After surviving a near deadly attack by a group of anarchists called the Onyxites, eighteen-year-old Petra Fields develops telekinetic abilities that categorize her as a Black Star—superpowered individuals meant to protect humanity. To keep her family safe, she must learn to control these powers, along with other abilities that soon begin to emerge. As war with the Onyxites looms, Petra and several other Black Stars must prepare—ready or not—in this dystopian thriller.
I really enjoyed this book. I had previously read the original version, and this edition was just as good as the last. There was plenty of action and adventure, and I could easily visualize the scenes as the story unfolded.
This was a quick read for me, and I really enjoyed the chapters and the overall flow of the story. I would have loved to see a little more world-building, but overall, this was a solid read.
As a huge romantasy fan, I did miss having more romance in this installment. However, I got the feeling that there may be more of that explored as the series continues, which I'm definitely looking forward to.
I'm excited to see what's next for Petra and her friends and looking forward to future adventures. Kudos to the author!
I'd say more of a 4.25 ⭐ but ratings don't allow that. It's a good book. ARC read this book a month ago and have been waiting to put up my review 😊 I'm not one to give away spoilers. So don't read this hoping for those. You're getting a quick summary of my opinion and that is all. Petra is a decent character. She could use a little more depth as a woman. Her story feels like a boy going through puberty more or less than a girl. I don't hate it. It made her a little detached from me tho as a female reader. The formatting is lil odd to me, but not all books are the same. It is formatted appropriately. The entire book reads fast. One minute you're at Petra's house, the next her school, and then on to the city of superheroes (why can't I remember the name rn). There's action after action, intense moment after intense moment, it rarely lets you breathe for a second to attach to the characters. I love that but I also love intimate moments with the characters. The intimacy is there but very short in between. The love story isn't as strong as I hoped. It's ok tho. The author described it to me as a Marvel meets Divergent type book and I will say YES it is all of that. So if you want all that action, then THIS BOOK is 100% for you. If you want more intimacy, then just stop and re-read the more intimate parts before moving on.
It felt like it was written in rambles; not in length but just sentence structure, which made for a tedious main character to read from the POV of. The story itself is competent and clearly thought out. Romantic subplot was a bit rushed but also, there was plenty of action so maybe that was for the intended audience, I can see that being intentional. 2 stars is not a bad rating, it’s just one of those “not quite my cup of tea, but it’s almost there” so I do hope to read book 2!
