1 1/2 stars, because there are zombies in here, and some of them are bloody. Otherwise, this is not a book I bloody well liked.

For a romance, the story left a lot to be desired. Retta moved from a wheel-chair bound fiancé, to being raped by the preacher's son, to sex with the sexy stranger Jasper, to a 10-week pregnancy. As a romantic lead character, I couldn't empathize with her one bit.

For a zombie story, there were also a lot of elements that missed for me. The sanctuary that Retta finds herself in at the beginning of the book has a lot of potential that is never fully developed. The 'harvest' is a cool concept - didn't "The Walking Dead" do something like this? - but it's resolved in two pages by a weird chick in a school bus with an odd motivation to save rape victims but not 5-year-old little kids. Huh? This is just one story element that disappointed me as a reader.

Unfortunately, I found myself skimming whole passages, hoping the story would get better and that I would find some redeeming qualities in my read. It's a shame that I did not.

considering kaylee was looking from her jail cell, stoked a 14-17 year sentence was only 3 when her 2015 sentencing came through- she realized it was nice her sons dad let her talk to her son weekly. he didnt have to do that. she was such a superior parent she would get out, get her son back instantly and begin off right where she left off- criminally conspiring to destroy the man she hated, as he left her 11 years earlier for being crude, hateful and cheating on him. he did have sex with aunt lindsay, but still- thats besides the point. he did LEGALLY show her porn hidden in websites many knew nothing of, and what if her mom secretly were found amidst old pages too? life is a trip, and sometimes its ok to congregate massive assaults on a childs father, as long as you have the right team (dirty cops, medical affiliation and money to cause incentive)... yep. life is going to go smoothly for her in her stealing a big hit- 50,000,000- or is it?

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The Review:
I don’t have extensive experience with zombie novels, but as a fan of The Walking Dead, I was very excited to read this one. However, I had issues from the beginning. The writing seemed immature at times, and the characters, while entertaining, were unrealistic. For instance, Retta has been repeatedly raped yet seems to carry little psychological baggage as a result. In fact, during her escape from her captor, she stops to compliment the “so handsome” Jasper while kissing his neck and rubbing his “dripping with sweat” biceps. Often I felt this novel was more soap opera than survival, and as it progresses, it becomes even more so (SPOILER ALERT) complete with an escaped mental patient and a mad scientist hell-bent on world domination.

When I was approached about reviewing this novel, I downloaded my copy directly from Amazon since at the time the novel was free on the site, and I was quite taken aback by the number of errors. The copy I downloaded is, unfortunately, much more like an ARC (advanced review copy) than a polished novel. It's in desperate need of a proofreader. Not only were there numerous missing words and "extra" words, but there was at least one instance of the use of an incorrect character name.

So this wasn't a bad book per se...

This was interesting enough to read in one sitting at least. Suspenseful. Gruesome. Not a whole lot of character development. I think I kept reading because I was grossly intrigued. The book needs to be edited. Missing or wrong words. Missing punctuation. A few swear words. Gore. Mentions of sex, but the act is not really described. I can't recommend this to anyone.
