledge of herbalism. Watching her use her skills to both heal and poison others added such an interesting dimension to her character. It was refreshing to see a heroine whose knowledge and resourcefulness proved just as valuable as physical strength.
And can we talk about the adventure?! The story had the perfect balance of action, romance, and exploration. The different settings, the pirate atmosphere, and the constant sense of discovery made this such an immersive reading experience. There were plenty of twists that kept me guessing, but the story also made room for meaningful relationships and quieter, more heartfelt moments.
Speaking of relationships, I adored Reed! His friendship with Elayna was one of my favorite parts of the book. Their bond brought so much warmth to the story, and I appreciated how their friendship remained meaningful amid all the danger, adventure, and romantic tension.
I also loved the little references to the author’s other series, Rellmira Duology! I’m assuming these stories take place within the same world, and if so, I absolutely love that connection. There’s something so satisfying about discovering those little Easter eggs as a reader. I would highly recommend checking out Keys to the Crown as well!
Overall, The Bone Debt delivered everything I look for in a great romantasy: memorable characters, an engaging romance, exciting adventures, fascinating worldbuilding, and just enough magic to make everything feel wonderfully fantastical. It was such a fun reading experience, and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone looking for a pirate romantasy with heart, humor, and adventure.
Pirates! I'm obviously extremely bias because I love pirates and ships, but this was such a good time!
Plot: Elayna doesn't want to marry. But her mother is going to force her to marry some controlling well-bred man, so she beats her to the post by marrying a pirate she just met! He leaves for sea again and for 3 years she's free to work as a healer with a side hussle of revenge on abusive husbands. When he returns shes forced to make a deal: join him in a hunt for treasure that will free them from a pirate lord.
I mean: pirates, found family, yearning protective mmc who basically caves in to her at the drop of a hat, an fmc who is tough in her own way and smart, a cool sea dragon, sea goddesses, femimine rage, cool powers - what more could you want?
Absolutely loved having that internal communication link between them. You get so many good exchanges theyd never be brave enough to have aloud. Flirty "I'm allergic to shirts" Crimson was everything I wanted from a pirate captain. He was respectful, yearning and protective of his. Elayna was such a great fmc. She was intelligent, passionate and human. I really enjoyed her interest in herbs and medicine. She wasnt fighting tough (mostly) but she was tough when she had to be, yet unsure when it came to people and i really liked her.
Really loved the rest of the crew, especially Reed. He was a big soft labrador who was exactly what Elayna needed in a friend. Plus he likes cats.
I loved the powers and how real the world felt. All the islands had different feels and cultures and it just felt like a whole world existed that this whole story just slotted into.
I have to mention how Elayna talks about being a woman in the world. Where they're just expected to put up with what they're given and not take any more and exist around men, and it felt very poignant to being a woman in this world with some of the things she said.
I received an advance review copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.
this was a fun read with lots of action / pirate adventures.. honestly haven’t read too many pirate books so it was a nice change 🏴☠️
it started off quick and exciting and the buildup is really nice, but it did start to feel a bit drawn out in the second half for me, especially with their romance … their flirting and banter was great, but there was a mix of fast burn feelings and slow burn actions (which is fine) that started to feel like we would reach a point and then draw back and just keep doing this over and over 😅
the side characters and a found family vibe is always a enjoyable thing for me, and I did enjoy her moments with the rest of the crew , whether funny or sweet or sad!
there was a few things that I was hoping for more explanation or maybe explanation a bit earlier on it the story rather than seeming almost like an epilogue addition just to make sure they weren’t missed
a few things also were very obvious early on, and I’m not sure if they were supposed to be a big reveal or not but once they were stated I was like “oh I thought we already knew this” 🤷♀️ so maybe it’s just me getting better at figuring things out, but I wasn’t as surprised as maybe it could’ve been… but there was some good surprises as well that I didn’t consider which was fun
overall, I did enjoy their bond, although the development didn’t fully hit for me.. the found family vibes of the crew was awesome, and there was lots of fun action with ships and fighting and dragons that kept the story exciting
FIRST: If a book can make me smile like an idiot no matter where I’m reading it, it’s an automatic YES for me!
And let me tell you, The Bone Debt did EXACTLY that. I was reading this thing out in public, grinning from ear to ear and constantly looking around to see if anyone was staring at me.
There is just SO MUCH to love about this book!
The Tension & Banter: The sexy banter between Crimson and Elayna is TOP-TIER. But oh my god, THE SLOW BURN. I was 200 pages in, ready to scream at my book, “WHY HAVE YOU NOT KISSED YET?!” The tension had me in a chokehold!
The Characters: Crimson is officially the sexy pirate of my dreams. Both he and Elayna carry so much past trauma, but seeing how it shaped them into such strong characters was beautiful. I loved watching them grow.
The Dynamics: The found family had my heart, and Elayna’s family dynamics felt so devastatingly relatable. And can we please talk about Talia?! LOVE HER.
The Plot: The pacing kept me hooked and the plot twists actually made sense! No random twists thrown in just for shock value. Everything felt like it had a purpose and I appreciated that so much.
If you love incredible tension, deep and layered characters, found family and a pirate captain who will absolutely steal your heart, PICK THIS BOOK UP. Just be prepared to look a little unhinged while grinning at your book in public.
I received an ARC of The Bone Debt from The Nerd Fam and the author in exchange for an honest review.
Elayna Velore has no interest in being forced into the marriage her mother has planned for her. Her solution? Marry Captain Crimson Dyre, a pirate who owes her his life. Their marriage gives Elayna her freedom, and for three years, Crimson leaves her completely alone.
That changes when the two are forced to work together on a mission for the pirate Bishop. Their task is to capture a ship belonging to Elayna’s mother, and suddenly this married-but-practically-strangers couple is spending a lot more time together.
I really enjoyed watching Elayna and Crimson’s relationship slowly change as they got to know each other and began falling in love. Their connection also has a magical side—they can communicate through their thoughts, and there’s a mysterious bond involving the sea and sea dragons that added another interesting layer to the story.
Overall, this was a fun pirate romantasy with an arranged marriage, slow-burn romance, adventure, magic, and sea dragons. There were definitely a few cheesy moments, but I still had a really good time reading it.
This pirate romantasy was just what I needed! It has adventure, violence, love in a way I like it a lot, characters I can relate to, and a lot of interesting politics.
It's basically a marriage of convenience-to-lovers lovestory between a lady that hates to be a lady and hates men, and a pirate. It's inspired by pirates of the carribean and I knew that long before I read it in the acknowledgements. It has a very slow burn and he fall first. It’s cute, it's sweet, but it's a pirate so there isn't anything soft about it. And even though I was hoping they would end up together, I wasn't sure if they would until the end. Tension and the possibility of a sad ending is present very strongly the second half of the book.
I absolutely loved the 'pirate' details in the book. Looking for treasure, killing with and without feeling guilty, sailing a ship and more gave me so much joy! I also love how the roles on the ship are clear and how it made me love many of the characters. I absolutely adored the cook!
This book will be a fun ride for everyone who likes Pirates (of the Carribean) and romantasy!
This was a fun and fast paced book with pirates, gods and debts. It was action packed (almost nonstop) and had plenty of twists and turns. Elayna and Crimson get married in a marriage of convenience but are separated for three years because of reasons. They reunite when Elayna is in trouble and have to work together. I love and adored pirate captain Crimson. He is a flirty, cinnamon roll green flag of an MMC. He has moments of doubt but its because he is too blinded by yearning to see. I loved how yearny he was for his wife. Elayna was raised as an accessory to her mother's political and societal ambitions. She starts off very self-contained, stubborn and stiff. Her growth as the story went on was great. She didn't change, she just learned to adjust and became more resilient and happier for it. Crimson didn't fix her, but he did help her and in turn she helped him. I really liked their connection. I think it started as instalust, turned into a slow burn and became love. I liked the elements of fantasy with their bond as well. Overall, I had a really good time with this book and would read more in this world.
Review of Advanced Copy Recieved by Author thank you for the opportunity
If you like your pirates with magic and your romance with a high price tag, The Bone Debt sounds like a transaction you will be willing to make. Just don’t expect me to pay it back... I’m keeping this book. And WOW! FInally, a "Romantasy" that doesn't require a mortgage Sized commitment to a ten book series! The Bone Debt by Leah Mara is a standalone, which means you can get your swashbuckling romance fix and get on with your life without waiting three years for the finale. Between the pirate theme and that ominous title, I’m assuming the "debt" involves a lot of brooding, sword fighting, and probably some very intense staring across a ship’s deck. If you’re looking for a high seas adventure that’s heavy on the romance and light on the I need to read the prequel, the novella, and the spin-off first, this looks like a debt worth paying. Grab your eye patch and your bookmark it’s time to set sail.
Batten down the hatches, mateys! This book will take you on a ride!
Pirates, politics, bargains, debts, murder, so much poison ☠️
Add in a slow burn romance, sea dragons, and a meddlesome sea goddess with a bone obsession…
There were some parts of the story that dragged a bit, and I was confused at times with the bond and magic (the lightning). But, I absolutely loved the found family aspect of the crew and the evolution of the relationship between Elayna and Crimson. His yearning. Definitely a Crimson fan.
Excuse me while I go find some more pirate romantasy standalones to read. So much fun 🏴☠️
Could not put this down and proceed to read it in less than 24 hours. I had so much fun with this pirate romantasy! We have a marriage of convenience, a flirty captain who plays the fiddle, all the banter, a treasure quest, sea dragon familiars, magical bonding, a badass FMC, and more! Plus I absolutely adore the crew. This is a standalone and wrapped up nicely! I love the authors writing and can’t wait to discover more from her.
Thank you so much to the author for the early copy!
I’m not even pretending to be unbiased here. Pirates are my weakness, and you add an arranged marriage? I was already on board.
Elayna marrying a pirate to escape the match her mother wanted for her was such a fun setup, and then the treasure hunt, the magic, and the pirate crew made this a really entertaining ride. I had a great time with it. Pirate romantasy is apparently very much my thing!!!
Thank you NerdFam and Leah Mara for the complimentary ARC.
This book was a lot of fun and full of pirate adventures! So much was happening, and there was always something keeping the story moving. I really enjoyed Crimson, he was such a flirt. I loved that Elayna was a morally grey FMC, I really liked that she fought hard for what she believed in.
I did struggle with Elayna and her back and forth on the relationship, it was a little drawn out to me. This went heavily towards the adventures aspect, I would have loved a little more details on the magic that was tying it all together.
This was a dual POV, close proximity, slow burn, pirate romantasy.
I picked up The Bone Debt because the cover caught my attention and, honestly, I had absolutely no idea how much I was going to love it. Pirate romantasy isn’t something I’ve really explored before, but apparently I’ve been missing out because this had me completely hooked.
Elayna has spent her life trying to escape the expectations placed upon her, particularly those of her mother and the society she was born into. Crimson is a pirate captain who is charming, flirtatious and morally grey in exactly the way you want a pirate to be. Their marriage might begin as an arrangement that benefits them both, but when they are brought back together years later, their relationship becomes one of my favourite parts of the entire book.
I absolutely loved these two together. The banter and flirtation are brilliant, but what really sold their relationship for me was the slow burn. There is enough early on to make you desperately want more, but the book actually makes you wait for it. By the time their relationship develops, I was so invested that every little step forward felt like a reward. Their chemistry is fantastic, but there is also genuine respect between them. Crimson can be protective without taking away Elayna’s autonomy, and their relationship allows both characters to remain completely themselves rather than one becoming smaller to accommodate the other.
And then there are the pirates.
This absolutely captures that sense of adventure I wanted from a pirate story. Treasure hunts, rival crews, ships, morally grey characters and plenty of chaos, but it never feels like it is trying too hard to remind you that these people are pirates. The atmosphere is just there. They steal, fight and do objectively questionable things, yet somehow you still end up completely rooting for them.
I particularly loved Crimson’s crew. There are enough little pieces of their individual stories and personalities to make them feel like actual people without the book becoming overwhelmed by secondary characters. By the end, I wasn’t just attached to the main couple. There were characters throughout the crew whose stories I would happily read if we ever got the chance to explore them further.
The fantasy elements are surprisingly restrained, and I actually think that’s one of the book’s strengths. There is magic, mythology, a goddess, magical bonds and sea dragons, but the story doesn’t disappear beneath pages of lore and exposition. Instead, those elements almost feel like the myths and legends you would expect to exist around sailors and the sea. It gives the world depth while allowing the characters, romance and adventure to remain at the centre of the story.
I also loved the pacing. The book takes its time building its characters, relationships and story before everything starts crashing together towards the end. Once it reaches that point, there is a lot happening, but for me it felt like a proper crescendo rather than a rushed ending. The tension keeps climbing, the action keeps coming, and I flew through it. There were reveals I was ridiculously pleased with myself for predicting and others that completely got me, but everything ultimately felt like it belonged within the story.
Most importantly, it sticks the landing. This is genuinely a standalone. I finished feeling completely satisfied with where the story and characters were left, while simultaneously being slightly devastated that I had to leave them there. I don’t need another book to complete Elayna and Crimson’s story, but would I happily read stories about other members of this crew, other ships or basically anyone else wandering around this world? Absolutely.
I went into The Bone Debt thinking a pirate romance sounded fun. I came out wanting to read more pirate fantasy, searching through Leah Mara’s other books and wondering why on earth I haven’t been reading this genre before.
Adventure, romance, morally grey pirates, slow burn tension, magic, sea dragons and characters I genuinely didn’t want to say goodbye to.
Thank you to Leah Mara & The Nerd Fam for the opportunity to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!
First off, let me say WOW. I’m not even entirely sure what I was expecting going in, but this book blew me away. I consumed it in a day, and it was with great difficulty that I put it down at all. It starts with an absolute banger of a dedication - “For any woman who’s been told she can’t…. Yes, you f*cking can.” CHILLS.
I loved the combination of pirate adventures, high society, romance, and all of the chaos that ensued. Elayna was such an interesting heroine, and I was overjoyed that she wasn't your typical damsel in distress. Our girl is out here building the side hustle of my dreams - poisoning abusive husbands to set struggling wives free - to start a life of her own and escape the clutches of high society. She’s been through quite a bit, from her downright evil mother to losing her best friend. Her growth through the story was exceptional, and I couldn’t be more proud of an FMC.
Then we have Crimson. The flirty (and filthy) pirate captain I will now daydream about. The dynamic and banter between these two was my favorite part of the story. The marriage of convenience, and let me say it was quite convenient indeed, magical bond, and forced proximity made their relationship very entertaining to follow. Crimson had the patience of a saint where Elayna was stubborn and kept her walls erected. Elayna had the restraint I could only ever hope for where I would be giving into Crimson’s charm by the second conversation. I loved them together and how their relationship progressed into something really beautiful.
The found family aspect of the story was fantastic as well. I would quite literally go to war for Reed, Farley, Freya, and Talia. The rest of the crew were great too, but Reed and his story added a huge highlight to the book for me, and Talia made me want to have my very own sea dragon.
The ship hunt, the dangers along the way, and all the twists added a lot of excitement to the overall experience. I can truly say I did not see the twist coming at the end, which I loved because I always feel like I can guess what’s going to happen. In the end, I felt like everything wrapped up nicely to be a standalone and I wasn’t left with any burning questions.
Overall, this book was an entertaining, adventurous, and romantic read that offered something a little different from the usual romantasy lineup. It is definitely worth adding to your TBR!

For my fellow pirate romantasy lovers (especially those who adored The Ever King), The Bone Debt was an absolute treasure! It has everything I want in the genre: lush worldbuilding, swashbuckling adventure, sword fights, and characters with surprising depth—all wrapped up in a standalone novel. Sometimes you just want a complete story without committing to an entire series, and this one delivers and it has PIRATES!!
Elayna is born into wealth, but privilege doesn’t mean freedom. In her world, a woman’s worth is measured by her marital connections and her husband’s authority. When her mother tries to barter her off to a man she despises, Elayna takes her fate into her own hands and marries a pirate she meets one fateful night in a rundown sailors’ bar. And that pirate? Crimson, our cinnamon-roll MMC. Give me a soft-hearted pirate any day!
Years pass with no communication between the newlyweds, and Elayna builds an independent life working at her grandmother’s apothecary. But she has a deliciously dangerous side hustle: supplying poisons to women desperate to escape their abusive husbands. I love a morally gray FMC who takes justice into her own hands! After three years everything comes crashing together when Elayna poisons a high-ranking pirate, a bounty is placed on her head. Crimson has a choice: turn in his wife or protect her. Naturally, he chooses her. Now they’re thrown together on a dangerous mission where their survival—and Crimson’s freedom from his contract—depends on succeeding. Nothing says forced proximity quite like a deadly mission with your pirate husband!
The romance was everything. This is a true slow burn, built on trust, vulnerability, and two people learning who the other really is. They go from strangers to spouses in a whirlwind marriage, then to friends, and finally to lovers. Watching that connection develop made every little moment between them feel earned. And the tension? Delicious. This book checked every box for me: slow-burn romance, high-seas adventure, sword fights, morally gray choices, and that irresistible “MINE” energy. I was completely swept away, and I didn’t want to leave this world when it ended. If you love pirate romantasy with a cinnamon roll pirate, a poison ring wielding FMC, and a romance that makes you savor every step from strangers to lovers, add this one to your TBR! I absolutely loved it, and I can’t wait to see what Leah Mara puts out next!
Pirates of the Caribbean inspired (a lil barbie and the 12 dancing princesses plot, if you squint). Pirate x Poisoner/Healer. An ocean Goddess. Feminine rage. Found family. Flirting during battle. Water dragons. Many betrayals. HEA.
I love a good pirate story and a strong FMC, and this book delivered just that. Elayna is from high society, wanting to pursue an education rather than getting married to a man (who would likely abuse her). Despite having no choice to sail with her pirate husband, she drifts from the high society mannerisms that’s been engraved into her as a child, to learning how to let go and be free. Although she was a bit stuck up on her ways, she always made an effort to fit in with the crew and not be a wallflower. She takes initiative and follows through. She eventually becomes a key figure on the ship, being able to bring/make remedies for everyone. I love that she’s a girls girl, a big plus for me. Although she annoyed me at times, she ultimately grew on me, everything she does is for the safety of everyone, even if means sacrificing herself.
Crimson, her husband of 3 years, has always loved her even when they met for less than 2 hours. There’s absolutely NOTHING he wouldn’t do for her. Despite having a dark past and dangerous lifestyle, he tries to bring happiness into Elayna’s life. He helps her find the true meaning of freedom, even if it means being apart from him. Oh, and he also has a sea dragon named Talia.
This book brings out so many feels. Majority of it being rage. Rage to Elayna’s mom, a certain captain, an almost would be husband, pretty much anyone who tries to control Elayna. There’s so much action and violence in this book I just wanted them to catch a break already😭, it was so stressful to read, not knowing who was going to live. Not only that, there’s romance and so much banter/flirting. What I loved about the romance aspect is that they both struggle with it, Crimson with not wanting to drag or scare her away from his secrets and Elayna struggling to ever trust someone with the fear of being controlled, especially by a man. I also loved the found family trope, that’s what I love the most about pirate books, everyone has a different past but they’re all accepted and included, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other.
An exciting, pirates of the Caribbean style adventure of a women whose mother wants her to conform to society and the pirate man she marries to escape an arranged marriage meant to finally get her to settle down.
You follow the FMC, Elayna, whose mother is trying to force her into a political arraigned marriage to help with her next political campaign, and her father is sick and she is doing all she can using her medical knowledge to save him. With the threat to marry a man who says he will break her hanging over her head, she meets a charming pirate on her night out who after a single passionate kiss agrees to marry her to get her out of her arranged marriage but will allow her to keep her old life in her apothecary helping people and her father while he goes back out to sea. However 3 years after their wedding with almost no communication, they’re reunited and forced to work together as husband and wife on his ship because of a debt being called in that would put her and those she cares for in danger.
I enjoyed the daring pirate adventures that this story brought that very much gave me pirates of the Caribbean vibes between the motley crew of pirates, the battles between pirate ships, searching for treasure and the daring escapes and close calls that the pair had to make. I also loved the banter and tension between them as they spent more time together and had to play the fake married game in order to not reveal the true reason they got married. I also loved seeing the FMC slowly leave the courtly ways she was raised behind and the careful way the MMC slowly integrated her into pirate ways between teaching her to swim, allowing her to choose between ladies clothes and pants, having his crew teaching her to fight and always allowing her to choose what she was comfortable with! This was an exciting story that had me wrapped up in the adventure and danger of it all and it wrapped up everything so nicely with some of my favorite revenge coming to fruition! Overall I really enjoyed it, my rating 4.6/5!

This might just be my favourite book of 2026! Thank you to The Nerd Fam and Leah Mara for this incredible ARC. The Bone Debt is a stand alone dual POV pirate romantasy. This expansive, smash buckling tale follows Elayna, a high society lady who enters into a spontaneous marriage with a pirate in order to avoid an even worse one. Three years later, her husband, Captain Crimson, shows up on her doorstep and whisks her away for a high seas adventure.
This was the first pirate romance I've ever read and I am now addicted! Pirate romance is now on the same tier as shifter romance, and that's saying a ton if you know me. The emotion in this book lept off the page and right into my feelings. I loved Elayna and watching her grow from a strong woman shackled by the ideals of a proper society lady into a deadly force to be reckoned with. I loved that her growth was for her and not just for her husband. Crimson, I need a real one in my life. He was so thoroughly in love with his wife and never held her back from anything. He was such a great leader for his people as well, everyone respected him. I loved the secondary characters, especially Reed, my heart broke for him. The red herrings kept me guessing the whole book. The villain was the perfect bad guy, absolutely diabolical. The world building was amazing, I could literally picture myself on the ship and at the ports with the characters. The pacing was perfect, and the plot, phenomenal.
This was an amazing story and I am actually really sad that it's going to be a standalone. I want to go on more adventures with Elayna and Crimson!

"You can’t have courage without fear. Fear is the leg courage stands on."
This book was a fun read.
Elayna is the governor's daughter. She dreams of advancing her knowledge of the world, particularly in apothecary arts. Her father is unwell, and her mother is obsessed with appearances and maintaining their standing in high society. On a whim, she enters a bar she's never been to, and her fate is forever changed when she saves a pirate's life. He then strikes an accord, and the bone debt is born.
Elayna wants the freedom to live and make her own choices. She is smart and extremely tough, but she feels... human and relatable. I appreciated that Elayna's determination to help others comes from a deeply personal place. There's guilt beneath her compassion and a feminine rage that she channels into action.
Crimson is playful in a way that made me adore him immediately. He yearns deeply but respects Elayna. He's fiercely protective of those he cares about and is absolutely a "don't touch my effin wife" type of man. 🙌
The romance is more... instant chemistry versus insta-love. I thoroughly enjoyed how flirty Crimson is. Elayna is a very... guarded individual. The connection between Elayna and Crimson built slowly in a way that made me buy into it. Their banter made me laugh several times. I loved that Elayna was truly open to learning and helping with almost anything.
I will forever love a good found family, and this book has solid, interesting secondary characters. I absolutely adored Reed and the connection between him and Elayna.
I feel like some pieces were left open for interconnected books. I sure hope so. I would love to learn more about a particular... indebted character. The Rellmira duology happens in the same world of islands, so I hope we continue exploring this world Leah Mara has created.
I am grateful for the opportunity to read the ARC.
“I do so love to stop and taste the roses” “I think you mean smell.” “I really didn’t.”
