I married my best friend, the love of my life, we have two beautiful daughters, and I love serving my country. On my spare time, I love scribbling and making my words come to life. I love writing romance stories about couples that go through trials and come out stronger. Love is never easy, but it's worth all the hard work. You know how you see a house from afar and you think it is real pretty? The grass looks green, the paint looks white and everything looks neat. But when you get closer you realize the foundation is crumbling, the paint is peeling and lawn is full of crab grass.
That was this book for me.
On the surface, this book feels like it should be a good story. The mix up at a fertility clinic over the fertilized egg involving two couples is a really great premise. Add in the fact that in the emotional fall out, the two marriages fray at the seams and disintegrate under the stress. And as a result the wife of one of the couples and the husband of the other get together.
So yeah. this is a perfect set up for some great soapy goodness.
And yet, the execution is a major fail for me. What emotional exploration there is, feels very surface and done for maximum dramatic effect. Even the parts about the fertility made me scratch my head. The heroine was so excited to find out she was pregnant. In places the writing makes it seem like the couple was surprised and relieved the procedure worked. But we were told almost on page one that she had been pregnant twice before. She just couldn't carry to term. The reactions of the heroine seem like those of a woman who couldn't get pregnant before and was celebrating a long wished for success. Not those of a woman who had been pregnant twice before and feels anxiety that she might have a third miscarriage. She just doesn't exhibit any anxiety or fretting about this. It is odd that that element wasn't explored more. There is lip service but basically it is hand-waved away.
And while I was looking forward to soapy goodness, this book took soap and cranked it up to mach-10. Let's see we get:
- Quickie divorces (I have no idea what state this book takes place in but whatever state it is, they can get a finalized divorce in the matter of a month or two)
- Cheating. Everybody except the hero/heroine in this book have cheated on their spouses. Fathers, friends, co-workers, shady women seducing husbands etc. And all of these people cheating in some way or other affects the hero/heroine's lives
- Fist-fights. There were at least 4 fist fights by my count. At least one of them was the heroine fighting someone at her workplace.
- Spousal abuse
- At least two incidences here the hero/heroine are reviled for dating inter-racially by both random strangers and just introduced co-workers.
- Torn from the headlines! Driving while black & racist cops.
- Crazy exes.
- Crazy mistresses
- Surprise PTSD. Wait, where did that come from?
- Surprise BDSM. Suddenly we get whips, blindfolds and hot wax at like 74% into the book. What?
- Inheritance fraud.
- Blackmail.
By the time I got to the I was pretty much done. And just wanted this to be over.
Great cover tho. And clean editing! So that's a plus.
I’m gonna start with my dislikes and will work up to the likes:
1. Not wanting to sound like I’m more Catholic than the Pope but the amount of cheating in this book: way too much. The protagonists got cheated on, clearly. And kind of every other relationship in this story had to deal with spouses who couldn't keep it in their pants. But what I hated most: all the black men (but one, namely the brother of the female lead) in this story have cheated on their wives. This trope is getting old, y’all.
2. There was no escaping the drama: the cheating, the mix-up, more cheating, dealing with overbearing ex-in laws, dealing with crazy ex-wife, more cheating fall out, some brouhaha around an inheritance, greedy people, something happened to the kid, people were beaten up, malicious ex-colleagues, someone had PTSD (which came out of nowhere and I’m still debating if this was purposeful to the story or not)…it went on and on and on. This book could have ended like 100 pages before it actually did. I know, I always ask for proper long reads, but the emphasis is on proper. The storyline was all over the place and at a point it was just dragging along.
3. I hated the female lead’s name: Kanielle. Apparently Danielle is too common a name to use in a romance book? I was constantly reading it like Kanye (West, who I despise). Didn’t help with warming me up to the female lead.
4. The story was original: the mix up was a perfect one as far as mixed ups go.
5. I was utterly happy with how the antagonists were dealt with. Much deserved pay back!
As a persnickety lover of high quality Interracial Romance novels, I love the progress that Ancelli has been making ever since she released her first literary effort: .
As previously stated, I did not like that book; but at some point, I do plan to read the revised version. So getting back to her latest release, "Perfectly Mixed," I can definitely say that I liked it, but it wasn't without some issues.
Before I jump into that, please allow me to say that when Ancelli is on point with developing delicious drama amongst her angsty characters, that it's an awesome thing to behold.
As a matter of fact, this Chica will make you want to read past your bedtime, so far in fact to the point where you will only get about 4 frickin' hours of sleep, before you absolutely must get your tired behind out of bed, to face the day.
Crafting inventive worlds that captivate readers, demonstrates that she's grown, a lot...
However in regards to this book, I believe that this book should have been edited a lot better, and that the beginning was a little too slow.
Also, there were some issues where the dialogue seemed a little off kilter in a few areas. Other than that, this book is great way to enjoy a lazy afternoon.
I have to start off by saying that I bypass this story several times and read other stories! This is the first time that I read this particular author. And I guarantee you I'll be reading her other works very soon! This is the love story of Brandon and Kanielle. And the full circle it took for each of them to find each other. Perfectly mixed is on the surface about conceiving a baby through in vitro fertilization. And all the trials and tribulations that are associated with that process. The story starts off with two couples that are experiencing difficulties becoming pregnant The natural way. These two couples meet briefly in a waiting room at the fertility clinic. Each couple is desperate to have a family however several weeks later only one couple is happy the other is devastated. And that is the beginning of the drama between these two couples. This novel has it all it has drama romance erotica comedy for sure heartbreak and redemption you know what it's just like life it was so real and down to earth. Ancelli you knocked it out of the park on this one. As I said in the beginning of this review I'm looking forward to reading more of your work in the very near future. Definitely a five-star read I wish I could give it six stars. This story and the characters will be with me for a while. :-))
Such a pleasant surprise! Lots of twists and lots of drama. I love the naturalness of the authors voice. I think I may have found another one to add to the favs list. She made an improbable storyline seem so realistic, by adding down to earth characters with practical dialogue.
Without giving away to much, Brandon and Kanielle are both going through invitro at the same clinic. After a mix up at the clinic everyone life is thrown up in the air. Family secrets, betrayals, and life lessons abound.
This was fun. Def out of my usual reads, but I enjoyed the ride. . .and wish I could ride Brandon. :-p
I think there were some cameos from characters from other books, but I'm not sure. They seemed important. It made me want to check that out or see if they have a book.
3.5 stars... Likeable characters and fairly original plot. I didn't care for all of the over the top drama and unnecessary violence. Seriously, these people made Monday Night RAW seem tame.
PERFECTLY MIXED is my first read from author Ancelli and I am so glad that I finally tried this one. The story is well written with realistic characters who all have believable flaws that many readers will recognize and even relate to. The main characters Kanielle and Brandon are each in marriages that are affected by issues of infertility. Kanielle is feeling the pressure of producing an offspring that will continue her husband's family line to satisfy his parent's and grandmother's wishes. For Brandon, it's more a matter of actually saving his marriage as his wife Maggie's need for children and her inability to have them continues to strain their connection as a couple.
Although I enjoyed the story and found it an easy read, each and every character has an issue that bothered me. Kanielle stays in a marriage that is not just stressful, but her husband is not only untrustworthy but has been abusive as well. Yet, Kanielle has not only stayed with this man, but has continuously tried to conceive a child that would be brought into a messy situation. I don't like that. The thing that brought Kanielle to her breaking point should have come long before it actually did. Robert, Kanielle's husband is just an overall awful person. He doesn't show love and respect for Kanielle and I couldn't believe that she would want to have a child with him in the first place.
Brandon doesn't come off as much of an alpha personality; he is much more of a wait to react kind of man. He's a good guy and proves it over and over again throughout the story so I'm not sure what it is that makes him seem less than an alpha but that is just the impression that I got from his actions. Brandon has some issues that aren't disclosed until later in the book and I think that if they had been explored more and earlier in the book it would have been a good addition to the overall plot.
Ancelli's plot does have a few nice twists that were surprising and made the story speed up towards the end. I will also point out that it was nice to have a black heroine who isn't biracial, not described as being fair skinned with long hair and light or green eyes. It's nice that a traditionally featured black woman was good enough to be the heroine of the story. I have no problem with the former because I have read many IR romances where the heroine has those characteristics and I enjoyed the story. However, it was very nice to have a heroine with brown eyes and skin who didn't have to have anything 'exotic' or different in her genetic background to make her beautiful or interesting. Just saying.
PERFECTLY MIXED is nicely paced with a completed story and a happily ever after that won't leave you disappointed. I will definitely be exploring more of Ancelli's writing.
After months of sharing snippets and sneak peeks and speculation as to whether the book would actually be released, the story is finally here. Now that I’ve finished reading and have had time to absorb and reflect on what I’ve read, my feelings about this story are “perfectly mixed.”
I loved this drama for the messy ass plot-two childless couples desperate for a child visit the same fertility clinic, and wouldn’t you know, they done mixed the damn vials up. So who’s really the mama, and who the daddy? Had this been the true basis of the story, I would’ve given it 5 stars.
Ancelli is a very good storyteller. Her attention to detail is impeccable, but my fundamental issue with this story is not the “excessive” cheating as I’ve seen some comment in their reviews or all the back and forth about who the parents of Baby X really are. My issue with this story is the demonizing portrayal of almost all the black men in this narrative. Ain’t none of em worth a damn-except Chris, Kanielle’s brother who eventually gets his shit together, thanks to Brandon, the white hero of the story. From Kanielle’s father, to her husband, to her father-in-law, there was no positivity reflected in these black men. Maybe I could say Kanielle’s mother’s boo and eventual husband was, but to my knowledge, his race or ethnicity was never disclosed.
Now that I’ve hopped off my soapbox, if you like messy dramas and evil exes with doses of romance and hot sex thrown in, then this is definitely the story for you. It will take you through some things emotionally for sure.
Wow were do I start? I had been waiting on this book for a while and I was not disappointed. This book had so many twists and turns that I did not see coming, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I LOVED BRANDON....can you say ALPHA MALE!!! I went through so many emotions while reading Brandon and Kanielle's story- but I expect nothing less from Ancelli, she knows how to weave tales that have you crying one second and wanting to punch a wall the next...and a few characters in this book had me close to doing the latter. I must say I was very happy with the length of this book, I've read so many books where I felt cheated out of the "whole" story.....I had, had, had to have ALL of Brandon and Kanielle's story....I definitely got their whole story in this book and I feel content that I got to experience it all. As always WELL DONE ANCELLI !!!!!!!
I was given an ARC for an honest review. What can I say about this author other than she writes about emotional issues that real couples face in their relationships. This book is about so many different emotions and central is the emotion of a love that is all healing. In this book we meet two different couples trying to get pregnant after many miscarriages and the last chance for each. We meet Robert and Kanielle and Maggie and Brandon. These couples are different in many ways but same in the quest for a child with ulterior motives thrown in. The reader goes through the ups and downs with an outcome that no one expected. I highly recommend this emotional read.
This is Kanielle and Brandon's story but its also Maggie and Robert's story too.
This story was about fertility issues, love, hate, betrayal, abuse, second chances all great elements that make up a great story.
I was taken with the issue of betrayal. It was not just the main couple's relationship that is touched by this issue. There are about 4 couples in total whose relationships suffered through betrayal. It was interesting to see the different responses to this situation and author did explore the different ways to respond this issue.
Maggie, Robert, Leslie and Robert's mum were all douches for me
I loved Brandon and Kanielle and the chemistry in their relationship. I enjoyed the way that Brandon loved Kanielle and how he was there for her at every turn!
Well Ancelli has done it again! Like all of her books before this is a stunner!! Her books are true to life. Everyone can and will relate to a situation or person or personal experience In her book. She is a wonderful writer. I recommend this book to anyone that wants a real reading experience. Congratulations Ancelli on a job well done!! You'll always have a fan in me!!
Anytime you want a dose of realism with your romance, Ancelli is the go to author. Brandon was a very genuine H. Kanielle had trusts issues but for a good reason. I most cherished the moments between precious little Coral, Kanielle, and Brandon. By the end of this read I was on "drama" overload! ;-)
I proudly give this book 5 stars and more if I could. Technically it had all the right elements for a wonderful story(One that I will always remember). The characters were well developed and complex. I love the hero and heroine, Bran and Kanielle!! I could say more , but read it for yourself like I did and then you will see just how good the book is too!!!
Great job Ancelli, you rock and so does your writing. In every book you write I can see your growth as an author. Girl you are going places. If you don't mind, I'm coming along for the ride. Every book you write touches me deeply and this book was no different! I've never met you, but I can feel that your heart and spirit are a part of your writing. That's why I am a fan for life. I'm proud of you and proud to be one of your biggest fans! BRAVO and keep them coming!!
I love this author and I love this book. Kanielle and Brandon meet in fertility clinic. Each is with their respective spouses. One receives good news, the other couple's news was devastating. Then a twist of fate throws them back together. One has a husband that is horrible. One has a spouse who is devastated because her dreams are being tossed upside down.
Through a hurricane of drama, two people find love and bring a beautiful life into the world. Kidnapping, mental and physical abuse and prejudice are themes in this novel.
The story is riveting and wonderful. Some old friends from Ms. Ancelli's other books make an appearance.
Thank you Ms. Ancelli..can't wait for your next book.
Drop Everything & Read This- I took a chance with this based on the ratings. It did not disappoint. I absolutely loved every moment of this journey. Sweet, hot, charismatic, sexy, and the right amount of angst without the heroine throwing it all away over a misunderstanding. I truly loved this story.
This book was everything. I swear Ancelli can do no wrong. She is a writing genius and this book is a testament to her skills. I absolutely loved Brandon & Kanielle . I recommend this story to anyone looking to read something extraordinary. Kudos to you Ancelli
What a fantastic read and well written! Two infertile couples meet a fertility clinic and fate has a way of making things happen. This is an emotional tale of life and how things happen for reason. This is a must read!!!!
This is my third book that I have read by this author and just like the last two it was very good. I loved Brandon and Kanielle relationship. It was a very unique storyline and I really liked it. I will be reading more.
Kanielle and Brandon...Perfectly Mixed...White Savior Feels
3 1/2 stars
This is the first book I’ve read from this author. The story did keep my interest. Two couples, one black and one white, cross paths at a fertility clinic and become forever connected. The premise, though not original, was told in a unique way.
However...BEWARE
Three things about this book to be mindful of are:
FIRST - Stereotypes are-a-plenty. There were the racist cops pulling over the young black man because he was driving nice car, the voter the top racist boss with the down low racist comments, the evil and manipulative mother-in-law, the strong Black woman whose raised her kids alone when her husband walked away, etc. Not much originality.
SECOND - The sex scenes were some of the worst I’ve read. The scenes themselves weren’t necessarily bad, but the descriptive words were awful. Example, “Every time his rod plunged into her cavern, her pussy muscles contracted around him...” Um, what? What in the actual world? Most of the sex scenes were laughable and took me out of any type of sensual feels I should've been having. Who calls a penis a rod? Instead of taking the time to make the sex scenes sexy, the author just found a bunch of unsexy words for a penis. Sex scenes are best without obnoxious (vulgar) words. Less is more.
THIRD - My biggest problem with this story was the TOTAL and complete WHITE SAVIOR vibe that was pervasive throughout the book. Brandon saves Kanielle from her abusive black husband. Brandon saves Chris (Kanielle’s young brother) from the racist white cops. Brandon gives Kanielle the children she couldn’t get otherwise.
Side Note: The book was overly preachy at times, mainly because the thoughts of the characters came more from the author than the characters. There was a lot of telling in this book.
I haven’t read very many interracial romances (bwwm), but I don’t think it’s necessary (and a major disservice) to make black men abusive or cheaters. Of course it's the prerogative of the author and how they want to tell their story, but Every black man in this book was a cheater or abusive or both; Robert was a wife abuser and cheater, his father Robert Sr. was a seriel cheater, Shawn cheated on Angela and then she had to be saved by Brandon, and Kanielle’s dad cheated on her mom then left her for the other woman.
Then, on the other hand, the white hero, of course never cheated and loved with his whole heart, and his deceased dad (also a white man) was a loving disciplinarian. The only other men in the book, Greg (the doctor) and Andy (Mrs. Jackson's boyfriend) were good guys, but their races were never identified or made clear.
I believe that subliminal messages do exist, especially when it comes to black men. I don’t know this author, but I would caution all readers of this book (and maybe her other books) to be mindful of what you're reading.
I gave this book 3 1/2 stars, even though I had issues with it, because the story definitely held my interest - even with the things that bothered and annoyed me.
This interracial romance wasn't about a billionaire who needed the black woman to help save his fortune through deception that led to true love.
The cheating in this book was too much. The hero, Brandon and heroine, Kanielle, were both cheated on by their spouses. Kanielles's husband, Robert, was a serial cheater. Brandon's wife, Maggie, cheated with a man who had four children. No cheating is excusable, however Maggie's made less sense, as Brandon tried to give her everything she wanted, including going through IVF. Even the secondary characters cheated. Cheating never makes sense but even less so in this book.
There was was too much drama including adultery, mix up at fertility clinic, the cheating, overbearing in laws, dealing with a crazy ex-wife, greedy people who will do anything to gain an inheritance, over the top violence, envious and racist co-workers and friends and a malicious mother-in-law, among other things. I wonder why PTSD was included about halfway through the book and didn't seem to add anything to the book. The book went on and on and on. This book could have ended long before it did. The storyline was all over the place.
I really disliked Kanielle's name which distracted me throughout the entire book. The sex wasn't sensual - everyone was doing it. The storyline wasn't original. I've read too many stories with mix ups occurring at Fertility Clinics. However, this mix up was deliberate and a result of Robert's cheating.
As a lover of good interracial romances, this is not one. It was my second read of this book and had I remembered the book, I certainly wouldn't have reread it.
So while I had mixed feelings about this book after reading some of the reviews, I decided to read and form my opinion. I can relate to how the heroine reacted to her pregnancy (you do know that anxiety leads to stress leads to miscarriage), and since she went down that road twice, she knew better, plus her mother exhibited great support and reeled her in when she tried to go down that road (doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is considered insanity).
Uncontested divorce which happens in this book can finalized within 20 to 30 days. Her ex was greedy, so he signed and did not contest the divorce. His ex wanted out, so he did not contest the divorce hence 20 to 30 days.
PTSD- most military and some nonmilitary will suffer from PTSD after traumatic experiences. He was traumatized as a child when his parents were killed and he is ex-military, hence PTSD.
I found that the story mirrors reality, which is usually messy. I really reading the book.
Perfectly Mixed had me all in my feelings...angry, sad..happy. Yes a mix. Kanielle & Brandon are just too much and I so loved these two characters. Ancelli does a great job at making her subjects come alive. They jump off the pages and into your heart and mind as they are so relatable with real world issues. The villains in this piece although crazy are realistic as people like them exist in the real world and do such things and a lot more. There's no shying away from issues like abuse, trauma, infidelity, racism, greed or envy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the growth of this couple overcoming all that and more fighting for a love for the ages. Gee..ain't love grand...👍
