Follows the career of medieval knight William Marshal from his rigorous training to his tournaments and Crusade battles, and provides information on weaponry, castle life, and the political and religious background of his era.
I read this book as our family was watching the BBC series "Merlin". Very nice compliment to learning more about knighthood, chivalry, and in particular about William Marshall. I do believe I will begin looking for more about the dashing figure he cut in the book. I will save it for my son to read as I'm sure he will enjoy it as well (especially as a compliment to some of his studies at some point).
I picked this book up because my GR friend Elizabeth expressed an interest in William Marshal, whom I'd never heard of. Now, after reading this picture book, I must read more! William Marshal was the epitome of all the best in knighthood, a fascinating man. This book was a good introduction to his life and times.
This book was a great addition to our history chapter on English knights. I never knew about William Marshal--now I'd like to read more. My children were unfortunately fascinated w/ the painting depicting the burning at the stake of the Knights Templar's leaders. Oh well, they don't watch much T.V.--I guess they have to get their violence somewhere....
We read this story during Knights of the Periodic Table school year, then found out that the knight in this book, William Marshall, is my 23rd great grandfather.
