This author is an experienced and well-credentialed physical therapist who specializes in the treatment of patients with acute or chronic neck pain. He's also an excellent writer and a down-to-earth guy. And he has both professional and personal experience with the modern lifestyle conditions that cause neck pain. After years of urging patients to avoid sitting for long periods at a computer, he admits that the pressure to finish this book meant that he himself sometimes did just that. Anyone who has ever sat down at a computer for a "quick check" of their email (or anything else) and looked up to realize that they've been sitting slumped over the Evil Machine for hours knows all the verses to this song.

This is an in-depth discussion of neck pain aimed at the sufferer who wants to take an active role in his own treatment. All medical practitioners agree that patients who are proactive, rather than reactive, have the best out-comes. It's your body and your life and you should be in charge. But that takes effort and goes against the modern mindset that tells us that 1) there is a quick fix for every problem and 2) that medical care is what happens in the doctor's office or in surgery. In truth, you are your own best physician, if you develop the confidence to become an active partner in the process and if you make the effort to educate yourself.

Neck pain can be a result of injury, ageing, bad posture, sedentary life-style, or a combination of these factors. Surgery is sometimes necessary, but not always and many people are disappointed with the results. Narcotics and other heavy-duty pain-killers have well-publicized dangers. Exercise and changes in life style are the safest and least expensive "treatments" and likely to be the most effective long-term.

I have been dealing with neck pain for decades and (being for many years without insurance) have had to find my own way. I was amused to learn that the heated neck-wrap that this author recommends is the one I bought many years ago and have used every day since them. The exercises he demonstrates are almost exactly like the daily stretching routine that I have perfected over a period of years and which keeps me virtually pain-free.

So do I regret spending three bucks for this book? Heck, no! It's chock full of information and suggestions and I learned a lot from it. The secret to staying in good health as you age is to keep learning and trying new things. Plus it's fascinating to me to read the science behind some of the things I have found to be effective without knowing why or how they worked.

If your approach to health care is to present yourself passively at your doctor's office, plan on spending a LOT of time there. Your health won't improve until YOU get involved in the process and make it happen. You're smarter than you think and even small changes can reap big benefits. This book could change your life for the better and the amazed expression on your doctor's face when you start asking intelligent questions is worth the effort!

Great advice for alleviating neck pain!

Early this year, I was experiencing debilitating neck pain. My shoulder and my elbow were hurting, and my fingers were tingling. It hurt so much I could hardly move or do simple, normal activities, such as fixing my own hair. When I would ride in a car and hit a bump, it felt like someone was trying to cut off my head with a blunt sword!

I went to see a chiropractor, who ordered an x-ray. It revealed that I had lost the normal curvature in my cervical column, and the nerves in my neck and arms were being pinched between the C5 vertebrae and other bones. The doctor gave me an adjustment, which helped relieve the pain temporarily, but I had to go back to have my neck readjusted.

The chiropractor suggested I sleep on my back with a tubular pillow under my neck. It helped somewhat, along with a traction device that stretched my neck and took the pressure off the nerves. However, the doctor said I would probably need regular adjustments for “pain management” thereafter. Not wanting to continue to spend $40 a week for mere pain management, I looked online and found this book.

Sean Sumner is a physical therapist who specializes in treating neck pain. He outlines a step-by-step process of simple exercises you can do at home to strengthen your neck and back muscles to restore proper posture and alignment of your spine and alleviate pain. The book has great illustrations and instructions to show you what to do. He also recommends the use of heat to relieve tension and relax sore muscles. And he shows you how to set up your work station to improve posture and reduce neck strain.

It took several weeks, but the change in my neck has been wonderful! I can resume normal activities, including fixing my hair, without pain. I can even take a ride in the country without feeling like I am under attack.

If you have been experiencing any kind of neck pain, I highly recommend this book. It only cost about $3 for the ebook, as opposed to $40 or more a week for chiropractic adjustments. Why settle for expensive doctors or medications to manage pain, when you can eliminate or dramatically reduce it with exercises and other simple environmental changes, instead? Do yourself a favor and get this book!

A pain in the Neck!

This is such a wonderful resource for dealing with neck pain and preventative measures to avoid pain. I loved all of the author's suggestions from apps, exercises, desks, sleep cycles, etc. . If you are at a computer for long periods of time, you will certainly get neck aches. I know i've gotten them. The suggestions were really good reminders of moving around after 35-45 minutes of sitting. I play classical guitar and am in constant "twisted" and one foot elevated. I know I will definitely use the exercises, the Stand up! App to relieve my postural pain and my strained neck pain. Thank you, Sean Sumner, for writing such a valuable book.

Excellent well written and effective advice

I love how this book isn't medical mumbo jumbo, it's just good clinical advice. Achieveable exercises are included( not too many) and stuff for acute pain and long term solutions to stop it for reoccurring.

Awesome easy to read helpful book

Finally a book that takes everything your PT or ortho has tried to tell you, but you conveniently forgot, into one easy to read manual. Includes references to pain meds, all the neck exercises you need, info on helpful devices, and strategies to fix your office space to lesson the stress on your neck pain. I have a history of multiple MVAs, and I have been through the gambit and expense of everything to relieve my suffering. Unfortunately multiple specialists will give you only bits and pieces and they leave you to put it all together yourself. No need to be frustrated now. Just buy this book and save yourself a lot of money and wasted time. This is all you need.
