"Stem cells" have become linked with both new frontiers in medical science and political and ethical controversy. The field, along with the emerging area of regenerative medicine, is creating the conditions for a time when damaged tissue and organs might be repaired through personalized cell therapy as easily as the body repairs itself, therefore revolutionizing the treatment of numerous diseases. Educational, entertaining, and rigorously researched (with 300 references to scientific literature), Stem Cell Dialogues should be included in any effort to help the public understand the science, ethics, and policy concerns of this promising field.

As a person who lives in a third world country, I must say I got really suprised about the topics mentioned in this book because in here, we simply don't have the enviroment to discuss such topics and therefore we are not much aware of these scientific developments. The book is covering many potential futuristic applications that could be achieved through stem cells. The author designed this book on a dialogue thema in which there are opposing people discussing and I believe this method is a succesful method used for maintaining remarkable insight to the reader. The book is also giving a historical framework about stem cell developments and related scientific discoveries. However, since every dialogue consists of only around 6-7 pages, I must say I had to use Internet to find out some crucial details of the discussed topics. But yet, I think it is totally tolerable due to the aim of being more concise.

Keyif aldım. Bazı diyaloglar çok Amerika’nın iç meselelerine odaklı olsa da (şu araştırma şu kadar fonlanıyor, şu tür araştırmalar şu eyalette serbest falan) hem tıbbın geldiği uç noktalar hakkında fikir edinmek hem de embriyoların, kök hücrelerin yol açtığı etik sorunlar hakkında okumak hoşuma gitti. Mesela okurken çok şaşırdığım ve böyle bir olasılığın çok yakında gerçekleşebileceği söylenen bir kısım şuydu:
“+…Uyarılmış plüripotent kök hücre kullanma yöntemi, kadınların yumurtalıklarındaki yumurtalardan üretilen insan embriyolarının kullanılmasını ya da onlara hasar verilmesini gerektirmez. Yaptığımız şey insan derisi hücrelerini yeniden programlayarak embriyo benzeri plüripotent hücreler haline gelmelerini sağlamaktır.
- O hücreleri ne yapıyorsunuz?
+Üreme hücreleri dahil başka hücrelere dönüşmeleri için aktif hale getiriyoruz. Böylece insan embriyolarını parçalamamıza gerek kalmıyor, çünkü deneylerde kullandığımız hücrelerin tamamı deri hücrelerinden elde ediliyor.

Kitabın orijinali 2015’te yayınlandığına göre bu geçen sürede de epey bir aşama kaydedilmiştir diye düşünüyorum, o yüzden bu kitapta henüz yolun başında olunduğundan bahsedilen araştırmaların, klinik denemelerin şimdi ne durumda olduğunu merak ettim okurken. Bir gün sen de böyle olacaksın Türkiyem diye de geçirdim içimden.
