🤯Okay hold up Sara, you really got me. That one twist I did not see coming! This story is CREEPY in the best way possible. Think Black Mirror meets Black Swan.🖤🪞🦢
This incredible psychological thriller feels a little bit too close to what could actually happen someday in the future, where AI and other technological advancements take over. I was totally captivated by what was happening to Megan and the other girls at The Velvet Academy. I was tapping my Kindle furiously to get to the ending!
I really don’t want to say much more as I definitely feel that the less you know going in, the better. Did Megan sell her soul for fame and fortune? You definitely should read When Fame Means Blood to find out. The ending leaves space for another book to follow and I am here for it!

This was waaaaay darker than I was expecting it to be and I LOVED it! The whole concept of an elite acting academy was really cool, but from early on you start to suspect that maybe everything isn't what it seems. There were twists upon twists in this book but every single one added to the story and created tension and made me want to keep reading. There are themes of AI use that are used really interestingly to build the story.
I don't want to say too much because honestly this is one of those books that you just have to experience for yourself, I feel like this story will be rattling around my head for a long time. Can't wait for the next installment in the series!

When Megan receives her invite to the Velvet Academy an exclusive acting competion she thinks it’s the answer to escaping her abusive situation and building a new life. But all is not as it seems at the academy. Mysterious messages appearing on her smart watch, memory gaps and strange rituals.
I love a near future speculative fiction and this book was a such a good example a great mix of mystery, thriller, horror and sci-fi. I thought the elements of ai were interesting and so relevant in today’s age. How much of life should be managed and controlled by AI? When has it gone too far.
The pacing and writing were excellent I felt as anxious and stressed throughout as Heather and she struggles to put all the pieces together.

In a world where the expectation is to do anything to get ahead, Megan fights against the system, despite already agreeing to be a part of it. What follows is a psychological thriller of epic proportions that makes even the reader question whether the world is real or just what they want us to see.
This novel blends the "secret hidden society" theme with the more common tropes of a psychological thriller in a way that provides an excellent addition to the genre.

We follow our FMC Megan as she leaves an abusive relationship and joins an acting competition at the Velvet Academy. I deeply connected with Megan, she’s endured immense trauma that persisted even as she strives to build a better life.
The novel explores the conversations around fame, social media and the future of AI. It highlights how people are expected to be machines, unaffected by external factors that might influence their performance. We’re expected to be emotionless, functioning like machines bowing to the higher powers.
I also appreciated how much the author showcases AI advancing. While, no one seems to view it as a societal detriment or a threat to jobs and art. People and businesses today see it as a way to save money. This could be through using it for answering machines, simple searches replacing Google or creating posters. However, the long term effects are going to be truly unimaginable!
The pacing occasionally felt uneven, making it difficult to see where the plot was going. However, when the action kicked in, I was captivated.

When Fame Means Blood by Sara Pucci was a unique and thought-provoking read that blended psychological thriller elements with some very relevant questions about fame, beauty, technology, and the pressure to be perfect.
The story follows Megan, an aspiring actress who is given the opportunity to compete at the mysterious Velvet Academy, where contestants are competing for a chance at fame and a life-changing prize. What initially seems like an incredible opportunity quickly becomes something much more unsettling as Megan begins to realize just how much the entertainment industry expects people to sacrifice in order to fit its idea of the "perfect" star.
One of the things I appreciated most about this book was the message underneath the thriller. It explores our obsession with youth, beauty, fame, AI, and constantly keeping up with the newest technology, while asking an interesting question: How much of yourself are you willing to change—or give up—in order to be considered perfect?
I also thought the use of technology and the way the Academy attempts to create the ideal, completely compliant version of its contestants was a fascinating concept. It takes some of the pressures that already exist in Hollywood and celebrity culture and pushes them to an unsettling extreme.
While there were parts of the story that didn't completely work for me and I would have liked a little more development in certain areas, I was invested enough that I genuinely wanted to know what was happening and how everything would play out. The concept kept me curious, and the book definitely gave me things to think about after I finished it.
The ending also left me feeling like there is plenty of room for this world to continue, and I could easily see this becoming the beginning of a series. I would be interested to see where the author takes the story next.

Except... that is not exactly the full story. So when Megan Cross, an aspiring actress, receives an invite, she is more than thrilled to have the chance to for fame. Not to mention she will finally escape the clutches of her emotionally abusive partner, Jamie. But as Megan gets a few days into the program, run by husband-wife team Sienna and Chris Winters, she begins to wonder what is happening to the girls at the Velvet Academy and why some of them just look and seem... to perfect.

Wow. Just wow! I love a speculative/near future thriller and this one gave major Black Mirror vibes, combined with a very disturbing Next Top Model, but creepy. I loved Megan's character as a fighter who just wouldn't give up once she figured out the truth of the Academy. The way the author plugged a possible near-future AI Hollywood was so believable and really made me question things I even see now both online and on screen. If you love a heart-pounding thriller that leaves you with a major twist and cliffhanger, this is definitely one to pick up!

This book! Wow, what a book! I absolutely could not put it down. (Okay, I did put it down when I had to participate in real life, but I did so begrudgingly.)
The plot held my attention throughout which is saying a lot for a book being as I get distracted all the time. Not once throughout When Fame Means Blood did my focus waver. I found myself heavily invested in what would happen to Meghan and if she would truly ever be safe especially somewhere freaky like the Velvet Academy. (I won’t go into too much detail because the less you know, the more you will love this book. Let’s just say this book touches upon a popular conspiracy theory about Hollywood.)
The pacing is fast, but not in a way where you can’t keep up with all that’s going on. It’s fast as in you can’t put this book down and your mind will hang on each and every word fast. I felt as if I couldn’t read it fast enough. It was that good!
I felt as if the main characters we read about are fleshed out enough although I would have loved to hear more about Brianna’s backstory. As for Meghan, I found her backstory to be a tad bit confusing. I felt as if we only learn a very superficial amount of what happened to Meghan and her family which left me confused although there are other books coming out in this series, so the author could have been a bit evasive about Meghan’s past on purpose. However, I still was able really enjoy this story despite the lack of Meghan’s backstory.
All in all, When Fame Means Blood will keep you on the edge of your seat hungrily devouring each word to know what happens next. With interesting characters and a solid plot, this book will keep you up late waiting to see what happens next.

This story is about our FMC "Megan Cross" who has been engaged to her fiance"Jamie". Megan is about to get married to Jamie. Being to be a bride her life should be exciting, full of colours & love but she is living the perfect opposite life.😭

When Fame Means Blood is a dystopian/scifi thriller by Sara Pucci. This is my first book by this author, so I had no clue what to expect. All I knew was the blurb sounded right up my alley!
The first few pages had me hooked! Sara Pucci knows how to grab a reader, that's for sure. It had me on edge throughout. The thought of how far AI could go in the future scared the heck out of me!
We follow Megan, a young woman who is given the chance of a lifetime. She gets an invitation to The Velvet Academy to take part in an exclusive acting competition. She sees this as her new start and grabs it with both hands. It is only when things become horrifyingly personal that she begins to think maybe everything isn't as rosy as she thought!
Megan was a character I felt for. Her situation I could totally understand. The desperation to have a new life is almost palpable. The more I read, the more my heart sank. I was right by Megan's side as the story unfolded and it started to become more insidious as I read.

Even the conclusion had my jaw dropping! I am hoping we get another book by this author and soon! A thrilling, tense and thought-provoking read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys being scared of the possibilities of the future!

This was a great example of world building in a thriller novel. It will remind you of Black Mirror (and if you're old enough - the Twilight Zone ;-) It's all the AI horror you've heard of and imagined creeping into your life. And it's also a treatise on the unreal expectations of Hollywood, beauty standards, and the crisis of women not having each other's backs. And that ending? It will blow you away!

This was a top-tier speculative thriller by Sara that was the perfect read for me as I flew through it during my holiday!
The novel starts off with our protagonist, Megan, running away from a life filled with abuse and despair, to a life she has always dreamed of, in the acting world! The Velvet Academy seems to be the answer to her wishes, but things begin to take a turn for the worst, in many ways, and Megan finds herself at the centre of something she, or the reader, could ever imagine!
I can't say too much about the plot of this one for fear of giving anything away (as there are plenty of twists!) But this book escalates massively, having everything from domestic thriller, psychological thriller, hugely speculative, black mirror-esque elements, and even quite cult-like tendencies in the way it depicts Hollywood!
Though a couple of the twists I found to be convenient in hindsight, they all still took me by surprise, which only added to the tension of this one! A very original thriller that fans of speculative fiction should most definitely pick up!

I couldn't put this book down! When Fame Means Blood by Sara Pucci is an absolute masterpiece of near-future psychological suspense. The premise immediately hooked me: an elite acting competition at the secluded Velvet Academy that uses cutting-edge AI to manipulate the contestants' deepest, most private memories.
The character development for Megan was phenomenal—her desperation to escape her past and her relentless ambition made her instantly relatable, even when the stakes turned deadly. Her alliance with Brianna added so much heart and tension to the story as they both realized the sinister truth behind the competition. Watching AI weaponize personal trauma created a claustrophobic, high-concept atmosphere that kept me guessing until the final page.
The pacing is super fast, the plot twists are completely unpredictable, and the social commentary on modern technology and visibility hits home. If you love dark thrillers, Hollywood suspense, or tech-driven dramas, you need to read this immediately! Highly recommend

This was such an intense and creative book! I was hooked by the premise and really enjoyed the way the author slowly built the tension and kept me questioning what was actually happening. The writing was so vivid that I genuinely felt like I was there with Megan, experiencing everything alongside her. I also thought the concept was really interesting and unlike anything I've read before. The pacing picked up a little too quickly toward the end for me. After such a steady buildup, I wanted a bit more time to explore some of the reveals and see everything fully play out. Still, I was invested in the story and couldn't stop reading once things started coming together. Overall, this was a unique and gripping thriller. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author! 4.25 stars.

I'm starting at the end because what do you mean, the story just...stopped?! I have to wait for the sequel? Why would anyone do this?! It wasn't even like it was a painful cliffhanger; it was a good ending for the book, but I NEED MORE. I was so caught up in this world and I really wasn't ready for it to end.
This book is the lovechild of 'dark side of Hollywood' and some dystopian mind control nightmare that feels worthy of Black Mirror. I bet it would make a fantastic television series! It's uncomfortable and unnerving, full of not so much twists but reveals that just slap you in the face while you're reading.
Without spoilers, I really love the main character's evolution throughout the story: the way her experiences change and shape her is both brilliant and horrible. I really can't wait for book two!

This book had my heart beating during the first chapter. I kept wanting to read more. The more I read, the more I became intrigued. Without giving away the storyline, the author does an amazing job of portraying how society wants you to be seen, and how you are actually seen. There’s twists I did NOT see coming. The only reason I am giving this 4 and not 5 stars is because I felt the ending few chapters were rushed. I can’t wait to see what is next to come. I definitely recommend this book and author.

This is one of those unique books that will immediately pull you in and keep you turning the pages! Megan’s journey makes such an impact on the story, and with all the suspense woven throughout, this was a book I found hard to put down.
Inside the Velvet Academy, the ones who don’t comply don’t just lose—they face much bigger consequences. If the idea of what the future could hold for AI intrigues you, I think you’ll really enjoy this one!

This was a ride. I was intrigued by the competition to become an actress and wasn’t sure how the “speculative fiction” would tie in. I was definitely surprised by that aspect as well as the other twists. As is typical, I wanted to yell at Megan to make better choices, but also think she made the best choices in the moment. Since it was a competition, I wasn’t expecting Megan to create a solid friendship, especially in the short time frame, but I really liked Brianna and how she stood by Megan even when Megan made it difficult. I almost wish we had a bit more time with the bad guys to understand their motivations (though maybe not understanding makes it scarier!).
I really enjoyed the world that was build and I’m glad there will be another book, because I want to see what else is going on there!

I love a good creative story and this read is exactly that: AI, conspiracies, Hollywood secrets. The author has talent! She effortlessly brings scenes to life through beautiful writing. Raw human emotion captured perfectly on paper.
Towards the end I did get a little confused, in a way mirroring the main character’s mind as the twisted lies began to unfold. I found myself with some questions and am very much looking forward to book 2 of The Spotlight Series. I’m rooting for the main character!
I’ll be thinking about this read long after finishing it. I highly recommend picking this up if you’re looking for a mind-bending speculative thriller!

The minute I saw the synopsis for this book I knew I could not get it soon enough. Thriller, check, Dystopian fiction? Oho check! Technothriller?? Take my money!! To say I had it read and digested within a week of getting it is an understatement. For lovers of a dark psychological thriller that is so plausible it is terrifying, this book is for you

Oh my life did this story slice to the bone! With the speed at which AI is developing and learning, with the explosion of the attention economy and with the balance of power of the world teetering on the brink, this novel went deep and I was physically shaken. Pucci has an incredible grasp of not only tech and the soceity in which it inhabits, but knows how to write to peoples fears and insecurities, their desires and greed and the lengths people will go to in order to achieve those goals
This is contemporary social observation and dystopian speculation blended in the most delicious way and I am here for it. I am thrilled to note that this is part one of a three book series (The Spotlight Series) and as such, Sara Pucci is going on my immediate buy list. I look forward to reading a lot more from her in the future!

Oh my life did this story slice to the bone! With the speed at which AI is developing and learning, with the explosion of the attention economy and with the balance of power of the world teetering on the brink, this novel went deep and I was physically shaken. Pucci has an incredible grasp of not only tech and the soceity in which it inhabits, but knows how to write to peoples fears and insecurities, their desires and greed and the lengths people will go to in order to achieve those goals
This is contemporary social observation and dystopian speculation blended in the most delicious way and I am here for it. I am thrilled to note that this is part one of a three book series (The Spotlight Series) and as such, Sara Pucci is going on my immediate buy list. I look forward to reading a lot more from her in the future!

The less you know going in, the better.
Megan sees the Velvet Academy as a way to leave her old life behind, and I completely understood why she’d take the chance. At first it almost feels glamorous. Then little things start happening that don’t make sense, and before long I was questioning every person she met.
Brianna was the character I kept hoping would be okay. She noticed things other people ignored, and every time she trusted her instincts I wanted Megan to listen.
This book played with my head in the best way. I’d read a chapter, decide I knew where the story was going, then the next chapter would prove me completely wrong. I actually laughed at myself more than once because I was so sure I’d figured it out.
What really stuck with me wasn’t just the mystery. It was the idea of how easily people can be manipulated when they’re promised something they desperately want. Add AI into the mix, and suddenly it didn’t feel quite as far-fetched as I’d like.
I also liked that the story never forgot its characters. Megan isn’t fearless. She second-guesses herself. She makes choices that had me wanting to yell at my Kindle, but they always felt believable.
By the time I reached the last fifty pages, there was no chance I was putting it down. Dinner could wait. Sleep could wait. I needed to know what was actually happening inside the Velvet Academy.
Then I hit the ending.
I just sat there.
No scrolling. No starting another book. Just staring at the wall thinking, “What did I just read?”
If you like psychological thrillers that lean into technology, conspiracy theories, Hollywood secrets, and stories that constantly make you question what’s real, I think you’ll have a lot of fun with this one.

The tension builds steadily, and I was constantly questioning everyone’s motives, even Megan’s. I couldn’t stop turning the pages because I had to know how it would end.
What really stuck with me was the way the story explores identity, ambition, and control. The AI element gives the story a modern edge that lingers long after the final page.
And that ending… it definitely left me wanting more. I’m hoping there’s a sequel because I’m not ready to leave this world just yet.
