Three Years Dead

Rate this book
When a good man… becomes a bad cop… but can’t remember why.

Following an attempt on his life, Detective Sergeant Martin Money wakes from a week-long coma with no memory of the previous three years. He quickly learns that corrupt practices got him demoted, violence caused his wife to divorce him, and his vices and anger drove his friends away one by one. On top of this, the West Yorkshire Police do not seem to care who tried to kill him, and he is offered a generous pay-out to retire.

But with a career lifeline offered by a former student of his, Martin takes up the case of a missing male prostitute, an investigation that skirts both their worlds, forcing him back into the run-down estates awash with narcotics, violence, and sex, temptations he must resist if he is to resume his life as the good man he remembers himself to be.

To stay out of jail, to punish whoever tried to kill him, and to earn his redemption, Martin attempts to unravel the circumstances of his assault, and—more importantly—establish why everyone from his past appears to be lying at every turn.

Author A. D. Davies follows up his acclaimed debut page turner “His First His Second” with this gritty, fast paced crime thriller, charting the dark places a corrupt cop will go to, to chase a past that nobody wants him to recall.

A.D. Davies grew up in Leeds, West Yorkshire. In high school his ambition was to be a writer of horror novels, although in adult life he became an avid fan of crime fiction. He also dabbles in action-adventure.

After a long stint in an unsatisfying job, he attended the University of Leeds where he attained a degree in creative writing.

He is well-travelled, his favourite destinations being New Zealand and Vietnam, which have influenced his writing immensely, especially obvious in his Adam Park novel.

For now, however, globe-trotting is taking a back-seat to raising his two children and writing, although he hopes to one day combine all three.

He now resides in Staffordshire, UK, with his wife and two children.

I am going to be one of the few that remains hesitant about this work.

It was a dark, gripping yet ultimately disheartening novel that started out as a shining beacon of hope & disintegrated into mournful proof that a leopard can never really change it's spots.
The book was engaging, gritty & well written, and you found yourself turning the pages quickly to find out what would happen next, but it did little to convince you of the incorruptibility (?) of humans. At the end of the novel you began to wonder whether the "good guys" or "bad guys" were the worst in relation to dishonesty & lack of ethics. It was one of the few books I've read that hasn't had a "happy" or positive ending, and as such left me with the feeling it finished unresolved.

Wow! This is a very dark story. It is about a cop who wakes from a coma to find that his boss wants him to immediately retire but won't say why. His friend, comes to the hospital and tries to give him drugs. To all of this the cop says no, he wants to return to policing. He is reassigned to track down a missing person but as he investigates, he finds many things that he doesn't remember of the last three years. He has done some terrible things, gotten too close to the criminals, joined a rogue cop group, beat up his wife and his partner. And, the things go on and on. He begins to find that while he is looking for the missing person, he is finding that it is all about what he did that he has forgotten. The story is complicated and quite violent but I couldn't put it down. I gave it three stars to show that it wasn't as good, in my opinion, as the Adam Park series but it was still very good. The author is a great writer of these mysteries and keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to the end. A very good book.

Wow! What a ride. A protagonist that you really love to hate. After being stabbed and pulled out of the icy river waters, he wakens in a hospital with 3 years of his prior life missing from his memory. Within a short time, he figures out that those 3 years of his life were spent on the take and doing deeds no respectable copper should be doing. As a District Inspector that has been demoted to District Sargent, he sets out to prove that he isn't the man everyone believes he’s become. Yet drugs, prostitutes, strong-arm tactics, and looking the other way quickly become his modus operandi once again. Well written plot with many twists. The characters come to life in your mind. A great suspenseful thriller by an outstanding new author. Highly recommended and looking to more from A. D. Davies. I received a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review and that’s exactly what I gave.

Martin Money, a cop from Leeds, wakes in the hospital with severe stab wounds and no recollection of the past three years. His career working DOMU is over, his body is in need of some serious rehabbing, and Julie (once his wife) filed for divorce after a series of documented violent altercations Martin can’t seem to remember taking place. From the moment he comes to, Martin is forced to reconcile the ‘Dead Time’, those three years he can’t recall, with this new reality, and the man he knew he used to be with the man people keep saying he was.
Best parts:
Martin’s smart-ass remarks
Realistically gritty cop drama
Short, fast-paced chapters (All meat and potatoes)
Plot that gets darker and more twisted with each page
Murder, intrigue and the like

Worst parts:
The urge to skim ten or so pages to get the next few pieces of a frustratingly captivating puzzle

I got a free copy from A D Davies for a honest review. This book is about cop Martin Money waking up from 3 years in a coma after being stabbed and nearly drowned. He finds out that he is not a good cop that he thinks he is. He then tries to be. He is a corrupt copper and also beat up his now ex wife. He persuades them to let him come back on the force to investigate the disappearance of Si Larson. He comes across his acquaintances in his 'dark time'. and along the way what happened to himself. This is a gritty police drama, not your normal run of the mill. With talk if corruption, drugs and prostitution. This a well written and it will keep you hooked to the end.

I received a free download of this book from Story Cartel, thank you!
I enjoyed the book a great deal. The several twists and turns in the plot line kept me entertained throughout. Almost every time I thought I had something figured out, I was either completely wrong, or I was sort of right, but the motive was totally not what I thought it was.
I can't imagine what it would be like to wake up from a coma and find out that you are not who you think.
I would recommend this story for readers who enjoy thriller and drama fiction.

I really enjoyed the first 2/3s of this book but then the last bit lost me. I didn't find the resolution convincing. The book was well written and the characters were well-developed, but by the end I thought the premise was far-fetched.

However, I will check out this author's other books because of the writing quality.

Gritty real life feeling detective story. Not the usual run of the mill good guy wins against all odds type of novel. Author has portrayed the life of a corrupted "copper" with all of the good, bad and ugly that goes with it. Yet, maybe the scales balanced in the end. Well done
