Jill Shelton is the author of Life in Bloom, the first book in the Charlie’s Next Chapters series.

For the past fifteen years, she has embraced life as a full-time nomad, trading the permanence of a brick-and-mortar existence for the liberation of the open road. 

She didn’t just visit the world, she moved into it, mastering the art of “slow travel” through house and pet sitting, caring for pets across the world, and discovering the stories hidden within ordinary moments.

An avid long-distance walker, she has travelled thousands of kilometres along the Camino’s of France, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy, finding inspiration in both the landscapes and the people she encountered along the way.



Those experiences became the foundation for Charlie’s story. Drawing from her own transitional chapters, Jill writes about reinvention, courage, connection, and the unexpected possibilities that can emerge in midlife and beyond.


Through Charlie, she invites readers to believe that life is not a single path, but a series of beautifully unscripted new beginnings.

This isn’t an easy path, Charlie has financial commitments and many women can relate to her predicament and I did. With the support of her mum Joanna, brothers Ben and Dan and friend Rachel she embarks on a journey to find herself again.

Life in Bloom (Charlie’s Next Chapters – Book One) by Jill Shelton is a narrative about over coming illness, having to start over, Charlie considering what she needs to keep or let go, opening herself up to doing new things, which can be both scary and exciting, and maybe she will travel within Australia and overseas?

Charlie certainly felt a connection to plants and flowers and what they represented to her and others. Flowers are with us during good times and bad, the birth of a baby, a gift on Valentine’s Day, in a wedding bouquet, delivered when someone passes away or a token to remember them by.

I really liked the close relationship Charlie has with her girls, the Monday night dinners and the importance of pets.

Five stars from me, an uplifting and inspirational story and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and I highly recommend for anyone who’s questioning what life is about and the crazy ride it can be.

Jill Shelton’s writing is so beautifully descriptive—she completely immerses you in every single place Charlie visits, from the first stomach-sinking moments of the council office, and the beautiful heaviness of family life, to quiet coastal house-sits and cheeky pets, and all the raw emotions along the way. You practically feel like you’re sitting at the dinner table with the family, or smelling the ocean breeze on every page.

What I loved most were the rich traditions weaving through the story, keeping Charlie grounded even as her world was shifting. Between the vivid travel settings, the heartwarming mother-daughter connections, and the sheer inspiration of watching a woman step out on her own terms, it felt like a beacon of hope for women (or men!) of any age.

I'm so glad my mum bought this for me - knowing I'm in the thick of this stage of life. Can't wait for the next book!

I have read Life in Bloom, and this story touched me in a way I didn't expect. It beautifully captures the transition of a woman who has spent years putting her family first and is finally learning that it's okay to choose herself too.
It isn't driven by dramatic twists; instead, it celebrates healing, family, second chances, and the courage to begin again.
One of my favourite moments was when Lily begged, "Mum, Dad, we can't separate them," while choosing the two rescue dogs. That scene perfectly captured the warmth and compassion that runs throughout the story.🐶🐶
The ending felt especially meaningful. Charlie returns home after all her travels, realizing that while home brings comfort, her curiosity for life hasn't faded. The final line, "There were still stories to write, new places to see, and the world was still waiting," was the perfect way to close her journey,it left me feeling hopeful rather than sad.❤️
This is a comforting, heartfelt read that reminds us that life continues to bloom, no matter where it takes us. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy emotional, character-driven stories.🥰🌸✨

This was quite the read, I enjoyed discovering this new to me author. Life in Bloom is exactly what the story is. It does have several meanings, and the title does most certainly correspond to the storyline. It has lovely characters the main one is Charlie who is married with four daughters and a busy life. The book is full of adventure and how a life already filled with so much has to change course. Life happens and Charlie needs to navigate and go through hardships and unexpected events. Crisis occur when least expected making Charlie take new steps into another direction and reinvent herself. All the time before she put everyone else first. Charlie does so many different things and tries new solutions and possibilities, figuring out her next step and chapter in her life. It's amazing how many things the main character is able to do and it's like a whirlwind sweeping past. It's a story of resilience and endurance and to find out what is best for Charlie and her in the long run the rest of her family. Charlie is a character full of life and a person that finds her way traveling around Australia to find out who she is and what she actually wants. The other characters in the book also have interesting lives going on.
Charlie followed her inner voice and spent her time going down the new path of her life. Finding her new happiness learning about herself and that reinvention was her next chapter.
I did so enjoy reading this book and can definitely recommend this read.

I’ve known Jill Shelton for years, and I’ve been rooting for Life in Bloom since it was just an idea. Honestly, seeing it out in the world is amazing, but reading it was even better. Jill completely nails the messy, quiet reality of midlife reinvention. The story follows Charlie, who spent decades putting her family first, as she finally learns to choose herself and start over.
Charlie's struggle to balance duty with her own self-worth feels so authentic. While the early chapters deal with some heavy hidden grief, it sets up an empowering journey about second chances. It’s definitely a slower, character-driven book focused on internal growth, but watching Charlie build a new life from scratch is incredibly rewarding.
I might be biased because Jill is my friend, but this really is a beautiful, inspiring read. If you love heartfelt women’s fiction about brave new beginnings, you need to grab a copy!

This is Ms Shelton's debut novel, one that definitely hits the spot.

The novel follows Charlie, devastated by a personal tragedy at the beginning of the book, changing Charlie's life and what she though she knew about her life with her husband and what she thought her future would encompass.

We see Charlie navigating the challenges her circumstances have now put in front of her while dealing with intense grief. Charlie's family and friends are great supporting characters, encouraging Charlie as she moves forward with her life, rediscovering pieces of herself she had lost or hidden in every day life.

I would happily read more from this author and recommend this novel to other readers.

In her debut novel, Jill writes about a woman who is easy to relate to.She experiences the transitions of life with curiosity and a positive attitude. Jill has fleshed out characters who seem like real people raised in a loving environment.
The descriptions of Australia brought me back to my time traveling there. And, I now live in Baja California, Mexico and enjoyed the vivid descriptions of this lovely place. The descriptive language conjures easy to imagine people and places, as well as authentic emotions.
One can’t help but root for Charlie and her friends and family as they navigate life. May she continue to grow and find new adventures!

It’s a beautiful, uplifting book about how life can turn on a dime, and tough choices need to be made. This is an easy to read, delightful story. The main character, Charlie is inspiring the way she tackles her life challenges.
