Long but worth it review lol:
When I first started this book, I thought, “Okay, this is going to be a cute, quick rom-com with a curvy girl.” I expected body image issues, some laughs, some romance… and honestly, I thought I knew exactly where the story was going, hallmarky vibes.
I was right but also so wrong.
This book surprised me.
I think a lot of people are going to look at this and assume it’s just a fun little rom-com, and it is!! It’s sweet, funny, and such an easy read. But if you let it, it can be so much more than that.
I truly feel like Cai was written for me.
I saw so much of myself in her that there were moments she actually annoyed me… and then I realized it was because I related to her so much. It’s so easy to look at someone else and think, “Girl… you’re overthinking this and being stupid.” But when those same thoughts are your own, they feel so real. Seeing her internal dialogue felt like someone had somehow gotten inside my own head.
What I loved most was that this book didn’t just make me think about what I don’t have, it made me appreciate what I do have. I may not have a family like Cai’s, but I have a chosen family that would show up for me the way hers does. That realization honestly hit me harder than I expected.
I even found myself thinking that maybe I’m in the process of meeting my own Sonny. Whether my story ends the way Cai’s does or not, this book gave me so much hope. It reminded me that anxiety has a way of convincing us that the stories we’re telling ourselves are the truth, even when the people who love us see something completely different.
Reading this while on my first solo trip, just after celebrating a milestone birthday, made the experience even more special. It honestly felt like this book found me at exactly the right time in my life.
I’m sure every reader will take something different away from this story, but for me, it made me reflect on my anxiety, the way I see myself versus the way other people see me, and how much courage it takes to believe you’re worthy of being loved exactly as you are.
By the end, I was crying, actually more like sobbing. Not because it was heartbreaking, but because I felt so seen.
So please don’t write this off as “just another rom-com.” Give it the chance to surprise you. Sometimes the stories packaged as cute little rom-coms end up asking the biggest questions about who we are, how we love, and how we see ourselves.

This was a a quick and easy, cozy, low-stakes romance that would make a great summer/hurricane-season read.
What I liked:
I liked representation:
- I can see many readers resonating Cai, FMC, struggles and insecurities.
- I enjoyed how the author incorporated her Cuban roots throughout the story. It felt heartfelt and authentic.
- I loved Cai's family. While they weren't perfect, they were supportive, loving, and brought a lot of warmth to the story.
- As a South Florida native, I especially appreciated the hurricane setting, it felt very familiar and nostalgic.
- I liked Cai's quirky personality
- Sonny, MMC, was highlight for me I found him genuine and caring.
My only critique is that I wanted more from Sonny and Cai's romance. I personally wanted a slower build to Cai and Sonny's relationship, to give more substance to their connection/chemistry. I also would have loved to learn more about Sonny's family and see a bit more closure to that part of his story.
Overall, while the romance wasn't quite the right fit for my reading tastes, I still appreciated the heart that went into this story. If you enjoy sweet, cozy romances with strong family dynamics, and cultural representation, I think this one is worth checking out.

A Curvy Girl’s Hurricane Survival Guide felt like a warm, deeply validating love note to every girl who grew up doubting her worth, hiding her body, or feeling like she was "too much." Giuliana Locay hit so close to home with this one, grounding the romance in rich culture, vibrant settings, and real emotional weight.
Setting the story mostly in Miami made the backdrop feel so alive, but it was the portrayals of her Cuban family that truly made it shine. The warmth, the noise, the chaos—it felt completely authentic.
Cai’s struggle with her body image hit incredibly hard for me. The way she constantly picks herself apart and struggles to view herself in a positive light was so painfully accurate. Beyond that, the dynamic of having a family that continuously feels the need to comment on bad eating habits and weight is a subtle kind of hurt that many of us know all too well. Connecting with Cai on that personal level made her journey feel so raw and real.
Enter Sonny. I absolutely adored his natural easiness and the effortless way he slotted into Cai’s family dynamics. But what really stole the show was his gentleness and the magnetic, gravitational pull he had toward Cai. He fell hard, wore his heart completely on his sleeve, and truly worshipped her by the end. This was my first ARC ever after meeting the author at a local bookstore, and, wow, it was JUST the book I needed right now. I got the ARC this morning and read on and off throughout every down moment of my busy Sunday.
Cai is so relatable as she battles her own inner “gremlin” plus preconceived notions about what others are thinking about her (even if they aren’t- the anxiety is real, man). I loved her family and her learning to grow with them after a couple heart to hearts.
And Sonny? Sonny is amazing. Self conscious in a different way, making sure he guards his heart while trying to be open and let love in. He was so sweet and kind- absolutely loved him and even more so, loved him and Cai together.
The story itself was so sweet. The Cuban family in Miami in the middle of hurricane season and an active hurricane with this Arizona man thrown in the middle and having the time of his life with it? Loved it. Definitely recommend this adorable rom-com!

From the very first page, Giuliana Locay crafts a story that feels deeply personal, authentic, and full of heart. At its center is Cai, a plus-size Cuban Latina navigating the impossible expectations placed on her by family, culture, and society while trying to learn that her worth has never been defined by the number on a scale.
What I loved most was how real Cai felt.
She isn’t written as a stereotype or simply “the curvy girl.” She’s funny, vulnerable, stubborn, compassionate, and wonderfully flawed. Watching her slowly grow into herself, learning to set boundaries, embrace who she is, and redefine what happiness looks like, made her journey incredibly rewarding.
And then there’s her family.
Locay absolutely nails the warmth, chaos, and unmistakable authenticity of a big, loud Cuban family. Every gathering felt alive with humor, love, opinions, food, and tradition. As someone who loves stories centered around family dynamics, this was easily one of my favorite aspects of the novel. The cultural representation never felt performative, it felt lived in, genuine, and full of pride.
The romance was equally wonderful.
I found myself rooting for Cai and Sonny every step of the way. Their relationship unfolds with tenderness, patience, and emotional honesty, making every setback hurt and every victory feel earned. I cried with Cai, wanted to shake some sense into her at times, and by the end, I was crying happy tears for them both.
This book effortlessly balances heartbreak, humor, romance, and self-discovery. It’s a reminder that healing isn’t linear, self-love takes work, and the people who truly love us will see our worth long before we do ourselves.

I had the privilege of reading this book as an ARC reader and I’m very grateful to the author. It was a refreshing easy to read rom-com with an unsuspecting meet cute moment. That pulls at the heartstrings as it delves into family relationships, the messy and loud ones and the distant ones too. I enjoyed my girl Cai’s growth into believing in herself and loving her self enough to allow someone step in and love her as she is. No conditions, no making her self small for love. She was able to realize she doesn’t have to do all the chasing to be loved and accepted. Sonny was a gem and if there are more of him in real life, whoa! That journey Cai went through with her self was very relatable, and I enjoyed their happy ending!

Okay so this book was cute. The story is a dual POV that follows Cai and Sonny who gets grounded in Miami for a hurricane and they both end up staying with Cai’s family for the duration of the hurricane. Cai is chasing a stupid boy named Trevor. (Tbh, Trevor is the most perfect name for him.) and Sonny who is also on the same flight gets grounded with no where to go because everything is booked out for the hurricane and he saved her life because she was choking. It’s this whole thing. Anyways.
Right off the jump, Sonny gets put in coach when he bought a first class seat. Idk who buys a first class seat for domestic travel, but regardless, he gets downgraded to coach. In reality that would never happen and it is never followed up on. I guess Sonny doesn’t care because he’s a gazillionaire or thinks Cai is hot or whatever. (But he does charter a plane for the flight back) He gets sat next to Cai.
The book makes it a point to say that Sonny is attracted immediately to Cai and that’s she’s plus sized. But for real it says it over and over and over and over. Like we get it she’s overweight. I LOVED the illustrations though. It added a little extra compliment to the visuals. Nice touch.
I love the grandma, she was so cool and witty.
Another thing, Cai is 29 years old. Her room at home didn’t change at all? Since she was a teen? Literally the minute I moved out of my parent’s house, they changed my room into a game room. I don’t think that Cai’s mum would keep Cais room that way. Her personality is too rigid and practical for that.
So Sonny and Cai are at Cais parents house in Miami and everyone is prepping for this big storm. And all the kids know that Sonny is like a video game CEO or something and now they are all in a lie together. Meanwhile, the adults see Sonny crushing on Cai.
(Side note: the author uses the word “floozy”. I like that word, it’s silly.)
Sonny sticks up for Cai a whole bunch, which is wild for a person to do for a brand new human they met like that morning, and maybe I just don’t understand why Cai’s family is complaining to essentially a complete stranger about Cai’s issues, but maybe I don’t have to understand.
(Another side note: I know people who worked on the Sharknado movie in set design 😂 he used to have a bronco that he kept in Koreatown and it would get broken into an embarrassing number of times. It got so bad he used to just leave the windows down so they would stop breaking his windows)
Anyways, there is significant character development in this book. Cai finds herself and after this whole mess of her changing who she is for a man, it was good to see growth. I would honestly give this book 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because if the character development and it was a super quick read (like read in 3 hours quick) and I like that. It was also maybe two chili peppers for spice. 🌶️🌶️
The scenes were very well written though and I hope that if this author writes more in the future, she really hones in on the skill she has for writing intimate scenes. Very well done.

Does it have to be? Also no.
It’s fun! And fresh! Just a micro journey of self confidence. And you can read the whole thing during a mani/pedi <- which is what I did.

At first, I was frustrated with some of her decisions, but the more I got to know her, the more I wanted to reach through the pages and be her friend. Watching her slowly find her confidence and begin to see her own worth—especially during the closet scene—had me smiling from ear to ear. Her growth felt genuine, and it was impossible not to cheer her on.
And then there’s Sonny. He was the kind of love interest that quietly won me over. Patient, kind, and supportive, he remained a true gentleman throughout the story. Even during the moments when I wanted him to push a little harder, I understood that he was navigating Cai’s fears just as much as she was. Their relationship was filled with tenderness, respect, and the kind of chemistry that makes you root for them every step of the way.

As a girl who identifies as a curvy girl and has lived in the path of hurricanes her whole life, how could I NOT pick this one up!! There really is no comparison to when you can identify with a story, character, family so wholly. Representation does matter!
Immediately we are introduced to Cayetana (Cai) who is on a plane to chase after a boyfriend that texted her that he was staying in PR indefinitely and then proceeded to BLOCK her?!?! NO! You know who she is - a woman who for whatever reason has felt less than her whole life. Easy to do when coming from a big Latine family full of comparisons and whose love language is teasing you or being TOO honest. Not the best environment for more sensitive people.

Talk about close proximity!! I couldn’t imagine a more perfect scenario to really get to know someone. That's exactly what they did. It was so nice to see their relationship blossom through conversations and little moments of understanding between them. It was easy to see how their dynamic was so smooth and it was easy for cai to be herself - I mean even her family noticed the second they walked in the door.
What I loved the most: seeing how loving and involved Latine families are - they immediately take you in like one of their own and I love seeing that, the moments that Sonny had with her siblings, abuela, and her dad(!!!), walking in the middle of a hurricane (that’s so Florida - guilty), the fact the Cai found her voice and used to repair the important relationships in her life, and that Buffy reference!!
I wish we had more scenes with the tension between Sonny and Cai coming from both sides. A lot of it was from Sonny since Cai was going back and forth on her current mans. I truly enjoyed this read - I just love seeing my Latine culture represented so well!
As a girl who identifies as a curvy girl and has lived in the path of hurricanes her whole life, how could I NOT pick this one up!! There really is no comparison to when you can identify with a story, character, family so wholly. Representation does matter!
Immediately we are introduced to Cayetana (Cai) who is on a plane to chase after a boyfriend that texted her that he was staying in PR indefinitely and then proceeded to BLOCK her?!?! NO! You know who she is - a woman who for whatever reason has felt less than her whole life. Easy to do when coming from a big Latine family full of comparisons and whose love language is teasing you or being TOO honest. Not the best environment for more sensitive people.

Cai's journey felt so relatable. What unfolds is a romance full of heart, humor, and healing.
One of my favorite parts was how authentically Giuliana Locay captured Latine family dynamics. As a Latine reader, I saw so much of myself in Cai and in the loud, loving, sometimes overwhelming family relationships that are so familiar to many of us. The food, the teasing, the unconditional support, and even the generational wounds all felt genuine. It never felt like a stereotype. It felt like home.

What a beautiful story, I was hooked from the dedication and it lived up to the expectation it gave. I finished this in one sitting I just couldn’t put it down.
I loved that when you were in Sonny’s POV it wasn’t translated when Cais family speak Spanish that you were just in the same boat as him trying to figure out what’s going on. The whole vibe of this book is so cute.

This book had me laughing so many times, it was truly like watching a rom-com in my head. This is such a nice easy read and I just loved the whole family dynamic and it was nice learning a bit of Spanish along with some of the culture.

(ARC reader) This book has so much heart! Locay takes you on an emotional rollercoaster with her FMC, Cai, who is doing her best to fight for love, while also realizing she needs to love and accept herself. Set amid the backdrop of a hurricane and forced to shelter with Cai's loud, intrusive, but oh so loving Cuban family, the chemistry between Sonny and Cai is as electric as the roiling hurricane outside. If you happen to be Cuban American, so much of this book will tug at your heart: from the quasi inappropriate family nicknames, to the over sharing, to the family judgment and overeating... And especially the symbolism of the cocuyos. Something about Cai's internal struggle and ultimate embracing of herself healed a piece of me. This story will do that to you: heal you and make you believe in love again.

From the little art pieces to the way you can smell the meals, you truly feel like you are living in this book. The cute chapter titles make diving in so much fun and really shows just how much love the author has put into this story! Everyone loves a good love story, but this was so much more. A story about family, love lost and love found, but most importantly, self love. This was an insanely quick read, it only took me about 3 hours, so it’s really more of a novella.
Things moved *very* quickly, and I just wish it was longer so we had more time to sit in those feelings rather than going 0-100 so fast. As someone who is plus-size herself, I related a bit to the FMC’s internal thoughts. Also, just the setting being in South Florida during a hurricane was also very relatable to me. Overall, it was a cute story. I would recommend this as a quick and fun summer beach read. I could totally see someone spending a few hours in the sand reading this book start to finish.

This was a mixed read for me. There were some really sweet moments that had me rooting for the characters, especially in the second half, and I loved how everything wrapped up in the end.
That said, one of the main characters frustrated me at times. There was one scene in particular that I had to reread because I couldn't quite understand how they jumped to that conclusion.
I also wasn't completely sold on the illustrations. While they were a nice idea, some felt a bit random and didn't seem to match the scenes they accompanied.
Overall, this was a solid 3-star read. If you love romance, yearning, and a satisfying ending, I'd still recommend giving it a go!

This was like an antidepressant in book form, I absolutely loved it!
The characters were incredibly engaging, the chemistry between the FMC/MMC was palpable, and I could not get enough of Cai's family. Absolutely LOVED this book! The "man falls first" ❤️trope was executed so perfectly, and I couldn't get enough of the dual POV—it made watching their connection grow so much better. All the movie and TV show references were such a fun touch and really highlighted how compatible they were and showed my age.😂
Also, Abuela stole the show with "butt bigger, nicer, yes?" 🤣 I died laughing!

Hands down the cutest rom-com I've read in a very long time. I couldn't stop reading this. Giuliana Locay is a wonderfully talented author. I felt so immersed in this novel. I could feel what Cai felt. I resonated so much with her insecurities. I spent the entire time on a rollercoaster of emotions. Laughing at times, crying with the characters, cheering them on. I highly recommend this book. It's a 5-star read that deserves even more than that!!!!

Very fast and fun read! Cai and Sonny are so relatable and their romance keeps you entertained the entire read. It was refreshing to read a book from an indie author and to read a story loosely based on her own love story. It was heartwarming and made you feel like you knew the characters like they were your own friends experiencing their story right in front of you. Highly recommend this read!
