Montclair: A Thorns, Feathers & Bones Novella

Rate this book
As the noble houses of Vyrune gather beneath the shadow of ancient rites, two young women find their lives drawn toward the same dark center.

Sabine Delamere serves as Factor to Marquis Damien de Montclair, a man as revered as he is feared. As the past he buried begins to surface, her loyalty is tested by revelations that threaten everything she believes about the man she serves.

Elsewhere, Winifred, a quiet baker's daughter who often sees what others cannot, is chosen for a fate she does not fully understand. As the veil concealing Vyrune's oldest secrets begins to fray, she is forced to confront the horrors hidden beneath the kingdom's beauty and tradition.

But behind velvet courts, sacred ceremonies, and whispered politics, something ancient stirs within Vyrune... and history itself may not be as dead as the kingdom pretends.

A gothic entry into the world of Thorns, Feathers & Bones, Montclair blends the regal decadence of Anne Rice with the atmospheric fantasy of Patrick Rothfuss. Steeped in old blood, dangerous loyalties, and histories too terrible to die, it is a dark fantasy where beauty and ruin walk hand in hand, and where the past refuses to remain buried.

5 ⭐️ What a novella 👏🏽 The timing was honestly perfect, because I just finished TF&B a month prior and since then, I have been craving more!

Montclair was dark, moody and atmospheric. The setting was lush and rich... I honestly didn't expect anything less from Frost. His ability to transport you into a story and capture your full attention is exceptional.

We were introduced to some new characters and let me just say... DAMIEN!!! Heck even SABINE!!! Oh, I need more of them! There were Easter eggs that were dropped and I loved the connection to TF&B. There were a couple of jaw dropping moments as well and now I am DYING for the next novella and book 2!

It's really hard to talk about the Thorns Saga without spoiling anything, so just trust me when I say that you HAVE to read this series! It's some of the best Fantasy I've read in a while. Anderson W. Frost does not hold your hand, so you have to keep up and be prepared for the journey! If you're an intermediate to advanced fantasy reader, I'm confident that you will LOVE this novella and saga 🙌🏽 Well done, AWF! 👏🏽

If you’re looking for a gothic novella that grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go… read Montclair.

Montclair by Anderson Frost is exactly what I want from a dark gothic novella.

From the very first page, this story pulled me in and refused to let go. It has that rare quality where you tell yourself, “Just one more chapter,” only to realize you’ve reached the end far sooner than you wanted.

The characters are beautifully crafted. Anderson Frost reveals just enough about them to make you deeply invested while preserving an air of mystery that keeps you wanting more. Their fears, grief, anger, frustration, and thirst for vengeance all feel incredibly authentic. At the same time, their hope, longing, dreams, and yearning make them feel profoundly human.

The storytelling is exceptional. Every scene feels intentional, and the gothic atmosphere wraps around you until you’re completely immersed in the world.

My only complaint?

It’s too short.

Not because it lacks substance, but because I wasn’t ready to leave these characters behind. The ending perfectly sets up what’s to come and left me desperately needing the next installment.

If you’re a fan of dark gothic fiction filled with mystery, emotion, and beautifully layered characters, Montclair is absolutely worth your time.

📖 Add Montclair to your TBR immediately!!!

Another hit from Anderson W. Frost!

Montclair is a perfect addition to the world of Thorns, Feathers & Bones. It has that same immersive, layered feeling I loved in the first book, but with a darker, more gothic atmosphere that completely pulled me in. The world feels rich with history and secrets, and I loved the way the story slowly reveals what is really happening beneath all the beautiful ceremonies, noble houses, and traditions.

Sabine and Winifred are both fantastic characters, and I loved following their separate stories as they were gradually drawn toward the same mystery. Sabine’s loyalty and growing doubts kept me invested in her storyline, while Winifred’s strange ability to see what others cannot added this wonderful sense of unease and mystery. And, of course, the more I learned about Montclair himself and the secrets surrounding him, the more questions I had. There is something so compelling about a story where you know there is something wrong beneath the surface, but you have no idea just how deep it goes.

The atmosphere in this book is fantastic. It’s dark, mysterious, and just a little unsettling, with ancient magic and buried history lurking beneath everything. I loved getting to explore another part of this world, and if anything, Montclair left me even more curious about Vyrune and the stories still waiting to be told.

If you loved Thorns, Feathers & Bones, you absolutely need to read Montclair. And if this is a taste of what’s still hiding in this world, I am very much ready for more!

With all due respect, get your A$$ back here Mr Frost 😂

That was so good! My brain was in over drive looking for the connections and figuring out where this side story was leading and how it connects to book 1 and leads into book 2.

There are so many intricate moving parts to this world and this book is so poetically written, I can’t get enough.

I do feel like I need a character recap and cheat sheet. I need to sit down to talk about it.

That’s it time for a re-read of Thorns Feathers and Bones.

Well what a treat this was!! I absolutely love these new characters, they were incredibly interesting and have so many layers to who they are and their roles in this world. I know we are just scratching the surface of these characters and i am truly looking forward to more of them. The way Anderson Frost merged these characters and plot line into Thorns, Feathers and Bones was pure magic. I will say there was one part where my mouth dropped open at the identity reveal of a certain prisoner, I was not expecting that one but man was it perfect! I am going to be marinating on all things Montclair and TFB before we get the next book in the saga. Thank you Mr. frost for the book and allowing me the early access to this incredible world and story you are building, I am honored to be a part of this journey!

5 stars, just like Thorns, Feathers and Bones was for me. Sometimes novellas can feel a bit too short for me and leave me feeling incomplete, but not this one. The setting is mysterious and moody and we are introduced to some fantastic characters in this world that have their stories get intertwined beautifully. I had no idea what was coming and had me gasping a couple of times. I am now inspired to do a reread of book #1 to stay immersed in this world a little longer. I cannot wait for the next one to come out! Definitely recommend reading both this and Thorns, Feathers and Bones 100%.

Montclair hooked me from the very first page. Even as a novella, it never felt rushed. The characters have surprising depth, and I found myself genuinely invested in them almost immediately.

One of my favorite things about this author’s writing is the way he sets a scene. Every location feels vivid and immersive, making it easy to picture everything unfolding like a movie in your head. It’s the kind of storytelling that pulls you completely into the world.

My only complaint? It ended too soon! I wanted so much more time with these characters—especially Damien. I was thrilled to see the hint that they’ll be returning in the next book because I’m already counting down to it.

If this is just the beginning, I can’t wait to see where the story goes next. And seriously… I need more Damien!

If you’ve read his first book, Thorns, Feathers & Bones you’ll pick up on some things and it starts to connect some dots and in the same breath makes you wanna scream and throw the book lol. But if you haven’t read it, this a great start to the world and then reading TFAB will completely pull you in!

A beautifully written expansion of the Thorns, Feathers and Bones universe! Anderson’s Montclair is a dark morally grey fantasy told in his signature style of expertly intertwining the fates of multiple characters within a world shrouded in secrets and the dark machinations of powers beyond mortal understanding.
