This book initially bamboozled me and I wasn't sure of what was going on as it moves from present day to the past.
When in the past, it refers to the sisters not in name but as the older sister and the younger sister. This felt a little jarring for me and pulled me out of the story a little. But it helped build an insight into Harlow's mind and inner workings.
In the present day, main character Harlow and her sister Lauren's parents have just died. At the will reading Harlow is faced with stipulations that in order to inherit the wealth and house she loves, and almost seems like a crutch, she must divorce her husband.
From this point on there is a sense of unease and of mistrust. What do her parents know? Should she follow their instructions? Are they acting in her best interests? Does she risk losing the love of her life? These questions plagued me a I read.
Harlow was a fairly complex character who we learn had a traumatic experience as a child. That plays into the present and as a result she suffers with her mental health and has blackouts and panic attacks.
Through the mix of past and present we see her have episodes and it was hard to know what was real.
I guessed parts of the ending but I will say it is incredibly twisty.
This ones for you if you love a slow burn that builds into a twisty crescendo, books with an ethereal feel, and houses and atmosphere that are described so vividly they feel like characters.

I updated my review because I still keep thinking about this one!!
This one started off strong & I really enjoyed the first half! I liked the dual timelines and how we were slowly fed clues into the past traumas.
That being said, it drive me absolutely crazy at times how clueless the main character was.
There were multiple twists & I was able to most of figure them out before their reveals, but one did catch me by surprise.
Originally I gave this 3 stars because the main character drove me crazy. But, I can’t stop thinking about this one! It really is a great read & I do love a character is so well written that you have strong feelings towards them..
It’s been over a week since I read it and the fact that it still doesn’t want to leave me made me update my review to 4 ⭐️s. I just needed time to process everything.

My interest was instantly piqued after reading the blurb and seeing the cover for this one, I thought I knew what kind of story to expect and I was totally wrong. I was surprised at how much this actually messed with my head, in an enjoyable way and once I had finished, I needed to take a moment to digest everything I had just read.
I won’t lie, I did struggle with it at first, my mind felt blown at times trying to unpick everything but I soon felt myself being reeled in and I was pleased that the read did become quite dark, as I love the sort of books that can unsettle you and have you questioning the human mind. So, to say I didn’t think I’d see this through, the author soon made me for a 360!
The twists and the turns were brilliant and I have nothing but praise for that ending. I am so glad I stuck with this as the last few chapters really did confirm this is a worthwhile read. Definitely a book for those who like their head to be played with a little!

This is exactly the sort of premise that immediately pulls me in. The atmosphere is dark and intriguing, with a gothic edge that quietly creeps under your skin. I found myself completely wrapped up in the eerie setting and the unease that seemed to hang over every page.
The tension built so naturally throughout. Rather than being full-on and dramatic, the slower pace gives the atmosphere and emotion room to breathe, making each revelation that little bit more satisfying.
And that reveal - it genuinely stopped me in my tracks. Nikki Vogel has created a story that is as unsettling as it is compelling, with an atmosphere that lingers from the first page and culminates in everything being woven together perfectly.

Dark, twisty & a little confusing
This was an exciting read that I could not put down. Lots of twists & turns.
However, a few pieces still don’t fit together in my mind so it left me a little dissatisfied.

I found this book hard to follow. After reading it I’m still not sure who was actually alive and who was dead.

I really wanted to like this. The blurb sounded so intriguing, orphan Harlow is left $3 million and her childhood home, Hummingbird House, in her parent’s will after they tragically die. The stipulation? She must divorce her husband, Kyle.
There ensues Harlow’s internal dilemma of inheritance vs husband and her determination of wanting to keep both. The victim of a traumatic incident when she was 9 means that Harlow relies on Hummingbird House as her safe space and Kyle is, well, her husband. Did her parents know something about them that they didn’t tell her? Or was it their own stereotypical judgements that meant they simply didn’t like Kyle.
This had enough twists and intrigue to keep me going, but the overall plot and escalation just didn’t stand up for me. The writing at times also felt long winded with no real delivery. I also could not connect with Harlow, the FMC. I found her internal monologue frustrating and some of the themes presented weren’t deeply explored enough for what I like. I’m sure this would appeal to someone looking for a quick domestic thriller, but this one was just not for me I’m afraid.

The premise alone had me hooked before I'd even opened the first page. Harper and Lauren have just lost their parents in a sudden accident, and grief hasn't even had time to settle before the will reading turns their world upside down again. Lauren has been disinherited entirely. Everything, the $3 million, the freehold house, all of it, goes to Harper. But there's a catch (just one, as the title promises): she only gets it if she divorces her husband, Kyle.
That's such a deliciously uncomfortable question to sit with, isn't it? Would you give up your marriage for a fortune, if your own parents seemed to be all but begging you to from beyond the grave? And worse, would you start to wonder what they knew that you didn't?
As the story unfolds, Vogel does a lovely job of letting suspicion creep in slowly, like a kettle coming to boil on the stove. Kyle starts to seem like exactly the kind of man your parents would want you rid of, and the reader (like Harper) starts doing the maths: if she dies instead of divorcing, doesn't everything just pass to him anyway? It's a properly unsettling bit of domestic suspense, the sort you read curled up under a blanket, glancing occasionally at your own other half.
I'll be honest, this landed for me as a solidly average psychological thriller overall. The pacing dips in places and some of the beats felt familiar if you've read a few in this genre. But I have to give credit where it's due: the ending twist involving the sisters genuinely caught me off guard. I did not see it coming, and it's rare these days for a thriller to still manage that. It recoloured everything that came before it, in the best way.
If you're after a book to curl up with, something that feels like gossiping with a friend about a family you can't quite trust, this one is worth the evening. Not a new favourite, but a satisfying one, and that twist alone earns it a place on the shelf.

I loathed Kyle from the very start, with his manipulative gaslighting of Harlow. I wanted to shake her rose-tinted glasses right off her nose. I felt so bad for her parents who had lost their lives in a car crash. But as more was revealed about Harlow and her sister Lauren’s lives together, I began to feel my sympathy ebb away.
I didn’t trust Lauren, or in fact any of the people around Harlow. Her hallucinations and blackouts led to me feeling confused at times but I’m guessing that’s exactly what the author intended, so readers can feel that sense of reality slipping.
Personally, I would have taken the option to divorce Kyle and get the inheritance however I recognise that’s said with hindsight bias! I really enjoyed the ending and could hardly read fast enough to find out the truth.
I can’t say much more without going into spoiler territory so I’ll just suggest you take this book with you on holiday, to work, to bed, but don’t blame me if you can’t tear yourself away from it! It’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 from me 🙂

That condition alone set the stage for so much tension, and I couldn’t stop reading because I needed to know why her parents would demand something so extreme.
I really liked how the story played with memory and perception. Harlow isn’t always sure what’s real, her past trauma, her visions, and her unreliable memories made me question everything right alongside her. That sense of doubt gave the book a haunting quality, and the flashbacks added depth while slowly revealing the truth.
The pacing started off steady, but once the secrets began unraveling, the suspense tightened and I flew through the chapters.

So, the story started a little slow but it then picked up pace and I found myself flying through it towards the end trying to piece together how it all fit together. Harlow, has been shaped by tragedy and has some mental health issues and it has effected her memory. She looses time, she sees things and her memories could be faulty, She's kind of like her own unreliable narrator and you are along for the ride.
The story jumps from the present to the past several times, through Harlow's thoughts, dreams, memories, and visions. In the present, you get some things revealed about Harlow's relationship with her husband and her sister and other acquaintances. In the past, you find out what the past trauma was and her relationship with her parents and her sister. There were a few things I could see coming but there were also surprise twists that I didn't see coming. The story was a little hard to follow as you are kind of like in Harlow's head for her faulty memory, thoughts, her visions and her loss of time and the story does jump around a bit, but it all comes together in the end in a very satisfying manner. I actually work in a mental health field so I could identify with some of the aspects of faulty memory and being an unreliable story teller. I thought it was a very well put together story that kept me guessing to the end. It was twisty and a bonus it could be read in one sitting, and I would certainly be interested in reading more works by the author.

Another new author discovered and what a great first read it was.
I could just tell that I was going to enjoy this by the classic thriller front cover image and tags - I'm a sucker for a cover with blood on it!
So, it took me a little while to get fully into this one but once we'd been introduced to the characters and I'd got the basics of the plot, the pace picked up and I was chasing all the answers.
After her parents tragic accident, Harlow finds herself set to inherit the family home and wealth - but her parents had never trusted her husband, Kyle, and had set a stipulation for the inheritance - to divorce first.
This was more of a slow burn psychological thriller which made a nice change to my usual short and fast paced reads.
The atmosphere was nicely set from the beginning and the seeds of doubt sown well.
I immediately had reservations about Kyle, but at the same time, wasn't sure whether that much weight should be put on the judgement of Harlow's parents - especially before we really knew why.
I really enjoyed the dual timeline which allowed the storyline to unfold gradually, adding detail piece by piece and giving us chance to make our own assumptions and theories along the way.
I love a creepy atmosphere that keeps me on edge whilst reading and this book certainly managed to do this.
The ending coming as an added surprise.
An enjoyable read overall and I'm looking forward to seeing what this author does next.

I immediately had reservations about Kyle, but at the same time, wasn't sure whether that much weight should be put on the judgement of Harlow's parents - especially before we really knew why.
I really enjoyed the dual timeline which allowed the storyline to unfold gradually, adding detail piece by piece and giving us chance to make our own assumptions and theories along the way.
I love a creepy atmosphere that keeps me on edge whilst reading and this book certainly managed to do this.
The ending coming as an added surprise.
An enjoyable read overall and I'm looking forward to seeing what this author does next.

This was such an addictive psychological thriller. Harlow’s parents leave her a massive inheritance, but only if she divorces her husband Kyle. That condition alone set the stage for so much tension, and I couldn’t stop reading because I needed to know why her parents would demand something so extreme.
I really liked how the story played with memory and perception. Harlow isn’t always sure what’s real, her past trauma, her visions, and her unreliable memories made me question everything right alongside her. That sense of doubt gave the book a haunting quality, and the flashbacks added depth while slowly revealing the truth.
The pacing started off steady, but once the secrets began unraveling, the suspense tightened and I flew through the chapters.
I liked how the family dynamics were woven into the thriller. The relationships between Harlow, her siblings, and Kyle added emotional weight, making the mystery more than just a puzzle, it was about trust, betrayal, and survival.

This is my first book by the author.
It's very different and strange storyline and plot, but well put together.
It started off as a slow burner, and odd to decifer at first, but I soon found myself engrossed.
It does keep swapping from past to present.
There are strong characters, Harlow is a very strong complex character, but likable in ways.
Kyle her, husband , I disliked from the start and wouldn't have thought twice about divorcing him for the inheritance .
Her sister Lauren, I wouldn't have wanted a sister like her and definitely not to be trusted.
I loved and enjoyed trying to work out, along with the twisty story untill that final twisty .

Right, OK, so... what did I just read? This book was intense, and actually rather disturbing. Thankfully it was the right kind of disturbing for me and I loved it.
The premise of this book drew me
in immediately. What a dilemma, and why did Harlow's parents hate Kyle so much? I have to admit I didn't trust him either, but
I wasn't sure if that was because the story
was set up so that the reader automatically thought he was the bad guy. But was he? Was Harlow just insane? Was it Lauren causing the problems all along? I was so close to working this one out. But don't quite get there.
If you like your thrillers to be on the dark side, even more than usual, then this is thr book for you!

A brand new author to me, Just One Catch is a dark and twisty psychological thriller that reminded me that Joffe Books publishes nothing but the best books!
The death of Harlow's parents gives her an impossible dilemma. She inherits the family home and every penny of her parents' estate if she divorces her husband within 30 days. Will she do as her parents wish, or will she sacrifice everything for the man she loves?
A fabulous read that is told over a dual timeline with complex and human characters. Harlow definitely got under my skin and I was still thinking about her long after I finished the book.
I am looking forward to reading more books from Nikki Vogel in the future!

Still trying to process all that I read. Great book, interesting story, kept me guessing to the end. I’m not sure all the pieces got tied up in a bow because I’m still trying to piece them together. Mind a bit blown… lol

A good read
Just One Catch by Nikki Vogel.
This was a good read. It did take me a few chapters to get into this book. I liked the cover and blurb of this book. This is a new author for me. I wasn't sure how I felt about the characters. I liked the writing style and the story. This was dark and twisty.

This book took a few chapters before I accustomed myself with the writer’s style, but once I got into it I enjoyed this slow burn, psychological thriller that plays with perception and makes you question everything.
After her parents die in a road accident Harlow is left three million dollars and the family home, Hummingbird House, in their will, however there’s a catch. Harlow needs to divorce her husband Kyle to claim her inheritance. Will she do it ?
The central concept is compelling, tapping into that universal fear of not truly knowing the people closest to you, and the vibe is light but creepy. With dual timelines, family secrets and a mysterious past there’s a lot to like, however I felt that there was too much unnecessary background detail which slowed the pace down for me. The shifting timelines are handled well and also the chill-inducing ending was a surprise, which I loved.
This is an engaging enough read that kept me turning the pages, but the slower pace and predictability prevented it from being truly gripping. I’m sure this will appeal to lovers of suspense with a strong psychological edge, unfortunately I felt it could have been a lot grittier. 3.5 stars 🌟 rounded up.

I absolutely flew through this book because I had to know what was going to happen next. Every chapter seemed to introduce another twist, another question, or another reason to doubt everything I thought I knew. I came up with countless theories along the way,(some closer to the truth than others), but I never, ever saw that ending coming.
Experiencing the story through Harlow's eyes was incredibly effective. As she questioned everything around her including herself, I found myself doing exactly the same. That constant uncertainty created a delicious sense of tension that kept the pages turning, while the brisk pacing meant there wasn't a single moment where the story lagged.
This is one of those thrillers that completely messes with your head in the best possible way. It's clever, addictive, and brilliantly executed, with an ending that left me reeling long after I'd turned the final page.
If you love psychological thrillers that keep you second-guessing until the very end, Just One Catch deserves a place at the top of your TBR.
