I had been so excited by the premise of this one. A post-apocalyptic Isle of Skye, mutated survivors with god-like powers, a girl determined to bring down a ruthless queen, and the queen’s own son caught in the middle? It sounded like it had everything I usually love. 💔 Unfortunately, the execution just didn’t work for me.
Vesper wanted to destroy the world Queen Creyta had built, while Prince Hunter had been sent to destroy her. As the two grew closer, the story tried to balance revenge, survival, and impossible choices. ❤️⚔️ It had all the ingredients for an emotional, high-stakes fantasy, but I never felt fully invested because the plot and character decisions rarely made sense to me.
One of my biggest struggles was the characterization. 😕 The characters were introduced one way, only to suddenly behave like completely different people without enough development to make those changes believable. People who were supposed to be ruthless, terrifying, and willing to kill suddenly became frightened and backed down for no convincing reason. The constant shifts made it difficult to understand anyone’s motivations.
The romance also didn’t click for me. 😬 The FMC calling the MMC “boy” over and over at the beginning immediately gave me the ick, and it was something I never really got past.
Hunter’s storyline frustrated me the most. 🤦♀️ We were told his powers were incredibly dangerous and almost unstoppable, yet he repeatedly became his mother’s puppet. Why continue obeying someone he could have defeated? Why let Queen Creyta walk away after everything she had done? Those choices felt completely at odds with the power the story kept telling us he possessed.
The plot itself often relied on events happening simply because the story needed them to happen rather than because they felt natural. 🌀 Conflicts were resolved too easily, villains lost their menace without explanation, and several emotional moments didn’t land because the logic behind them felt inconsistent. Instead of building tension, I found myself questioning the characters’ decisions.
This book may work better for readers who enjoy:

Forgotten Skye is a book you absolutely need to read.
The opening is fantastic. It immediately immerses the reader in the story instead of leaving us confused for the first fifty pages wondering what is happening or where we are. The premise feels fresh and unique, telling a story that is unlike anything you'll easily find elsewhere.
Vesper is an incredible heroine—a true lioness of a young woman who is forced far too early to learn how to survive. Hunter is a prince who suddenly finds himself trapped in a role we quickly learn he never wanted. With the Queen controlling every aspect of life on the island—including his own—he has little choice but to obey her. Yet he cleverly finds his own way to resist and slowly break free from the chains she has placed upon him.
At one point, I genuinely thought, Oh no... is this going to be another Hunger Games copy? Trust me—it absolutely isn't.
The chemistry between Vesper and Hunter is electric. Their tension is so tangible that all you can think is, When are these two finally going to admit how they feel?
Then the twists start coming... and honestly, I didn't see them coming.
The side/characters are phenomenal, and the alliances that form throughout the story constantly caught me by surprise. Roz masterfully leads the reader down one path before pulling an entirely unexpected rabbit out of the hat.
The descriptions of the scenes and emotions feel incredibly vivid. You don't simply read them—you experience them. The characters we're meant to love become easy to love, while those we're meant to hate become impossible not to hate, without the author ever forcing those feelings upon us. She doesn't just tell the story—she shows it. Because of that, the emotions on the page become our own.
And that ending...

Exactly the kind of ending I love, and the perfect foundation for book two. It left me desperate to know what happens next and wondering how soon she'll write the sequel.
So why four stars instead of five?
Simply because I felt that, in a few places, some very important scenes weren't given enough room to breathe. A handful of moments happened so quickly that I wished the author had spent just a little more time developing them so they could carry the emotional weight they deserved.
Also—and this is entirely personal preference—I noticed that almost everyone seemed to have blue eyes, which stood out to me a little.

That ending has my jaw on the floor and I’m so shocked and not sure what could even happen next!
You follow a the FMC who’s spent most of her life hiding and trying to survive as a “bland” who is a human that when the apocalypse came was not mutated and given any abilities/ god like powers. Those with powers are who are in charge on her island and she has almost no way to escape being hunted by them other than hiding. But when dead animals and eventually a person shows up on her door, her grandfather and sister flee, but she doesn’t want to leave the only cabin her parents know behind so she stays, only to get caught up with the prince who is the head hunter of the blands finding her and instead of killing her, saves her life and takes her to be a part of these hunting games where she could earn permanent safety.
I really enjoyed the multiple POVs and seeing the pair slowly learn more about each other and be surprised by their own feelings. The hunting games also made for an exciting backdrop for the storyline and of course includes some terrifying deaths and betrayals I didn’t see coming. The post apocalypse collapse of society still has some living as the less thans and others with power unwilling to share and I found the way in which the blands were treated both horrifying but also as a way to control all their people from those in charge. This story makes you feel the full rollarcoaster of emotions and it keeps you well wrapped up in the book until that cliffhanger at the end! My rating 4.4/5!

As soon as I heard this would be based in Isle of Skye I immediately wanted to read it. I was both excited and anxious for this as I have read some books that the author clearly hasn’t been to Scotland but wrote it anyway and this thankfully wasn’t it!
I find sometimes with fantasy or dystopian authors that a lot of time is given over to lengthy details of the world and what has gone wrong/made the world the way it is which isn’t a bad thing at all however in this novel you are thrown right into the thick of it immediately so if you like a fast paced book then this would suit you fine. This book also has a fair few twists throughout to keep you on your toes and guessing as well.
The characters were very well written and the scenes were almost cinematic in detail. There is a lot of strong descriptions that can really help you build a vivid picture to feel really immersed in the book. The book also had multiple POV which I really enjoyed as I felt we got a little bit of insight to everyone and how they were feeling and thinking which I feel added another layer to the novel. I went into this hoping for a lot Hunger Games vibes which it does have but I feel that it doesn’t heavily push on this but more so on more of the sci fi and romance elements – which suits me fine!
The ending was extremely well done and I am really looking forward to book 2!

Forgotten Skye was a fun read. I loved the deadly trials aspect, and the overall concept of the entire book was intriguing. The FMC, Vesper, was really fun to read about, and I loved her personality. She's fiesty and a really strong character throughout the book. The MMC, Hunter, is clever with every idea he presented to her during the trials, which I loved. There were so many plot twists in this book, some of which had my jaw dropping; especially the one at the end of chapter 20.
I would, however, have loved for there to be some more depth between the MMC and FMC's chemistry, as everything did happen rather quickly. I would have also liked to discover a bit more about the world towards the start, especially from Vesper's POV. Still, I do think this is a good read with lots of potential in the books to come. This was a 3.5 star read for me (rounded up to 4 because the ending really elevated the book). As a huge fan of dystopian fiction, I found so much to love about Forgotten Skye. The premise gives off incredible Hunger Games meets X-Men vibes, and it absolutely delivers on suspense. I initially worried it might be predictable, but I was completely wrong—the plot twists kept me guessing, and that ending completely shocked me!
My only critiques are that the emotional development between Vesper and Hunter needed a bit more depth, and some of the dialogue felt slightly out of place. However, the world-building and unpredictable plot more than made up for it. This series has huge potential, and I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

One of my favourite #indieauthor has done it again!! Its beginning to feel like YA dystopian is Roz's speciality cause she does it so well!
Book 1 in the Forgotten Skye Trilogy introduces a world changed by radiation with humanity split between blands (us normies) and Radians with enhanced abilities and powers.
With a dual POV we follow Vesper and Hunter as they navigate the intense draw they have to each other despite being enemies!
The story has a great pace and propels you from one heart wrenching plot point to another and then the ending kicks your feet out from under you.
I definitely sent Roz a DM along the lines of "WTF?!? WHY?"
The beauty of this is that book 2 and 3 are already written and it wont be long until I get my hands on them *insert evil laugh

I had this as an ARC and it didn’t disappoint. Forgotten Skye is a charged read full of high stakes and unforgettable characters. The duel perspective works well as you understand the situation through both the eyes of a Raiden and Bland. The setting is splendid on the Isle of Skye where the sky is green and mutated animals as well as humans exist in constant battle. My favourite character was Hunter as he wasn't your usual arrogant, over protective male lead. He was empathetic and doing the best he could in an impossible situation. Roz you left me stunned at the end.

This book was absolutely so good. The emotional rollercoaster was insane, and I will be sending Roz Mclaren a bill for my therapy, but it was totally worth it. Hunter and Vesper were both really well written characters, and I love the romance between them. The plot is a really good mix of fantasy and dystopian, which I really enjoyed. I really liked how most of the characters were really morally grey. It makes all of them a lot more relatable and sympathetic. I cannot even put into words how much I enjoyed this book. Please please please run and go get it! Thank you so much to Roz Mclaren for this arc!

This is a great action packed short read with plenty of mystery, high stakes and character development throughout.
Our FMC is hardened and strong and clever with our MMC closed off, softer and holding onto secrets.
We have betrayals, Hunter Vs prey, corrupt royalty, the past coming up to bite us and so many interesting secondary characters feeding into the journey.
And what an ending!!!
This is a great action packed short read with plenty of mystery, high stakes and character development throughout.

Forgotten Skye is Book 1 in The Ruined Skye Trilogy and is a post-apocalyptic YA romantasy story with Trials.
From page 1 on, this book had me completely hooked. It got off to a very exciting start right from the beginning and made it impossible for me to put it down! I really liked the post-apocalyptic vibe, as the sci-fi aspect fit in very well for me and the transition to romantasy was very seamless. Above all, I thought the story was very well-structured, with an exciting but not overly complex magic system, thrilling Trials and some unpredictable twists.
I also really liked the characters; the FMC, Vesper, in particular, is very brave, strong, and fights for what she wants. The MMC, Hunter, also felt very authentic to me and had to grapple with some difficult issues. The tension was palpable and completely drew me in. I also thought the supporting characters were wonderful, and I really liked some of them.
Sometimes I wish certain scenes or character developments had been given a little more space or time. The book is quite short, so some scenes moved very quickly. It would have been great if those scenes had been developed a bit more or had lasted a little longer. Other than that, I loved the book, and I really liked the plot and the ending. I can’t wait to read Book 2!!!
