I read this story years ago and was so happy to have the chance to listen to it now as an audio book! The narrator had a very pleasant voice and did a great job with this novella. She changed her tone of voice for various characters, yet it was not overdone. This was a fun story to listen to.

Jo certainly had the tendency to jump to conclusions in this story. She caused herself so much worry and angst due to the things she assumed. Tom and Jo teased back and forth and there was some great banter between the two. A few open conversations between these characters would have meant that they could have realized how much they cared for each other earlier, yet there would have been much less of the spirited teasing that made the novella a lighthearted and fun choice for a Christmas story to enjoy.

The Fruitcake Challenge is a cozy Christmas read, but a romance to enjoy for all seasons!

In her lifetime, “Jo” Josephine Christy has had to put up with the shenanigans of many different fellows—big, hulking lumberjacks with everything from humble to aggressive personalities, men from all over the world. She was raised in a logging camp and grew up working alongside her now-deceased mother in the camp kitchen. But in all that time, no man has ever annoyed her so much as their new axeman, Tom Jeffries.

He’s an arrogant, smooth talker who flaunts his intelligence and devilishly handsome looks like one who has never known rejection. Jo would like nothing better than to take the proud rooster down a peg. Especially when he issues a challenge: “I have decided I’ll marry any gal who can bake a fruitcake just like my mother makes every Christmas.”

The audacity! The workers in the cookhouse rise to the challenge, and the men are caught up in the excitement. Obviously, Tom has instigated this challenge just to irk her. But could he be serious? Why does something in Jo’s heart wish it to be true? And why does she keep baking fruitcake after fruitcake just to prove she’s not one to back down from a challenge, even though everything within her longs to be freed of a life tied to a lumber camp. She wants a life beyond the one she’s always known and that most certainly does not include marriage to a lumberjack. She’s twenty-five years old and time is running out on her dreams.

She’s about to discover there’s more to Tom Jeffries than what meets the eye. . . .

I love this story! The Fruitcake Challenge is a well-written novella with warmth and humor. I enjoyed all the characters but especially Jo and Tom, in their confusion about their futures, looking for God’s guidance. I really enjoyed the unusual Victorian setting of a wintry, rugged logging camp in northern Michigan. There’s lots to enjoy in this heartwarming story—romance, family, yummy food, the scent of the pines and a crackling fire to warm you in the cold woods!

Do you love fruitcake for the holidays ? Even if you don't, The novella The Fruitcake is not to be missed. The Fruitcake Challenge novella features Tom Jeffries, the new lumberjack in camp and Josephine Christy ,the head camp cook. She had taken over as head cook since her mother's passing. Her two brothers Ox and Moose are overly protective of her and chase away any possible suitors. When Tom first arrives at the camp Jo finds him annoying and always shoos him out of the kitchen whenever he tries to talk to her.As the book progresses she finds herself falling for him but he seems not to be interested. Tom decides to have a contest and offer a marriage proposal as the prize for whomever make a fruitcake that tastes the most like his mothers. Unbeknownst to Tom ,Jo starts corresponding with Tom's mother to get the exact recipe so she can duplicate it for him and win the contest. Win it she does and she happily accepts his proposal. I recommend this hope filled Christmas story to everyone.

*audiobook review
A narrator can easily make or break a read, and in this case the narrator did a wonderful job making this a super enjoyable listen. She did a great job with both the male and female voices. Her lively energy kept me invested and wanting to see how everything would unfold

The story had interesting characters and and endearing, fun plot. I could picture it being a Christmas movie. It was a light read with plenty of humor. Unfortunately my favorite part would involve a spoil so I won't share it here, but it certainly brought a smile to my face. If you know me, I don't typically read Christmas stories but I actually enjoyed this one. I think others would enjoy it as well.

I really enjoyed the audiobook version of this novella! I thought that the narrator did a great job bringing these characters to life. I really liked Tom and his challenge. I loved how it brought so many people together. I enjoyed getting to know these characters during this short story. I hope that we will see them again in another story one day. I liked the details that helped bring the story to life too. I liked reading a story set in a lumber camp. It’s a setting that I haven’t read a lot about. I also liked the author’s note at the end.

I was given a free review copy of the audiobook and have voluntarily left this review. The thoughts and opinions expressed are mine alone.

"The Fruitcake Challenge" discloses the late 1800s tale of a family logging camp and the people whose livelihood depends upon the magnificent white pines known to Michigan, both upper and lower peninsulas. These massive forests were cut for use in building growing communities.

The new axman to the camp poses a challenge to the daughter of the camp's owner. If she could make a fruitcake that was as good as his mother's he would ask her to marry him.

This is a sweet story of family, faith and relationships between family and friends, loss and hope. It's a warm telling of a group of people working hand in hand toward the same goals. I could easily envision the area, and could feel the icy chill from the Great Lakes.

There is both a serious thread throughout this novella that reaches the heart, and a touch of humor that warms the soul. I'd like to have seen this book developed with greater depth and character, but as a novella it was a warm and cozy read. Grab a copy of this short book and enjoy with a pot of tea or a cup of hot cocoa!

A fun Christmas read!

Lumberjack Tom Jeffries issues a fruitcake challenge, and though he comes across a little too cocky, cook Jo Christy cannot resist the opportunity to prove her fruitcake prowess. Of course, as she gets closer and closer to replicating his mother’s recipe, real feelings begin to grow.

Carrie Fancett Pagels’s The Fruitcake Challenge is an easy, entertaining listen. It offers a fun premise with an interesting historical setting and plenty of banter, and I could not help flying through the narrative. I enjoyed it, and I bet that other readers needing a quick, heartwarming audiobook will enjoy it, too.

The Fruitcake Challenge was such a fun and enjoyable novella! It takes place back in the late 1800’s in a lumber camp near Mackinaw City, Michigan. The author did a great job of crafting a sweet story, set in an interesting time period. The story was full of historic details that made me feel that I was back in time.

I really liked the two main characters, Tom & Jo. The marriage challenge that Tom issues to Jo is a lighthearted thread that runs through the story. There are also misunderstandings and both of these characters must seek the Lord’s guidance and His direction for their lives. This is an uplifting Christmas story that brought a smile to my face.

This is a fun book to read. The hero is such an honest and forthright man that he was easy for me to love. His sense of humor is extremely appealing, though not always appreciated. His kindness and thoughtfulness come easy, and he is so genuine. He does, however, have some secrets, so he’s quite a mystery to Jo, the heroine. Due to Josephine’s circumstances, she has insecurities, when it comes to personal relationships with men. She isn’t really sure what to make of Tom, his refined manners, and his mysterious background.

If you are looking for a historical, Christmas read, I’m sure you will enjoy The Fruitcake Challenge.

I read this book in one sitting during a road trip and enjoyed it very much. It is a sweet and funny story with a very good Christmas feel.

Jo is a well crafted character. Her independent streak drove me crazy! Haha. She struggles with rebellion and wanting to forge her own way, but she learns that waiting on God and surrendering to His will is always best and will turn out better than your greatest plans.

There was one kissing scene, but other than that it was very clean.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable Christmas read.

I love reading books set in lumber camps in the north woods, and this novella did not disappoint. The characters were fun yet each had vulnerabilities, especially Jo. She is in a rough time in her life with the recent passing of her mother and wanting to strike out on her own yet feeling the emotional tie to her remaining family. Tom's arrogance is off-putting to her and she lets him know it! As they each mellow over time they learn to appreciate the sweetness in each other. Tom's fruitcake challenge turns out to be the impetus for other couples to make a match themselves.

A beautiful Christmas story with fruitcake pushed into the mix and romance.
A quick narrative, I enjoyed this quick tale that pulls you into the spirit of the holidays. Set in a lumber camp in the middle of Michigan, it revolves around the cooks and the lumberjacks.
I loved Jo's spunk and her desire to rise up to the challenge even when she wasn't sure what her heart wanted.
It was a wonderful heartwarming tale.

This delightful novella is set in a lumberjack camp in upper Michigan. Tom Jeffries, though trained as a teacher, has taken a job in the Christy Lumber Camp in order to send money home to his widowed mother. Jo Christy is the daughter of the owner of the camp and currently serves as head cook after her mother's death. She is staunchly protected from the lumberjacks by her huge brothers, Ox and Moose along with her father.

Filled with delightful humor and multiple romances, Tom sets up a contest that if Jo can make a fruitcake as good as his mother's, he will marry her. All of the other cook's helpers get in on the act as they try out their various fruitcake recipes and find themselves with proposals from other lumberjacks. But can Jo find the secret ingredient that will make her fruitcake the perfect one?

The humor, warmth, connnection between all the "jacks" and the developing romance along with interesting characters including a "blue" dog made this a quick enjoyable read.

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a straight up newbie when it comes to audiobooks. I've listened to a few but I struggled to stay focused (thanks ADD!) and gave up, but I am back and giving a different genre a shot in hopes of finally being able to finish an audiobook.

The Fruitcake Challenge is my first "read" by Carrie Fancett Pagels, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The heroine, Jo Christy, is addressed numerous times throughout the book as Ms. Christy. My name being Christi as well gave it a cool little twist for me, really helping me to put myself in Jo's position, and to become immersed in this world.

Poor Jo is in a world full of lonely lumberjacks and not very many women. Proposals and perusals are plentiful but are warded off by Jo's two older, and very protective, brothers. That is, until Tom Jeffries, the new, confident and incredibly handsome lumberjack, comes into town, catching Jo's eye, and leaving her unsure about how she feels about him. Tom is unimpressed with Jo at first glance, but decides to offer a challenge to the camp cook: if she can make a fruitcake "as good as the one my mother makes" then Tom will marry her. Jo, intent on bringing this cocky lumberjack down a peg, rises to the challenge, and it is this challenge that changes everything.

I adored the banter between Tom and Jo, loving the funny parts, but also appreciating the serious parts as well. At first, the narrator's voice was a little stiff for me, but once I got a few chapters in I really started to enjoy listening to narrator Virginia Gray, her male and female voices wonderfully done, helping to paint a wonderful picture of The Fruitcake Challenge and Tom and Jo's story.

I will say, audiobooks are redeemed for me, thanks to The Fruitcake Challenge. Will they replace actual books for me? No, but I still enjoyed the experience nonetheless, this novella so witty and sweet, the lightheartedness exactly what I needed during this season.

I love this book! Partly because I live in Michigan and partly because I enjoyed the history that author Carrie Fancett Pagels incorporated into the story. And it was just a great book! I mean, who doesn’t like to read about fruitcakes and lumberjacks at Christmas. As always, Pagels doesn’t disappoint.

A heartwarming novella, you’ll find yourself pulling for Tom and Jo. Even when they are pushing each other away. There’s a lot of fun that involves the fruitcake challenge, along with mischief and spunk. You’ll smell the pine of the trees, hear the laughter of the people in the camp, and be so glad you made the journey to Northern Michigan!

Audiobook review

The Fruitcake Challenge is so enjoyable—even though the mention of fruitcake normally makes me cringe. haha I enjoyed the light feel and the fun banter between Jo and Tom. The humor is fun and unites the story in a neat way.

Jo has a complex personality with a strong spirit. Tom has a bit of swag and is oh-so-easy to love. Their romance is highly amusing and entertaining, offering a satisfying conclusion.

This story shares a sweet romance with easy-to-root-for characters and an inspiring spiritual core.

Virginia Gray has a pleasant voice, fluctuating nicely with the different characters. Her voice is soft and feminine, yet her male character interpretations are not distracting. She breathes life into the variety of characters.

The production quality of this audio book is clear with no distracting noises or music.

The Fruitcake Challenge is a fun, clean story. I enjoyed the lumber camp setting, the characters, adventure, challenge, and humor. I recommend this light-hearted fun Christmas story.

3.5 but I rounded to 4 Stars

The setting for this is the late 1800s at a family owned logging camp.

As I read about the camp and all the teasing and fun that the characters enjoyed together, I could almost visualize the setting.

The Fruitcake Challenge

This challenge occurs when Josephine “Jo” Christy, who is the camp cook, catches the eye of new lumberjack Tom Jeffries.

Jo, who has grown up in a logging camp, cooked alongside her mother until her mother passed away. She is left taking over her mother’s role as cook. Though she is used to teasing from the men, unfortunately the new lumberjack, Tom Jeffries, just rubs her wrong.

So when he presents a challenge that he will marry the girl who can bake a fruitcake as good as his mother makes every Christmas, Jo has the perfect plan to put him down.

But will it work as she plans? And does Tom have plans of his own?

What Concerned Me
Unfortunately, the narrator didn’t really work for me. She was not bad, just didn’t do the best with voice variances.

I also felt the story was very predictable. And maybe I missed it, but I didn’t feel the flow between dislike and like/love between Jo and Tom.

What I Liked Most
The setting was one I’ve never experienced before. I found it very interesting to learn about logging in the late 1800s in Northern Michigan. I also enjoyed parts of the sweet love story that develops between Jo and Tom.

My thanks to JustRead Publicity Tours and the author for a copy of this audiobook. I was completely free to post my opinion of this audio.

This is such a fun book to listen to. It's a Christmas book but it's also a romance and so you can really read or listen to this at any time of the year. Definitely, one that I can highly recommend to everyone.

So what's it about?

Jo lives in a lumberjack camp and as such, she's used to all the contests and boasts of the men. But when Tom( a new lumberjack to the camp) makes her a dare she knows that she must rise to the occasion and win. Of course, what she wins is the right to marry him. And of course, she plans to turn him down. That's why she has to win. To take his cocky self down a notch or two.

But what she doesn't count on is what she learns about Tom as she tries to make the best fruitcake ever and what that does to her heart.

This is a well written short novella. But don't worry the story doesn't end there. There are some sequels just waiting for you to read them as well.

I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

What stood out to me from the beginning of the audiobook version of The Fruitcake Challenge by Carrie Fancett Pagels was the characterization that narrator Virginia Gray gave each character’s dialogue, even those with the smallest of roles. Then, as often happens when skilled narrations combine with well crafted stories, thoughts of the narrators skills gave way to sheer enjoyment of the fictional events unfolding.

Set in the 1890’s, this novella opens with schoolteacher Tom Jeffries joining a family logging camp in order to better support his widowed mother. His courtship of the camp owner’s daughter and head camp cook, Jo Christy, is met with resistance and the fruitcake challenge he issues has more consequences than he anticipates.

With sweet romance, grief, personal dilemmas, and a bit of danger, this is a lovely novella to listen to or read, no matter the time of year. The narration is well paced and a pleasant 3 hour 12 minute listen - best enjoyed with sugar cookies and hot chocolate on hand.

This review refers to an audiobook I voluntarily received from the author. A positive review was not required and these are only my own honest opinions.

About the audiobook: Mackinac, Michigan in 1890..Josephine (Jo) Christy’s mother passed away and even though Jo was hoping to leave the lumber camp that her dad runs, she has taken over as head cook. Tom has come to work as an axman to make some much needed money for his family even though that’s not his normal occupation.
Tom takes a fancy to Jo. He issues a camp wide statement that if someone can make a fruitcake as good as his mom’s then he will marry that person.
Jo takes on this challenge
thinking she will make the cake and then reject Tom. As Tom and Jo spend more time together and Jo gets support from many of the camp members, she decides she may actually want to win Tom’s heart through a fruitcake.

My thoughts: This was a great Christian novella and a quick listen. First of all I have always wanted to visit the setting of this book so when I heard Mackinac my ears were on high alert.
The details and atmosphere of how a lumber camp ran was something I knew nothing about until this book and I felt the details brought the camp to life.
I learned from this listen that a lumber camp is like it’s own small town. At one point in the book, the camp school master gets outed for mistreating the students and Tom steps in as a hero in the situation. I thought that was not only a great story detail but one of the many subtle ways that the book shows Tom’s character.

Multiple romances began from the fruitcake challenge and I thought that was a sweet aspect.

My favorite characters were Jo’s twin brothers, Ox and Moose, and how they interact with their sister, each other and Tom.

This was refreshing and uplifting listen and I will need to add other books by this author to my TBR and read the other books in this Christy Lumber Camp series.

The Fruitcake Challenge
Christy Lumber Camp #1
By Carrie Fancett Pagels
Narrated by Virginia Gray

Jo Christy has no desire to spend the rest of her days in her family's lumber camp, and she certainly has no intention of marrying a lumberjack. So when Tom Jefferies joins up with the camp, she is less than thrilled with his attentions.

Tom Jefferies has left behind the life he has known for the lumber camps of Michigan. Working as a lumberjack pays better than his previous job as a teacher. It is hard work, but he needs the pay to help support his mother. He never expected to meet someone like Miss Josephine Christy working at the Christy Family Lumber Camp.

Jo Christy seems determined to ignore all of Tom's flattery and attempts at courting. But when Tom issues his Fruitcake Challenge, she sees this as the perfect opportunity to put him in his place. But as the fruitcake challenge progresses, she has a chance to get to know Tom better - if only he wasn't a lumberjack.

I experienced this book in the audio format, and it was well presented. The narration by Virginia Gray fits well with the story. I did listen to the book at 1.2 speed (or faster), but I always listen to my audiobooks faster than the default speed - I listen at the pace I read. But even at the regular speed, the pacing is good.

If you want an enjoyable escape to 1890s Michigan's lumber camps, this is the perfect way to do so. This is a clean read. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of Historical Fiction, are fascinated by America's logging past, or have a thing for fruitcake.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

3…The Fruitcake Challenge, a Christmas Traditions Novella #3 by Carrie Fancett Pagels

Our hero/heroin live and work near Mackinaw City in Northern Michigan's logging camp in 1890. Josephine-Jo Christy, daughter of the camp's owner, is the camps cook and longs to leave and find another life for herself. She has vowed to leave once this camp site moves on to the next camp site where the white pines they harvest are plentiful. Jo longs to marry and have a family but does not want to marry a lumberjack. Tom Jeffries is a teacher but teaching jobs are scarce and pay little, so he finds a job with the Christy logging camp as a lumberjack to support himself and his widowed mother.

Both Jo and Tom have prayed for God's leading in their lives and question His direction at times. Tom challenges Jo to bake a fruitcake like his mothers', if she does he will marry her. Jo takes up the challenge, not to marry him but to take him down a notch or two—he is way too cocky, and besides he is a lumberjack. But over the months as they get to know each other and Jo bakes one fruitcake after another that doesn't meet Tom's specifications, Jo begins to rethink baking yet one more fruitcake. Tom now has second thoughts on his challenge to Jo, he wants to marry her but not because of her baking a fruitcake. Things don't go smoothly as the deadline gets closer. Even though Jo's fruitcakes are not like Tom's mothers', each fruitcake she bakes spark romance in other unlikely couples.

I loved the sparks between Jo and Tom, each trying not to admit to themselves that there is an attraction. I like the way the author includes Jo and Tom's thoughts showing their uncertainty and how vulnerable they really are. The description of how remote the logging camp really is from the nearest town and the difficulty traveling back and forth gives us a glimpse of their way of life. Those in the camp are more like family than co-workers and rely on each other daily. No story would be complete without surprises, and this one includes some surprises along the way keeping the reader engrossed in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would like to see more of the characters in a follow-up story.

This was a cute story. I didn't realize it was a novella at first. I thought the storyline was going fast for some reason. lol

Tom shows up at a lumberjack camp looking for work. This is a man who should be a teacher, not a lumberjack, but he was doing what he needed to do. When he first glimpses Josephine, he's a goner and does everything he can to make his attentions known to her.

Jo doesn't want to give Tom the time of day. Unfortunately, he proves himself relentless and she can't resist his attempts to get to know her better. When he suggests if she makes a fruitcatke that matches his mother's, he'll marry her, she decides she's up for the challenge. She's grown up around lumberjacks and doesn't want to live in the camp forever. If she were to marry a lumberjack, she'd never escape.

Her brothers make things difficult for Tom to have time with Jo, but after the initial meeting it's more in a humorous way. At one point, Tom stops a bad guy with a punch, but when Jo finally sees the bad guy he's all beat up and she basically accuses Tom of being a violent man. Of course, the brothers had a hand in that.

They have some miscommunication and question each other over certain events. There's also a bit of mystery involving Tom's mom. What's a novella if the characters don't have a bit of angst, right?

*I received this book from JustReads Publicity Tour. This is my personal opinion.

A well-educated and cocky lumberjack, a pretty camp cook who wants to leave, a spicy romance, and a nourishing spiritual message are just a handful of the ingredients making up this mouth-watering and engaging novella. Yum!

In the towering Northwoods of Michigan near Mackinaw city in the year 1890, former teacher Tom Jeffries takes up a position as the new axeman of the logging camp, in an effort to earn more money for his widowed mother. Smitten with the beautiful auburn-haired Jo Christy who is the boss’s daughter and the camp cook, Tom carelessly proposes to marry her if she can bake a fruitcake as good as his mother’s. But the spunky Jo only accepts the handsome lumberjack’s challenge, because she plans to take him down a few pegs by declining his offer when she produces the cake of his memories. During the cake-baking trials, couples left and right of them are becoming engaged, but will this stubborn pair find their way towards a future together when their paths are heading in opposite directions?

Set amongst the imposing and breathtaking evergreen woods of Michigan that echo with the songs of bountiful birds while aromatic fruitcakes are baking in the camp oven, the descriptive imagery throughout ‘The Fruitcake Challenge’ tantalizes the senses and might I say, gives you a craving for fruit cake! You’ll find the rich historical insights permeating this story, fascinating and well-researched, bringing the yesteryear setting alive. And enriching this cozy Christmas tale that’s full of surprises is a reassuring message that reminds us to never give up, because God has a plan for us all.

Heartwarming Yuletide Novella!

In The Fruitcake Challenge, author Carrie Fancett Pagels sweeps the reader away to 1800s Michigan, where the scent of freshly cut massive white pines and the tantalizing aroma of baked fruitcakes and sugar cookies permeate the reader's senses!

Jo Christy is the spunky cook at a lumber camp owned by her father, but has dreams of being on her own and running her own bakery. Although Jo is 25 yrs old, she is carefully guarded against the likes of the cocky, handsome new lumberjack, Tom Jeffries, by her two bulldog brothers -- Ox and Moose. Not that she needs to be babysat, however, as she finds the know-it-all Tom totally insufferable, and is quite capable of fighting off his advances herself. But when Tom puts forth a challenge that he will marry any woman who can bake a fruitcake as good as his mother's, Jo attempts to rise to the occasion for a joke...or is it?

The Fruitcake Challenge is a heartwarming, Yuletide novella guaranteed to awaken the reader's senses with its descriptive imagery and the distinctive, tangible aura of Christmas! With a deep spiritual thread of hope throughout, and loveable, fleshed out characters -- readers will find themselves totally immersed in the lives of Tom and Jo. When I finish a story with tears in my eyes, I know that not only have I just concluded a satisfying read, but an anointed one as well! This would make an excellent Christmas gift for family and friends! Nicely done, Ms. Pagels!

BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB
(from Amazon.com)
When new lumberjack, Tom Jeffries, tells the camp cook, Jo Christy, that he'll marry her if she can make a fruitcake, "as good as the one my mother makes," she rises to the occasion. After all, he's the handsomest, smartest, and strongest axman her camp-boss father has ever had in his camp--and the cockiest. And she intends to bring this lumberjack down a notch or three by refusing his proposal. The fruitcake wars are on! All the shanty boys and Jo's cooking helpers chip in with their recipes but Jo finds she'll have to enlist more help--and begins corresponding with Tom's mother.

Step back in time to 1890, in beautiful Northern Michigan, near the sapphire straits of Mackinac, when the white pines were "white gold" and lumber camps were a way of life. Jo is ready to find another life outside of the camps and plans that don't include any shanty boys. But will a lumberjack keep her in the very place she's sworn to leave?

MY REVIEW
Carrie did a great job on this short story. I don't like fruitcake, my mom loved it and used to make it, but it made for a good storyline and I liked how everyone in the camp seemed to get in on the contest in one way or another. If you want something quick and fun to read I would recommend this to you.

I was given this e-book as a gift from the author, she did not request a review be done. This review is my honest opinion of this book.

A well-narrated audiobook can sweep me away from whatever task I’m doing as I’m listening, and The Fruitcake Challenge by Carrie Fancett Pagels (narrated by Virginia Gray) was one such book.

The unique setting of a Michigan lumber camp and the many characters who resided there—from Jo to her brothers to the other cooks and lumberjacks—kept the plot moving and entertaining. Jo and Tom may clash at first, but quickly grow to respect each other.

Virginia Gray’s narration of both the male and female points of view is excellent, not detracting at all from the story.

With baking, good will, and a spirit of giving, The Fruitcake Challenge is a quick afternoon listen (that may put you in the mood to do some of your own Christmas baking).

This a short Novella set in a lumberjack camp. It a short and sweet historical fiction story that involves the courtship of the camp cook, Jo to the newest lumberjack, Tom.

I loved the “enemies” to lovers troupe. It definitely kept me wondering. I would have loved to seen this story developed more, but this was perfect for a novella.

It isn’t necessarily a Christmas story and can be read all year long. Strong 3.5 stars.

What A Heartwarming Read!

This novella will have you wanting more. This is the first book I have read by author Carrie Fancett Pagels. It won’t be the last.

Life was not easy in 1890 near Mackinaw City, Michigan, especially if you were a lumberjack like Tom Jeffries, and life was not easy being a cook as Jo Christy was, feeding the men and their families in her fathers camp.

I had quite a fondness for Tom Jeffries and Jo Christy. They grew on me from the very beginning. There were many other characters in this story that I enjoyed too.

This story shows that faith and hope, go hand in hand. When you put your trust in the Mighty hand of God, dreams can come true.

So, just what does the title, The Fruitcake Challenge, have to do with lumberjacks and cooks? I think when you find out, you will be smiling and rooting for the characters in this book. I do hope you plan to read this novella. The end had me tearing up. I gave this book five stars all the way!

I wish to thank the author for allowing me to read this great story! The opinions expressed are mine alone.
