One audition. One million dollars. A competition unlike any other...
When Megan is selected for The Velvet Academy, an exclusive acting competition hidden in the hills outside Los Angeles, she tells herself it's the opportunity of a lifetime—and her way out from a fiancé she's desperate to escape.
But the remote academy doesn't just want her talent. It's studying her. Her memories, her fears, her grief. AI-generated scripts recreate moments only she should know. Contestants who fail leave permanently changed. And the deeper Megan goes, the more she realizes the competition was never about finding the best actor.
It was built to make sure no one ever says no again.
Her only ally is Brianna, another contestant who knows something is deeply wrong. But with a handler seducing her toward the point of no return and a mentor whispering that surrender is the only way to win, Megan is running out of time.
Because inside the Velvet Academy, the ones who don't comply don't just lose.
They get replaced.
Some doors, once opened, don't let you walk back out the same...
🤯Okay hold up Sara, you really got me. That one twist I did not see coming! This story is CREEPY in the best way possible. Think Black Mirror meets Black Swan.🖤🪞🦢
This incredible psychological thriller feels a little bit too close to what could actually happen someday in the future, where AI and other technological advancements take over. I was totally captivated by what was happening to Megan and the other girls at The Velvet Academy. I was tapping my Kindle furiously to get to the ending!
I really don’t want to say much more as I definitely feel that the less you know going in, the better. Did Megan sell her soul for fame and fortune? You definitely should read When Fame Means Blood to find out. The ending leaves space for another book to follow and I am here for it!
In a world where the expectation is to do anything to get ahead, Megan fights against the system, despite already agreeing to be a part of it. What follows is a psychological thriller of epic proportions that makes even the reader question whether the world is real or just what they want us to see.
This novel blends the "secret hidden society" theme with the more common tropes of a psychological thriller in a way that provides an excellent addition to the genre.

When Fame Means Blood is an immersive, twisty, and chilling thriller that absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.
Packed with terrifying moments and relentless suspense, this story is incredibly intense from beginning to end. The plot is dark, flawlessly executed, and filled with twists that kept me completely captivated. Sara Pucci’s writing is clever, gripping, and absolutely outstanding, making every chapter impossible to put down.
I was hooked from the very first page and never wanted the story to end. Every revelation pulled me deeper into the mystery, leaving me eager to discover what would happen next.
If you love dark, fast paced thrillers that keep you guessing until the very end, don’t miss this one! And the ending? Absolutely a masterpiece.
Thank you so much to Sara Pucci for the opportunity to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
This was a top-tier speculative thriller by Sara that was the perfect read for me as I flew through it during my holiday!
The novel starts off with our protagonist, Megan, running away from a life filled with abuse and despair, to a life she has always dreamed of, in the acting world! The Velvet Academy seems to be the answer to her wishes, but things begin to take a turn for the worst, in many ways, and Megan finds herself at the centre of something she, or the reader, could ever imagine!
I can't say too much about the plot of this one for fear of giving anything away (as there are plenty of twists!) But this book escalates massively, having everything from domestic thriller, psychological thriller, hugely speculative, black mirror-esque elements, and even quite cult-like tendencies in the way it depicts Hollywood!
Though a couple of the twists I found to be convenient in hindsight, they all still took me by surprise, which only added to the tension of this one! A very original thriller that fans of speculative fiction should most definitely pick up!
OMG Y'ALL!!!!! This is one of the best Psychological Thrillers I've read in 2026!!!!
If you love: * Hollywood Conspiracy Theories * Cult vibes * Al gone too far * Black mirror vibes * Mind control
This book is for YOU!!!
Imagine getting accepted into an elite acting academy... only to discover it knows your deepest fears, your darkest memories, and secrets no one else should.
The deeper you dig, the more you realize this isn't a place where stars are made, it's a place where people disappear, identities blur, and fame comes with a price far darker than anyone could imagine.
Would you chase your dream... if it meant risking your soul?
This book had my heart beating during the first chapter. I kept wanting to read more. The more I read, the more I became intrigued. Without giving away the storyline, the author does an amazing job of portraying how society wants you to be seen, and how you are actually seen. There’s twists I did NOT see coming. The only reason I am giving this 4 and not 5 stars is because I felt the ending few chapters were rushed. I can’t wait to see what is next to come. I definitely recommend this book and author.
An elite invitation, instant stardom, and a life transformed overnight. For Megan Cross, landing a spot at the hyper-exclusive Velvet Academy feels like the ultimate breakthrough, and the perfect opportunity to leave her toxic fiancé behind. Managed by the glamorous power couple Chris and Sienna Winters, the academy promises to mold a handful of talented young women into global icons.
But beneath the surface of high-profile parties, flawless smiles, and overnight internet fame lies a deeply unsettling, claustrophobic trap.
Monitored by mandatory smartwatches, suffocating regulations, and a bizarre fog where her own memories used to be, Megan quickly realizes that something is dangerously wrong. As she begins to uncover the dark reality hidden within the academy’s subterranean tunnels, the situation becomes increasingly dangerous.
The contestants who complete the program return as hollow, robotic shells of their former selves, and fellow contestant Brianna grows deeply suspicious of the academy, sensing that something is fundamentally wrong. It soon becomes clear that major success in the entertainment industry always comes with strings attached. Because inside this academy, surrendering your humanity isn’t just a metaphor, it’s a requirement.
When Fame Means Blood is a dark, twisty, and utterly unputdownable speculative thriller. It dives headfirst into the toxic underbelly of Hollywood and the terrifying prospect of losing your identity. From the first page, this thought-provoking mystery grabs hold of you, and the relentless pacing never lets up.
The story feels intensely modern while remaining terrifyingly plausible. It takes the Hollywood urban legends and conspiracy theories we hear about today and transforms them into a chilling nightmare. It makes you question how much of what we believe about society is actually true, and how much we’ve been taught to accept.
And that ending? My jaw literally dropped. When you reach the final pages and realize how everything has been connected from the very beginning, I just sat there thinking: Oh my God... what did I just read?
Got your ticket to the Velvet Academy yet?

Sara Pucci’s When Fame Means Blood stole an entire Saturday afternoon from me. I figured I’d read a few chapters before tackling the laundry, but the laundry waited…and waited. Famous Last Press and Sara Pucci, thank you so much for the gifted copy.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“How much of what we believe is actually true, and how much of it are we simply told to accept?”
The less you know going in, the better.
Megan sees the Velvet Academy as a way to leave her old life behind, and I completely understood why she’d take the chance. At first it almost feels glamorous. Then little things start happening that don’t make sense, and before long I was questioning every person she met.
Brianna was the character I kept hoping would be okay. She noticed things other people ignored, and every time she trusted her instincts I wanted Megan to listen.
This book played with my head in the best way. I’d read a chapter, decide I knew where the story was going, then the next chapter would prove me completely wrong. I actually laughed at myself more than once because I was so sure I’d figured it out.
What really stuck with me wasn’t just the mystery. It was the idea of how easily people can be manipulated when they’re promised something they desperately want. Add AI into the mix, and suddenly it didn’t feel quite as far-fetched as I’d like.
I also liked that the story never forgot its characters. Megan isn’t fearless. She second-guesses herself. She makes choices that had me wanting to yell at my Kindle, but they always felt believable.
By the time I reached the last fifty pages, there was no chance I was putting it down. Dinner could wait. Sleep could wait. I needed to know what was actually happening inside the Velvet Academy.
Then I hit the ending.
I just sat there.
No scrolling. No starting another book. Just staring at the wall thinking, “What did I just read?”
If you like psychological thrillers that lean into technology, conspiracy theories, Hollywood secrets, and stories that constantly make you question what’s real, I think you’ll have a lot of fun with this one.
Now tell me…what’s the last thriller that completely fooled you?
📚BOOK REVIEW📚 WHEN FAME MEANS BLOOD Sara Pucci Publishes 7/31/26 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to Sara Pucci for the opportunity to read an early copy (ARC) and for inviting me to be part of your street team. As always, all opinions are my own.
⸻ Megan thinks she’s finally found a way out when she’s invited to compete at the mysterious Velvet Academy, an elite acting competition with a million-dollar prize. But what begins as a dream opportunity quickly turns sinister as AI-generated scripts expose her deepest memories, contestants begin to change, and she realizes the academy isn’t looking for the next star. It’s looking for complete obedience.
When Fame Means Blood takes today’s conversations about AI, fame, and manipulation and turns them into a psychological thriller that feels a little too believable. The deeper Megan gets into the academy, the darker and more unsettling the story becomes.
The tension builds steadily, and I was constantly questioning everyone’s motives, even Megan’s. I couldn’t stop turning the pages because I had to know how it would end.
What really stuck with me was the way the story explores identity, ambition, and control. The AI element gives the story a modern edge that lingers long after the final page.
And that ending… it definitely left me wanting more. I’m hoping there’s a sequel because I’m not ready to leave this world just yet.
If you enjoy dark, fast-paced thrillers with plenty of twists, this is one to add to your TBR.
⸻ ✅ WHAT WORKED • Fresh, unique premise. • Suspense that kept me reading “just one more chapter.” • Megan’s emotional journey added depth. • Timely themes about AI, ambition, and fame. • An eerie, isolated setting.
⚠️ WHAT DIDN’T WORK • The middle slowed down a bit with a few repetitive challenges. • I wanted more of the Velvet Academy’s history.
First of all, Sara, what is this book? How are you sane after writing this book? I mean HOW?WHY?
I am totally speechless. The speed with which I have read this book ("needs some research" literal words of my parents ).
I took leave from my full time job to complete this book, i was so desperate and hooked up from the first chapter itself.
Amazing, hypnotic, grabbed my mind till the end and I am left with so many questions and Sara I need answers, shall I mail you separately? LOL
The storyline revolved around Meghan and The Velvet Academy. The twists, turns, dark, hypnotic and the extent of human imagination is stretched in a wonderful and chilling way. I may need to move from Romance Genre to Psychological thriller Genre. I was missing so much and Sara's writing brought back something that I have not felt in long time.
I won't share much spoilers, This book deserves it's own imagination by the readers and I loved this book. The start, the ending, and the whole storyline is so carefully and perfectly written, I am amazed truly.
I am going to pre-order it and this book is going to remain with me till i can read.
I would give 100 stars if I have any option to rate it.
Sara, salute to your mind and consider me the first one to order everything you will write.
🚨 This book left me with MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS... and I'm not okay. 🚨
🎭 When Fame Means Blood by Sara Pucci
Imagine getting invited to an elite acting academy... only to realize the academy knows your deepest fears, your memories, and secrets no one else should. 😳
This book was SO weird... in the best way possible.
It felt like Black Mirror met a psychological thriller with a sprinkle of dystopian horror, and I never knew who—or what—to trust. Every chapter had me thinking, "Okay, NOW I've figured it out," only for the story to completely prove me wrong.
The creepy atmosphere? ✔️
The mind games? ✔️
The paranoia? ✔️
The "WHAT IS HAPPENING?!" moments? ✔️✔️✔️
But can we talk about that ending?!
Because... WHAT?! 😭
I refuse to believe that's it. It genuinely feels like there's another book coming because I have SO MANY unanswered questions. I need closure. I need explanations. I need Part 2.
Sara Pucci... if you're reading this... please don't leave me hanging. 😂
📚 Read if you love: 🎬 Black Mirror vibes 🤖 AI gone too far 🧠 Psychological thrillers 😵 Plot twists that make your brain hurt 👀 Stories that leave you questioning everything
❓Did anyone else finish this and immediately wonder if there's going to be a sequel? Or am I the only one desperately searching for answers?
The Black Mirror vibes completely sold me on this book, but the Hollywood setting and psychological suspense kept me flying through the pages. From the opening chapters, Megan’s desperate escape from her abusive fiancé immediately had me invested, and once she arrived at Velvet Academy, I couldn’t stop reading.
The academy itself was incredibly unsettling. Every challenge seemed to blur the line between reality and manipulation, and I never knew what bizarre twist was coming next. The use of AI throughout the story felt eerily believable, adding another layer of tension that made everything even more unsettling. There were multiple moments where I genuinely had to stop and process what had just happened.
I also appreciated that beneath all the suspense, there were themes of control, identity, trauma, and the cost of fame. While the story definitely leans into speculative thriller territory, it never lost the emotional stakes that kept me rooting for Megan.
If you love stories that feel like an episode of Black Mirror, enjoy dark Hollywood settings, psychological thrillers, and books that constantly make you question what’s real, I highly recommend picking this one up.
I’m already looking forward to seeing where this series goes next.
Thank you to Sara Pucci for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I’ll first say thank you to Famous Last Press and Sara Pucci for the opportunity to read this ARC for When Fame Means Blood.
⭐⭐⭐.5 (3.5/5)
When Fame Means Blood had an intriguing premise that immediately caught my attention. The combination of celebrity culture, mystery, and suspense created a story that I was excited to dive into, and there were definitely moments where the tension kept me turning the pages.
That said, I found the pacing to be a bit uneven. The story took longer than I expected to really gain momentum, and there were sections that felt repetitive or overly detailed, making it difficult to stay fully invested. Once the mystery began unfolding, it became more engaging, but I never felt completely immersed.
The characters had interesting potential, though I struggled to form a strong connection with them emotionally. Their motivations occasionally felt underdeveloped, which made some of the bigger moments lose a bit of their impact. I did enjoy seeing the secrets unravel, and there were a few twists that kept me guessing.
Overall, this is a solid mystery with an original concept that I think some thriller fans will enjoy, even if it didn’t fully resonate with me. While it wasn’t a standout read for me personally, I appreciated the suspenseful atmosphere. Now will I continue to the next book when it comes out?… Honestly probably not.
Thank you to NetGalley and Famous Last Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When Fame Means Blood had such an intriguing premise, and it immediately caught my attention with its blend of psychological thriller and Black Mirror-style sci-fi. Megan Cross is invited to join the prestigious Velvet Academy for an elite acting competition, but it quickly becomes clear that there's something much darker going on beneath the surface.
The opening chapter is fantastic and hooked me from the very beginning. I also really enjoyed the commentary on fame, social media, and the darker side of Hollywood. In today's world, where online personas can hide so much and celebrity culture often has a sinister edge, the story felt relevant and believable.
The pacing dipped slightly for me in the middle, and while the ending was gripping, it felt a little abrupt and left me more questions than answers. There were also a couple of moments where I had to suspend my disbelief, but they didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
Overall, this is a creative and suspenseful thriller with an original concept that fans of speculative fiction and psychological suspense are likely to enjoy. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the second book in the series.
Megan Cross, desperate for an escape from an abusive relationship with her fiancé Jamie, stakes all her hope on her application to the elusive acting school / competition The Velvet Academy, where 30 students battle in an elimination style showdown for the final prize, the chance to win a million dollar Hollywood contract.
After finding out she's one of the lucky 30, Megan abandons Jamie for the chance at stardom, but how far will she bend to the academies strange requests before she breaks?
I went fully into When Fame Means Blood expecting a thriller that's a satire of the traditional reality show competition genre, but what I got was a shocking, unflinching horror that rips off the mask of society and what we allow people to do for us to be comfortable and the lengths people will endure for a shot at the big leagues.
Absolutely gripping from the start to the finish, When Fame Means Blood had me on the edge of my seat and fully unable to put it down until i came to the gritty conclusion.
If you're a fan of The Substance, Black Mirror and The Compound, you owe it to yourself to read When Fame Means Blood!
3 stars for being interesting enough to keep me until the very end
Synopsis Megan joins the mysterious Velvet Academy, an exclusive acting competition offering a life-changing cash prize. But as the challenges grow increasingly unsettling and AI-generated scripts blur the line between performance and reality, she realizes the academy is hiding something far more sinister than a simple competition.
Commentary The concept was what sold me on this book, and I think it's where the story shines the most. The Velvet Academy gave me major Black Mirror vibes with a touch of The Stepford Wives, and I had so much fun trying to piece together the mystery behind the competition. The first half had me completely hooked.
The second half didn't hit quite the same for me. I found myself more interested in the initial premise at large than the direction the story ultimately took, so the ending wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped. Still, if you enjoy psychological thrillers with unsettling tech and a creepy atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try.
When Fame Means Blood- A thriller full of suspense, twists and a story presented behind the scenes of fame and AI conversation. I was hooked from page one and as I love thrillers, this book did not disappoint at all. The suspense is intense and the story is very well written. It made me question what people are willing to accept and do for fame as well as how much someone can fight for truth and the right things. The story portraits true friendship as well as family betrayal. The main female character not only is running from someone or something, she wants to start something new and prove herself. But is that the right choice? The answer is in between the pages of When Fame Means Blood. If you like thrillers with twists and unexpected ending, this book is definitely for you. And to quote the author, "How much of what we believe is actually true, and how much of it we are simply told to accept?"
Thank you Sara for giving me the opportunity to read your book before it’s released into the world.
Megan Cross is a young woman who wants to escape an abusive relationship and finally decides to make the move. She was just selected for the Velvet Academy that helps mold women to become actresses and ready for Hollywood.
As she begins the academy she tries to do everything right and be the best she can be; even if she has the fake it. She soon befriends another contestant, Brianna. As they get deeper in the program, there is something that continues to feel off and not right. The academy is designed to make you perfect no matter what.
This is such a unique concept and it felt very well written. Although I did enjoy Megan’s character, I couldn’t connect with any of the other characters as much. The beginning felt very seamless, however, I gel the middle part start to become a bit repetitive. The plot felt very fast at some point when Megan was interacting with the other girls. However, some parts of the plot felt disconnected.
Overall, I felt like this was such a fun unique read, definitely someone who enjoys shows like Black Mirror or a twist on reality.
I need to rethink everything now. After finishing this dark and haunting book, I am no longer the same person. Seeing how every occupation is being affected by AI, our near future could very well resemble what the author described. The story truly played with my mind. The dread did not come from crimes happening behind the scenes in Hollywood; instead, it came from the possibility of unwanted procedures happening casually in front of everyone. These horrors hide in plain sight, masked by beauty secrets and the demands of the entertainment industry. This story has left me speechless, proving the truth behind the saying: everything is not what it seems. These thoughts are of my own, and seriously giving just star ratings won't do any justice with what I have felt after reading this book. Great work!! I'll be eagerly waiting for the second book in the series. This was my first speculative fiction with a mix of techonology but definitely not the last. 🤯😉
⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5/5) When Fame Means Blood is unlike anything I've read before, and that's what kept me turning the pages. The unique concept had me constantly wondering where the story was heading, and I really enjoyed following Megan as the main character. The book started off strong and immediately pulled me in, but I felt it lost a little momentum through the middle. Then, just as things began to pick up again, the ending arrived a little more abruptly than I was expecting. That said, I did enjoy how the story wrapped up, even though it's been left open for what could come next. While this isn't as fast-paced as the thrillers I usually gravitate towards, it still offered an original and engaging read. If you're looking for something a little different with an intriguing premise, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try.
This was a ride. I was intrigued by the competition to become an actress and wasn’t sure how the “speculative fiction” would tie in. I was definitely surprised by that aspect as well as the other twists. As is typical, I wanted to yell at Megan to make better choices, but also think she made the best choices in the moment. Since it was a competition, I wasn’t expecting Megan to create a solid friendship, especially in the short time frame, but I really liked Brianna and how she stood by Megan even when Megan made it difficult. I almost wish we had a bit more time with the bad guys to understand their motivations (though maybe not understanding makes it scarier!). I really enjoyed the world that was build and I’m glad there will be another book, because I want to see what else is going on there!
Megan Cross is a young woman who wants to escape an abusive relationship and finally decides to make the move. She joins the mysterious Velvet Academy, an exclusive acting competition offering a life-changing cash prize. But as the challenges grow increasingly unsettling and AI-generated scripts blur the line between performance and reality, she realizes the academy is hiding something far more sinister than a simple competition.
This book took was a wild ride. I did enjoy how the story wrapped up, even though it's been left open for what the author has to come.
Overall, this is an inventive and suspenseful thriller. Fans who enjoys shows like Black Mirror and psychological suspense are likely to love it.
An immersive and thought-provoking read that explores the true cost of fame and the many faces of the entertainment industry. The story offers a compelling glimpse behind the curtain of wealth and celebrity, prompting readers to question what really happens out of the public eye and whether everything presented in the media should be taken at face value. The sci-fi and AI elements add an intriguing layer, serving as a reminder of how our world could evolve in the coming years.
Wow this is so different to anything else I've ever read, and in the best possible way too!
It will keep you questioning "what is actually going on here?" All the way through! And just when you think you have it sussed, nope you were no where near right!
Super intriguing!! In fact even when you find out what is going on, you'll think..no way! Then you'll ponder could this actually happen? The answer is... most likely and thats terrifying!!!
I was hooked on the first chapter with this book as I wanted to know where it went, I thought it was very cleverly written with showing how the use of AI can take over so easily ect & that’s quite scary!
I didn’t quite expect that ending though that did shock me!!
Thank you to Sara for my arc copy of this book, the cover is absolutely eye catching too I love it!
This completely blew me away, I couldn't put it down. Fast-paced from the very first chapter, it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. As a speculative thriller, it asks a chilling question: how far would you go to get everything you've ever wanted? It really makes you question the world of Hollywood, fame, ambition, and the price some people are willing to pay for success. The twists genuinely had my mind spinning, and I flew through the pages desperate for answers. If you love thrillers that keep you guessing and leave you thinking long after you've finished, this is one to add to your TBR. I already need book two! 💚📚
This book took me for a wild ride. Megan is such a good character, with a haunting past. She makes you question what’s real. I really enjoyed this read ❤️
