Review of Finding Home by Eliza Lentzski, Audiobook narrated by Angela Dawe

Slowly but surely, the Winter Jacket series is being released on audio, luckily all (so far) narrated by the fantastic Angela Dawe. Just her rendition of Hunter's voice makes this series worth listening to.

Elle and Hunter have been together for a while now. Their relationship held on despite pressure from family and professional life. But when Elle gets a tempting job offer that forces her to move to LA, will her relationship with Hunter survive the long-distance?

This is book 3 of the Winter Jacket series which is formed by Hunter (book 0), Winter Jacket (book 1), New Beginnings (book 2), Finding Home (book 3), and All In (book 4). I keep on repeating myself but it's worth mentioning it here again: it's really hard to maintain the same level of interest throughout a romance series once the main couple is established and still very much in love. But somehow Ms. Lentzski pulls it off, every single book.

The source of tension in this installment is the long-distance relationship. Sometimes these types of stories are hard to write because, by definition, the main leads are physically separated from each other and the romance suffers. Even though the mains stay away for a good while, the author makes this distance work to propel the plot forward. I'm going to summarise it in a short sentence: the longing is heartbreaking. At times, this book breaks your heart into pieces and you just have to trust that the author is going to put it all back again. Eventually. In a painstakingly slow manner.

These books are all about the characters' journeys and for most of this series, Elle has more trials and tribulations than Hunter. It's understandable as the series (except for Book 0) is written from Elle's point of view. Hunter is usually this almost perfect angel with unending patience and an extraordinary ability to put up with Elle's immaturity despite she's 21 and Elle more than a decade her senior. But in Finding Home, Hunter's ideal image begins to crumble and she starts to act her own age. I'm glad that the author decided to make Hunter flawed, contradictory, and second-guessing her decisions. Her flaws make her even more perfect, if that makes sense, and enrich the story.

Angela Dawe did another extraordinary job with this audiobook and took this already excellent book to another level. Her performance of the feelings is so raw, so heartbreaking, so convincing that it's inevitable not to feel the same. As I said at the beginning, her rendition of Hunter is fantastic. I started listening for that but stayed for the rest. Absolutely worth it. Can't wait for the final book. 5 stars.

I am fully immersed in the world of Elle and Hunter and Angela. C'mon Ms. Dawe, you must know most of us are over the moon for this series because of your stellar vocal chord abilities. I feel like we're friends by now.

This one was slightly less enjoyable than the other two in the series, where we find Elle taking a stab at Hollywood TV writing while Hunter stays in Minnesota. The story is a little slow, a lot of longing and missing and phone/video calls and moping. The Hollywood part was actually quite dry, and never before can I say that I was very much rooting for all things Minnesota, haha. I was so sure Elle was going to mess up royally in this one, and she does find herself in a helluva lot of compromising positions. There were some head shaking moments for me that I was like "hey now, that's a little rash, isn't that fast? what the......" but you ain't getting any spoilers from this girl.

But I suspend rationality because I good goddamned love how this author weaves such intensity in her main couples. Like I said, I am INVESTED. Book 4 you say?! On it, peeps.

Very well written! Absolutely loved it ❤️ Sweet, angsty and hot! I still am very fond of Hunter and she can do no wrong in my eyes. So, she asked for the break..so what? I get it. She wants to cut her losses now rather than wait further down the road. Just pull the damn band-aid. Feel the pain now… yes, I get it and maybe I’ll do the same thing if in similar position. No?

Anyway…like I said I loved it and just had to finish it in one sitting 4.5 ⭐️

Listened to the narration again as I can’t get enough of Angela Dawe’s version of Elle and Hunter. I don’t think there’s a book I’ve rated less than 4 stars from Lentzski because she’s THAT good. I really connect with her story telling and her series work in particular (both this one and Don’t Call Me Hero). Can’t wait for the fourth audiobook to drop!

Two and a half stars, rounded up. Not as good as the first two books in the series -- first part of the book is rather boring; I didn't like Troian at all; Hunter is less mature than two years ago. I liked Jessica the most. Hopefully the next book will bring back the quality of the first two.

In the first two books of this series (and I didn't realize until I saw in another review that there is a Hunter short story prequel that I need to find) I fell in love with Hunter. She's the younger of the two in this age gap romance series, though the most emotionally mature in spite of the fact that Elle is a decade older. I didn't really like Elle in the first installment, but she evolved quite a bit in Book 2 - New Beginnings - and grew on me.
I find the character arcs interesting for both of these MCs, though the primary focus was on Elle in this one as she takes a sabbatical from teaching to move to LA to try her hand at writing screenplays. Her best friend Troian is hired to be the showrunner for a new TV series and she recruits Elle to relocate from Minnesota to California to be a part of her writing team. It may or may not be permanent and Elle likes the challenge this provides after being in her comfort zone as a tenured English professor.
The great challenge is that Elle made the decision to do this without really giving a lot of thought to Hunter and how this would affect their relationship. At this point Hunter has graduated and has begun working as a nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit. She's really just establishing herself and doesn't have the kind of flexibility to travel and visit Elle as she would like. They're in year two of their relationship and things had really just started to flow well between them now that the controversy of their early beginnings are behind them. In this installment the focus is on how Elle's decision affected them as a couple and as individuals.
I think it was wise of me to experience these on audio. There are some grammatical issues that are glossed over because of the brilliance of narrator Angela Dawe. While I felt there was a bit too much focus on sex in the middle of all this angst, the performance of them was spectacular, not gonna lie. There were times, though, that I just wanted to say, "Elle - you really don't think you can just hold her for comfort without needing more?" And Troian was really annoying. She's supposed to be Elle's best friend but is another one who really lacks maturity at times.  While Hunter showed her age a bit more in this one (cut her some slack - she's 22) Elle wasn't perfect either. I'll give her credit, though. She has certainly evolved from the days of Book 1. I was pleasantly surprised by many of her choices.
I need to listen to Book 4 - All In - very soon while all of this is fresh in my mind. I'll admit - if Angela Dawe wasn't narrating these I wouldn't like them quite as much as I do. But she takes a good book and turns it into something a whole lot better. I'm all in for a happy ending for these two characters!

The level of hurt and uncertainty was top notch. So far, book 3 is my favourite of the 3 books I’ve read so far. There’s still 2 more in the series so….

Took me a while to finish because real life got in the way, but I really like this series. I alternated between listening to the audiobook(Angela Dawe is so good!!) and the ebook.
So yea I saw the breakup coming and i did feel like they both acted irrationally but I think the reason why I like Hunter and Elle is that eventually, they do end up clearing things up. Yea their communication is screwed up but they eventually do address all their issues and I just think that's really nice. It really is refreshing to see characters talk things out rationally.

And now the second part, JESSICA. I was fully prepared to hate her character lol, but loved the way how she slowly became friends with Elle. A part of me wants an happy ending for her too.

This series has genuinely surprised me so far, yea its a few cliches but it's so well done and its slowly becoming my favourite series!

I absolutely loved Winter Jacket: finding Home, the latest book in the Winter Jacket series. Even by the standards of the series, this is a pretty angsty book. It wasn't always easy to read and there were definitely times I want to beat each character with the clue stick. It's definitely worth the trip though. Sometimes, in a series, things can seem a little stale, but the conflicts, primarily emotional and self-inflicted, seem very much in keeping with each character's nature and it feels like an authentic and legitimate continuation of their story. I'm pretty sure there's going to be at least one more book as hints are dropped for future angsty times between Hunter and Elle. In addition to the main couple, Lentzski also brings in a lot of new secondary characters and fleshes out a few others. Maybe we'll get to read some of their stories too?

I really liked the first 2 books in the series, but this one, or at least its first 70% was a little bit too slow for my taste, but the last 30% made up for it. However I ended up not really liking Troian, I don't think she acted as a proper best friend for Elle. On the other hand I really liked 2 minor characters, Sonja and Jessica, but mostly Jessica.

Although not as enjoyable as the earlier books in the series, I liked the read enough to look forward to the next book. My issues have to do with how the relationship changed. I understand age is a factor and the need to do what you feel you have to do with the opportunities presented in your life but it seemed forced and not congruent with the previous behaviors of Elles and Hunter. One pleasant occurrence was Jessica. Cool and smooth Jessica.

Apparently I really needed to get this out of my system. A longer commute and a wait at the hairdresser's certainly helped.

Again, more believable conflicts and just something about those characters.

Mistakes once more just on this side of tolerable.

I would definitely read another one, especially if it had more Jessica. I wouldn't really mind if she replaced Troian.

I also didn't mind the 1st person narrative, although sometimes I would have liked Hunter's perspective.

As always, another amazing book from Eliza Lentzski. Hunter and Elle are one of my favorite couples. I was surprised by the direction this book took, but I was still up all night reading it. I am holding out for a fourth in the series.

Sept 2017 - After re-reading this I kind of ask "What the hell happened to Hunter?" I mean between Elle and Hunter, face it Hunter is the mature one. But in this book, she kind of stepped back 5 times. It's like they've swapped personalities. Well, I get it she needs to discover herself but then again she's acting like Elle.
Nonetheless, I still like this one. Because frankly, lately I haven't really enjoyed reading. I miss reacting to frustrating characters. I hate them but I also like reading them.
I was torn on downgrading my rating but again.. I really do appreciate this book because I did miss the frustrating couple. So, I'll keep the 4stars.

What a awesome sequel!

Oh yeah, this was definitely the best of the 3 parts. Not that the other 2 were worse, quite the contrary. I like all 3 but the latter had everything in it what I expected of a romance. Everything happened and kept me on the edge of my seat. I am very glad that I got to know this author and I will definitely want to read much more from her.

Plot: This starts with Elle temporarily moving to California to try out screen writing with her best friend. As she is packing up and road tripping to get there her relationship with Hunter begins to show signs of stress.

Elle feels a bit out of place working and hanging out with stereotypical Hollywood party people but she is doing well at her job. Hunter eventually comes to visit and is clearly unhappy with the current state of their relationship. Shortly after returning home Hunter dumps Elle. Elle is unsure about what to do and considers sleeping with a few different people until she realizes that she only wants Hunter.

Hunter sleeps with Elle at Troian’s wedding but still doesn’t want to continue dating her while she is in California. Elle later realizes that she cares more about Hunter than she cares about her career. She decides to finish her time as a screen writer and return home to win Hunter back. After returning home the dean shows up at Elle’s door and makes a pass but Elle rebuffs her. After a brief interaction Elle seeks out Hunter in an attempt to resume their relationship.

Hunter happily sleeps with Elle but insists that she doesn’t want to be in a committed relationship quite yet. Elle is hurt and is soon after propositioned by the dean of her school again. Elle still doesn’t want anyone but Hunter but does start a friendship with the dean. Hunter runs into Elle and Jessica, the dean, a couple times and gets jealous.

Hunter agrees to see Elle a few times and they eventually get back together once Hunter sees that Elle wrote their romance into every episode while she was away in California. Hunter admits that she is insecure that Elle is talented enough to leave and start a new successful career. She fears that Elle will leave again but Elle reassured her that she values their relationship above her career.

Characterization: Elle is confused during this book. She tries out a bunch of new circumstances in order to find what makes her happy.

Hunter is a bit out of character in this book. She is usually overly mature but in this book she lets her insecurities make her act childishly.

Writing: This was written in first person perspective from Elle’s POV. This was well written but I was never overly invested in Elle’s screen writing career so that part of the plot dragged a little bit for me.

"After months of trying to figure out who I should be and where I belonged, I was finally home."

I loved loved loved! It was great to follow another chapter in Ellie and Hunter's story!

It was a long way, but Ellie and Hunter meet again, I couldn't be happier, the ending was beautiful.

I liked Jessica. And I laugh a lot with Troian and Nikk, as always.

I can't wait to read book 4.

I recommend reading! But, remember to read book 1 and 2, so as not to get lost in the story. Worth it!

Best of Winter Jacket series

I absolutely love Winter Jacket: Finding Home, book 3 of Winter Jacket series by Eliza Lentzski. By far I think it is the best among the series. (I’ve read book 0, 1, 2 & 3) Although there are lots of angst through out the book, the ending is satisfying. This is the book full of heart-wrenching moments that kept me staying up to read it to the end. After this book, there’s no doubt I have become a fan reader of Lentzski!

I loved how much these two grew. Individually and as a couple.

How much Elle changed and isn't running from commitment. But it was especially lovely to see Hunter acting quite immature. As much as a 20 something can be grown up, adult, they still have a bit of dumb youth inside them, can't be helped and I think, even though it was painfully nice to see, I loved this bit the most. Not a single bad side character, even the Dean was a nice addition. Can't wait for the final chapter.

I was nervous to read this, knowing there would be struggles between our two lovelies and the temptations they’d face. It was necessary to endure this book before the happier final book 4 in the series. Well, I both loved this but also wanted to slap the author silly for some actions that I didn’t agree with! I’m not going to spoil anything because I survived this with the help of being charmed by Angela Dawe’s comforting voice.

3.5 stars: not sure how i feel about hunter after reading the book and her basically using elle for sex 😭. i think this is the perfect book that shows how elle has really evolved though. i wish we got to see more of elle being back in minnesota and trying to get hunter back/making her jealous. the california scenes got a bit repetitive but i could feel how unhappy elle felt so that’s probably a great job writing on the author’s part

A wonderful, loving series …

Elle and Hunter’s journey continues with self imposed obstacles and fears. Elle’s Dean of Faculty turns out to be an interesting diversion that results in a new found friendship. Again, the secondary characters are well developed as is the plot of this installation of this series. A very good read. On to book 4! Thank you Peace

Final thoughts: sometimes I want to fight Troian and I think dean merlot needs a spin off!! 👏🏼 on to the next one….
