4.5 stars. I devoured this one. The switch between past and present flowed easily and showed how Quinn and Liv got there. It was predictable but well written, balancing angst, emotion, and sweetness. I loved getting to know Liv and Quinn from the past, even if their decisions were frustrating sometimes. I totally understand that it came from the weight of youth, grief, and false expectations. Comparing them with their present selves was satisfying, and I felt proud and happy for them. Seeing Liv going after what she wants, while respecting Quinn's boundaries was perfectly balanced. I just wished to see them more basking in their new happiness and building a new love story on solid ground, especially the scenes mentioned in the epilogue that happened off-screen. I really liked the secondary characters: Emma, Mel, and Audrey. I understand this book is part of a series and truly hope to read Emma’s story, whom I adored. Peters made a wonderful debut with a well executed second chance romance.

As soon as I saw the ARC available for this book, it jumped to the top of my TBR. It promised some of my favorite tropes: second chance romance and angst with a happy ending and it didn’t disappoint at all. The author kept the angst going literally until the last chapter and I loved every second of it. The dual timeline never felt confusing and it provided a lot of information on why they were acting as they were currently.
I adored Quinn and Liv, I wanted them to work out so much. It was lovely to see how much they had grown and matured and how their lives had changed since they had been together. The side characters were all incredible in their own right, I’m really looking forward to, hopefully, reading their stories.
This debut was truly wonderful work and I hope to read many more stories by Elle Peters in the future.

I adored Quinn and Liv, I wanted them to work out so much. It was lovely to see how much they had grown and matured and how their lives had changed since they had been together. Don't judge this book by the cover or blurb
This is genuinely a wonderful book, and so much better than the cover or description would imply. I passed over this book, actually, when looking through new releases. It wasn't until I saw a recommendation that I gave it a second chance, and I'm so glad I did! I'm very much looking forwards to the second installment (fingers crossed for Emma and Mel!)

This. Book. Is. So. Good. My goodness, this was an exceptional debut by Elle Peters & I cannot wait for future works by her! What We Got Wrong is an exceptionally written sapphic second chance romance full of heart, real life messiness and true love. I found this book to be overwhelmingly enjoyable. I found myself glued to each page and racing to find out what happens next while at the same time begging myself to read slower so that I could hold on to this special love story a little longer.
Quinn Miles is everything for me in this story! She is kind, sweet, generous, giving, selfless and just so beautiful inside and out. She is introduced at 31 as a sexy butch with a heart of gold and the more I came to know her, the more I grew to love her. She is attending a business conference hosted by the company owned by her college roommate, best friend, friends with benefits and love of her life, Olivia Palmer. They are thrust back into each other's orbit after not seeing or speaking to each other for the last decade, since they graduated college. Watching them re-enter each other's lives was quite special and I could see how much they still cared for each other and were still haunted by the mistakes of their past.
I love second chance romances but they must be told in such a way that I can truly grasp the past and present. Elle Peters does an incredible job of weaving together past and present by dedicating every other chapter as such. I was so incredibly impressed by this and found that I enjoyed the college years a great deal. I came to know Quinn and Liv on a deeper level and watch as they bond and connect as friends and then as lovers. Their chemistry was electric and their attraction to each other was raw and real. I loved the toaster oven element as Liv had never been with or attracted to a woman before but fell hard for Quinn. Honestly, they fell hard for each other but the timing was all wrong… Liv had lost her sister a few years back and she and her family were still grieving and not really coping well. She forced herself into a box and wouldn't allow for the possibility of a real love or a real life with Quinn despite how much she obviously loved her. Quinn, deeply in love, was just happy to have Liv in any way and just accepted a friends with benefits arrangement that really didn't benefit anyone. Of course, it was beautiful, messy, painful and ended badly. I loved how realistic the story was and can totally understand the mindset of both Quinn and Liv. Following their college journey and eventual implosion was so emotional for me and I became so attached to the both of them. I found myself purposefully re reading sections just because i found them to be so mooving…and wanted to make the book last longer.
The writing was really fantastic. It is emotional, funny, sweet, deep, messy and just so easy and fun to read. The words sung to me and crawled under my skin. I cannot believe that this is a debut for Elle Peters because she writes like a best selling author already. The characters were written with depth and as such well rounded and loveable people with real life problems to overcome. I found myself quite enamored with both Liv and Quinn and sort of fell in love right along with them. The dual POV truly allowed for me to get to know and understand both women and helped me connect to them on a deeper level. I was blown away by the creativity of Elle Peters in learning of Quinn and Liv’s past and how they came to be where they are now. It made all the difference because understanding their past and what really happened made me root for them and made their second chance so incredibly satisfying for me. When they finally shed their fears and chose each other, I was a bit teary eyed and so damn happy for them. They so deserved their happy ending and I just wish the book was longer and I could have watched them revel in their new relationship and present day bliss a little longer. Their dialogue was real and so well done. I loved the touches of humor and found their conversations to be natural and real. The intimate scenes were done to perfection. There was so much passion, connection and heat that I just felt that much more invested in Quinn and Liv’s love story. Really beautifully done!
Okay, there is so much to love about this book that I feel like I could go on and on! But the bottom line is this book is truly fantastic! The writing is soulful and the characters are just wonderful. This is one of the best sapphic romances I have ever read and I cannot wait to re-read it so that I can spend time with Quinn and Liv again. I immediately joined the author's newsletter for a little bonus chapter of this book and was thrilled to have a bit more of Liv and Quinn to hold on to. I cannot wait for the next book by Elle Peters and just hope I can get my hands on the next ARC! I cannot recommend this book enough! If you are looking for an emotional, warm, sweet and all around great second chance sapphic love story, look no further and start reading What We Got Wrong.

The story is told across two timelines, which isn’t usually my favorite style, but it works very well here. It begins in the present day when two former college friends, Quinn and Liv, reunite at a conference. At the same time, we learn how the two met in college ten years ago, became roommates, then friends, and then so much more—much more than either of them was willing to admit. “It’s just casual,” was their mantra.
Liv and Quinn come from two different worlds: Liv is from the upper class, with plenty of money but a grieving family that can’t get over a loss, where expectations are high and life is already mapped out. Liv, away from home for the first time, is trying to chart her own course while also coming to terms with her grief. Over the course of ten years, Liv undergoes a major transformation, both personally and professionally. But despite all the self-confidence she has at work, when it comes to her feelings for Quinn, things are still different—even today.
Quinn, on the other hand, comes from a family with an average income—but one that’s all the more loving, chaotic, and loud, with four siblings. She is one of the most lovable, helpful, and loyal people you can imagine. You just have to love her. The two quickly become friends, and Quinn’s family welcomes Liv into their circle as a matter of course—and Liv learns what it means to have a warm and loving family. To this day, Quinn’s family remains one of her most important sources of support.
I really enjoyed both storylines; Emma Peters has a fluid writing style and the pacing is good. Even though the story was somewhat predictable, it was very entertaining and written with many nuances. Little by little, we learn what happened during their college years and, in parallel, how they met again during that week at the conference and tried to reconnect. They slipped back into old habits a bit too quickly, but her friends and cousin try to get them back on the right track.
The ending wrapped up a bit too quickly; I would have liked to spend a little more time with the two of them after they’d finally gotten things right.
But I’m assuming we’ll learn more about them in the next book. And hopefully, we’ll also get the stories of Emma, Mel, or Audrey—the three most important supporting characters.

OH MY GOD THEY WERE ROOMMATES

After being in a reading slump since around March, the cover and description of this book caught my eye. This was honestly such a good read to break that slump (and what can I say? I'm a real sucker for a swoony butch MC!)
Quinn and Liv are both such likeable characters, both in the past timeline and the present. Liv is so complex, and as her backstory unfolds, you really do start to understand her and why what happened in the past, happened. The dual timelines is so fun, and I love seeing the difference between college age Quinn and Liv, and present day Quinn and Liv. There's so much angst throughout the story, but it's like the MOST delicious kind of angst, and I thoroughly devoured it. I started reading mid-afternoon, and finished around 2AM and I am tired and sleep deprived, but the read was worth it I'm not going to lie.
One thing I loved is that the side characters are so well written that I cared about them as much as I did Quinn and Liv. Emma is so sweet and such a good friend, same with Mel, and Audrey with her lack of filter is quite literally me. I wanted more of the side characters, make this book double in length!! No, but for real, I am very, very excited to see that this is book 1, and I am very hopeful we'll get to see more of Emma, Mel, and Audrey!

Amazing dual timeline and pov!!! In Elle Peters debut novel she absolutely knocked it out the park! This is a best friends to lovers to nothing meet each other again 10 years later situation.
Liv is off to college and away from her family for the first time trying to move through grief and become her own person. Her connection with her new roommate takes off in ways she doesn’t expect it. Liv’s friendship with Quinn has a great start not a slow build up but not insta love. Liv getting a surrogate family from Quinn was a sweet as in. Fast forward 10 years after graduation seeing Liv as a more confident version of herself post family drama breakdown, therapy, and just all around the growing up she did in those 10 years kept her character likable.
Quinn is a total softie she cares for her everyone. She definitely gets her huge heart from her parents. You never need to doubt Quinns loyalty she shows it through actions/words every step of the way. Quinn is all about her family and I love the connection she shares with them. Quinn turning into a hot butch 10 years later who is still just a big softie tracks. She now runs her own business with her best friend Mel and is the god parent to Emma’s little girl. She makes her choices with a good heart but not usually her best interest in mind.
The reconnection 10 years later after they have both had time to come into themselves as adults was perfect. At first it felt like it was moving too quickly, but the flashbacks to college help show the real connection these two have made. I would’ve loved to get more of the adult relationship written into this book towards the end before the epilogue.
The side characters really held their own. Emma was a fantastic friend to both of them. Mel has great comedic timing and inappropriate stories always at the ready. That safety cracks the moment Olivia Palmer walks back into her life through, of all things, a work opportunity. Ten years ago, Liv was Quinn's roommate, her best friend, and the person she could never quite let go of, no matter how much they both insisted what they had was casual. Now Liv is back, polished and successful, looking at Quinn as if no time has passed—and wanting a second chance Quinn isn't sure her heart can survive.
What struck me most was how alive the connection between Quinn and Liv feels on the page. This isn't a romance that rushes the emotional work—the growth of their relationship, the individual development each woman goes through over that decade apart, and the space they allow each other before finally choosing to fight for what they want, are all given real room to breathe. The chemistry works both outside the bedroom and in it; the intimate scenes are written with genuine care rather than just heat. It's a rare thing for a new-to-me author to land a story this well, and I found myself completely pulled in. My one wish is that the balance had tipped slightly less toward the past and given more space to the year after Quinn and Liv finally take their chance—I wanted to sit longer in what they build once they stop running. That's a small thing against everything the book gets right, and it kept this at 4.5 out of 5 stars for me rather than a full five.
If you love second-chance romance with real emotional depth, characters who've actually grown rather than just aged, and a slow-burn reunion that earns its ending, this one is absolutely worth picking up. I voluntarily read and reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

This isn't a romance that rushes the emotional work—the growth of their relationship, the individual development each woman goes through over that decade apart, and the space they allow each other before finally choosing to fight for what they want, are all given real room to breathe. The chemistry works both outside the bedroom and in it; the intimate scenes are written with genuine care rather than just heat. It's a rare thing for a new-to-me author to land a story this well, and I found myself completely pulled in. My one wish is that the balance had tipped slightly less toward the past and given more space to the year after Quinn and Liv finally take their chance—I wanted to sit longer in what they build once they stop running. That's a small thing against everything the book gets right, and it kept this at 4.5 out of 5 stars for me rather than a full five.
If you love second-chance romance with real emotional depth, characters who've actually grown rather than just aged, and a slow-burn reunion that earns its ending, this one is absolutely worth picking up. I voluntarily read and reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

I knew I was in trouble when I reached the end of chapter ten and realised I might be a little bit in love with Quinn. 😅 By chapter twenty, I adored Liv and the sheer amount of love she carried for Quinn… and by chapter thirty? Forget it. Fully obsessed with both of them. ♥️
What We Got Wrong is such a sweet, wholesome and ridiculously adorable love story, but what really hooked me was the way Elle Peters chose to tell it. I LOVE a dual timeline, and combining that with dual POV worked so well here. Watching Quinn and Liv’s past slowly unravel alongside their present kept me constantly questioning what had happened between them.
The dialogue was another huge win for me. It feels natural and authentic, and that made Quinn, Liv and their relationship feel incredibly real. Their chemistry is gorgeous, but it was the obvious depth of love between them that completely got me. Even when I didn’t have all the pieces yet, I could just feel how much these two women meant to each other.
And honestly, they are just SO bloody cute together. By the latter part of the book I had developed a fairly substantial crush on both MCs - and not just because Quinn’s biceps are living rent-free in my brain right now! 😉 Their love story is tender and full of heart, and I absolutely adored watching all those missing pieces finally fall into place.

Let me just start things this way.. I am a reader who goes in as blind as possible. I like a lot of things, but the things I dislike.. man oh man do I seem to dislike them. On paper, What We Got Wrong shouldn't have been a book that worked for me. I am not someone who typically enjoys a dual timeline. So when I first saw it, I was nervous. That being said, I found myself excited to go back to each timeline. I was equally interested in/excited about both aspects of the story. I am not someone who typically enjoys a second chance romance, but everything about Quinn and Olivia just worked. I felt for them both past and present and while I felt such a variety of emotions toward them both, I was absolutely on their team the entire time.
Oh the emotions…I felt such a wide range of emotions as I read.. I laughed..so much, my heart struggled, my heart was comforted, then my heart was hurting more. The spice just fit. It was lighthearted at times, deeply meaningful at others, always incredibly hot.

I absolutely loved What We Got Wrong. The writing pulled me in right away, and every character felt real and fully developed. No one felt one-dimensional or like they existed just to move the story forward. Everyone had their own personality, their own story, and their own depth, which made the entire world of the book feel alive.

Overall Review: This is the third book this year that I have had the experience of wanting it to end immediately so I could see how it ends, while also wishing at the same time that it never ends because of how well-written it is. The character development was top notch. The side characters were all a hoot and I cannot wait to see where they all end up in the future book(s) of the series. I thought I would hate the back-and-forth between present day and years ago in college, but Pete did a great job with this. The spicy scenes were done really well and I looooove consent, safety, and a feeling of protection mingled in with the spice.

I genuinely have zero complaints about this book. I truly loved it! The dual timeline was SO perfect for this story, even if it truly tested every ounce of patience I possess when I want to know what happens lol!! Every time we were in the present I needed to know what was going to happen next, and then we’d jump into the past and I’d get completely sucked into that storyline and need to know how everything went so wrong. I couldn’t read fast enough!! But honestly, that slow unfolding was one of my favorite things about the book. Getting to watch Quinn and Liv fall for each other when they were younger while being completely incapable of recognizing or admitting what they were actually feeling, made knowing that it eventually fell apart hurt that much more. They were young and messy and made mistakes, and I felt for both of them SO much. But then getting to see them find each other again ten years later?? My heart. Second chance romance can sometimes be a harder trope for me, but this one was done beautifully. I loved watching them finally confront all the things they got wrong the first time around and figure out whether they could get it right now. I loved Quinn. I loved Liv. I loved them together. Five very easy stars. So, so well done!

"What We Got Wrong" was such an endearing read! Firstly, I loved the dual timeline. Peters’s writing made each transition from the past to present-day seamless and getting to see both Quinn’s and Liv’s stories unfold at the same time felt really special. I found myself rooting for them as young adults and as they navigated life years later! There were times where I would get frustrated with these two while they were in college, but that’s only because I am an adult now and can see their mistakes for what they are, not because of any issue I had with the story. Quinn was so full of joy and positivity, I immediately gravitated to her. Liv was such a caring and thoughtful person at both points in their timeline. I loved getting to watch her and her family process really painful experiences because it showed so much strength, perspective, and growth. And the side characters added SO much to the story as well, especially Mel and Emma! Overall, "What We Got Wrong" pulled at my heartstrings, elevated the importance of mature communication, and showed that the right way may just need a little more time.

I read the sample and had to know more!
Dual timeline......... Normally I can find them frustrating as the sections often end in cliffhangers. I much prefer this book where they feel like complete short stories. I am interested in both timelines so pacing isn't suffering. I think normally, because I know what happened, usually from the synopsis, I am bored with the past and just want more information on the present. Here, I don't really know what happened - tho I know the result, and do want to know how what happened, happened. I also want to see the present work out!
78% in and there have been hints how the past ended but we are not there yet and technically I don't know how the future gets its happy ending (no spoiler as this is a romance!). The pacing remains perfect, the present relationship and the past situationship continue to grip me. I am loving this book!
Well emotions felt, smiles breaking out when reading as well as some sentences making me stop and just think.... TRUTH!
I am delighted that this book exists and slightly awestruck that it is a debut!!

This book started out excellently. I loved the characters and their circumstances. I would have given the book 5 stars, but at the approximate halfway point, it slowed down and got darker. It's not a dark book, but both main characters were dealing with a lot and they also hurt each other. I really felt their emotions, and I wasn't really prepared for that. Things in my own life right now are kind of intense, and I was hoping for a lighter book. But that's on me. It's not a short book, and the dark parts seemed a bit drawn out, but again maybe that's just me. The writing is excellent, especially for a debut book, but there were quite a few minor errors--the worst were heeled instead of healed and intelligibly instead of unintelligibly and Liv instead of Emma. These characters are going to live inside my head for a while. I can see myself rereading this book if I can get into a better frame of mind. I look forward to future books from this series/author.

I devoured this book. It's got everything I love - a second chance romance with characters with palpable chemistry and a lovely amount of yearning/angst - and it's done well.
The ratio of flashbacks to college aged Quinn and Liv mixed in with the present was great. I have a hard time with the insta-love stories so the fact that so much time was spent during the flashbacks to really showcase why Quinn and Liv deserve their HEA was perfect.
Also, I really liked the use of secondary characters (particularly Emma who I hope gets her own book!) and how the friendships felt real when the characters were having honest and open dialogue with a twinge of awkwardness because, it doesn't matter how close you are to your friends, apologies can be uncomfortable.
A great debut book from this author. This goes on my "will definitely read again" bookshelf.

This is a debut from Elle “Pete” Peters and if that hadn’t been written at the end of the book (and on their Instagram) I wouldn’t have known it! This was written so well and had me hooked very early on. I was inflicted by a slew of emotions throughout the story, within the main storyline, but also with some of the side characters and past experiences of the main characters. I was equally frustrated and impressed with the MCs (at different times) and enjoyed seeing that there was some growth that happened off page to bring things back around. All of the miscommunication could have been its own character, but it did allow for some of the side characters to really shine! Also, Quinn is so hot 🤤, but Liv in a suit is just 🥵🥵🥵. I look forward to what come next from Peters (hopefully more of this universe)!

This is a new to me author’s debut book. It follows Quinn and Olivia (Liv) as they reunite after 10 years and rediscover their love for each other. It takes place in dual timelines, the past - the two of them meeting as roommates in college and the subsequent 4 years, and the present - in the modern day workforce at a joint conference. The book held steady pacing, with a good mix of past and present storytelling. I thought the writing was strong especially for a debut author. I thought the author also created a great list of side characters that supported the main characters and their story well. Read if you enjoy second chance romance, butch x femme, sports (college swimming), and dual timeline.

Beyond all the wonderful spice this book offers is the story of two very real and relatable characters and their journey from college to adulthood while trying to navigate young love and vastly different upbringings. Quinn, the very typical oldest child who grew up in a close-knit, loving, middle class family and adores her siblings and parents. Liv, whose pedigreed, old money family operates in a much less affectionate manner, but still love their daughter very much. First, thank you to Elle for sending me an ARC. I very much loved this book! I enjoyed the emotional maturity that the MC’s showed when it came to allowing for space to process emotions even though they didn’t always communicate with one another properly. I also really applaud the idea that apologies aren’t linear or one dimensional. I enjoyed the banter between all of the characters, and the true friendship they all seemed to have.
I would absolutely recommend this story to anyone who wants a good amount of spice, some heartbreak and a HEA in the end.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. What an awesome ride! I loved this book! The banter was real and funny. The feelings were so relatable, I could feel the cringe when they felt it. Elle Peters even did a brilliant job with the double timeline, which can be tough to navigate when writing and reading it for that matter. Such an awesome debut! This book has everything you could want, comedy, romance, second chances, and to me an amazing good time living through these characters! Could not recommend this enough. 10/10!

What We Got Wrong is a wonderfully written second chance romance from new author, Elle Peters. As this a second chance with a first love there is a lot of back and forth between now and then but both timelines are compelling and unfold the whole story at a sensible pace between the MC's. There are also some very loyal friends both in the past and present who keep Quinn and Olivia grounded and accountable in a supportive way. I think Elle Peters is going to be a new author to look out for and I am looking forward to reading what she writes next.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ALERT! I was about to give up on ARCs when I saw @ellepeterswrites mention her debut. Y'all it was FANTASTIC. it's easily in the top 5 of books I've read this year and I can't believe it's her DEBUT. Please grab this one! It's friends / roommates to lovers, second chances, spice heavy, butch x femme, dual timeline. I literally couldn't stop reading. There is mention of family loss but she handles it perfectly and there's so much humor in the book to balance. It's a perfect read!
